#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Great to be here with #LearnLAP to talk about way to keep empowering student learning. Happy to learn alongside @Katiemc827 Happy Monday y'all!
A1 In education we teach so much to answer questions. Students need to be empowered to know how to analyze, reflect and question things around them. We need to help them embrace the empowered learner they are. Focus on building questioning skills, not just answers. #LearnLAP
A1: Students need to be critical consumers of information. As a future teacher, I like to think critically as well and think of how to change things in order to improve. Students are the future. They should be able to have a voice.#LearnLAP
A1- Ss have access to so many resources- both tech and human- but they need to know how to ask questions to utilize their resources effectively and efficiently #learnlap
Ronald Fisher 4th Grade Teacher, If questioning is one of the most effective strategies, why is it so hard to have them come up with the questions? Think we too much do... #Learnlap
That last part! Yes. Students have a voice, we need to help empower their voice!!! give them more leadership, ownership and power to their learning. #LearnLAP
A1 My Questioning Techniques - Inquiry Based Learning page https://t.co/h52WunllwZ#LearnLAP Students should definitely question but learn how to find the answers to their inquiries.
A2: I need to get better at this. I want students to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, and due to math being structured, I want them to have the time to go beyond the realms and be curious. #learnlap
A1: It teaches them to think deeper and critically. They don't accept a yes or no answer, they go beyond them. Plus - it's a skill they will use their whole life. #LearnLAP
Educators take over. If we always give them the “what to lear” vs “how to learn” then we remove the power of student questioning! Just my thought. #learnlap
.@royalstatsoc International Statistic of the Year: On average, each year more Americans are killed by lawnmowers than Jihadi terrorists. https://t.co/JkDaXod9tw
A1: Our ss need higher-order, divergent thinking- ability to dev. their own questioning skils (not only answers). It promotes deep thinking, the skills/ processes to analyze and evaluate concepts. It enhances engagement AND promotes critical thinking of Ss AND teacher. #learnLAP
A2 No limit. Questions should not suppressed. Find ways to work them in. If it's during a lesson/guided learning, have a system for them to write it down for later. If it's pertinent at that moment; raise your hand & ask. If learning was guided by Ss ?s... #magic#learnLAP
A2: All the time. I had a wonder wall, where students could post their questions. I also had inquiry stations set up where they would be able to manipulate materials and question. I encourage curiosity. #LearnLAP
A2: I need to get better at this. I want students to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, and due to math being structured, I want them to have the time to go beyond the realms and be curious. #learnlap
A2 weekly for sure. I like using 3-2-1 3 things learned, 2 questions, 1 opinion about a lesson, video, learning target etc. During projects/inquiries we always do a halfway checkpoint where ss present where they are at and class can ask questions.
#LearnLAP
A2 Everyday, there's a question lingering in the air, but I always seem to answer it before they can ask it The question is..."What are we going to do today? How are you, our teacher going to engage us? time to flip the tables... "how are you my students going to engage #Learnlap
A2 Students need to know they can ask questions in many ways- raising your hand is just one option - this is something I am working on utilizing and advertising #learnlap
A2. I do try to get them to ask questions, but I try to make them during natural breaks in text so not to disrupt comprehension of the main idea. #LearnLAP
A2Giving them time to wonder and make connections after a short time of teacher talk. Posting their wonders and curiosities in class, then allowing time for them to talk about it. This reflection helps their learning retention too. Has to be intentionally planned. #learnlap
A2: I would call this a "work in progress" w/ the tchrs I coach- ranges in large part of the learning driven by ss ?s & inquiry to still a # of "sage on the stage" #learnLAP
A3 Learning needs to be driven by curiosity, fun, adventure. To do so, we need to empower kids with questioning skills. Be attentive, listen to students, allow their voice to be heard, to drive the competencies, skills, content...no more one man show. #LearnLAP
A3 - PBL and Passion Time can be structured around student-driven questions. When students are given time to research their own questions, they're much more motivated to learn & get more out of the information than if everything was teacher-led. #LearnLAP
A3. By their questioning it shows the routes they are interested in & will be more vested in learning & hopefully to continue past expectations. #LearnLAP
"In each pause I hear the call." - Ralph Waldo Emerson,
When we pause we hear their voices, we hear their questions! #Learnlap
from "Thank You for Being Late." By Thomas Friedman.
A3: I taught young 5s and I used their interests and questions to guide activities. Instead of "themes," I would listen to them. For example, they were interested in space, so we explored space and created our own solar system. #LearnLAP
A3- I think many Ts are afraid that questions can derail the class into a unwanted tangent (and sometimes they can) but we need to embrace when a great question is asked and spend time giving a great question a great answer #learnlap
I am now reflecting at the stage of: and if our classrooms were driven by Passion Time rather than content in curriculum? If focused on developing competencies through some content...what a difference we would see. #LearnLAP
A3 When we listen to their questions, we now have to driving force, it isn't the core, it's their questions ... now give them a chance to find their own quest of learning using PBL, GeniusHour, PassionTime. #LearnLAP
A3 I think Ts need to work on Ss answering other Ss questions and that can help drive our work in creating Ss who want to ask questions but also students who want to answer questions #LearnLAP
A3 Looking at their Qs as a way of formative assessment for myself. Are their themes to their Qs that show an understanding beyond what was taught or misunderstanding. It also gives me insight into their ind knowledge construction and how they're connecting the pieces #learnlap
A3:In education, we tend to value a student’s ability to answer our ?s. More important= their confidence & willingness to do so.#learnLAP . resource: 8 Strategies To Help Ss Ask Great Questions https://t.co/RF7PA6QfEb by @terryheick#learnLAP
Just today we used @Wonderopolis to answer questions my students had after reading an article and they wanted to know more...BUT because they asked! #learnlap
A4 Practice practice practice! Question everything. I used to challenge my students: always question the relevancy of what we are learning; if I can't answer it, we will move on. Build on authentic learning. Mastering skills. Creating learners! #LearnLAP
A3: Teaching Ss to ask their own Questions is a technique that helps students learn how to produce their own questions, improve them & strategize on how to use them ⁰
https://t.co/3G8EwVGeuR#LearnLAP
A4: For my ELL students, I provide them with sentence stems. I feel like this could apply to all students. With an appropriate amount of scaffolding, these students can generate their own questions and push their thinking to a new level. #learnlap
A4: We have to model great questioning techniques. We also need to expose students to questions beyond level 1 of DOK. Encourage student to look beyond recall and move toward analysis and creativity. It takes practice, encouragement and consistency. #learnlap
A4 - I help my students ask PHAT (Pretty Hard And Tough) Questions (Credit: @JohnFritzky) while reading novels by teaching them Notice & Note Signposts, Bloom's Taxonomy, and Common Core-style questions. Then, we track how often we use each. #LearnLAP
A4:Confidence in yourself as tchrʻ- to fail forward a # of times in depth of ?, etc AND be a model. Bld that same confidence in Ss. Practice Stems (for tchrs & posted for ss) #learnLAP
A4. We also need to teach S by modeling better questions ourselves. No more "what's in my pocket?" questions, right @i_am_nahoko Ts need to practice question formulation too. #learnlap
For sure!! Sentence stems are a great way to begin. The more you encourage questioning and curiosity, the less you'll need the prompting. They will begin to do it all on their own. The language will be second nature. #learnlap

https://t.co/w6EV710xjv up control is also hard. We have to work at embracing the mess. Allow for failure and encourage our Ss to keep going. #learnlap
A5 You need to focus on building a growth mindset. Be mindful of vocabulary used. Let students be comfortable with a challenge and not having the right answer all the time. Celebrate the process, not the product. Build on learning and questioning. #LearnLAP
A5 - I'm sure there are less extreme ways to do it, but we're a grades-free, improvement-focused classroom where making mistakes & embracing feedback from everyone is the norm (& appreciated). It's now easier to take risks, ask questions, & look foolish. No judgment! #LearnLAP
A5: In my classroom, I teach a growth mindset. I encourage a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed. So we are constantly revisiting language and learning as we go. #LearnLAP
A5: To embrace the struggle you need to embrace failure. Students need to understand that failure leads to learning which leads to growth. We need to move beyond "afraid to get it wrong" to "i will do whatever it takes to get it right." #learnlap
A5: For the older Ss that were not brought up with the growth mindset I think it is still harder for them - the younger students are at a better advantage for the "ok to fail mentality" #LearnLAP
A5: For my Honors contract this semester, I did it on growth mindset and had an interview with a member of @joboaler team. I like to teach students to persevere and not be afraid to ask questions because questions drive further discussion. #LearnLAP
Yes...learn as we go! Even when I make mistakes, I apologize to them on the spot and reassure them that we’re all in it together!! #growthmindset#learnlap
Not extreme. We need to allow for students to show their learning constantly. If they can demonstrate their learning a month later, why not adapt their mark. Be mindful of each learner's journey. Don't expect one measurement to represent justly. #LearnLAP
A5: Our students who sometimes get stuck and struggle to unlock their thoughts created this board by sharing their fixed mindsets and their growth mindset thoughts. We are, after all, a hybrid of both says Carol Dweck! #growthmindset#learnlap
A6 The book Diving into Inquiry...any book by @burgessdave publishing has nourished me and pushed me to think beyond structure and limits. You need to take risks, collaborate, discuss, learn and model for Ss and Ts. #LearnLAP
A5: Mistakes are the most important thing that happens we all know they tell us where to focus that deliberate practice. Try praising for creativity in figuring out a problem, playing w/ideas, persevering in the face of challenge, display work that shows creativity #learnLAP
A6 First and foremost questioning and Inquiry have been apart of the learning process. Resources, I've learned from my PLN, #LearnLAP, from books that I have read, from the latest research, but best resource: the Students themselves.
A6 - This is the book that got Inquiry started for me (the original version):
Comprehension and Collaboration, Revised Edition: Inquiry Circles for Curiosity, Engagement, and Understanding
@Stephharvey49 & @smokeylit: https://t.co/fh8RLMy3lS#LearnLAP
A5 We must create an environment where it's ok to make mistakes, we learn through error, I make sure I talk with every S every day so they feel valued #LearnLAP
A6: I have used the collaborative component of @nearpod to have students generate ideas, but I really liked what one teacher said about creating a wonder wall where students can list their questions. I might try that next semester as a student teacher. #learnlap
Not not all vet teachers are as calcified and burned outbas pop culture would have you believe. Find the cadre in your school and develop relationships. Even experienced teachers want to innovate and improve. #learnlap
A6: The Depth of Knowledge wheel is a great tool for teachers and students to use when analyzing questioning techniques. You can also use Empower by @ajjuliani and #boldschool to look at blended learning #learnlap
A5 This is very hard for our high performing students... have to give them a safe place to share ideas and empower them to fail - support those ideas and let them grow and become better! #edtech like #flipgrid can help facilitate! #learnlap
A6 Using Google Docs comments for peer feedback has been very powerful to help Ss feel comfortable questioning. #flipgrid has been a great addon this year. Our media specialists are rocking inquiry in their #makerspaces! #learnlap
A7 A genius hour/passion project/independant learning assignement. They had to make a difference in the community or perform Random act of kindness based on assessment of situation. They created their learning/made a difference/had fun/were empowered. AMAZING! #LearnLAP

A7: During a STEM unit that my CT @MACKENZ1E_M implemented where students planted corn to learn decimals, the students did ask questions when we had a community member come in to speak to us.#learnlap

A7. I think the new trimester beginning now is the best because we are moving into non-fiction this leads to questions of wanting to know more to be an expert on a subject to share at their 'genius hour' #LearnLAP
A7 My first GeniusHour of the year, always interesting how they fumble over the idea that they can learn whatever they want... empowering to see them go find an answer to a question that they've always had... #LearnLAP
A7: Anything that involves students doing research should begin with them developing their own set of questions, ideally in a group so everyone feeds off each other's energy, curiosity and imagination. #LearnLAP
A8: We have our Founderʻs Day & last day before break.... but I am already looking up the resources AND taking these answers for our first teacher training of the year! #LearnLAP
A8. I'm going to play around more with @Wonderopolis and go back through our chat to pull out all of the great ideas. I'll share it out when I'm done. Perhaps in a #sketchnote. :) #learnlap
A8 Keep empowering learners. In my virtual collaboration tomorrow, keep pushing kids to ask questions, to empower their own learning. It is all about student voice/choice. Make it all about them! #LearnLAP
Thanks SO much to @Katiemc827 for moderating #LearnLAP this evening! Student Questioning is a topic close to my heart! I learned a lot from everyone tonight!
No #LearnLAP next week (12/25) but join us on 1/1/18 as @teresagross625 moderates!
For now, please check out #tlap!
