Morning warriors!
We are excited to start our #EduGladiators Earth Day Edition!
But first, roll call!
Who's here?
Share your name & how/where you 'gladiate' 4 Ss!
Positivity is infectious. I am driven do pay forward the success habits that were, and continue to be, passed on to me by the incredible people surrounding me. #Leadupchat#EduGladiators
Are you new to Twitter Chats? It's fun & easy to jump right in & share your thoughts or ask more Qs! Here's how...
Qs drop as Q1...Q2... & you answer A1...A2...
Don't forget to include #EduGladiators hashtag & follow @EduGladiators where ALL of our Qs drop from!
A1: My school district back home in Warren, PA would advertise recycling in general, with posters, banners, and recycling bins in every hall. #EduGladiators
A1: My school, @SolorioHS, has a Zero Waste team formed in partnership with @SevenGensAhead, a sustainability non-profit in Chicago. We have massively reduced our lunchroom waste as a result! Thanks @gretavsgreta for the amazing work! #EduGladiators
A1: Here at the college we have a preschool and they have been earth themed all week. They created a center where they use recycled materials to create things #EduGladiators
A1 On Friday all the kids went out with garbage bags and gloves to clean up the school yard. We have Student Eco Club that is very active on many fronts, including our recycling program and collecting and safely disposing of batteries from the community ๐๐ #EduGladiators
A1 My school does a terrible job of environmental awareness. We are so wasteful. Every time I go to the cafeteria it makes me sad. I am thinking about taking over the StuCo next year and making this a focus. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's ideas. #EduGladiators
A1: Yesterday the Student Council Association and National Junior Beta Club at my school held a campus clean up and beautification project to support Earth Day. #EduGladiators
A1 Our Spirit Club has been working to build simple machines that grind up plastic to be used for creating 3D printing filament. They plan to bring these to our poor beach communities so they can collect plastic & earn $ #edugladiators
My #EarthDay links on My Environment page https://t.co/yOjYtcRRqs We should be teaching everyone to appreciate our world and keep it beautiful. #EduGladiators Picture below from one of the many educational environmental books I wrote.
A1 - As a principal in Boston, our school embraced Earth Day year round; it was part of our culture. Our amazing science teacher really helped build this culture which was embraced by all students/staff. Gardening, composting, recycling were something we did daily. #EduGladiators
My building has teams, & some teams have Earth Day activities, it would be a good idea to coordinate between grade levels so the impact/information is more disseminated #edugladiators
It's a process. They're learning so much from trying to make this work. In the meantime, they won a contest, got some seed money & are moving forward #edugladiators
Fantastic! When I was a student our service clubs regularly picked a Main Street and kept it clean all year and passed out info to recycle to the community! #EduGladiators
A1) In our building we recycle in a number of ways. @sail_industries reuses materials to sell in different venues & @SAILRenewReuse uses furniture finds to create items to donate/sell. Water bottle dog toys & wind chimes to reuse plastic bottles. #EduGladiators
A2 start with asking them how to do it-create PBLs that encourage students to solve these problems-they will amaze you with what they can think of #edugladiators
A1 this year we earned the Pearl School distinction for environmental awareness from the Lynnhaven River Now organization , but want to do more related to plastic reduction #startwithstraws#edugladiators
A2 It's a great opportunity to bring some content-area reading in, about the effects of plastics on the ocean, ways problem-solving is happening, new inventions to help with the issue... Also we need to just ask them to pay attention to how much waste they create. #EduGladiators
A2 Our secondary Ss have been involved in a zero waste challenge. They're seeing the difficulties, but also seeing how they can personally make a difference #edugladiators
A2 - Educate. It's most powerful when kids (people!) come to these decisions on their own. We need to support awareness through exposure to effects/impact of plastics, and students will come up with better initiatives than we ever could! #EduGladiators
A2: We can encourage our students to reduce, reuse, and recycle. When they have plastic bags for lunch, we can suggest that they use reusable Tupperware containers to save on the amount of plastic being thrown away. #EduGladiators
A2 After watching a couple of animated clips about plastic vs water systems My students realized importance of using personal water bottles, recycling plastics used and picking anything you see in the environment #EduGladiators
A2 Model & make it a part of our routine in the classroom. There is so much plastic which means there are many opportunities to model behavior for our Ss #edugladiators
#pbl is a great way to do this, having Ss connect w/community and then learning is more relevant, meaningful, can work together to problem solve. #edugladiators
A2. We have to first set the example by using less plastic ourselves. Then present the idea to the Ss in the form of assignments, contests, PBL. I have found that Ss come up with the most unique ideas themselves. #edugladiators
Love this. Can you share how this developed? Was it an immediate change or did it evolve over time? What was the response from the community? #EduGladiators
A2. Conservation has to be part of your curriculum! Iโm visiting my hometown in Baton Rouge & reminded as a student & teacher of our state wildlife & fisheries provided FREE curriculum to all schools & we are consciously aware of the mark we leave. #EduGladiators
A2: Teaching students about the impact of their choices inspires change. When they know how long it takes for plastic to degrade, they get inspired to make changes. #edugladiators
Yes. I started my teaching career in Baton Rouge in the early 90s. At that time, Exxon was doing a lot for schools - but as I think back, I'm not sure who (if anyone) was vetting the programming/curriculum THEY provided. Awareness is everything. #EduGladiators
A2: Aside from noticing and developing the intrinsic motivators of good Stewardship of our natural resources, effective recycling programs can bring a consistent funding stream for schools. Ours funded student rewards. #edugladiators

A3 Using a #PBL to highlight the problem & have Ss come up w/solutions for the ecosystem you can control is a great way to get Ss thinking & doing conservation #edugladiators
A2) District installed refilling station bubblers (drinking fountains), we have cups & glasses to use. We recycle plastic containers for paint, food storage, crafts & learning projects. #EduGladiators
A2: You have to make conservation cool & relevant for Ss! My schools always sold clear reusable water bottles w/school logo etc on it. Kids could have those in class. Cool to carry it around and refill them plus promoted school branding. Ts had them too! #EduGladiators
A3 starts with taking the time to implement & trust the process- @maxwellbulldogs staff has found @BIEpbl to be indispensable in helping us build student voice & choice while still focusing on students learning the standards they need to #edugladiators
A3 #PBL is a great way to give Ss an opportunity to explore real world issues, problem solve, collaborate and engage in more authentic and purposeful learning #EduGladiators
A3: PBL's are a great way to encourage an environment of respect and rapport. In conjunction with Earth Day, we can give students a "Green" atmosphere essentially, promoting pollution awareness and recycling. #EduGladiators
A3 Read, read, read about the problem and then write, write, write and collaborate on solutions! Ss are brilliant and creative (much more so than adults). The process creates itself! #EduGladiators
A3: We can use PBL to get students to connect with individuals in their local communities and beyond with experience in the field of conservation #edugladiators
A3 Dr. Kia here late! I think that students could look at plastic use around them and create projects to either A. Reuse plastics or B. Repurpose plastics this can even be done with very young children. #edugladiators
A3: PBL's are new to me but I think that they would be great to get the students hands on in the issue. They can learn for themselves and think of solutions on their own #EduGladiators
Our HS has a Zero Waste program in partnership w/ a nonprofit in Chicago, @SevenGensAhead. Our school is entirely free/reduced lunch; they helped us get a program to compost food waste & lunch trays. Kids were trained as leaders, & supervise lunch clean up. #edugladiators

We have been doing this as well, Ss are focusing on the #SDGs#TeachSDGs during their #PBL and learning from other Ss in Spanish speaking countries, really giving unique perspectives #edugladiators

A3 Of course it could also be an opportunity for noticing... let's walk around the campus and notice places where we could be reusing or being more efficient in our use of plastics. Where is waste? #EduGladiators
A4 When we connect school and community, Ss can partner in different events and activities to help in these areas, lead teams, committees, volunteer work #EduGladiators
A3 I have been doing PBLs with my Ss for 10+ years and we have dug into dozens of environmental issues! Increasing awareness and student developed solutions drive change! #edugladiators
A3. By using technology To connect Ss from different regions of the world with different problems. Through tech they could share progress on their PBLs. It would expand their understanding of the problem. #edugladiators
A4 We need to give them the platforms to raise their voices. If they come up with ideas, we should do the legwork to find out where those ideas need to go and how they can really make a change instead of just doing a #PBL activity. #EduGladiators
They started out by reading an article my daughter wrote about the difficulties of her zero waste experiment. They were inspired and wanted to try. https://t.co/aVaWgVIJ63#edugladiators
A3 last year I had 2 Ss really get into our urban tree canopy project. They pitched their idea to our principal and then on to the city arborist and have been able to get the process started to plant trees on our campus #studentdriven#pbl#edugladiators
A4: Using what the PBL created. Sharing the ideas of the studnet with the community and showing that our students care and have great ideas #EduGladiators
This right here๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ Student voice is so powerful as exemplified from yesterdayโs #NationalWalkoutDay This is their world too & having them take active role in conservation & giving hem voice is important! #EduGladiators
A4 We need to give them the platforms to raise their voices. If they come up with ideas, we should do the legwork to find out where those ideas need to go and how they can really make a change instead of just doing a #PBL activity. #EduGladiators
A2 make students aware of the extent of the problem. They need an experience that brings them close to the impact plastic pollution has. One idea might be filling the classroom with bags of plastic waste and explaining how much of that waste is created daily #edugladiators
A4: As teachers, we can create (or become involved in an already existing club) about Earth awareness and recycling. The club gives students ownership of a great cause. #EduGladiators
A4: Sts have become leaders in our Zero Waste efforts. They supervise sorting in our lunchroom (compost, recycle, landfill), &educate other students about the importance of Zero Waste &the impact of landfills on the planet. Whatever you do, bring sts along w/ you! #EduGladiators
A4 allowing them to reach out to experts in the community, helping them connect with real people who can support their solutions, facilitate Skype, Google Hangouts, etc Ss can get real feedback from experts #edugladiators
Happy to. I think the article inspired them because Kenza was honest about her struggles. They'd seen people who only produced a jar of waste in a year & their response was "impossible!" This finally seemed doable to them. #edugladiators
A4) When young adults begin to have a makerโs mindset everything changes. Curbside finds become items of value rather than rubbish. They learn the impact they are making globally & changes their habits of waste-ort, smaller items & plastic. #EduGladiators
Q4. By forming clubs to address conservation. They should try to get sponsorships from related business for resources & partner with them. This would be a win win for both & introduce Ss to possible careers. #edugladiators
Thanks for another great chat! In my current role, conservation hasn't been at the forefront of my thinking. It's been good to revisit strong practices with all of you! #EduGladiators
Great Job @mgrosstaylor you really created the opportunity for me to reflect on how I am helping students understand their role in preserving our earth ๐ #edugladiators
Thank you #EduGladiators for a great Saturday morning chat. I loved hearing all the ideas for Earth Day leadership in students. Have a great Saturday and awesome weekend!
You are welcome! Always helps to divide & conquer. My CDC Ts/Ss really took the lead on this for my bldg by reaching out to community, making sure โป๏ธ bins were plentiful around campus & used, & speaking to classmates about importance of leaving our mark. #EduGladiators
Thank you so much @mgrosstaylor for a #EduGladiators chat so full of ideas & inspiration. We can challenge everyone to change some habits to preserve our planet.
