Q2: Do you teach all or part of a class online (blended?) If you are not teaching, do you recommend teachers use online teaching as part of the classroom? #akedchat
Tammy Morris, also out of the classroom but still in the game, providing PD for teachers around AK, based in Juneau, but in Spokane this week :) Glad to be here with you all! #akedchat
Hi from nowhere near Alaska (Connecticut).
As a parent, I say yes,, in part because the tech is there and it's an opportunity to share what you're doing beyond the classroom. It also may help certain kids who learn in different ways relate to the content. #AKedchat
I use online tools (Google Classroom, etc) but kids aren't required to do online work outside of class. Too hard w/many families having ltd access #akedchat
a2 I have an asychronous yearbook class that is blended. A lot of online work with f2f meetings and check-ins. It is one way we can offer a fine art credit at our school with f2f suport for IEPs (and all). #akedchat

#akedchat A2: I DO recommend that teachers use online opportunities as an integrated aspect of their teaching. However, Ts MUST be fairly comfortable with what they are doing (it's okay to not know everything about it) so I recommend starting at their comfort level & increasing.

A2: "Yes, use the online learning and how are you..." I encourage it along w/ dialogue around how are we using it to level up learning (increased DOK?) level up teaching, offer options for Ss. We're 1 to 1 fortunately, but that's not the why. #akedchat
A3) I don't believe in "should"s (especially not being a teacher), but it's best to have A presence. Experience a Twitter chat even if you don't keep up with it. Know what's out there so you can always turn or return to it when the moment calls for it. #AKedchat
#akedchat A3: That totally depends on the teacher and his/her students. What seamlessly fits in the teaching? Does the online teaching inform the f2f teaching and vice versa? The T should also be able to convey personality/connection/relationships online.
A3: Depends on the individual Ts comfort level w/ all online platforms out there. I believe there are excellent Ts w/ no presence and there are also excellent Ts w/ maximum presence. #akedchat
a3 In instruction, I really appreciate colleagues like @KNRLeslie & @amsuad who are more than just the gradebook keeper of a Ss online class. I do aim to make a presence in my online materials even if it is just a video or voice over & staying true to my writing voice. #akedchat
Q4: When taking an online course, would you prefer knowing that you are learning with others and there is a teacher to guide you, or do you prefer to learn on your own? #akedchat
A3:Part 2- as far as how much a footprint a teacher should have... I come back to function... Does it create a community? Are you learning/sharing with peers? That's the line. Never at the expense of 'being there' with students though. #akedchat

a3 Professionlly, I want to be able to google & see at least something online. Even if they just tried twitter once and have an empty profile. Blog, class website, facebook group member. At least something. It is because *I* gain so much online, I want them to, too. #akedchat
A3: This is such a central question... For teachers as well as those thinking about the administration of online instruction and the foot print of virtual identity. If ur teaching online, it should feel like you are with them... Engaged... 'hearing' them #akedchat
#akedchat A4: I really like being a part of a group, BUT I also really like being able to do the work on my own schedule (just like my M Ed Tech program!). I've also found that most Ss who have participated in my online classes prefer the same thing.

a4 Im the one in a Collaborate class or Skype training filling up the chat box with (mostly) related comments. Im a fan of discussion boards, too. Learning online is collaborative for me. I'll read for independent learning. #akedchat
Ts that make an effort to employ tools and strategies that allow connections among students and teachers in the class are more than gradebook keepers. Relationship is everything, even online. #akedchat

#akedchat A4: out of necessity as a busy parent, I end up being alone in my online learning these days... Stolen moments before breakfast, late nights after bedtime stories... It's just logistics, not really a choice.
#akedchat A5: We can help Ss feel less alone online by responding quickly with our own "voice" whether it's in writing, audio, or video. Quick responses that address the S's contribution are very important.
A5 Check in! n inperson coach in the know. Our DL program has 'dropout detective' now for any T supervising online. In past, I made a bi/weeklypass through Ss powerschool grades to check up. Love this tool we have & and expectation to be a mentor not just supervisor. #akedchat
Actually, it is a choice @saminjuneau - you are choosing your family over learning and that's the way it should be. It won't always be this way :) You'll have plenty of time later to participate in real time! #akedchat

A5: it looks like a lot of online platforms are going with social media feedback models to meet students where they are at... A little πor π can be a good pick me up until it's time to dig deep into assignment feedback. #akedchat
A6: Twitter has been the most productive for me... I find I can be part of multiple communities. And part of a worldwide community of educators. #akedchat
a6 Discussion boards are what I have in my toolbox. We're a @CanvasLMS district so Im sure there are other ways and someday I will male the time to figure them out. :-) #akedchat
Last question for tonight, Q7: With online learning continuing to grow, should teachers consider how best to incorporate some type of online learning in the classroom? #akedchat
Ongoing supportive PD. It's also helpful for Ts to experience the "student" side of it. Experience with the strategies and tools. PD can model for the Ts as they participate. When they experience, they "get" it. #akedchat
A7: #akedchat Great question! I think we're doing a disservice to students and their future learning if we don't. Many jobs are utilizing online learning these days for job skills training. Let's help them be comfortable and confident in this medium.
