#ETCoaches
A2: I started teaching in 2001. There was no coaching. We closed our doors, taught the curriculum. I had to seek out new ideas and techniques. #ETCoaches
A2. Very little! I had a great mentor teacher who was my department head and our one instructional coach did give a great training on academic vocabulary but that was it.#ETCoaches
A2: I had a new teacher's group that met each week to learn, discuss, and support each other. I found this group invaluable as I faced all the challenges that come with year 1 of teaching! #ETCoaches
A2: As a new teacher, I had a mentor (albeit in a different building) who simply believed in me. She told me not every day would be perfect, but she believed in me #ETCoaches
A2) As a new teacher I was assigned a mentor, but had limited in class support and coaching. I learned a lot about the building and paperwork from my mentor, but I wish we had embraced instructional coaching when I started out. #etcoaches
A2 There was literally NO coaching for me as a new teacher way back when I started (20+yrs). So glad to see great supports now. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C
A2: I was given a mentor as a new teacher. There wasnāt really any ācoaching,ā more of a person there to answer my questions. She did help me through some situations with parents that I will forever be thankful for! #ETCoaches
A2: when I started teaching, the most helpful coaching I got was regarding classroom management. One of my mentor teachers introduced me to whole brain teaching, and it has helped shape my beliefs as a teacher #talklessmovemore#ETCoaches
A2: I had a school-based coach starting in year two. It was job-embedded coaching and met a variety of needs: classroom management, curriculum, data. Coaching provided immediate answers to questions and next steps in being a more effective teacher. #ETCoaches
Q2: I had very limited instructional coaching as a new teacher. My district was very large and even though we had coaches they were spread thin. I had a good mentor who tried to coach but that was most helpful with emotional support! Haha! #ETCoaches
A2- I was SO lucky that my very first job came with the most amazing instructional coach and a supportive mentor program. The PD and support I received between the two was amazing! It was very fluid! #etcoaches
A1. Miranda, Instructional Technology Coach from Prosper ISD in Texas. My first ITC, Cayla Smith, was responsible for getting me excited about instructional tech and eventually encouraged me to become one! #ETCoaches
A2: When I student taught, my cooperating teacher gave little to no coaching -- basically threw me in the figurative deep end! My 1st teaching job had zero coaching, either. Even the position I have now, I had to figure my way on my own. #Persevere#FailForward#ETCoaches
A2: As a new teacher, I wasn't given formal coaching, but I valued the expertise of veteran teachers. Nothing was official, but the climate fostered that. It gave me courage and confidence and really shaped me. I still value what those early mentors taught me. #ETCoaches
Agreed -- when I started 28 years ago, the words "instructional" and "coach" had nothing to do with each other. "Coaching" was basically whatever your principal said you had to work on after an evaluation. #ETCoaches
Proposals for the #ETCoaches Playground at #ISTE19 are now open and will close February 28. The Playground is scheduled for 9:30am - 1:00pm on Tuesday, June 25th, and our theme will be "Edtech Coaches: Helping Teachers Grow". Details at https://t.co/Nn51QCAWgs
A2 I had a mentor, but I can imagine my instructional practices and use of technology would have been much stronger if I had a coach to help me while I was actually teaching. Observing others helped! I needed to observe myself!!! #ETCoaches
Q2: Totally echoing this, Kati! My mentor was my rock for all the crazy-first-year-Teacher issues. I had to search outside my hallways for a ācoachā, and found it through @EdCampYork. Iām pretty sure thatās where I met @autumn_zam and @sunnykinderdays š#ETCoaches
Q2: I had very limited instructional coaching as a new teacher. My district was very large and even though we had coaches they were spread thin. I had a good mentor who tried to coach but that was most helpful with emotional support! Haha! #ETCoaches
I had a few teachers who were great role models when I first started. They encouraged me to listen to my students and to seek out new learning experiences to support them better. #etcoaches
A3: My most effective tool as a teacher was a self-assessment tool & utilizing The Learning Pit 2 help w/student mindset. My most effective tool as a coach is my conferring & small group resources. #ETCoaches
A3: As both a classroom teacher and coach, the most effective tool is time. Time to collaborate, time to build relationships, time to reflect, time to try something new. #ETCoaches
#ETCoaches I feel that a coach is working along with you in the class, where a mentor has their own class and is not able to be there during your lessons.

Q3 #ETCoaches#EDCI325 a very valuable tool was a tool where a peer mapped the number and type of questions you asked and to who, along with wait time Then left you with the map! very Revealing!
A3) Flexibility, listening ears, and trusting relationships. It doesn't matter if your are working with students or teachers, these "tools" are essential to being effective. #etcoaches
A3: The student/teacher points game was a great tool for behavior mgmt for me as an ESL Resource Teacher. As a coach, I love Bitly for creating custom links to send resources to teachers and give students easy access. I also love Google Forms for collecting feedback. #ETCoaches
A3: I think my most effective tool as a teacher and as a coach was/is my ability to connect- connect to people and connect ideas. It builds those neuropathways and informal PLN's. #ETCoaches
A3: I think my most effective tool as a classroom teacher as well as now is my love of learning. I love learning ANYTHING! Because I love learning, I am always trying new things and that keeps things fresh for me and the people I work with, both teachers and students. #ETCoaches
A3: most valuable tool as a teacher? Anything to survey my students to gather data about them- general info, interests, or content! As a coach? My ears and the ability to listen, provide, and reflect. #ETCoaches
A3: my most effective tool as a classroom teacher was collaboration with my grade level team. As an instructional coach Iāve found amazing connections outside the school ranging from other district coaches, EdCamps, & Twitter of course! #ETCoaches
Q3 #ETCoaches#EDCI325 I find curating short videos and pictures of a makered learning tasks and putting them in a Shared Google Photo Album helps us reflect and debrief
A3: Most effective tool as a teacher and a coach is LISTENING. By really listening to understand you can respond effectively. Be learner-driven. It is not about you - it is about them (student/teacher). #ETCoaches
A3 my most valuable tool as a teacher has been Google classroom for everything. I'm not a coach yet, but I would say GAFE products do pretty much everything, so those! #ETCoaches
A3 my most valuable tech tool is GAFE anything, but overall tool is communication skills. Those are the best thing a teacher or coach could possess #ETCoaches
A3 A smile goes a long way. Everyone has a story. I think it is about finding a way to see people (Students or Teachers) and recognizing how they shine. We all have something to give! #bethesunshine#ETCoaches
A4: goal setting and PD is about to drastically change in my district. We are beginning a process to personalize PD and our professional goal is created using a logic model. Huge 2nd order change. #ETCoaches
A3 A smile goes a long way. Everyone has a story. I think it is about finding a way to see people (Students or Teachers) and recognizing how they shine. We all have something to give! #bethesunshine#ETCoaches
A4: The goal setting process involves analyzing student preassessments based on specific learning standards. Then we group students and co-create an action plan on how to support each specific group of students #ETCoaches
A4: I think for many teachers, goals are set based on SLO targets or progress-monitoring data/goals. I would love for more teachers to set goals related to tech integration and student goal setting. #ETCoaches
Q4 #ETCoaches#EDCI325 At one of my schools every teacher set goals and worked with 2-3 peers to work on those goals and collected evidence in a portfolio format- The principal attended an annual presentation or sharing meeting at the goal setting and culminating meeting
Thank you for a great chat tonight #ETCoaches. If you are interested in joining in a conversation about the 5 C's, please slide on over to #fcpslearn at 8:30 pm ET.
Is anyone using #observe me? We are looking into it after reading @katiemartinedu book! If you have not read it... it is a MUST READ before ISTE! #ETCoaches
A4: It's a double-edged sword that our teachers get lots of latitude in setting goals. The parameters are pretty loose so they can set nearly any goal they want for themselves. Great if you've got lots of goals to chase, tough if you're not sure what direction to go. #ETCoaches
A4: @autumn_zam was crucial in implementing a coaching cycle this year that started with targeted goal setting. Our Ts came together to ID common themes, then we all built our goals around the themes. Ts meet with the #learningcoaches throughout the year #growth#ETCoaches
A3. When I was in the classroom it was the student devices themselves. Simply getting devices changed the whole dynamic of the way I taught and Ss learned. Now it is all of the Google tools. They allow me to collaborate with Ts al lver the district in real time! #ETCoaches
Q3- if we are talking tech tools, I used book creator back in 2014 for writing workshop in kinder -still love it! I'd say any "tool" where kids can be creative, collaborate, share w/ parents, get feedback & reflect. Seesaw, Flipgrid, Google apps, kahoot!, Etc. #etcoaches
Wow, very cool! Are most of your teachers able to easily come up with tech goals or does it require some discussion/suggestions from you to generate these goals? #ETCoaches
A1: Playing catch up! Aime Forbes from Northern Vermont. I am new to our Learning Design department at our Supervisory Union. Moved over from tech! Love supporting teachers and staff but still working to find my place #ETCoaches#EDCI325
If you are enjoying our monthly #ETCoaches Twitter Chat, join us for our PLN book study that is taking place through Twitter. There is still time to register. https://t.co/wC1v5yEI4d
A4: Goal setting is done mainly through our evaluation procedures. However, district coaches often lead āchallengesā that involve setting goals and we support teachers in achieving them. #ETCoaches
A4. Right now technology goal setting isnāt really a thing unless it is part of your TTESS goals and I am not privy to that information. Some Ts voluntarily set goals with me and that is very informal. #ETCoaches
A4: We set a goal each time work through a coaching cycle. Teachers need short-term goals and to feel successful, so they can work towards overarching goals. We've been working on setting goals that are rooted in student work - evidence of learning. #ETCoaches
A4- I have tried various goal setting methods and have found it really varies each time. Iāve done student centered and/or teacher centered goals for 4-6 weeks. And for some, Weāve worked on weekly goals we set each week. #etcoaches
A3b My favourite tech tool is #Onenote as teacher & coach. We have shared Dept notebook where we have all our class unit plans/lessons. Great for new teachers or when teaching new classes. Also like observing others' great lessons without being in the class. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert
We started #ObserveMe in our K-2 building at #ChannahonPride. There was lots of enthusiasm, but it has been hard to get it off the ground. It's something I need to do lots more follow-up on as well as more coaching to really get it moving & therefore meaningful. #ETCoaches
A4: Goal setting during coaching cycles can be based on student-centered goals or teacher-centered. The goals are based on whatever the teacher feels they need to focus on. Having a teacher be invested in the Goal always leads 2 the best outcomes for all! #ETCoaches
A4: We have been lucky enough in my district to have Jim Knight and Diane Sweeney training. I tend to be a purist and I had to learn that some teachers wanted goals that were more teacher centered, and some had more student centered. It's okay to live in the gray area #ETCoaches
Our principal had all our teachers incorporate #seesaw into their 5D goals. I just wish I had more time to sit down with teachers individually to discuss their goals and how I can help them be more successful. That is my goalš¤. #etcoaches
A5: They can schedule a time with me via my @Calendly link any time. I also send out a monthly Google Form about specific topics for teachers to sign up. #ETCoaches
A5: I created a Smore w/the different types of coaching cycles I can support them in & I sent out a Google Form to teachers so they could sign up based on their needs/wants. It has been effective & gives teachers flexibility! #ETCoaches
Q5 #ETCoaches LISTEN to their needs and pay attention to the listen to the little things you can do to win trust to beyond the obvious problem. I remember learning that the biggest challenge one teacher was experiencing was using the same "snotty keyboards' as her 2nd graders
A5: right now itās usually based on T request. They contact us with a problem/idea/question and then we start the cycle from there. We are working to develop a more formal approach as our department grows and especially with new teachers. #ETCoaches
A5: I launch a coaching session by asking/restating the T's objective to make sure we are on exactly the same page. This is usually followed by some follow up questions and responses from T's to establish the tone of the meeting as a true back and forth interaction. #ETCoaches
Yeah, the trust required can be a real hurdle sometimes. In our case, it's the time -- I need to do a better job at keeping the conversation going about it, keeping it in the forefront of teachers' minds so they can get in the classrooms. It takes time, time, time! #ETCoaches
A5 Generally coaching is informal, I give highlights of new interests and showcase tools at staff mtgs and during PD days. I also set up afterschool workshops when a number of ppl are interested in learning a new tool or strategy. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C
A5: We launch coaching sessions by advertising ourselves with flyers, emails, etc. We have target start and end dates so it's more tangible for teachers. The best advertisement you can have is word of mouth from teachers who have completed a successful coaching cycle #ETCoaches
A5) Most teachers sign me out via appointment slots on my Google Calendar, however, as I am making my rounds in the building I love to take notes and send emails with ideas on a tool to try with a lesson I heard, or ask if I can come in to help out. #etcoaches
We did a building wide vision for what we want learning to look like at the beginning of the year. From that they each made a goal. It was great because it gave us an in and allowed us to create PLCās based on common goals! #ETCoaches
A5: Sometimes teachers approach me with something they want help with, sometimes I approach them with something I'd like them to do/try. I appreciate that #ChannahonPride teachers trust me enough to do both things! #ETCoaches
Q5: Since I still see classes for half my week, it's tricky. I use https://t.co/qLlF688XRI but they often sign up for me during times when they have students in their rooms. I do some coaching before/after school. #etcoaches
A5: I launch coaching cycles based on teacher needs. Research with questions: What do you want students to know and be able to do? What teaching practice do you want to use/improve? How will we know if they've learned it? LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN #ETCoaches
A5. Most of my coaching sessions are launched by teachers! Ts who want to collaborate and grow and learn new ways to integrate technology at the higher levels of SAMR. Itās awesome! #ETCoaches
A5) I think as a coach we are doing all three and it varies on the teacher we are working with, or comfort level with coaching topic/tool how much of each one is needed. #etcoaches
A6 It really depends on the teacher and the need. I will say co-teaching is my personal favorite. I miss working with the students and this gives me the opportunity to reflect on my own teaching practice. #ETCoaches
Q6 #ETCoaches Can coaching also help individuals see who they are part of collective impact! How does the progress you make count towards some of the bigger goals we have made as an organization?
I don't have my own classroom full of kiddos anymore so when I hear about something cool to try, I need guinea pigs :-) #ChannahonPride teachers always are so generous with sharing their kids and class time with me! #ETCoaches
A6. It depends on the teacher but I would say most of the time Iām supporting. Occasionally I coteach when teaching the kids a new tech tool. #ETCoaches
A6: It depends on the need, but I provide all of those. One of my goals this year has been more co-teaching experiences. An addition to my job description of āSTEM supportā has definitely helped with that! #ETCoaches
A5: We use a booking link (https://t.co/kOl4tfCxmA) that is embedded in our email signatures so Ts can see our availabilities and book us out for co-planning, tech training, or demos. This year is a transition year, and we hope to have more formal coaching next year! #ETCoaches
A6: The coaching looks so different based on the teacher, based on the need and based on the day. Sometimes it is modeling. Other times it is coaching or co-teaching. Other times it is simply being a reflective partner. #ETCoaches
A6 I have done modeling and supporting. I've also hosted a Demonstration day where teachers came in to observe my class in action. We spent time before observation talking about what teachers would see/goals, observed, then debrief afterwards. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C
A6: Probably supporting more than the others, but I love the co-teaching model. I just had a great experience with that today and I think it works great for students to see the partnership. #etcoaches
A6: ALL 3, ALL the time! Coaching requires so much flexibility & you need to meet teachers where they are at! Talking through things in addition 2 modeling, co-teaching, and supporting is what teachers really want! #ETCoaches
A6 I have done modeling and supporting. I've also hosted a Demonstration day where teachers came in to observe my class in action. We spent time before observation talking about what teachers would see/goals, observed, then debrief afterwards. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C
A6: a lot of supporting, encouraging, listening, researching and co teaching! It looks different from T to T but almost all encourage Ts to take a risk and try something new. Oh yeah and reflection!! #etcoaches
A6: Coaching looks like any of those: modeling, co-teaching, and supporting, depending on what the teacher needs from me. I spend time talking with the teacher first to try to get a feel for what will work best. #ETCoaches
A6: Coaching looks different based on the teacher. Somtimes it is modeling a strategy. Others it is co-teaching or side-by-side coaching. I also observe (informal) and provide feedback. It all depends on the desired outcome. #ETCoaches
A1: Erin Miller, high school geometry teacher and currently working on a masters in educational technology leadership. I am only a 2nd year teacher, so my coaches help me every day to improve! #ETCoaches
Two things that always guide this work for me. 1-Keep it a out learning and learners and 2-celebrate what is working before you move to what isnāt. And this quote is a great mindset to think about. #lcinnovation
I'm glad to see informal observation. I love just cruising through hallways and popping in classrooms to see what teachers are teaching and using! I learn so much from them and love to share their ideas! #etcoaches
A7 Reflection is my favorite time. The teacher has the voice to express their feelings. I enjoy the feedback. I also feel like it is just good for your teacher soul! It also helps you prepare for what is next! #ETCoaches
A7: Reflection has served me well thoughout my life & as an educator. Taking time to celebrate & work towards building your capacity really only comes from reflection. You can uncover so many great things through reflection! #ETCoaches
A2: As a first year teacher I received coaching from my curriculum team, my mentor teacher, and from our campus instructional tech coach. Because of their support I felt like I actually did well last year! It was overwhelming at times, but I always knew I had help #ETCoaches
I find this also leads to hallway conversations, which tend to be the best coaching because it provides "in the moment" feedback and support. #ETCoaches
This is a great little video! Everyone can use a coach at some time, and if one doesn't appear when you need him/her, go out and find your own! #ETCoaches
A7: Sometimes it's a simple follow up question, "How do you think it went?" Others it's a formal google form or sit down chat, but asking Ts to reflect is important for their growth as well as progress in coaching. #etcoaches
A7: Before our scheduled time together begins, I always schedule a reflection session so we can talk about glows and grows, and the direction our future sessions should take. This gets the T thinking during our time together, rather than after when craziness hits #ETCoaches
A1: Lacey Glenn, first grade teacher in @ProsperISD@marthamoroch and @Prin_Gilbert are 2 mentors that have given me guidance, advice, and support through my educational career. I respect their wisdom and expertise!!!
#ETCoaches
A3: I think my most effective tool as a classroom teacher is Google Classroom. It makes organizing materials and incorporating more digital activities so much easier. I don't know what I would do without it! #ETCoaches
A7 I often reflect via blogging, but I also get student feedback. Some of their suggestions have been THE best! I altered a unit based on their thoughts - still teaching it the new way 3 years later & it's repeatedly the favorite in Ss feedback. #ETCoaches#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C
A7: reflection is absolutely necessary in education but so difficult to do thoroughly. I have to really be purposeful with my time and whomever Iām working with to ensure we reflect. Ideally it happens directly after but sometimes not until a few days later š„ŗš³#ETCoaches
I like to talk face to face when I can. I just want them to know that I care about the lesson and want to do what is best for them and their students. #ETCoaches (I just wish we had more time!)
A7: When you make reflection a step in the process from the beginning, it becomes natural outside of a coaching session as well. I always find it beneficial to discuss prior to a lesson what we are going to be looking for during and reflecting on after. #ETCoaches
Q7 #ETCoaches Reviewing media clips curated during an event and each picking one image or clip from the event to share with others who were also present was a strategy I learned from @lifelegeros and continue to use
A7: I feel like I do a lot of valuable reflection on my own. However, this is an area I struggle with when it comes to working with Ts. I often feel like when a lesson is done, itās done. Theyāre too busy for a formal reflection. But I know itās important...tough one. #ETCoaches
I do this as well. Love sharing my thoughts and feelings about something new, or something that isn't working, and allowing others to see I am learning and reflecting too. #etcoaches
I like to talk face to face when I can. I just want them to know that I care about the lesson and want to do what is best for them and their students. #ETCoaches (I just wish we had more time!)
A7: Reflection is so hard to do especially when you have 5 minutes before the next class arrives. I always encourage teachers to jot on Post-Its during the lesson when they think of changes, new additions, or success/struggles. This helps them process later. #ETCoaches
A7: Before our scheduled time together begins, I always schedule a reflection session so we can talk about glows and grows, and the direction our future sessions should take. This gets the T thinking during our time together, rather than after when craziness hits #ETCoaches
A7: I always want to make sure I did what the teacher needed of me, & I do plenty of self-reflection, too. Like I said in an earlier Tweet, I am GREAT at learning from my mistakes! All I want to do is make sure I am doing my best work for the Ts & Ss at #ChannahonPride#ETCoaches
A7: Great question. I can't say I have a consistent process. But it goes back to my earlier response of "follow-up." What worked well? And what didn't? Need to know that. #etcoaches
A7: We build in student self-reflection on their academic, social and emotional well-being at the end of each period the student has. Quite valuable information. #etcoaches#EDCI325
A7. I just make it a point to stop and ask, how did it go? What went well? Any changes for next time? Any recommendations for others? Reflecting is always important and it helps encourage Ts for a next time. #ETCoaches
A4: At our school we set our goals pretty early in the school year, and don't talk about them much again. We talked about starting to use #observeme signs outside our rooms but idk if they've been utilized much. I wish we would do more to help each other meet our goals #ETCoaches
A2: As a new teacher I had a first year mentor. She was able to answer questions I had and helped me with what I ādidnāt know I didnāt know.ā
#ETCoaches
I find this also leads to hallway conversations, which tend to be the best coaching because it provides "in the moment" feedback and support. #ETCoaches
