Royanne Baer from Ridgeview

A1 It’s all professional….. My niece has got me into …not me but watching her
Q1 Facebook/Instagram/Twitter
A1: Facebook and Instagram mostly at home!
A1: Facebook, instagram, twitter
A1: In the process of getting established on
A1 Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat...just about everything!....well except MySpace.....
A1 My hubby introduced me to and
How am I a music teacher and have never heard of ??
Q1 Facebook I read and post/Instagram and Twitter just read
excited to learn! Twitter and Instagram
It’s fun. All the kids use it. Check it out. Not sure abt school
Kathleen from Hillside joining a little late.
Ok what is ? What does it do?
RIP MySpace. Poor Tom lost all his friends!
Also a facebook junkie! instagram when it comes to pics of my kids for sure.
LinkedIn as well-have gotten some freelance art gigs as well as connected professionally using it
Ok, here comes Q2: what social media sites/ apps do you use in your classroom (school use)?
kids sing and dance with a selected song in the background during a “selfie” all the kids have it!
Twitter cancelled Vine today
is a social video sharing for private groups of friends, family, or anyone you choose
Completely forgot about Linkedin
Q2: Twitter, but I would really like to try Facebook because I think it would have bigger exposure
A2: My parents know about my twitter account, but in K, i really don't do much social media with the class.
I have almost signed on to the paid version of LinkedIn several times-it is pretty effective
A2 just Twitter at the moment at my school
A2: LOVE seesaw, we use chaterpix, piccollage, I use twitter...
Q2 -- I use for classroom brags and showcases. Want to know about others, hopefully will tonight.
Patrice Givens@patricegivens72 AA at Randolph ES.....ready!!
A2 I use twitter quite regularly
SeeSaw is great-their customer service is very personal-needed more space on it and they were very helpful
A1: Instagram is my fav, snapchat, facebook, Twitter
A2 really just Twitter by the school...can't say what individual classes are using.
Twitter is great to share quick pics with parents
A3: I said apps I love, guess I meant to say social media... but I only use twitter for my classroom use, not the Students
A2: I'm classroomless but were my go to's
our school is in the midst of a great Seesaw vs. Class Dojo Class Story debate. I'm solidly
A2: I have a school Instagram account that I use to connect with my students and keep in touch with past students
Class Dojo Class Story -- tell me more?
Hey everyone, remember to answer with A1, A2, etc! And of course our hashtag!
A2: I use both Instagram and twitter regularly.
https://t.co/w5qZfJTEQ0
our school is in the midst of a great Seesaw vs. Class Dojo Class Story debate. I'm solidly
A2: I used to use twitter for kids to tweet as historical figures could also do the same with Instagram and Snapchat
Seesaw is quickly gaining popularity at Abbotts Hill!
yes I have class dojo and seesaw. I don't use class story bc I have seesaw and twitter. Too many options!
A2 In a HS were smartphones abound the versatility of and were exactly what I needed
A2: also for those that don't know if you take a pic of a qr code in snapchat it also works as qr reader
A2: I also obviously use twitter to ed tech
A2 In a HS classroom wsere smartphones abound the versatility of and were exactly what I needed
Q3: do your students participate in the use of classroom social media? if so, how (from personal devices, home??)
A1: personal and professional
A2 we have twitter Tuesdays at my school.
I think there are uses for both dojo and seesaw. Dojo for parent communication and or seesaw for assignments
A2: Our school uses Twitter. My class uses Edmodo.
A3: Pre-1:1 if my Ss use it on their phone it didn't get my stamp of approval
A3 Not currently. In a past school Ts had Ss tweet out from their classroom devices to share learning.
have you seen the student story feature in dojo?
A3 Haven't let kids use social media due to age restrictions (though we know they all have personal accts.)
A3: Had kids actually use twitter for projects but there are great ways to fake all of them. could be one!
A3 They don't use it per se in Elem but they always ask if I'm going to tweet their picture or project.
A3: kinder is hard to include them but I do show them where I add to twitter. Especially during the global read aloud each year!
A3: Pre-1:1 if my Ss couldn't use it on their phone it didn't get my stamp of approval
A2: I said Twitter for personal but it's actually a prof acct, but I ❤️ to nerd out & I get my personal education PD on it!
yep. I think seesaw takes a little more on the digital front though if I am not mistaken
A3: ClassDojo and Edmodo have been two constantly used
A3: not really in class/for school because of age restrictions
does a great job with integration of Social media into her classroom!
https://t.co/irpS8lL1bG
Q3: do your students participate in the use of classroom social media? if so, how (from personal devices, home??)
is a video discussion app that helps keep dialogue alive beyond the bell SUPER EASY to use! https://t.co/vfvq2AB1XQ
A3: Not yet--I use it primarily to share with parents/community what is happening in the media center
A3 I tried to use to show parents what their students are learning.
As an incentive, I used to instagram my kids that made As on tests and quizzes. They loved it.
my class saw their picture that I Tweeted to Discov Ed when we participated in Dot Day. They were pumped
I seriously learn so much! 🤓
A3 I do use and Ss use that to communicate. Past years Ss have used it like FB.
Your responses are amazing! Q4: How can we safely use social media to involve our communities (parents, stakeholders...etc)
Not too much no. Though working on getting classes using Seesaw (Which I consider the educational instagram)
Tammie from Shakerag. Big fan of
A2 mainly twitter. I have a school acct and a personal acct.
A4: There are many social media apps that can have restricted access so that only stakeholders can access feeds
A4: make sure Ss have publicity releases, communicate at the beg. of year that you use it to inform parents, etc.
A4 this is a great question. How do you keep it safe?
A4: I think Twitter is a good way, but I don't really have any parents that follow me. This is a good question. I think I'll 👀
A4 have someone that actively monitors acct whether individual /school to keep it professional and tasteful and relevant
That's how I get teachers to understand it to start out then I drop all the greatness on them!
A4: Make sure we have publicity releases. Be sure not to have anything shared that shows student names.
A4: I do like how has where you can approve before it goes to a child's journal.
A4 I think they are great in the classroom but do to so many legal barriers it makes it difficult
A4: I think this is the worry that i hear from parents in the community as well. love dojo and others that require passwords.
A3: and when my kids made videos for projects with green screen technology , I posted those too. https://t.co/GD333DN5jI
I have many colleagues using is a big fan! Do any other METI's out there use it?
A4 though twitter is a fantastic connection tool for kids...I mean look at us as we connect
Love thinking of as an educational instagram!!! Great thought https://t.co/qF15ZeTAJf
Not too much no. Though working on getting classes using Seesaw (Which I consider the educational instagram)
A4: I keep all accts separate with different names. My personal ones do NOT use my real name. I always get releases also.
not to many I know of...hoping to get on it! I'm looking at you Heidi.... haha
A4: if I don't get releases from EVERY student, I don't post ANYTHING!
Q5: How can our STUDENTS safely use social media to involve our communities? (parents, stakeholders...etc)
such a great way to think about
https://t.co/phpOJ95zaH
Not too much no. Though working on getting classes using Seesaw (Which I consider the educational instagram)
seoarate accounts for personal and professional use-makes it easier to keep track
when teachers dont understand why everyone can see everything I tell them that because it makes it familiarish
Avoid drinking from the "fire hose" at GAETC. Take a sip at a time!
plan to get parents set up to follow school acct on Twitter this year
A4: We include stakeholders with Twitter feeds on our homepage. Definitely helps us to show off! 😀
II absolutely agree ! Separate accts a must for personal and professional.
A5: model good "online behavior" and lay out rules for acceptable/not. Make it only available after you 'approve'
A5: lessons have been great convo starters, but Ss need opps to use social media to join the convo
A5: work with them to understand how social media works and how to stay safe--digital citizenship
It depends. I have one account and use it for both. Twitter is public anyway.
A5 this is where the digital citizenship lessons come into play...knowing internet safety
A5: Social media via our students is a tough one for elementary. Social media for school communications is a definite.
A5: Not real comfortable w/Ss using social media for school but would like to see some Parents participate.
A5this is where things get tough for elementary, lots of sites have age requirements
you really rock at doing this...if i do say so myself!! https://t.co/7mwFM0XWgJ
A5: work with them to understand how social media works and how to stay safe--digital citizenship
A5: Include parents in the process with sessions on social media for them and how to help guide their children to stay safe
A5 We tell our football players all the time to be careful what they are putting out there..always teaching digital citizenship
A5 Just as we teach Ss how to behave in class, we have to teach them how to behave on the Internet.
By the way, great GAETC video! Excellent advice for the first timers.
A5: The first week of kindergarten computer lab (we go everyday) is mostly what is the internet and how do we stay safe
A5: Can we teach our Ss not to be trolls?
Time flies when you're having fun! Q6: how do you monitor student use on social media sites. share your best practices
only if we can teach adults not to be trolls.....
A6 one important way...model good digital citizenship ourselves
A6 It depends. For school assignments us? Some of this is parenting and we host parent WS to help them learn the latest in SM.
A6 - I use Edmodo. Closed system that allows me control on student communication.
A6: I keep open relationships w/ my Ss. I insist we follow each other & I talk with them frankly about inappropriate things.
my own kids can't have any social media unless I am one of their "friends" so I can see what's getting posted
A6: if I witness it, I feel it's free game to discuss.
A6: I like how sites like let you set up alerts when something has been posted to make it easier to monitor
For sure!I think I might even require knowledge of passwords. Can never B too careful. Not just them but friends.
A6 it's a whole team effort...it doesnt matter (to an extent) what we say about it if it's not backed up at home
Totally agree about PD and Twitter! Found some favs with lots of cool stuff!
my mom was the exact same way
A6 Parental education is essential! We can't police the entirety of social media.
not only woven into everyday teaching Digital Citizenship should be a specific course/requirement like any other subject
my mother discovered emojis a lst yr. Now I block every method of her lrning abt twitter
It can be hard if you didn’t grow up w/it. New world. Must learn. Must grow.
Best line of the evening! Haha! https://t.co/9eTYned7XE
my mother discovered emojis a lst yr. Now I block every method of her lrning abt twitter
Q7: What resources do you use to continually reinforce the concept of digital citizenship while using social media?
HA! https://t.co/gDPmwvjass
my mother discovered emojis a lst yr. Now I block every method of her lrning abt twitter
Q7: Am constantly sharing media stories and engaging Ss in real world discussions.
A7 Seesaw because it has the comment feature. Allows them to practice positive statements as opposed to bad citizenship
A7: there is a great video floating around for younger Ss with Scruff McGruff.
😂😂😂 that was Stacy Avera...Haha
Not enough favs for this. so that I can add emoji to this!
The dig citz workshops helped kids to realize how o be safe.
A7: Common Sense Media is a great resource.
I HAVE to respond with emoji 😂😂😂 https://t.co/HZ3ZOhHCm0
my mother discovered emojis a lst yr. Now I block every method of her lrning abt twitter
A7: I worked with a HS AD using the Stopit App to hold Stu Aths accountable its a great next step after DC convos have begun
A7: Also now drawing on students own knowledge now and having them share how to stay safe online in Padlet
It's a small thing but a great reinforcement on how to treat one another
Last question is coming up, and it's a catch-all for everything we haven't gotten to yet
Q8: What ways can social media sites/apps be used to creatively engage our students? Basically, how can we make this fun?!
A7: Cyberbullying is a serious issue, particularly in MS.
A7 - Digital citizenship - I set up the norms and expectations at the start with the students. Follow-up regularly.
A7 Worked w/health Ts to revamp old project abt safety to include online/SM. Working on posting some projects to our website
A7 I think have solved this...make sure your grandma is okay b4 you send
A8 Ss can use SM to show off their work/what they do well! Model this.
setting up class Instagram for art projects = fun!
A8: Make ways for kids and their accomplishments to go "viral"
A8: I would love to get my K class tweeting out what we do at school. This is my professional goal for 2nd semester!
A8 - Use Remind 101 for field trip updates. Celebrate classroom wide successes.
encourage meaningful discourse including emoji use-constructive comments to drive aspect of lesson
A8: They're going to use it, we need to be creative &teach them how to use it responsibly Doing a PBL now about it.
Social media is huge because everyone can a celeb. If we can ctrl who sees it Ss can be a celeb to an audience of stakeholders
A8 I know this is like my 1 millionth Seesaw response BUT it allows them to see one anothers successes
Again need new macbook 4emoji.No time2 switch 2phone in fastpaced Twitter chat!
They will have so much fun and Ps will love!
A8: I LOVE to brag on my Ss
A8 creating great videos and uploading them on youtube...they care more about the likes than our grades anyway
try to connect the local class discussion with events and ideas beyond school connect meaning with personal lives
A8 most of our T's have a class twitter, would be great to let the kids take over. Shout out to other classes, their parents
Wish i could get some ipod touches in the room to make this a more obtainable goal 😥😥😥 https://t.co/v6yCcsiYGJ
They will have so much fun and Ps will love!
One class Twitter account and one device is all you need!
communicate with classes internationally
So glad I get to sit in tonight. Getting some TERRIFIC ideas! Thanks all!
our friend tweeted the spacestation as it flew over and a crew member tweeted back that moment-instant feedback
How did he know to do that? Would love to do something like that with GA Studies Ss.
