What a great ! How have you helped Ts learn more about ?
Success for the week: being well received by staff when suggesting research before judging new idea
Let's get started...
Q1: What areas of coaching effectiveness have you measured or do you want to measure?
This wk's was seeing a T successfully implement new assess strategy in math just a day after our coaching session!
Hi everyone! I'm a grad student studying educational technology. It's my first time here and I'm excited to learn tonight

Yay Duane! was my 1st Twitter chat...and as new coach last yr, finding my tribe was life saver!!
Yay Duane! was my 1st Twitter chat...and as new coach last yr, finding my tribe was life saver!!
Patience and persistence. I demo the routine as often as possible. Slowly the good news spreads.
A1: sustainability, reflectiveness, evidence of change in student learning, competency in pedagogy
A1 It is important to measure how much of the technology of coaching has been transferred to the ckient.… https://t.co/qUWKfCEZQ4
Let's get started...
Q1: What areas of coaching effectiveness have you measured or do you want to measure?
Go to link. You'll be able to search the transcripts for the chat.
A1 I've measured time spent on different areas of coaching. I'd like to measure the effect of coaching on student achievement.
So rewarding to see quick results like that! Congrats! What was the strategy?
A1 Ultimate goal is s improvement. How do I measure my impact on student improvement?
A1: I want to use student data to inform instructional practices
A1: We have used teacher surveys, but I also try to send teachers I work with an email with just a couple of open-ended questions
So many areas to measure in coaching. The key is knowing your purpose.
can you tell more about time spent on areas of coaching?
A1: Measuring impact of coaching on teacher reflectiveness and implementation of new strategies
A1: Want to measure sustainability and impact on student learning
and how to assess the sustainability of change, which ultimately impacts student learning long-term
Noah in Denver tweeting for Stackup. First time getting to join this chat
Q2 How do you share the data collected? Who do you share it with?
Coached thru thinking abt conceptual vs procedural gaps in math; she created short assess for 1st time 2look at both
A1: Also, student data from formative assessments through unit. I would like to get better at that.
How are you assessing that?
I agree with this. How do you measure reflective practice?
Arriving late. Teri from Texas, middle school math instructional coach
The percentage of time I spent in meetings, preparing, paperwork, coaching conversations, observations, etc.
Any favorites among those tools?
Do you have any strategies for keeping track of this time?
What does that look like for you?
It took time, but I didn't do it for every week. Just a sample 2 week stretch in the beginning, middle, & end of year
A2: data's collected throughout coaching cycles & surveys in Google forms. Data from coaching cycles shared w/T and other for me
I haven't used them, but plan to share some with coaches I work with.
A1: Use Google Form to log observations, grade levels, contents, schools. Then it'll run analytics for me.
I keep track of all my time w/ separate google calendars.
A2. My principal is my No.1 data person. We have amazing conversations about what is being looked and WHY.
Developing T surveys based on the work of and in Teach Reflect Learn
A separate Google Calendar is a good idea.
Great metrics! I worked for director whose 1st act was calendar had to show 80% time spent in schools
Anyone using New Teacher Center for data recording and coaching convos?
ok, gotcha!! I track time spent too but love the division of different pieces of coaching process :)
- Can't go wrong with Pete and Alisa! :)
Is it based on the shift that occurs after the reflection?
A1: Also use another Google Form to chart look-fors and if I'm seeing them or not. Hopefully over time, you would see increase.
Would love to hear more. What does their tool look like. Do you have a link?
I use google calendar with codes connected to spreadsheet that creates data of time-love it!
A2: The data for this can be sooo delicate as could easily be used in ways that disrupt trust with Ts we coach
right on time for me since this is my goal for my performance this year!
How do you connect codes. I know coaches that color code calendar.
Q3 What tools do you use to gather/organize effectiveness data?
A1: GoogleCalendar is the hub for all my documentation Attach notes, link email and track meetings Consistent naming is essential.
A3: Google forms for staff survey data.
A2: I share data with the teacher to inform instructional decisions we can make to help students learning
Someone shared this on here, and I appropriated it. Hope that's ok. Keep track of my time on Calendar
A3. Log, journal, calendar is color coded based on specific task, google forms.
I learned of a school that sends out survey every 30, 60, 90 and 120 days to monitor over time! via
A2: I try to review the data at least once a week for my own reflection. I share data with coordinator and evaluator.
A3: Feel like I say this a lot, but Google provides me with lots of resources for data collection/safe keeping.
Do the teachers get surveyed out?
A3: Google form for observation of class room practice inventory lists
I use hashtags in Calendar. etc. You can search then.
A3:Follow up w/Ts via google forms, keep track of mtgs & PD in Google sheets & calendar, to-dos in Google keep 😆
A3: We do use Google Forms a lot to collect some data. However, this doesn't get any deeper than what Ts self-report.
Survey is short. Search Twitter feed. She shared to on Sunday. Great data!
A3 part II. Give EOY survey. Last year compared my logged tasks to feedback from Ts. Working on addressing gaps
LOVE learning new things. Going to try that!
PDs I use a formal feedback form... other I ask informally & want to do more formally
Q4 What are barriers to measuring the impact/effectiveness of an instructional coach?
Love me some color coding!!
oh, so using this!!! I may get creative 😊
A4: Capacity. I feel that at any given time I could have 5+ projects going on.
A3 Maybe the A to the wrong Q...I'm behind. suggests short Qs after each meeting/PD. What worked? Didn't work?
A4 Massive changes in curriculum and staff. Any changes + or - could be a result of SO many factors. How do I know if it was me?
Just starting to use GForms for classroom observations this yr, with autocrat My first official obsv/form is tmw!
You observed some great skills! How would you apply yourself?
A4: Surveys are tricky. Tough to create good ones, tough for Ts we serve to find time to complete them
A4: Feel like it can be subjective depending on culture of building and/or mindset of staff. It's about making change measurable.
Agree. Well built surveys time time.
A1 - You might like to look at https://t.co/VYeuJeA3Jk to collect and manage a range of coaching and performance related data
A1 - You might like to look at https://t.co/gdDKprUi9y to collect and manage a range of coaching and performance related data
A4 Barriers = It's difficult to measure quantitatively changes in thinking. That's the goal of coaching.
A3: Google Forms are my go-to. I would like a better way to organize my observation info.
yes! The ebb and flow of a school year and/or culture can impact effectiveness
Saw this response below...currently I ask mostly for Ts to self-report...need more info to assess impact on S lrning
Q4: While data recording is important, how many little moments and convs. are actually what has molded you in who you are
A4: I think the biggest barrier is time. Changes to practice take time, and to see big moves of the needle take time.
A4 Coaching is to raise student learning/achievement. How do you monitor that? Often difficult since there are many factors.
A4: Ts get a lot of surveys.
A3: in the past, I have used https://t.co/uXHHUcH4YC as a powerful tool for collecting data during a "lesson study" lesson.
Ah ha! In the middle of reading this right now! Look fwd to reaching this part of book!
you are going to love it! It's so great to have all the data in one place!
A4. IC not directly linked to outcome. the outcomes are based on another person. This has been a convo btwn Principal & me
Agree. Schools need to be mindful of number of surveys, purpose. What will they do w/data?
Change is a process, not an event
A4: Measuring IC impact gets tricky when most of the data is qualitative rather than quantitative--people tend to want more
She let me teach everyday. I experimented with different engagement, instructional, and assessment strategies
and patience in our leaders to allow that time for change to take root! https://t.co/KqgqADmWg3
A4: I think the biggest barrier is time. Changes to practice take time, and to see big moves of the needle take time.
measurable goals are so important! I think sometimes too how might we measure our questioning which = thinking
What type of strategies did you use?
The Art of Coaching Teams - It's worth the effort.
Q5: What are ways of assessing an instructional coach’s trust/relationships with teachers (an essential for coaching)?
think we have to be okay to say it isn't "me" but a product of the work we do, you are so right it is tough.
I think this is a great building conversation to build some strategy around it.
in our society of instant gratification, you are right...change takes time, hence why we celebrate the small wins :)
So true! With teachers and with students. Short term data often doesn't show long-term mindset/growth changes
A2 - the data should be owned by the client and only shared an the client's approval. Privacy is key for trust
A5 We can measure trust/relationships with Ts by determining how many Ts request services and how many are repeats.
So true. So many factors come together when achievement is increased. Hard to single out one.
Yes, remembering to celebrate small wins is important...yet hard to do at times!
A4: You measure what can be measured, but so much of coaching is relationship building. Difficult to quantify.
A4: a barrier 4 me, how to collect classroom management skill data. And when do I coach if I'm always data collecting?
A5: Would it make sense to plot out to see which staff are reaching out for assistance and frequency?
A5: I can tell based on how many T request my time vs. me reaching out to them https://t.co/8x0aVjYo9F
Q5: What are ways of assessing an instructional coach’s trust/relationships with teachers (an essential for coaching)?
A5: So true!! And great question! I usually think of sold-out PD & Ts willingness to reach out to me as good sign
I work w/Ts to develop their own data collection tool, we have a CC, respond to the data, plan, act, check...repeat!
A5: I've asked anonymously through surveys if Ts feel I'm trustworthy and values confidentiality, but enrollment says a lot too
Good question! Thoughts, anyone? https://t.co/Gftgw0tyaV
A5: Would it make sense to plot out to see which staff are reaching out for assistance and frequency?
I agree. Understanding that we are learning and improving with our students is just as essential
agreed!! Especially when we want to see change now! :)
Part 1 shares an approach where a teacher writes down the name of each person in his/her class on Friday.
A5: I think we can increase our trust with teachers when we check our judgement, and guide them to become reflective practitioners
I think, yes. It's a great way to see who sees value in the coaching.
I think body language between coach/tcher tells a lot about depth of a trusting relationship. Not scientific, I know.
Part 2 - If a students name is left off (forgotten) or at the end, he/she focuses on that student the next week.
depends. Tools develop as needed and look different for each.
Part 3 - The same could be done with teachers or teams of teachers (as a coach)
A5: I think we increase trust with teachers by asking them questions, not by having all the answers.
A5: When teachers try your suggestions without the directive coming from admins you know you've earned teachers' trust.
Q6: How do you decide how to schedule your time as a coach in order to be effective?
Thanks! I will check it out!
And if ignored, what is next move? https://t.co/ZUZ5NQR9LW
A5: Right or wrong...I assess the relationships by quality/quantity of our hallway convos. Am I ignored or included… https://t.co/B0aaoIHHHy
Q5: What are ways of assessing an instructional coach’s trust/relationships with teachers (an essential for coaching)?
A5: And if they bring you a cake on your birthday. Lol.
Interesting idea. The person you think of last or can't think of might need more attention. How might that apply Cs?
And we increase the trust relationship by eliminating self talk and listening deeply and intently.

A4 Coaching is to raise student learning/achievement. How do you monitor that? Often difficult since there are many factors.
Do people get quiet when you walk into the lounge? We run the risk of unintentionally intimidating Ts if not careful.
Q5 Informal conversations/observations, self-reflection opportunities
Exactly. If you have forgotten the name to list, coach could work to make contact in small ways the next week.
A6: Always have initial planning meetings, then assist in classroom at first, and follow through meetings.
A5: I collected a group of honest teachers. I showed them my job description and asked for feedback.
This is essentially what I do! I don't plot it, though. I just look at my Google Calendar.
I hope to get to this place this year! https://t.co/X0enAoYieb
A5: When teachers try your suggestions without the directive coming from admins you know you've earned teachers' trust.
That's great! I think I often look for same!
I will try this and see what happens. Thanks for the idea!
A6: same way I used a tiered system to differentiate for students in the classroom https://t.co/EfxZJHFLPx
Q6: How do you decide how to schedule your time as a coach in order to be effective?
I've been trying to make an effort to eat with different grade level teams to be visible.
So important! Ts won't trust me if they feel judged!
coaching conversations need to be confidential, safe spaces for the coachee.
A6 I frequently think of the urgency v importance matrix. Student needs are 1st, Teacher needs 2nd. All else is last.
A6: (easier said than done) but don't over commit yourself; make sure teacher commitments come first; leave some "wiggle" room
A4 Data should sacffold a growth mindset - look at https://t.co/gdDKprUi9y for an example of an improvement for effort graph
A4 Data should sacffold a growth mindset - look at https://t.co/RlKbDPTibt for an example of an improvement for effort graph
Patience and smile. In time I will earn their trust. Focus on the other Ts while waiting.
I use a similar strategy... spend time where S needs are highest first
agreed! Teacher commitments come first!
A6. Struggle is real. I have a hard time but i try to plan and prioritize; weekly planning and also convos w/principal help
Just smile, say hello, and try again tomorrow! Be present and visible. Think Nemo-JustKeepSwimming
A6: My district has adopted a coaching framework with goals for %age of time spent in diff. coaching roles--self-reported wkly
Q7: What type of goal setting (short & long term) do you use with teachers you work with?
Of course. That is the Iowa way! https://t.co/LUj2KausNq
Just smile, say hello, and try again tomorrow! Be present and visible. Think Nemo-JustKeepSwimming
A6: During your CC are you limited to a given number to teachers to work with?
A6: This is a continuous struggle! I use youcanbook.me so that Ts can schedule at their convenience.
Sheesh...fortunately NO! Our first year of coaching was odd, but now in 4th year it is all good.
Where are these tweets coming from and how can get involved? https://t.co/Q2plPTvSOK
A6: same way I used a tiered system to differentiate for students in the classroom https://t.co/EfxZJHFLPx
Q6: How do you decide how to schedule your time as a coach in order to be effective?
I show teachers how to use the Find a Time in Google Calendar. Love it when they schedule things using that!!
The basic level yes! What I love is it integrates with Google calendar.
OK, I need to learn how to use that!
For sure! That first year is all about relationship building. Sounds like you have healthy relationships going. 😊
A7: I think looking at an inventory of skills based on observation, and creating short term goals in specific domains is key.
I'm not familiar with that matrix. It can be hard, but we must find and test ways to help our students succeed
The basic level is free. They have you pay if you want to integrate it with more than one calendar etc.
Yes!! I love appointment slots!!
A7: Thinking of coaching in terms of ongoing relationship rather than cyclical. Short term leads to the long-term based on needs.
A6: You've got to prioritize teachers and affecting student instruction. Let that be your focus.
Q8: What goals are you setting for this school year? How can you measure your progress?
A7. within PLCs. knowing who you work with & their goals is important.
It's really easy to use for staff and you can customize questions.
This may be my favorite quote of the evening! https://t.co/TnW6OMyD88
A6: You've got to prioritize teachers and affecting student instruction. Let that be your focus.
Q8: To continue to foster a culture of learning.
A8: I'm working on small goals and strategies with teachers this year. Things we can change/add over the course of 2 sessions.
You'll get there, Nancy. Give yourself permission to grow. Proud of you!
A6: Have to prioritize work to meet T's S achievement goal. Our work should never be focused solely on the T
Oooh, I guess not! Would love to see your tips :)
Helping coaches set goals and work towards them is why I love coaching coaches virtually! Let me know if want to know more.
how does data impact how you coach?
it's Thursday in Australia. :)
A8: To create a coaching collaborate 6-12 for PD for instructional coaches. To implement coaching cycles.
A8: are working to complete stage 1 of our strategic plan. A lot of coordination and delegation is happening
A8: IC goal of enrolling more Ts in cycles focused on student-centered goals
Q9: Do you have any other questions for each other in the area of measuring effectiveness?
Well, I wasn't awesome at keeping up tonight, but I learned so much from you. Consider me inspired! Goodnight, !
Have to run -- thx 4helpful chat! If anyone's at next mo, I'm doing a session for TOSAs/coaches/a… https://t.co/oF1N7LKpp8
Good night. Yes, tons of ideas shared tonight!
Planning in advance and knowing teachers' needs are important. We sometimes forget to reflect, but we learn from it
I wasn't either....too many distractions for me tonight!
Thanks for some great ideas folks!
What are future topics you would like to chat about with
Thanks for a good chat. Got lots to think about.
Glad I caught the end of it! Good night and thank you. Always enjoying sharing ideas and connecting with you all.
A9: How are you evaluated as IC in your setting? What does it entail? Did you have any input in creating the eval process?
A8. Want to look at impact of new systems on practice and progress. https://t.co/BYZwFcr6a7
Q8: What goals are you setting for this school year? How can you measure your progress?
A8: Started new position this year, building relationships is #1 priority.
Thx to mods for great chat! Hope to join this awesome tribe again soon!
