Marci Ann Arbor French 6-8
I'm sure there is a post I haven't read...
A1: I take the grammatical structures, but choose my own topics/themes. Ss request wkshts, so it's helpful to have the textbook.
Q1 Q1 Q1What elements of your current textbook/units could easily be adapted to reflect interests/culture? https://t.co/Pkq4LTWM4l
Hey, ! Paul in Memphis here! I teach Spanish 3, 4, AP.
A1 There's a wealth of cultural materials to add with my teens, especially all the senior S I have this year. College on the brain
A1 The vocab (clothing, free-time activities, etc.) can often be modified or represented visually w images from the target culture.
A1 great 'unique' to my TL topics - we're just wrapping a 3 day (station day) activity around Sumo! Infographics in TL to come
Q1 Q1What elements of your current textbook/units could easily be adapted to reflect interests/culture? https://t.co/yJ9lVWfjm9
A1 In LNM the main stories are adapted selections of Latin lit with myth/history bent - I adapt these further to CI it up
this was my last admin's biggest problem with my teaching methods I think - what about continuity
A1- I love adapting units on family and school life- there are no shortages of to help Ss explore cultural connections
A1 my curriculum is structured by the book's grammar/vocab, but i use authres for cultural contexts that students find relevant
A1 I don't mind the thematic vocab but Ss brainstorm first what they want to talk about and THEN glance at textbook
Esp as I am taking a sabbatical come Feb (if my $$ improves I'm coming to Chicago!) so necessary to have!
A1: I find txtbk themes to be contrived, so I combine chapters or take the "cultural reading" and simply focus on that.
A1 Knowing we were doing descriptions, family, & actions, I added La Llorona (C) and incorp our class social media (c) this wk.
A1 the big 3 disconnects: daily routine, household chores, and weather
A1 My answer to this question is, "everything!" I adapt a lot of what I teach to what my Ss are interested in.
GREAT idea - and whoa - student choice! https://t.co/E3MZBAie0S
A1 I don't mind the thematic vocab but Ss brainstorm first what they want to talk about and THEN glance at textbook
yes! I've experienced this 2 & now a lot of my Ss switch at semester so I have to stay close to other Ts
A1: well I do not use a textbook at all, so my units are centered on culture & student interest
<3 https://t.co/iY2rFLTZOX
A1: well I do not use a textbook at all, so my units are centered on culture & student interest
A1 For student interests this year, I've started each chapter with a story with characters created by Ss, helps them learn vocab
A1 Yes! When talking about foods open with pics of real meals, not clipart. Discuss ingredients/location https://t.co/7Ae5McClAx
A1 The vocab (clothing, free-time activities, etc.) can often be modified or represented visually w images from the target culture.
yes! Been doing these in level 2. Trying to show differences in colegios vs prepas vs institutos.
Someday, this is the goal. https://t.co/2nzpz26UFF
A1: well I do not use a textbook at all, so my units are centered on culture & student interest
A1- How about making units around culture/interests rather than adpating units to them
please come to so I can finally meet you!
Q1 Q1What elements of your current textbook/units could easily be adapted to reflect interests/culture? https://t.co/IbSJ8moMuS
Obviously food, school etc but I really like daily routine for good
*drops the mic* Heck yes! https://t.co/Nns3Futmyt
A1- How about making units around culture/interests rather than adpating units to them
Having the vocab/grammar be similar let's me use textbk resources when necessary, w/o re-inventing the wheel.
For my last unit on cultural identity, I used an article on hipster & asked if Ss identify or not.
Hard to do in a large district with 5 HS, 5 MS and school of choice https://t.co/fOs2o5CWga
A1- How about making units around culture/interests rather than adpating units to them
Student voice is best way to reach their interests.
. A1 - every unit book I do - some 'base' vocabulary and an empty page titled 'stuff we want to know/use'
Yes. We have to accept that there actually are some good resources in textbook programs.
Hi, coming a little late- Julie, K-4 Spanish in Maine. I have never used a textbk at elem level yay! My curric is student ctrd
A1at my school we follow the vocabulary and grammar topics, but mak our own activities
Student voice is best way to reach their interests.
A1- I love the freedom of teaching w/o a textbook and have been doing it for four years now!
A1 we can try to rewrite and rewrite a unit/chapter EQ until it has an inherent cultural element
Kim from N. IN joining late! Spanish, grades 7&8.
A1: I "steal" the themes from the text, but that's it!
A1 student interest coupled w high freq vocab & culture integrated throughout
Oh, don't we wish that we could! Trying to start small!
I think this is critical to help us keep our sights on the target of integrating culture!
I'm with you - I've kept many of them...just done my own thing with 'em....
ahhhh! my entire curric :)
Amanda from KS. Spanish. Joining late!
I love using My Language Guide for student inquiry and interet https://t.co/PX5pK2awpg
. A1 - every unit book I do - some 'base' vocabulary and an empty page titled 'stuff we want to know/use'
Q2 up now! Q2 How can we give students opportunities to direct the course of pre-existing units? https://t.co/kUGySQ9EYV
I've done that too. But I like having the useful resources from a textbk. I do the hybrid thing now and really love it.
Anyone else found Ss struggle with their own vocab choices? Ss have the school culture of "tell me what to do" not "I'll tell you."
Q2 Q2 Well now...How can we give students opportunities to direct the course of pre-existing units? https://t.co/p3SyCUJvvn
A1. When we were forced to adopt a text, my thought was to use the photos & art...(haven't done it tho)
A1 Was tough to unlearn how I was taught to teach and embrace that culture is not a 'which day' but rather 'which way', every day.
I still use some of the ¡Ven conmigo! videos even though I adopted TPRS/TCI years ago
A2 Allowing students to interact with native speakers via Twitter or Instagram allows for CURRENT events to come into play!
That's why I always have a 'base set'. Then they start to say "but I want to say..."
A2 asked for photos of festivals from Ss, discovered one in Africa he had no idea about
We have Tier1 vocab (requ'd) and then Tier2 (personal/class) vocab we add as we go.
A1 my school has an ongoing exchange program & I center ideas around "prepping" for participating in it
A2 put simply, make them. They need to embrace some autonomy
A2: I've talked about my match/scrap with curriculum doc--whether or not Ss like the curric as is or for student choice.
Yes! When I give Ss chance to tell me what words they need to complete a task, they struggle! https://t.co/ic8G9qXDWm
Anyone else found Ss struggle with their own vocab choices? Ss have the school culture of "tell me what to do" not "I'll tell you."
A2: letting students pick some more vocab words that are relevant for them
A2- I love allowing students to build part of their own vocab list on a topic- keeps their interest and personalizes the learning
A2 Student led creative projects through and through
But it's do-able!! https://t.co/DEp7Zvp2eW
A1 Was tough to unlearn how I was taught to teach and embrace that culture is not a 'which day' but rather 'which way', every day.
A2 Surveys! Even in English, ask them what they want to know about, where the stories should go, etc, but make it in TL for them
Right! Been working hard to show them the value of want to say.
ditto - and my Ss prefer the Tier2 vocab bc it's more real and authentic
for me, student centered. Other classes, test directed
A2: when teaching novels give options of How is is read & What is done with the material
A2b This is what I've done in my classes to garner more student choice and put the onus on them: https://t.co/fpCP8yxjcW .
but photos are quickly out of date... Better from social media!
A2 I'm working to get better at this....'choose how you show me you...' https://t.co/l6niHhBc6E
A2: when teaching novels give options of How is is read & What is done with the material
A2 I grappled w the "I'm not a human dictionary" mindset. Yes I am, hello, I'm the teacher, & they're asking 4 relevant vocab.
I'm still trying to break the cycle of teaching how I was taught, too!
I find giving a limited choice easier for my sts to access than unlimited choice
A2 encourage/coerce student creation if EQ's
suggestions on that one Ss that wants to know EVERYTHING bc s/he doesn't want to get it wrong...especially on tests
Oh I think we all are - and thank goodness for the amazing leadership on ! https://t.co/shbqpvx7z1
I'm still trying to break the cycle of teaching how I was taught, too!
yes, student choice with teacher guidance.
A2 Yes!! Goal-setting is huge, plus the interest piece, & vocabulary, & relationships. All moving parts.
Hola ! Laura in NC umping in late after 4yo's last football game (and touchdown!) of the season!
Suggestion? No more tests. How about frequent assessments in all domains, many chances to show learning
A2 I ask Ss to brainstorm vocab that they'll need, if it leans one way, I'll direct the unit in that way.
Word walls & interactive notebooks a la .
Whoot go Lena! We're on Q2 Q2How can we give students opportunities to direct the course of pre-existing units?
we call it 'choice within structure' at our school, I find it so helpful
A1 my school has an ongoing exchange program & I center ideas around "prepping" for participating in it
I'd say the hybrid thing. We stick to AP themes but they are so broad Ss choose their own research topics
A2 i want to start a post-it word wall for questions/words Ss want to know.
A2 like many others, i try to encourage choice in vocab & in how we can apply it thru context
Glad to help out! https://t.co/gETNgRD3CQ
never thought to survey about it... hmmm... I feel a Google Form coming on... THANKS
wouldn't it be nice for kids to pick when they are ready to be assessed?
A2 I like to have students pick a direction for their PBL project & group accordingly; ex: type of product to market
Yes - it is my big thing. Starts in yr 1 - my Ss know how to explain, act it out and rescue!
also supports kids who find retrieval difficult, & allows them to show what they know, not what they don't know
I found starting the year with what they want to read, hear, and see in TL worked wonders!
is key! We have a purple ball & an iPad jail in class, so they quickly learn "la pelota morada" & "la cárcel"
to quote Forbes on Google's 20% time: "Structure nurtures, rather than hinders, innovation"
use the google form, put the words in a word cloud and you know which words are high interest for sts
A2 I also think keeping it personal helps. The kids love to talk about themselves & I try to give up them stuff to say
WORD. We want them to NEGOTIATE meaning--better with a speaker than a dictionary, right? https://t.co/BUKZqLiMxF
A2 I grappled w the "I'm not a human dictionary" mindset. Yes I am, hello, I'm the teacher, & they're asking 4 relevant vocab.
do you do so w/convo or other way?
Oh thank you for this...I like a little structure - and kids like it too!
every way! They use their own examples for contexts in notes, convo, blogs...
oh heck yes! I once thought setting my little butterflies free would be ultimate liberation
Absolutely - well said - I am a 'coach' not a 'dictionary'! Side benefit - I add to my vocab too! https://t.co/MCN5pWQHrN
How do you do goal setting meaningfully w/ novices? I find they don't know enough to know what they want wrt TL...
our principl shared that 2 much choice is overwhelming & doesn't move kids forward
the more I make them stick to top 10 verbs we always use the less I see this
how do you find out what they want to see etc??
A3: drop it? Why teach them camping words?!
A3 I either abridge it or ask for lots of S input. "How would you make this relevant?"
Q3 if its keeping a link to the TB I look to when/where I would actually encounter the topic in real life
A3 Take out the original story, make one up based on student interests, or find something more compelling in general
A3 good question! luckily I have lots of freedom over my curriculum (which is basic anyway in 7th/8th grade)
Heck, I'm still figuring that part out as I go! Their interests meshed w/ proficiency level skills / goals.
I start with what they watch etc in L1, offer some enticing music, books, magazines, Pinterest pins, etc
Golly - you ask? https://t.co/spWQ5MfLVx
A3 I either abridge it or ask for lots of S input. "How would you make this relevant?"
Q3 this is challenging for me. Camping? Skiing? Windsurfing? My MSers could care less
A3 mix in some music. ,sr wooly
A3. Chuck it! Throw the "must have" vocab in somewhere else.
I like idea here - so what IS interesting for YOU? https://t.co/O9dM0aZrWH
Q3 this is challenging for me. Camping? Skiing? Windsurfing? My MSers could care less
A3 find anything to make it fun for them - music/videos are great. & always giving context - if i don't say it, they list options
Hola Joining in from Minnesota! Spanish teacher 1 and 2 teacher.
A3: yes, a Latiny question. Bringing in pictures or real artifacts, images of people, weird facts can raise student interest.
A3- why is it required? What about it is essential to learn/understand/use in the TL? Stick to only what's necessary an go with it
movie talk a youtube vid of extreme sports
YESS. When you don't have to worry about EVERYTHING, you can focus your growth a LOT better! https://t.co/J41RvwDZU0
to quote Forbes on Google's 20% time: "Structure nurtures, rather than hinders, innovation"
A3 Currently I'm toying with throwing that vocab in when it comes up naturally, rather than learning all at once!
daily routine and move on! Who goes camping in their daily routine?!
A3 If it starts to feel too contrived, I'm modifying the content!
Once upon a time I was teaching about winter sports, then I asked Ss if they'd rather talk abt summer sports instead.
makes forming sentences from the start super easy
A3 I will pare it down to the essentials and supplement with their interests/words
A3: I do not have any required units 💁🏻 but if I did I would chuck it.
A3 In Latin this usually involves some use of the ablative only seen in one line of Caesar, so just get rid of it & forget it
Okay - don't go all rogue......
A3 reminded me of this in the summer: "if you have to think of an auth task & assessment that hard, then it's contrived."
man, they NEED it. That's why they have school instead of just the internet!
If a unit does not mesh with student or cultural interests why are you teaching it-- unless its survival language..
I like this - is it really needed? https://t.co/U6NxZH4LXn
A3 In Latin this usually involves some use of the ablative only seen in one line of Caesar, so just get rid of it & forget it
I tried movietalk for the 1st time this week. Ss got ALL the vocab & 90% TL. It's my newest fav thing!!
Maybe I'll come up with a little rubric or something--4 being most jazzed to 1 being barf on a topic.
A3 Truth? Close the door and subvert. OK that's a lie. It may catch up to me...some day...
"On a scale of barf to jazz-hand-dabbing, how do we feel about ____. Bueller? Bueller?"
LOL...hence the "once upon a time..." ;)
A3 Oh, so you're saying numbers 1-100, colors, and greetings don't make for the most relevant first unit?
A3 Reduce, reuse, recycle? Sometimes the next unit can come by digging deeper.
have you seen the signs?! I want to do that but I'm not the only teacher in each room!
it's amazing what they absorb when their head is not down in a book!
A3 I try to blend it somewhere else if I can. Especially since i have to make sure it's taught bc must have common courses
YES! A3 My Ss last year left class every day saying, "Fight me! Love you!" in Spanish because we had used… https://t.co/zWzxGnvudu
it's amazing what they absorb when their head is not down in a book!
Addendum: Find times in other lessons to bring in numbers, etc as non-targeted CI https://t.co/ZOJxquW3Uc
One thing Latin doesn't really have, although I do find it weird that kids do want to learn numbers because Spanish… https://t.co/IteCECUXl1
unless they are engaged in a awesome authentic text!
I moved kids out from behind their tables too. Movietheater style. Ss were super engaged!
I dont teach nmbr anymore. Hand out notes, we do calendar, count how many days on school. Vary cntng methods.
Q4 Q4 How can we integrate both Big C Culture and Little C Culture into our instructional units? https://t.co/k3oDjTfcL0
A3: also I feel like the more in depth I go, the better they remember. They aren't remembering those camping words anyway...
A3 I love this idea, in theory. In practice, I fear that I will forget to teach the 2nd half/other important part/etc.
Hey hey, I love numbers, & playing BOMBAX makes for a good brainbreak. https://t.co/ZTWf8qdgvK
One thing Latin doesn't really have, although I do find it weird that kids do want to learn numbers because Spanish… https://t.co/IteCECUXl1
A4 For me it's all about learning more about the culture myself. I have such a limited view of Francophone world!
Hey, , join your ole Spanish teacher on a teachery chat, prove my point, cómo se dice "fight/wrestle me!" en español?
mine is like this now (in my 1st yr here). i've been giving so much context & culture because it's painful without
A4 I love using Hispanic artists' work to demonstrate target vocab. is great!
Q4 Q4How can we integrate both Big C Culture and Little C Culture into our instructional units? https://t.co/QElQQZAmUH
SOMEBODY GET THIS LADY A ROOFTOP TO SHOUT FROM! https://t.co/nFpHzU50bh

I dont teach nmbr anymore. Hand out notes, we do calendar, count how many days on school. Vary cntng methods.
A4 Using is a big one for integrating culture. Plus our own experiences from travel/friends/family.
A4 Latin's got Big C covered well. Lots of myth and history. But little c is lacking. CLC addresses it a little but we need more
A4: I just learned a new game/chant ("atención") from a Colombian family and promptly stole it to use in my classroom!
A3: what Ss are still using at end of year will probably stay in unit for next year's Ss https://t.co/Y5TenhWFHA
A3: also I feel like the more in depth I go, the better they remember. They aren't remembering those camping words anyway...
feels like a solid picture talk.
A4 I'm just gonna quote other people tonight- this time : Culture ought to be the story, not appear in the story.
What is meant by big C vs little c culture?
DUDE. Since I've been working colors, numbers, etc in along the way, kids remember at LEAST as well
I love using Frida to enhance my descriptions & clothing unit and then tying in little c with what people wear in other countries
A4 the more authentic resources, the better!
A3 / A4 An even higher point from which to drop the micccccc. YES. WHY do we force irrelevant material on… https://t.co/IcvY3pWgf6
SOMEBODY GET THIS LADY A ROOFTOP TO SHOUT FROM! https://t.co/nFpHzU50bh
If a unit does not mesh with student or cultural interests why are you teaching it-- unless its survival language..
YESSSS! https://t.co/QtuYB4IJqT
DUDE. Since I've been working colors, numbers, etc in along the way, kids remember at LEAST as well
yes! When possible, use menus from travels or flyers from supermercados
I know! I do a little Dia de los Muertos but wish I would figure out how to fit some more in
seriously. Academia has GOT to get over itself. Our role is not to weed out the unworthy but feed everyone's ideas!
Target Language Culture and cultural interactions
A4 Love using , even more after told me, "Don't change the text, change the TASK" 4 diff levels. Game changer.
A4 I think it's the little things like showing them a piece of art, or a song to tie in both C and c
and get more "required" number practice in
I try to provide as much culture of all kinds every single class, whether that's losing a tooth traditions or a sayin
yes! We're using FaceTime to talk to a school in Argentina & sts are loving it!
A4 The opportunities sometimes present by themselves. Choosing the right visual, text or audio. Using Technology plays a big part.
A4 Class social media is fun for little c for sure, and interpersonal writing on the fly! Esp Snapchat.
YES!!!!!!! https://t.co/XIK1f2OFGg
A4 I'm just gonna quote other people tonight- this time : Culture ought to be the story, not appear in the story.
"I like this. This is mine now."
A4-- so many of the big Cs are cliche and even stereotypical-- I like teaching the little things we see or understand differently-
A4 making connections and helping Ss understand their own culture helps me
I have done the music thing to death- but never realized until a few years ago how much SS love art! a great focal point for comm
yes! They want to communicate about more than they've learned!
I need to use Snapchat! How do you use it?
I've been slacking on both Culture & culture. Need to zero in on any of it time to time!
A4 use famous hispanisc and larinos in lessons¿dónde está Shakira? -Al lado de la silla
A4 I use it a ton! Announcements, reminders, individ messages, QR code scavenger hunt this week, … https://t.co/1wA2mDy9xX
I need to use Snapchat! How do you use it?
Whew, ducking out from early - thanks, everyone, for giving me so much to think about! You all inspire me!
A5 I assess the task that uses the cultural task as its springboard.
A5 I dont assess these, usually. Unless a reflection or compare/contrast
so cool! Was it a summer class?
A4: little c culture is what students ❤️ - Real life of real people around the world right now. What they eat, wear etc
A5 the AP exam inspired me to add an entire cultural competence box on my rubric based on ACTFL standards https://t.co/6uS4yjrXzg
Carmen Lomas Garza is a goldmine!
Oo, THIS I can work with! Great "everyday IPA" session at made me want to do more of this anyway! https://t.co/b6r2ashkjf
A4 I think it's the little things like showing them a piece of art, or a song to tie in both C and c
a lot of Ss think art is boring until they know the story behind it
A5: I have 3P's on a rubric. Ss must identify all 3 in TL. Lower levels can do this! Make the 3 P's Novice-friendly
A5 I usually assign cultural topics as PowerPoint projects or movies - mainly in English though with some Latin component
A5 I've been bringing in cultural tasks like AP does it--use any cultural info you might know jargon jargon actual prompt.
A4 Themed warmups every day that are catered to the current content or isolated lang struc game changed: https://t.co/Xmm3xOR2R6
if anyone would know, it's ! PS my kids are little Franco experts thanks to her!
The assessment should include culture itself. Prompts that make the student elaborate keeping in a cultural piece.
pick an idiom & incorporate it into class, incorporate auth gestures when you are speaking, etc :)
A4 YASSSSS! A year later, remembers it. Student interest means making it MEMORABLE, not memo… https://t.co/9d1DMlLWY6
I like having my Ss experience what we've studied by making a food or recreating a custom at home
no it was a 3rd trimester elective! It was a sneaky Spanish 1+ to help prepare some for Spanish 2
A5 we'd be remiss to not mention is about to come out with their Can-Do statements for Intercultural Communication
Hello friends! Angela from Chicago. It's my 1st free Thurs in awhile! Missed this!!Sp2 & 3
My sts LOVED learning about
Each of my units (6 weeks) has one set of 3P's. Ss use the unit's vocab/structures to respond. The unit is nested in the culture.
WOW! This is where I want to go! https://t.co/08jbLEGV3b
Each of my units (6 weeks) has one set of 3P's. Ss use the unit's vocab/structures to respond. The unit is nested in the culture.
A4 QR code scavenger hunt this week w/ Snapchat - they scan codes, act out caption, sent me live snaps: https://t.co/fGaDpQ5KiP
A5 - it's such a broad topic, we can only touch/assess the tip of the iceberg- it's more about teaching empathy and an open mind
A5 If I could ever wrap my head around IPAs that might be a way to assess culture, but for now I will use a variety of things
They are incorporated into my 3 modes rubrics. b/c what are Ss going to talk about in assessment? CULTURE! PM me
TA you CAN use pre-existing resources ...that's okay ...and adjust to your & their liking...!
A5 for my little kiddos, "Draw 4 things you might see in Venezuela" (at the end of our "trip" to Venezuela theme) or 1/2
TA: Even on a very Thursday, gives me the support and inspiration I need.
yes! We had a great review of imperfect tense talking about childhood today!
TA: the more I integrate culture (and take notes/reflect), the better I am able to do it in future units and next year!
My TA is to get back to my roots an to reach out to my pals for ideas on student interest.
A5 2/2 or doing a venn diagram comparing/contrasting chocolate caliente and hot chocolate in the US
TA- ASKING students to create detours in MY roadmap might be beneficial- find out what they want to learn or be able to talk about
Awesomely put! https://t.co/rDilpTxzw4
TA- ASKING students to create detours in MY roadmap might be beneficial- find out what they want to learn or be able to talk about
TA: Feeling supported knowing that other Ts are adapting but still using resources from textbks.
Thanks to being with us (and in civvies as it were! )
TA there are so many ways to tch language -required or not- w/o use of amemorized list. Movie talk, art, music
TA I'm going to try to give students more input in their vocabulary list.
TA surveys, post-it notes w/words students want to learn, more effort in big C/little c/and student c! https://t.co/n2Vu1SCUb7
Thanks again to & for being here to co-mod (& in civvies as it were!)
TA The never ending question- why am I teaching this unit? is there something else I should be teaching instead?
takeaway: I'm now following !
awesome chat, amigas! (and amigos!)
