Q1: What’s a project you’ve done or innovation you’ve introduced into your classroom that helped you make global connections?
As a letterpress-as-hobby printer, I love your first answer! I'd also argue that it's modern...ish!
Excited to be tweeting tonight from where Father Patrick Desbois will speak on action against Genocide
A1 cross-continental social media exchanges w/ my Ss & Ss in other countries (e.g. Gaza, Suriname, Malaysia).
Bringing Palestinian voices into my HS English classroom changed my life and career path. Hard work bc of political pressure.
. I've been at chat with my 13 y-o! So, in a way ;-)
Yes! I did that with my pre-service Ts & it was life changing for them & me!
Hi Ken - don't we love our Twitter? :)
. No, I haven't: do tell!
A1: Whatever social media kids are using now. Love introducing kids to Instagram accounts that connect them with the world.
Innovation can be hard and isolating, depending on where you teach. See this great blog by : https://t.co/5O06jMTfy7
I'm excited to be a 1st timer. To be honest, I like air-conditioning a lot here in Texas.
and I have been utilizing chats in class to discuss content. Today we trended 4th internationally!
depending on situation blogs (edublogs), Skype, & private Facebook pages
Wow! What were you discussing?
I became part of a non-profit for 10 yrs bringing Palestinian voices to the US. Taught poetry in the West Bank too.
A1: Our engagement models are a great way to introduce Ss to global issues in the classroom via film! https://t.co/np89H6SWJm
A1. Introduced Chicago public school teachers to a film which highlights gang youth in Ecuador - pretty powerful dialogue!
. I can teach you a Capitals of South America song, too, if you'd like!
. in this house French feels like Mandarin sometimes!
A1 Skype, google hangout, twitter chats
A1:Project w/Ss to buy one, give one & donated to local Head Start;learned at ed around world too https://t.co/O1xswO9l9T
Instagram is a great resource. Do you, or do they, have a favorite Instagram account for this?
A1) For me, it was doing a bouncing story project with a class in Pakistan. That taught me the power of global collaboration
A1: When utilized effectively social media tools (Twitter and instagram) can generate the strongest connections for Ss & Ts
. that sounds like a good Friday activity!
Joining a few minutes late, but I am glad to be here!
What is a bouncing story project?
great idea! Any recommendations?
Our Ss just finished their state ELA test. We were discussing motivation/learning beyond the test. Ss loved it!
. and are two of my favorite accounts - what are yours?
That's really interesting...Sounds like an amazing experience 4 all. What medium, or technology, did you use?
This is awesome—thank you for sharing!
haha being in Socal we definitely understand that one!
Q2: How do you feel about the culture of innovation in your school?
It's when you write two pages, then other class two more, then you, then they finish. Story goes back and forth.
Thanks for joining us for tonight Bridget!

Thank you Meriwynn! Honored
A2: Building a culture where it is ok to fail is one key to innovation!
A2: Innovation is something a school/teacher should ever feel satisfied in. Always more opportunities experiences to create
A1 Also are great resources to connect globally.
. I like the sounds of this!
A1: w/ my cohort's students across the country & the globe! Ss have loved seeing other Ss responses to ?
Sorry ! Bedtimes got in the way! Sarah - HS T & curr. coordinator from Ann Arbor, MI
. you create beautiful stories!@TaraNuth
A2 It's strong at our univ, but I've been out of K-12 for a few years, so may have to defer on this Q
That sounds so fun! Would be cool to do with a film project - one group films one scene, etc
Ss had a partner in Pakistan class. Wrote 2 pages, then partner did. Then us, then them. Then Skyped & discussed
A2: the culture is there but we are lacking the resources to adequately implement our ideas! Very frustrating
A1 Being Global Fellow has connected me with where I've met/learned about value of a global lens.
A2: A fantastic aspect about my school is any/all innovation for global/community & equity standards are embraced
. Oh & we have to make this happen
A2: My school is an incubator for innovation. I am so blessed! We are a collab. flexible environment & we built the program!
Wow, we had to look that up! Sounds very creative and dynamic. Amazing how much easier that can be now!
Yes, that is a great idea to incorporate.
It's a great film on , you should definitely check it out!
Hello My students are excited to think others are interested in what they are exploring and how.
A2 I wonder why going global seems "innovative." The world's been global for 1000 years! https://t.co/8IDDrFSAtZ
Q2: How do you feel about the culture of innovation in your school?
A2 In some schools, I feel that culture is not clearly respected. Each S is different and is special in their own way.
. Love hearing this! I will always comment on their efforts so be sure to keep me posted.
Yes - it's global PD! We can use ?
That's great! Did you have to advocate for that to happen? Any strategies to share?
Jason dropping in late. Music therapist and teaching artist.
I work w/ many teachers who face schools w/o innovative culture. Success=keep head down don’t rock the boat. Innovation=danger
it definitely is a challenge!
I agree. Parent community can also be utilized to strengthen diversity and school culture.
Thank you again! We love Instagram. Several of our photographers are on there as well with superb feeds.
A2) Lots of cool things happening. Exciting seeing what everyone is doing.
. This escalated quickly! I don't sing - at least not publicly. only
A1b This isn't exactly connecting, but hours of fun for Ss to visualize the world - Drone Guessr https://t.co/qCQOOeHtZR
. That is so good to hear!
Q3: What are some of the challenges you face when it comes to global education and classroom innovation?
. Once I teach then we can all get on Periscope for a performance!
I don't sing either, despite my name!
A3: always time & resources
A2 always willing to try new things and share!
Q3: What are some of the challenges you face when it comes to global education and classroom innovation?
If you model innovative things, I have seen more people willing. Some people just need to see it first or do it together
Thanks for joining us again Jason!
Aha. Who was on the committee? Curious if it involved parents/Ts/Ss, etc
A3: Some Ts are fearful of the unknown. Also requires school leaders who will let Ts take risks & step outside of the bos.
A3: Finding a time but that goes with anything!
A2: I cringe when I hear "don't need to reinvent the wheel." Since Ss change, then Ts need to create & change too
A2) Certain teachers are fantastic. I don't think we parents see innovation everywhere in the school. https://t.co/Y7vXj0qDZr
Q2: How do you feel about the culture of innovation in your school?
. Sadly, this is so true!
A3: Some fear from parents. Ease their worries it is important to highlight the benefits of a globally connected learner
Q3 Thinking about people, other educators that may be interested in similar topic. has been a great resource.
A3: Old schools hold onto history & emphasize tradition over innovation. It’s hard to innovate if colleagues prefer status quo
A3: I'm an English teacher, and eschewing the "canon" is a challenge, not for me, but for internal & external approval
A3: funding to maintain global Ed projects. Lack of understanding on global Ed from admin
Joining a little late tonight. Hi, ya'll. Melissa from .
A3 lack of resources, time, misguided fears by some that it's "anti-American,"Ts being told to focus on high-stakes testing
Absolutely! And having Ts who are comfortable w/ not knowing everything but who are willing to try. https://t.co/lDsLW4mZmB
A2: Building a culture where it is ok to fail is one key to innovation!
A2: I have been fully supported in trying new things! Open minded leaders in who say yes
Agreed—parents often fear global perspectives and need to be drawn into the experience. https://t.co/5krUPmBCF7
A3: Some fear from parents. Ease their worries it is important to highlight the benefits of a globally connected learner
A3 It's a challenge sometimes to motivate Ss. We need more passion and resources to make educ engaging and worthy
A3: Finding ways to make resources available free of cost! Excited to provide free films to Ts in LA: https://t.co/bfNNfoU8LG
. Hmm-you don't or you *haven't*? hasn't done much of that, either.
Unfortunately, this is true of our culture - generally speaking.
A3) For some, it's not wanting to rock the boat. You have to do what's right for kids. Can't do what's comfortable for us.
If innovations appear to take students away from the core standards… god help you.
. I can't wait to see/hear this. Or do I want to....?
Yes, some Ss were involved. We now have Ss involvement in partnerships in Haiti, Chile, S Korea, & Australia
Agree! Especially with so much emphasis on testing. It is hard to find a happy medium!
And I love that having a strong Twitter can lead us all to so many such connections! https://t.co/HMWaDP4jfY
Q3 Thinking about people, other educators that may be interested in similar topic. has been a great resource.
hardest challenge is getting beyond prescriptive scope and sequence to see integration https://t.co/B7tdjzRP1W
Q3: What are some of the challenges you face when it comes to global education and classroom innovation?
We're intrigued - what's on your reading list now?
So sad when we hear this. skills are essential no matter your nationality
A3:Willingness to take risks by being creative. I see this w/ pre-service Ts who are products of NCLB & MTs faced w/tests
True...Innovation demands some freedom!
Absolutely—innovation and standards are not mutually exclusive!
A3: also a challenge to make sure global Ed isn't a one time lesson. Keep it going in the classroom/curriculum
Absolutely, Jennifer!! https://t.co/Ve9GCwN0VX
I work w/ many teachers who face schools w/o innovative culture. Success=keep head down don’t rock the boat. Innovation=danger
. Seriously, it would scare people!
A3: Odd, as most parents work is so thoroughly global now https://t.co/ATd2sl8WkG
Agreed—parents often fear global perspectives and need to be drawn into the experience. https://t.co/5krUPmBCF7
A3: Some fear from parents. Ease their worries it is important to highlight the benefits of a globally connected learner
A3: One challenge is middle school scheduling. I want my students for more than 42 minutes when working on big things!
Q4: Which strategies for fostering change and innovation have been most successful?
We are working on relationships w/other schools & start w/thinking through the long-term1st.
thanks! I like what I'm reading thus far. Trying to catch up.
This is so important . Global Ed should be infused in all learning perspectives https://t.co/E4eA9Vrs4I
A3: also a challenge to make sure global Ed isn't a one time lesson. Keep it going in the classroom/curriculum
Fabiana from Buenos Aires, the city that never sleeps... Sorry having dinner
. Twitter has been a great for me for sure!
Very true. That’s an ideal entry point for involving parents in in classrooms.
wow can't wait to check that out later! thanks for the share
A4: flex scheduling, collaborative learning spaces, interdisciplinary credit & giving Ss chance to design their own learning
Scheduling is such a big challenge - but with the movement toward PBL, I hope it can change!
If it wasn't for Twitter, I would be afraid 2 be a T. Here, I feel welcome like I have another family https://t.co/TcazRHdigs
And I love that having a strong Twitter can lead us all to so many such connections! https://t.co/HMWaDP4jfY
Q3 Thinking about people, other educators that may be interested in similar topic. has been a great resource.
Q4: Which strategies for fostering change and innovation have been most successful?
A4: starting in the classroom w Ss. Get them excited & it seems to be contagious.
They won't have their jobs for long Curriculum delivery is minimal professional competence today. https://t.co/PtVJtd87Ek
Absolutely, Jennifer!! https://t.co/Ve9GCwN0VX
I work w/ many teachers who face schools w/o innovative culture. Success=keep head down don’t rock the boat. Innovation=danger
The "accompaniment model" lets us walk with one another, instead of "helping" and "doing for" https://t.co/ElnFiAGR6Z
A3: I find some teachers are nervous about stepping out of the box, and being learners w their Ss.
A4: Learner PD for adults & connecting to what resonates about global for them not just the school.
A4: Make local connections. Don't make it "us" and "them" Make it just us https://t.co/GZIZoX4gaW
Q4: Which strategies for fostering change and innovation have been most successful?
A4) For me, it was taking on more kids. If it meant two classes for the other teacher to learn, the end result was worth it.
Building relationships & trust. Transparency & explaining "why" behind decisions, etc. Allowing 4 Ts voice 2.
A4: Providing your learners with a voice and choice is when you see their innovation emerge & flourish!
. solely on Wed. afternoon or Friday morning & something you try to "fit in" = ineffective.
My school is SO big and the scheduling is SO complex that we're going to need major restructuring
. Seamless integration is key, isn't it?
A5: Giving time during PD sessions for Ts to work & collaborate, & classroom visits to talk curriculum & co-teach if possible
A4: Involving parents & students can help legitimize the work. That & clear attainment of standards via innovative strategies.
absolutely! But difficult at times in mandated curriculum. (Ex: AP)
A4 Ss collaborating w/ other cultures'. Great humanizing effect. Inquiry lessons requiring exploring diverse perspectives
A4: collaboration & communication with colleagues in building and out
. This is the best reason for doing - to have Ss realize this.
Wow! You win the Most Dedicated Award for the night!
. Agreed! It is difficult for Ts to be okay with not knowing all of the answers. I say for all!
A4: When Ss get engaged w/ the films, they forget they're learning! They get inspired and that sparks a change in attitude
Please learn more about Father Patrick DesBois' work uncovering Holocaust and fighting Genocide https://t.co/T72KPs3kL1
Ugh, we have NONE of these. long way to go.
Excellent approach—mentoring colleagues through their first innovations is a great solution. https://t.co/S0GA9nZcpu
A4) For me, it was taking on more kids. If it meant two classes for the other teacher to learn, the end result was worth it.
Others have done it...it can happen (with the will that is!).
A4. Great listening skills.
A4 1 big thing is letting Ss have a voice. They become more successful and feel comfortable to approach their learning.
Wish I could stay longer, but time for me to play uber driver & take my daughter to soccer practice. Thanks !
That's amazing!! Great to see Ss collaborating globally to improve their own edu!
A4 Sharing positive experiences, inviting others into our classrooms!
Redid master schedule for 10th time. Ts w/ideas so we changed our Wednesday to meet their needs
Looks like a great , everyone! Looking in now while my 7yo daughter reads in bed.
Agreed! My Ss called me out if I dared to approach a lesson without global connections. Glad they did! https://t.co/ofv9DetDL1
A4: starting in the classroom w Ss. Get them excited & it seems to be contagious.
A4: Showcasing good projects is part of it, but you have to be sure it doesn’t lead to a sense of favoritism among colleagues!
. Became 2nd nature once we wrapped our heads around tying global content to our mandatory standards.
what do they fear exactly? How do you know they fear it?
Q5: Who are your “allies,” and what support do they provide to ensure your global innovations are successful?
Q5: Who are your “allies,” and what support do they provide to ensure your global innovations are successful?
We are trending - just above Kobe :)
Yes! Also training Ss to move from coBLABoration to colLABoration.
. & the rest of the crew, I'm signing off... homework happening & undivided attention needed! Thanks, all.
I agree! Wish others saw it this way! Love when Ss make it global before I do!
A5: Having partners outside your org who believe in and support what you are doing is important.
if it's not explicitly about America it's anti-American? Oy.
A4: When your learners want to share their work with the world sure sign of innovation happening! https://t.co/NsYWZFnnnI
A4: A lot of modeling from the Ts who get it & who can see the global + standards connection. Celebrating baby steps.
A5) My superintendent was mine. Always supported everything & participated in a lot with my students to learn more himself
Without a doubt! https://t.co/M5CKFMQu94
A5: Having partners outside your org who believe in and support what you are doing is important.
A5: educators on Twitter have been the best; most helpful, most supportive; most in tune/w where to go
A5: I think the trick is to turn opponents into allies by involving them when you can—parents, admin, skeptical stakeholders.
absolutely! We encourage Ss to design their own action campaigns in response to watching
. Me, too! They are so keen for !
A5: ,
, , have been HUGE supporters w/
Can be challenge when people think trad schools can't. Many elements could if district leaders allow risk
A5: I found a fantastic partnership with to hold global exchanges
Support is a beautiful and sustaining kind of leadership
I love this SO MUCH—no point in coBLABoration, focus on colLABoration! Get to the real heart/point! https://t.co/uyqVxAsWQP
Yes! Also training Ss to move from coBLABoration to colLABoration.
A5: Discovering this chat and adding participants in it to my PLN has been galvanizing!
A5 As a current S I have found my Twitter allies the most successful bc I always learn something new. Gives me ideas 4 future
A5: students! Biggest allies!!
I love - they are doing great work! I enjoyed your blog today too.
A5:Our amazing partners! Thx for the inspo + support
A5: our local clubs, cooperative school partners & Twitter pals!
A5. Love having authentic conversations with others that challenges my way of thinking.
A5: students also fall into this; I want them to succeed & they want me to do well also- we help each other to do best
A5: There are many great organizations as allies, but building internal allies is also key. Have to have support from inside.
A brave strategy!! How do you win them over?
Thank you so much! This year has been transformative for my students and me
A5 Having true educators that are passionate and have goals to accomplish for Ss success. Ppl like that are worth seeking
. Having leaders that encourage risk-taking is key!
Yes! His involvement would cause a lot of others to want to get on board too. Success & support are contagious
A5:Global Competence rubrics provided by , & IA Ts working on are great partners
. Even sometimes our very own teaching colleagues!
When doing the Palestine work I tried to invite them to everything--stressful! Need to see in action to get it.
A5: Your PLN can provide you with the best classrooms connections and provide you with the strongest support.
Q6: What resources do you have (or need) to help turn opponents into allies and foster a culture of global innovation?
Q6: What resources do you have (or need) to help turn opponents into allies and foster a culture of global innovation?
A5: Any connections that push you out of your comfort zone to try new things and support you! A sounding board!
I have won folks over by working w/ their Ss and/or developing units of study and modeling. ☺️
A5: My support comes from , my PLN, nothing local...
Agree! It has to always be about the students. Set them on the path to accomplish great things
Thank you for providing the opportunity for my Ss to make global connections! My Ss loved it!
Definitely. We love when Ss come home after watching a film and are excited to pitch to their parents
A5: The & leaders I work w/ daily, my Twitter & the colleagues I've had since '99!
It really can shift the whole culture of a school, the kind of culture that nourishes the students as well.
A6: I think parents who work globally (which doesn't mean they travel) are our best allies for https://t.co/OOipQlVzj4
Q6: What resources do you have (or need) to help turn opponents into allies and foster a culture of global innovation?
A6: that's a great question; prob could use strategies for how best to work with Ss & Ts who don't see the value as I do
. Absolutely, the link goes directly to the slideshare presentation with more slides & facts.
A6) Using to find collaborations, then modeling those for others to see how amazing they are. You gain so much
A6: More local partners to partner with and move from PLN to PLTeams working w/global teams.
Looks like another amazing . Catching up mow as I just finished teaching ...
A6: Best resource I have is an open ear, school practices to share & open-mindedness to grow!
A6: If you have a skeptic, bring them in to share their view (i.e. globalization=end of America). Value all perspectives.
For the global collab before or after school, would invite parents. They were just as excited and they saw the benefit for Ss
Q5 Of course all my new friends . I'm also digging and here in Austin
A6: Whatever you do, keep good records of the allies you meet and how you can work with them a second time!
. Authentic learning from - love it!
Agree 100% No support/recognition https://t.co/zHFdbekrvW
A5: The & leaders I work w/ daily, my Twitter & the colleagues I've had since '99!
Was making local connections tonight. Mike, librarian from MD ...
A6: Helping skeptics see issues locally also helps—not just exploring poverty in Africa but in Boston, Dallas, etc.
Globalization isn't end of America, it's what made America great in the 20th century! History matters https://t.co/GeUUYRXtAI
A6: If you have a skeptic, bring them in to share their view (i.e. globalization=end of America). Value all perspectives.
I'll beat my dead horse, ask your librarian. Many of us have time to explore new things.
A6: Tech Resource: is a wonderful video conferencing tool- very few connection issues compared to GHOs.
I had parents as allies and it made all the difference!! Pushed me out of my comfort zone
So important as this poverty probably has globalization as a root cause! https://t.co/ekPkAcvRMk
A6: Helping skeptics see issues locally also helps—not just exploring poverty in Africa but in Boston, Dallas, etc.
A6 Emphasize more how crucial PLNs are towards a successful career. Without it, teaching & learning would be boring
Tell specifically how they made that difference!
A6: My "resources" are my Ss and their "final product": love, knowledge, success...
Rock, rock rock your boat, swiftly flows the stream ...
A6: today Dept chr talked re:1st time he heard students communicate round globe chr mtg- I said 'um, EdCamp Global'
I always find earning goes way beyond the initial plan of a global collaboration. That's the beauty of it.
Broke out my world map with my 4th graders today. They loved it.
Q7: What is the most transformative thing about classroom innovations for your students?
A6 I think a little success goes a long way. Once you fee the power of a well executed global lesson you're hooked!
Q7: What is the most transformative thing about classroom innovations for your students?
. So true! - as important to explore local issues as it is to learn about those .
I saw a stat that library visits are way down this year - people forget about the great resources they contain!
A7: that focuses on fostering innovation is more hands-on, engaging and relevant - not so passive!
This might make an excellent opportunity for a compare/contrast infographic ...
. There is a local investigations guidebook you can download if you are interested. Let me know!
Check out - Fort Union Historic Trading Post. The original Walmart during the Fur Trade Era
A7) Students seeing a different perspective or learning an initial stereotype they had is not correct
. This stat makes me sad. :(
Funny story - I thought PLN was "personal learning" NO, sorry...stuck w/professional in a group! https://t.co/1fragmoNkC
A6 Emphasize more how crucial PLNs are towards a successful career. Without it, teaching & learning would be boring
Yes! Libraries hold so many resources, not only many wonderful books but so much more. https://t.co/OnBaRDn8Ox
I saw a stat that library visits are way down this year - people forget about the great resources they contain!
Innovation comes down to voice and choice—for kids and teachers. Sit and get education doesn’t foster creative leaders or Ts.
Me too! There are so many great tech resources in libraries now - but people don't think of that.
Do they forget or do they use our digital resources? Not sure-yes, these stats make me sad too.
A7: From a student: “This has shown me what real responsibility is. I think that I have grown..."
Often the best classroom innovations elicit out-of-the-classroom innovations! Some inspiration: https://t.co/VJLAFJ0rL9
A7. Students can take ownership of their work and innovations.
a7: is an excellent example of transformative classroom innovations
Came at 9:00 pm for Skype with Pakistan. Learned they aren't bad people as they thought and Ss are eager to learn like them
A7 contd: "...and I have learned a lot about serious topics and problems that people have to face every day around the world.”
. Everything is at our fingertips these days w/ our devices, so they probably just don't make the trip.
A7: my at-risk Ss care & are invested in problems that are bigger than their own and some of them have awful issues themselves
A7: Paradigm shift https://t.co/vy5AHDwtBm
Q7: What is the most transformative thing about classroom innovations for your students?
A7: ability 2 see perfection is not normal. I show I'm a learner as well & we all benefit from sharing of ideas & interaction
The best!! When you can just see that they're walking out of the classroom with a new worldview
Not everyone has one of those devices though.....
Thank you for joining tonight! Be sure to grow your and follow everyone who participated.
Precisely and kids still want to read print. Research supports this too.
Yes! Challenging misconceptions!
Any last thoughts on innovation in classrooms?
This might mean that it's a PPLN (Yes, you may laugh...)
Definitely! Changed everyone's attitude of the Pakistani culture. Coming late in evening, well worth it!
I’m excited to see so many innovative Ts trying to do right by kids. Don’t let the turkeys get you down!
. Thanks for a fabulous !
I have that one, continents, and a Mid Atlantic one too.
