A1: was planning to major in sport management. Had an SM intro class where we observed a PE lesson and I thoght “well that seems like the best time ever” #espechat
A1 Because there had to be something more than sticking an umbrella to the ground, throwing on Raybans, rolling out a supermarket cart with equipment and telling everyone to to play 1/2 #espechat
I came from a miserable PE experience. I was the kid that got picked last and was never good at any sports. I always knew I would teach and NEVER have my students exp what I went through #espechat
A1 I saw some of my closest friends camouflage into the background and only wished I could help them love movement even half as much as I did 2/2 #espechat
Q2: When you look back on you career, what is one thing you are proud of? If you are just beginning a career, what is one thing you hope for? #espechat
A2) I'm proud of where I've come since starting. I didn't always walk the walk but I am proud of where I have ended up, around some amazing #physed#espechat professionals doing good!
A2: Getting Nationally Board Certified 13 years ago was very challenging and one of my proudest accomplishments- it changed everything about my teaching and my view of our profession #espechat
A2 I hope to be a part of one school system long enough to make a big difference and positive impact that is sustainable on the community as a whole. #espechat
A1: Inspiration from the most wonderful teacher a student could ever have @pholli17. She loved every single one of us and we loved her. What a legacy as a teacher and as a principal! #espechat
A2. Wow great ?'s. As I look back on my career I am so proud that I continue to grow, learn, and get better as a teacher. The motivation to learn still drives me and benefits the kids #espechat
Q2 since this is the start to be able to influence my ss on being better people who love the outdoors and sports as much as I did as well as be comfortable with themselves and try new things #Espechat
Late to the #espechat
Paige Bowen 21 years of teaching. A1) my dad is a PE teacher and coach. Even coached me and my brother in HS. I just felt it in my bones. PE is where I belonged.
A2) I hope it will be that I have inspired students to choose to be active on their own time and accord. Also on more of a PLN level, inspire fellow PE Ts to pursue best practices #espechat
A2 as a future physical educator I hope to impact my students and the community and be known as the teacher that will always take the extra step for their students #espechat
A2 I’m proud of my 1st program that I built while at my K-6 program because that was a product of me stepping off my island and connecting with the online #physed community! I’m still working on my moment at the ms level! #espechat
A2) looking back on my career I am especially proud of myself classroom management. I struggled mightily as a new teacher, but am proud of how much I’ve learned in that area. #espechat
A3: Teacher Burnout: Boredom, Frustration (with the same things that have happened since day 1 like classroom teachers late to pick up students lol), Physical and Emotional Fatigue #espechat
A3 Anyonr could possibly start with a different symptom but one that I see quite often is the constant flow of negativity. The blame is frequently placed on ss as opposed to looking at one’s own practice first #espechat
A3. A3. Not my job mentality, an emphasis on self vs student, poor classroom management, not seeking out Professional Development opportunities #espechat
A4) Its amazing what working out before school will do to your psyche to prepare ourselves for our long school days. It is a form of therapy and an investment in yourself #Espechat
A4) the group at @PHYSEDagogy did a great job showing different ways to help burnout. Sometimes I do take off quickly after school to spend time with family and/or get some exercise. Making sure you rest is also important. #espechat
A4. We all should know that exercise is the best way to decrease stress. Join the activities with you Ss allow yourself to have fun with your classes, laugh #espechat
A4 keep up with personal stress management techniques (exercise, etc). Remind yourself it’s okay to turn down certain tasks when overwhelmed. #espechat
A3: I’ve noticed that most burned out (or nearing burning out) teachers almost never talk about the kids. When you lose the reason we do this, it’s tough to be even a small bit effective. Sorry for jumping in late. #espechat
Positive reinforcement goes a long way. I couldn’t believe it when I praised a student for following a procedure in the gym. Many of the others just followed with out my having to say anything. #espechat
A4- Managing Stress- 1. Working out, 2. Talking with others facing the same stressors, 3. Rewarding Self with things I really like to do (or eat) #espechat
A4) Its amazing what working out before school will do to your psyche to prepare ourselves for our long school days. It is a form of therapy and an investment in yourself #Espechat
Q4b) I don't connect my mobile device to my work email. It helps me to unplug from work and not checking every 5 minutes. I sometimes check but its a bigger effort to try. #espechat
A2) I'm proud of the responsibility and independence I've seen in my students as well as their increased physical literacy. To be able to stand back & watch my APE classes come in, start their warm-ups w/o prompting & perform fitness skills with accuracy is top notch #espechat
A4) the group at @PHYSEDagogy did a great job showing different ways to help burnout. Sometimes I do take off quickly after school to spend time with family and/or get some exercise. Making sure you rest is also important. #espechat
A4b) no. I’m always connected. It’s not a good thing. I just am at a point professionally that I love. I am always interested in what people are doing. #Espechat
Q4b: I do not check school email once I leave school for the day. I unplug by swimming or doing fitness that is tech free. At least and hour of exercise a day for me. #espechat
A4) #espechat you just have to make yourself leave “on time”, don’t spend too many weekends at work. I try to remember to put my family first. Also collaborating with colleagues is important. In PE sometimes you feel like you’re in a island. Make an effort to connect to others.
A4b. I didnt check it over winter break at all. Never weekends. I check it once before supper, just to see. Then again about an hour before school. There's usually nothing there. #espechat
A4b I don’t think I’ve completely unplugged but definitely minimized for just under 3 weeks. Magnificent I say 👌🏼, can’t imagine how great it would be to fully unplug #espechat
Great point Matt. Its funny how admin always ask more of the people that consistently go "above and beyond." Without "no", teachers that do go above and beyond will get taken advantage of more times than not #espechat
A3) I think "walking the walk" is an important reminder and warning sign in the early stages of burnout. If we can't keep up the lifestyle, we need to assess what is preventing/distracting us from doing so & try to remove/reduce those stressors. #espechat
I had to say no to a couple of things this year. I'm pretty sure they are upset but they understood because I told them the time I would have will allow me to "x, y, z." #espechat
A5: I look for the small joyful moments in class. If a S finally can jump rope for the first time. Ss learning to skip. A S working with a group w/o melting down. #espechat
A5) Connecting with great colleagues in person (happy hours, conferences, PD series, etc.) or through social media. Can vent the issues and help find solutions for yourself #espechat
Mine was falling into bad habits as a teacher and not teaching. I was babysitting constantly. It was boring. I hated it. When challenged to start teaching, I had a whole new change in my outlook. #espechat
A5: I smile when I see my Ss grow and learn each day. It always makes me happy to see them work hard and accomplish the goals I have for them. And when they surprise themselves. #espechat
A3) When I look back at my career I will always be proud of being nominated a state award. Even though I didn’t win, it changed my mindset and provided motivation to get better. #espechat
A5: Try to not take myself to seriously. I have one very challenging group (50 kids) that come in twice a week and I started playing loony tunes and circus songs when they walk in to keep myself entertained #espechat
A5: Buy a BIG BIG storage container. Save all the student/parent notes you receive over your entire career. Take one out and read when you need a smile. #espechat
A3: I see burnout as a stagnant curriculum, recycling the same lessons, not preparing for each grade level. Throwing together lessons 10 minutes before class. Resisting change. #espechat
A4) Knowing how much is too much and learning to say no is #1. Understanding what you do well & what style(s) work for you. Not trying to emulate someone else's style or magic. Twitter PLN can be great, but can also create a "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality #espechat
Not winning doesn't make you less of a teacher. Maybe it just meant... NOT YET for the award. Keep pushing and keep doing what you do. I'm a bit amazed at where I ended up. #espechat
A5 The moments that unwrap right before my eyes and I see my ms ss evolve into kids. Kids just smiling, moving without a care in the world! The true essence of play comes out #espechat
A4: I deal with stress by writing, and by talking to my colleagues and wife. I used to bottle up stress but am now much better at talking through it. Instead of putting it on the back burner, I'm now more comfortable tackling the stressor. #espechat
A5) celebrate the wins and laugh at the losses. I come up with some really incredible ideas...that are actually really awful. Gotta have a good sense of humor about it. (However, DJ Holland for fitness days is still the most fun idea I've had.) #espechat
A6) Diversify your network. You can draw some great creativity from teachers with different backgrounds/skill sets. It also ensures that you become a part of the school culture instead of being on an island in the gym. #espechat
I need to print more next time. Thought about making a whole page with just the tear off part so that I could get more handed out at one time. #espechat
A5:Find like minded professionals with your passion for PE. Use Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Youtube as well as go to conferences to connect, learn grow and share! #espechat
Why is the term “physical education,” problematic in that it often leads to misunderstanding and confusion when we try to come to some common definition? #espechat
A6 Take care of yourself, find your balance. Something I’ve found to be super duper important is surrounding myself with like minded individuals who lift me up! As @cultofpedagogy would say— find those marigolds! #espechat
A6. Don't let the job overwhelm you, choose one area in your practices and work to excel at it. Don't try too much at once...learn and observe until you create your own path #espechat
Yes, this is what the @NBPTS process was all about. I hated watching myself but I learned more than anything during that time. Being able to look in the mirror benefits the Ss. Sadly, not all will reflect on what they are doing. #espechat

A6: Advice- 1. Get involved at your school, 2. Get involved with a group outside your school 3. Always further your education (if possible) 4. Trust your instincts 5. Be adventurous and 6. Take chances! #espechat

A6. Do NOT get upset when the kids don’t “listen”. They are still learning to listen. They are still learning everything. Be kind as much as you can. It is hard but it makes a difference. #espechat
A6 allow yourself to just be...and try not to do EVERYTHING! At least not all at once! (Still guilty of that many days)😬 having a fab Para keeps me straight #espechat
A6 it is ok to not have everything perfect right now because you are still learning too. I am reminded of that every day on twitter as I see seasoned vets continue to grow and create content. #espechat
