Welcome to #GlobalEdChat! Please share your favorite snowball/icee flavor that helps you beat your region’s summer heat...and for our southern hemisphere friends, share your favorite winter hot drink!
Mike, Tech Integrator from New York and President of the Marialice/Bronwyn/Margret Fan Club. Sign me up for any tropical flavored Icee/Snow Cone. #globaledchat
Hey y'all! I'm Margret, and I teach middle school ELA in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My Ss have an #EdCorps, @UpstanderBrand, and I value student voice and global collaboration. It gets pretty hot in BR, so I will always take a coconut-flavored snowball! #GlobalEdChat
Hi #GlobalEdchat I'm Barbara from Oakland, CA where the weather is perfect right now 70 degrees. I'm drinking a latte with hazelnut. Great to be here. Love ice cream also :o)
It's another Heather from @AsiaSocietyEDU! Can you handle 2 of us here at #Globaledchat? @hsingmaster, I loooove all kinds of ice cream in the summer. Or a margarita for a treat of another kind.

Hello! My name is Amy Storer, and I am an instructional coach in Montgomery, TX. Happy to be here!! Orange Creamsicle is my favorite snow cone flavor! #GlobalEdChat
A1 We must harness authentic traits such as empathy, compassion, and confidence. Ts can support this by providing safe spaces to share & also stumble. Confidence grows as a result. These directly overlap with some skills needed for global collaboration. #globaledchat#stuvoice
A1: Awareness and respect for other perspectives, empathy, research & critical thinking, communication across audiences, listening #GlobalEdChat#Globalcompetencies#stuvoice
A1 We need to start with empathy! @EmpaticoOrg is the perfect way for grades 1-5 teachers to embed these skills! Sign up today! #WhyWait We need opportunities like this to learn about the world with the world #globaledchat#digcit4good
A1 - Students must be able to speak for themselves and have a perspective. Students misunderstand the idea of perspective and opinion. They are gateways into understanding an argument and finding compromise in a real world setting. #Globaledchat
A1 I think decision-making skills are a must for nurturing youth voice. This skill supports global collaboration b/c youth need to be able to make informed decisions on joint projects and on how to work together. #Globaledchat
A1: Authentic skills are productive struggle, teamwork, along with empathy and compassion. It is about building agency and confidence to push beyond school for global collaboration #GlobalEdChat
A1 We have collaborated with a variety of classrooms over the years, but @ElliePrimary1 stands out because her students solve real problems in local, global & digital communities https://t.co/e2s8dxc9Cy & her class is always singing! #globaledchat

A1: aligning your district's learning/exit outcomes to complement #globalcompetences will create many learning spaces that can support this! #GlobalEdChat
A1: Students need to know how to listen and be open to multiple perspectives , give effective feedback, and work collaboratively with others. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Many kids find that when they do global projects they build authentic skills. They learn how to work collaboratively, build active listening skills, and critical thinking skills. Global projects work hand-in-hand with authentic skills. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Technology fluency, evaluation of resources, research skills, self advocacy, collaboration, problem solving > all necessary to be global citizens and learners #globaledchat#stuvoice#OLSDBlendEd
A1: Our students must know that they have our trust and a safe place to share their voices. They also need to know that struggle is a good thing! #GlobalEdChat
A1 Agreed, @bbray27 that empathy and compassion are needed. So really to work with others and take on global challenges, we need to learn social-emotional skills. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Authentic skills are productive struggle, teamwork, along with empathy and compassion. It is about building agency and confidence to push beyond school for global collaboration #GlobalEdChat
A1: Authentic skills are productive struggle, teamwork, along with empathy and compassion. It is about building agency and confidence to push beyond school for global collaboration #GlobalEdChat
The often part is so important. I get stuck on students that say they don't care or have an opinion. As Henry Rollins said, "If you don't have an opinion, go outside and one will find you." Students need to know point of views matter and they should honor them. #globaledchat
A1: One of the most important skills for student voice is listening. The better you listen, the better you communicate. For young people’s voices to be most effective, their ability to listen and tailor their message accordingly is key #GlobalEdChat#StuVoice@youthdriven
A1 We need to foster a feeling of community, respect for each other and other communities, empathy, a desire to know and understand each other. #Globaledchat
A1) Listening, empathy, and the habits of highly effective people, including seeking to understand before being understood. Voices become heard if they understand the listener; this is necessary whether the collaboration is interpersonal or global. #GlobalEdChat
A2 My new favorite phrase is now #creativechaos. My feelings are that if we work hard enough to encourage it, we won't have to work so hard to harness it. Working within this environment could eventually feel like the norm. Is this a bad thing? #globaledchat#stuvoice
I was just having this conversation today about the art of civil discourse and how we've lost our way! What simplicity when you think about it -- to be heard and to listen! #globaledchat
A1 Ss need to be able to communicate and collaborate, develop protocols for accessing and expressing their ideas in productive and respectful ways @P21Learning#Globaledchat
A2: Most students just want a place, a "podium", to share their voice. Give them the tools and the freedom to choose how they share their voice, and great things will come from it!
A2 I made this @Flipgrid for my teacher bc I saw connected edus making welcome back to school messages https://t.co/5EvAOWDVqC but #stuvoice#stuchoice is not a part of every classroom & school. I wish teachers would ask how we'd like to learn #globaledchat
A2: Never had much of a problem w/ the chaos. Seriously. But if there is an issue it is getting them to understand that I want their authentic selves & to listen to each other.#GlobalEdChat
A1: Students need to be able to formulate authentic questions and respect the opinions of others. @RightQuestion has the Question Formulation Technique which is good for fostering both of these. https://t.co/DlGBU8FFlw
A2: We have to help students set realistic goals and outcomes. We also need to prepare them by making sure they are knowledgeable about all sides of the issues they are passionate about voicing. #globaledchat
giving effective feedback is something that everyone needs to practice. add listening to that skill set, and the world will be a better place. #GlobalEdChat
A2: ask students to demonstrate mathematical understanding and ideas in multiple ways: graphs, charts, pictures, equations, words, etc… encourage students to enter the modeling cycle to revisit and refine solutions with increased sophistication #GlobalEdChat#OLSDBlendEd
A2: I think we work with young people to figure out what they want and where they want to go. The more open and collaborative the entire process is, the more ownership we all share, the richer the learning experience #GlobalEdChat
That is all about building relationships and I love how that starts before they even begin school! @CurranCentral added his @Flipgrid#backtoschool message as an example for the chat tonight! #globaledchat
A2 Educators can provide structures and prompts, but not micromanage everything. It can be hard with the timeline and pressure to "deliver" standards/outcomes, but we can't foster agency w/o letting youth try, fail. Facilitate, don't dominate. #GlobalEdChat
A2: for my @NationalHistory student research committee, a student read one of my textbooks (Dr. Doll's Chaos, Complexity, Curriculum, and Culture). She wrote this: "...chaos is not a bad thing...it's the start of learning, creativity, ideas, and advancement." #GlobalEdChat
evaluation of resources and fluency with resources only can continue to strengthen efforts. thanks for bringing those ideas to the forefront of our minds. #Globaledchat
A2 - Be the resource, not the source. Give students the information, the options and go into monitoring and question answer mode. I did a 20% time project with my students and they took off so quickly without little input from me (other than technical questions). #Globaledchat
A1) When broken down, every successful global project allows students to acquire and enhance the #4Cs. Without which, most projects fall short of expectations. #Globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A2 we created cultural conversations. Our sociology class spoke with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 about gender inequality. Questions were developed by classes and the Ss answered them. Great opportunity to learn/interact with peers from another nation. Ss were engaged
She really is our favorite classroom! We *tried to make a Scottish recipe she sent for Immigration Day at @Curran's School today! #EpicFail since our batch looked more like fudge, but love that we are always learning together #GlobalEdChat
A2 Science teaching can be chaotic, but the best opportunities for learning can come out of that chaos. Ts need to trust the process and let go a bit #Globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A2 we created cultural conversations. Our sociology class spoke with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 about gender inequality. Questions were developed by classes and the Ss answered them. Great opportunity to learn/interact with peers from another nation. Ss were engaged
I was thinking that too @TaraNuth. Maybe it's not really chaos then if there is structure? Or maybe it's more about letting go w/in the structure, so it's managed but not really chaos? #Globaledchat
A3: Community initiatives like Forum 35's Public Education Project can give validation to student voice. Our young leaders in the community understand the importance of the younger generation being part of the larger conversation. #stuvoice#GlobalEdChat
I think a lot of time it comes from a place of fear. They don't want to say what they think due to being misunderstood. However, I do have some students that just flat have no opinions and its them that I worry mostly about. #GlobalEdChat
A3 Community initiatives show where a direct local need exists. When Ss take an active role in improving their community, they also take an active role in improving their world. This often involves collaboration from multiple parties. #ThinkGlobalActLocal#globaledchat#stuvoice
A3: if you haven't heard about @goleadlocal, you should check them out. They can help develop leadership skills that will support any #global collaboration. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
A3: With projects like career exploration, leadership kill refinement programs, and mentorships with local schools, we can take part in having students’ voices reach our community leaders’ ears. Students can definitely make a difference. #stuvoice#GlobalEdChat
#GlobalEdChat A2 Also spoke with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽. Topic was current issues. Our students did a good job defending their point of view. Learned how to agree to disagree. Wonderful chance for them to communicate ideas and thoughts.
The importance of belonging as our students recycle: Who am I? How do others view me? Where do I fit in? They need to know they belong, they matter & they are what make our community a welcoming place for all! #globaledchat
A2 We can teach the process. Teach our students to ask "So what?" Take an idea and develop a plan of action. If we can teach them how to think through the process, they will produce! #Globaledchat
A3: in my local community, Baton Rouge, @Forum35 has multiple partnerships, with both schools and other community services. My Ss can talk with the young professionals to better understand how to make a difference. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
A3: It is important that our students know and understand that our classroom ceiling isn't their ceiling for learning. Get them involved with the community and giving back. Show them the power in connections and empathy. #GlobalEdChat
A3: if you haven't heard about @goleadlocal, you should check them out. They can help develop leadership skills that will support any #global collaboration. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
A3) The smaller the room (the local community), the bigger the voice. But their effort can have global impact by connecting with others around the world and solving a problem across the world. #GlobalEdChat
A3: The idea of creating discussions around community issues help identify local issues that are global. Bringing in community partners locally and globally opens the world to your kids around authentic real-world problems. #GlobalEdChat
Another great resource! @hsingmaster is on a roll! I love these PM tools. They help people like me have some structure & common language to use with others so expectations and processes are managed. #globaledchat
A2: Project management helps keep educators organized and sane during students' creative chaos. They have a fantastic toolkit to help: https://t.co/vTGGfk0miQ@pmief
A3: We are only as strong as the communities that support us and our work. When we join students with community initiatives, it amplifies their voice and ignites action! #globaledchat
I am with you! It's like when you learn a new vocabulary word and you want to practice it as many times as possible! I expect we'll be seeing it in a lot tweets this week! #creativechaos#GlobalEdChat
Before kids can participate in community they have to start at school ... how can they contribute at school and then expand. We have to get them caring. #globaledchat
A3: if you haven't heard about @goleadlocal, you should check them out. They can help develop leadership skills that will support any #global collaboration. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
A3 - If there is a community surrounding the student and encouraging them to take ownership of their perspectives, then students are more likely to engage. I try to bring in guest speakers as a sparking mechanism for students at the beginning of the year. #Globaledchat
It's chaos - to an outsider. But, it's like a playground, a theatre, a .... There needs to be structure but kids need to have opportunities to have developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Movement, action, noise, quiet, calm #globaledchat
For the first students, I'd hope school provides them that safe space to learn how to express yourself accurately, or not. For the others, you're right, being entirely disengaged is worrisome. But maybe part of that also is fear of engaging? #GlobalEdChat
A3: in my local community, Baton Rouge, @Forum35 has multiple partnerships, with both schools and other community services. My Ss can talk with the young professionals to better understand how to make a difference. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
Curran would totally agree with this & as you know he has not had this experience in school! BUT this is what fuels us as a mother/son team to advocate for global collaboration for all students everywhere! #GlobalEdChat
Our ELA teacher did a great activity having the kids raise funds for backpacks for kids in Syria. small group planned and led the whole process
#globaledchat
You are the best reason for us all to be here tonight! Thank you for all that you do in your classroom! The @UpstanderBrand inspires us all! #GlobalEdChat
It might be fear of engaging masquerading as disengagement, or just as human I hope that deep down they have opinions. As for the first part, I think my school does. I try to allow all opinions and perspectives given they are not hate speech. #GlobalEdChat
A1 #GlobalEdChat Student interest should be taken into account when providing opportunities for choice. creating opportunities for students to learn from each other re: global collaboration on desirable topics.
#GlobalEdChat A3) Community initiatives are no doubt universal initiatives with a local flavor. Participating students see themselves as empowered problem solvers, and the community sees them as brilliant, compassionate, & employable.
A3: I use “The What! So What! Now What” approach to discussing critical reflection around community issues https://t.co/elEHySiJCn this helps prompt conversations and empowers #stuvoice around authentic real-world issues #rethink_learning#GlobalEdChat
I think this is right, but I think it’s insufficient. It’s more than just allowing them to pursue their interests. It’s also welcoming the outcomes and results of those pursuits. If they decide how they go, but adults decide where they go, it’s inauthentic #GlobalEdChat
I struggle with facilitation. Maybe it's just the word. Yet, I agree with don't dominate. Conversation, lectures, hands on activities, more are all needed. Right tool Right time. #globaledchat
A4 - Tools like @Google and @Flipgrid are great mediums for allowing and elaborating on student voice. However, just basic things like recording audio or video on their phones can allow students that would not normally speak up to have a voice. Be flexible. #Globaledchat
A4 I am loving all the digital tools for global collaboration like @Flipgrid and @Seesaw are some of the ways Ts can begin integrating #stuvoice#globaledchat
A4: First, connect them to other students and then ask the magic words—how could YOU make this idea better? They never...ever...ever fail to amaze me with something better. #globaledchat
A4: @TeacherWinters just said someone that I totally agree with! Be flexible! There are so many great tools out there, but let them decide how they want to make those connections. #GlobalEdChat
A4: First, connect them to other students and then ask the magic words—how could YOU make this idea better? They never...ever...ever fail to amaze me with something better. #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A4) Remove obstacles and provide opportunities w/guidance. The tools change constantly, but our SEL and communication values are constant.
You're welcome. They have 2 summer institutes. One on the Civil War and the other on Reconstruction. Free / limited cost. Can also get graduate credit. #globaledchat

A5: Model collaboration locally first with critical friends protocol, then introduce students to resources to connect with others on a global level. Encourage students to appropriately seek and share with source citation and evidence. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice#OLSDBlendEd
A5: We model by doing! @JoyceBronwyn@mbfxc and I have video calls and share the power of connecting globally with our Ss (and @CurranCentral!). From connections with others, collaboration can be the next step. #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice
#GlobalEdChat A4 One of the best experiences we had this year. Our 2nd/3rd Graders shared questions with @galilevari class in Tel Aviv, Israel 🇮🇱. When we finished our classes shared the Pledge, they sang their national anthem.
A5: Share how you collaborate globally. Bring in examples from Twitter how you connected with other educators around the world. Model how you found local issues and how they connected globally. #GlobalEdChat
A4)Using technology can connect students’ voice to create a global impact by not just being leaders to make these ideas happen but, creating leaders that can share ideas. Technology contributes to these ideas and makes them even bigger than we can imagine! #GlobalEdChat#EdCorps
A5 I talk about my friends around the world and discuss their culture and lives. Every year I get students who come and ask me how I know so many people around the world and I say "Traveling as a teacher" and you can see the gears turning that teaching can be cool. #Globaledchat
everything is a balance. I've found. The pendulum. What is exactly.right.for.this.moment. It takes so much reflection. But it is so worth it. #GlobalEdChat
A5: Participate in more Twitter chats. Follow other educators and retweet great ideas and resources. Build your PLN and then model what you are doing with your kids. This is their world. Bring them in so they aren't left out. #GlobalEdChat
A4 cross-cultural videoconferencing exchanges. The key to get student voices involved is to have frequent reflection that encourages critical examination #globaledchat
A5: we model by being involved in global collaboration as educators and organically involving our students in the work they are interested in as well. And supporting their work by connecting them to others who can also support them. #globaledchat
Do you use what you learn? Do you connect with other cultures / places / peoples? Do other teachers / professionals see what you're doing on #globaledchat? If so, yes, it counts.
A5 #Globaledchat Making connections with other teachers locally, nationally and globally tells our students that we will go to any lengths to be the best that we can for them...and models the process of idea sharing and collaboration. This is POWERFUL!!!
A5: Be okay about sharing what worked and what didn't work. We learn from our own mistakes. Try some new tools and lessons that stretch and challenge you. Then model that at conferences for other educators. #GlobalEdChat
A4) When I craft a global experience, I transition students from passive observers to active creators by intermixing them with a partnered, international classroom. Then, groups define their research topic and method of delivery....#GlobalEdChat
A1 Developing literacy, communication, questioning, and self-assessment skills through participating in global conversations around meaningful issues will build confidence and further skill upon itself and empower students #GlobalEdChat
That was from me! Laughing! Too many devices open and I can barely keep up! Curran is not at the chat, but he added his responses earlier today! #globaledchat
A5 I talk about my friends around the world and discuss their culture and lives. Every year I get students who come and ask me how I know so many people around the world and I say "Traveling as a teacher" and you can see the gears turning that teaching can be cool. #Globaledchat
A5: I was lucky to meet @rensink_connie at @SXSWEDU and had breakfast with her. Lovely! Reach out and connect with people you meet on social media. You never know what you are going to learning. Hi Connie! #GlobalEdChat
A5 model by collaborating w/ teachers from other cultural places via video conference. Bring that collaboration into the classroom for students to see #globaledchat
#Globaledchat A5 here is a @google tour builder story of our 10 trips around the world. Teaching our Ss the world is a small place. Hopefully to encourage them to travel one day even though I know some will never get an opportunity.
https://t.co/JQD5P5Qisv
A4: @goproject always provides my Ss with inspiration and something to think about. Follow them if you don't already. Learn with them. #GlobalEdChat#StuVoice
Anyone interested in improving how they engage with, support, empower young people MUST check out @youthdriven. They are second to none, in terms of productive, respectful youth—adult relationships #GlobalEdChat
Modeling is key, but do we do it? Do we collaborate across borders w/others? I wonder if we might ask more of Ss than ourselves. Ideally, we'd see modeling as a parallel process w/teaching, but, admittedly, I don't always walk the talk. #GlobalEdChat
A5: we model by being involved in global collaboration as educators and organically involving our students in the work they are interested in as well. And supporting their work by connecting them to others who can also support them. #globaledchat
A6 - Personally, my school is focused on engaging student voice and developing it. That has been so helpful. However, I do feel that places like @NASA, @Skype, and @Flipgrid are trying to engage student voices in new and original ways that students respond well to. #Globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat Q5: by collaborating with other professionals -not only in the teaching prof. Interdisciplinary collaboration can be the example for students.
when I tell people about Twitter chats, I sometimes get blank stares. This is one of the best ways I share ideas and inspration with people. #GlobalEdChat
Whoa! "Teaching is traveling." I like that! That gave me an adjusted perspective, and a fun one, on how I see teaching. Teaching is active exploration, movement, learning by doing, journeying - the very definition of travel! #GlobalEdChat
A5 I talk about my friends around the world and discuss their culture and lives. Every year I get students who come and ask me how I know so many people around the world and I say "Traveling as a teacher" and you can see the gears turning that teaching can be cool. #Globaledchat
Hi everyone I hope you are getting so much out of the global collaboration tips. I’m sitting in a Maths planning day here in Australia. Please ask me any questions and I’ll be in to it. Or track me down at ISTE can not wait to be on US time #globaledchat
The awesome thing is that you can start! I love sharing my progress with global collaborative efforts with students. Growing your #pln is a great way to make this possible! #globaledchat
We probably do. But we also have to design these experiences, grade them, reflect, and more. Besides, we're getting them ready for an "unknown" future. Thus we seem to dump a lot on them .... .... #globaledchat
When I set up my LinkedIn profile that was the word that came to mind to describe who I am and what I do: Storytelling. Increasingly I like to do it in non-writing forms. #GlobalEdChat

A7 So many amazing organizations but have to add #passthescopeedu@edu_match as AMAZING communities who support global collaboration and the power of authentic learning! #GlobalEdChat
A5) When I was still in the classroom, I used to invite teachers to come-in and witness the impact of global collaboration. Students loved the positive attention and felt that their hard work was making an impact. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Technology fluency, evaluation of resources, research skills, self advocacy, collaboration, problem solving > all necessary to be global citizens and learners #globaledchat#stuvoice#OLSDBlendEd
RT@kmar_smith
#GlobalEdChat A6 Check our the @GooglePlus community “Connected Classrooms Workshop.” Great opportunity to connect and collaborate with Ts and Ss around the US and World.
Q7 - I am still a newbie at this, but I truly believe that the teacher needs to be the medium and model for global collaboration. I seek out new tools and learn them to then have the students use them. It needs start with the teacher being globally engaged. #Globaledchat
A7 it’s not specifically student voices but connecting with a Peace Corps Volunteer thru Peace Corp world wise schools can sometimes connect you to a school in that country’s community in which they’re serving. https://t.co/wN3oTBTNbF#globaledchat
Funny, I wasn't even thinking that broadly, just that tech allows you to connect anywhere. This is why I love chats like this. We build on one another's original thoughts! (initiated by @TeacherWinters) #GlobalEdChat
A1 Authentic skills: 1. Build confidence in the quietest voice in the room 2. Enhance listening from the loudest 3. Empower nurturing and a sense of community #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice@fmargret@mbfxc@hsingmaster
A1: Students need an environment that provides "psychological safety " so they build confidence and pride when using their voice (even when others may disagree) #globaledchat
A5) When I was still in the classroom, I used to invite teachers to come-in and witness the impact of global collaboration. Students loved the positive attention and felt that their hard work was making an impact. #Globaledchat

A7: Best resource I would suggest first is the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals #TeachSDGs and also check out the @goproject (Global Oneness Project) with great ideas. #GlobalEdChat
A2 Creative chaos can = beautiful things. Seen this 1st hand in @joinbubble Empowering Ss to create their own groups suddenly introduces the role of caretaker, and Ss genuinely look after their online world and each other #GlobalEdChat#stuvoice@fmargret@mbfxc@hsingmaster
A6) This is difficult for me because I feel companies steer teachers toward low-level experiences and charge you for it. I firmly believe that every teacher has the ability to craft their own dynamic learning experience. Need help? Come to my #ISTE18 session! #GlobalEdChat
