#fcpslearn is a weekly chat about teaching and learning. Our focus is on creativity, innovation and inspiration. We discuss a range of educational topics that range from technology integration to the Olympics.
A1: I would feel extremely self-conscious, anxious and alone. I would love to have a teacher work one on one with me to not only acclimate me to the language, but to the environment as well. #fcpslearn
A1: Feelings would be isolation, that I don't belong, and that I'm not smart. Supports would be help with translation, an aid or support teacher, and one-on-one time.
#fcpslearn
A1 That is exactly what happened to me when I was 9 years old. It made me feel irrelevant and at times stupid. I knew the answers to the T’s questions but not in English. #FCPSlearn

A1: I feel out of place, zoned out, and like I need subtitles for school. I would love for someone in the school to make an attempt to help teach me some linguistic basics before they throw me into the deep end of content. #fcpslearn
A1 I think it would give you a monster headache, listening to people talking all day when you don’t understand ☹️ I would need lots of visuals #fcpslearn
A1 - Nervous, sad, scared, worried.
I’d want the teacher to be patient and understanding to my needs. There would have to be support for my learning, but not so much that people are doing the work for me. #fcpslearn
A2: My student that speaks Vietnamese carries an iPad with a translation app. I also sometimes use pictures to communicate with this student. #fcpslearn
A2 The best tool I have found is @mstranslator. It allows me to speak with Ss in multiple languages at the same time. Ss of different languages can communicate with each other. #FCPSlearn
A1: Overwhelmed & self-conscious. I know the curriculum is important, but I would hope someone understood that learning the curriculum is not the #1 priority. #FCPSlearn
A1: I would be looking for a smile, a friendly buddy, I would hope the school could provide me at least some resources in my native language. #fcpslearn
A2: Our middle school shares one ESL teacher with some of our other schools. To help me out, she provided me with differentiated books, so if we are learning about something in history, I can refer them to this book full of pictures and short sentences. #fcpslearn
A2: My 8 Years of middle/high school/college Spanish instruction ;) I’m not fluent, but I can hold enough of a conversation to communicate effectively. Smiles also go a long way! #FCPSlearn
A3: This for me would come down to relationships. Ts must take time and put in effort to build relationships with all Ss. Knowing them will give you the info needed to help them and/or seek additional resources.
#fcpslearn
A2 I do ask S’s who speak the new comers language to help but I like to use lots of visuals and the Google translate tool. Seesaw also has a translation tool too. #fcpslearn

A2 - I try videos and graphics that will at least summarize the key points of a lesson. Also provide cue cards which can be helpful in guiding the student in the right direction. #fcpslearn
A3 As the ELL specialist I educate colleagues on the differences between social and academic language. I make them aware of tools such as @newsela and @MicrosoftEDU supports such as Immersive Reader and @msonenote. #FCPSlearn
A3: I think teachers can have a hard time knowing what amount of understanding ESL students really do/don't have. Student's want to seem like they are getting it when they really are not. #fcpslearn
A3: One thing is for tests instead of giving them written choices, provide them with picture options. I know that I also like to provide a lot of pictures when I go over historical events to give everyone a sense of the time. I am sure this helps ELL Ss too! #fcpslearn
And increasing social language leads to the academic language- think toddlers- they have to learn to communicate basic needs before they can have a conversation about the books you read to them! #fcpslearn

A4: Focus on those skills BEFORE trying to teach content - OR work language skills and reading into the instruction of basic "school survival" skills. #fcpslearn
A4: Be fair and consistent. Ensure students have translated classroom and school rules if needed. Model everything possible and check for understanding often.
#fcpslearn
A3 - Guided notes and prompts that simplify difficult content. Chunk the learning into pieces. Provide extra time when the student is in need of extra help. #fcpslearn

A4: I'll never forget the first time I was told that coming to a new country can make some students realize they are now illiterate in two languages, their native language and now English. I was completely taken off guard. #fcpslearn
A4: focus on social/emotional learning as part of the day. Modeling behaviors and then focusing on the academics. Standards can wait- social understanding leads to academic success. #fcpslearn
For me... with a new student from another country, it helps that I use a Workshop Model so I can spend some 1:1 time with him/her knowing strengths, etc. #fcpslearn
A5: My lesson tomorrow includes videos about organ systems & subsequent summary. To help my language learners, I could provide a translated transcript of the video. #fcpslearn
A5: I would utilize my relationships with students to ensure all plans would work. I would differentiate where needed and build in conference time both to help Ss and serve as reflection for my planning.

Thanks for the chat tonight @MHSLewisHistory! Hope to see many of the #fcpslearn faithful on Thursday night at 9pm ET for #waledchat when we talk about building relationships!
We use @DiscoveryEd alot in the middle school. One nice feature - every video includes a transcript that can be copied and pasted so a translation can be made. This could be helpful. #fcpslearn
A5: Ensure that the lesson is relevant, meaningful, & appropriate. If they can’t apply the skill to their real lives (especially in the form of communication), you might as well not waste their time (or yours). #FCPSlearn
A5 I would make the activities visual, minimize language demands, provide differentiation at different levels, and have tools for translation available. #FCPSlearn
