What better time to #hacklearning than after hacking time by monkeying w/clocks? Good morning, I'm Brian, & I teach middle-school students English in Colorado.
I've had an alarm set on my phone for ages to remember to join in, but today I actually get to do it! Good morning from the 21st century teaching and learning coordinator in Freeport, Illinois! #hacklearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
A1-Whether greeting students at the door or making my way around the room during a 50 minute period, it's important to check in on each student each day. It's not enough to simply say you care. Checking in on their mental & emotional health is important too! #HackLearning
A1- When looking at negatives think of the positives. Example she is really controlling- But her organization and decision making is needed on this team.

A1: I have been more intentional about greeting teachers everyday. There are teachers I have little to no interaction with. The art teacher has stopped me and thanked me for being so welcoming and thoughtful. So actions to speak louder than thoughts. #HackLearning
Good morning! Adam from Columbus O-H-I-O, part of the Pomme teacher collaborative specializing in identifying, preventing, and extending student @QuitPoint. Always excited to collaborate and learn with the #HackLearning team.
A1 I make sure that Im at the door to greet students and making time to interact with every student every day, consistently following up with students and colleagues, #HackLearning
A1 Praise publicly what my colleagues do ... never even jovially criticize in public ... being intentional means I often don’t recognize sarcasm because I don’t use it in my Profession or my Position anymore. #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
A1: I work with a wide variety of teachers at all levels in my district. I intentionally bring positivity by leading every conversation by asking, "How can I help?" I ask the same question of students and parents. #hacklearning
A1: Be present and give full attention to the people and tasks you encounter, be a light and brighten their path, stay positive and be an encourager, the world has enough critics! 😊 #HackLearning
When working with Ss in class I ask what do you need with instead of what questions do you have. They ask more questions. Listen to them when they have suggestions (led to a new #pbl unit and prescription biology). #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
A1 ➡️ I always remember that EVERYTHING goes back to relationships. So, I focus on building those. Smiles, compliments, and non-academic conversations go a long way. PAY ATTENTION to your students and you will learn a lot about them. #hacklearning
#hacklearning A1: I intentionally celebrate the teachers and students who visit our Innovation Lab. I want them to feel welcome to try new things and stretch our of their comfort zones.
A1: Instead of just doing getting to know you activities in the beginning of the year, consider Friday Favorites. Every Friday, ask students to write their favorite food, artist, sport, etc. Great way for students to get to know the teacher & each other! Kids 💚 it! #hacklearning
A1: We have control over 2 things in life - our attitude and actions. Last week I started the intentional practice of bringing a positive attitude to all situations. This impacts my actions & others actions. #HackLearning
I have learned the little things matter: a smile, a quick hello, noticing and naming their work in the classroom, celebrating teacher learning, linking challenges to solutions and always keeping our work centered around students. #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
A1: There's something to be said for a handwritten note. I like sending notes to teachers and other leaders letting them know that they are doing amazing things for our kids. #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
I appreciate idea of positive framing. E.G., Taking page from Peter Johnston's _Choice Words_ & directing students, "Remember to..." rather than "Don't forget to..." At some point, though. do we run risk of putting lipstick on proverbial pig? (And I *like* pigs!) #hacklearning
A1- When looking at negatives think of the positives. Example she is really controlling- But her organization and decision making is needed on this team.
#hacklearning
A1 I have intentionally coached preservice Ts on ways to connect state standards to lessons that foster relationships w/in my literacy courses. #HackLearning@TWUreadingdept
A1: Last week I popped in to every classroom, no feedback or anything, just asking the T how their weekend was. I wrote some affirmations for office staff, too. I’m blessed to work for a principal who considers one of her three “big rocks” to be relationships. #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
A1: I work hard to take time to send handwritten notes of appreciation, to take initiative to follow up with Ts/Ps who have reached out needing support to check on how it’s going, and to give positive/meaningful/immediate verbal feedback to my Ss throughout the day. #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
Changing our questions is amazing in how littles respond. I ask how can I help you, or tell me how I can help you. They tend to be more open to that. They can't always frame a question but can tell their need. #HackLearning
A1 For my teachers, I'm intentional about talking to them everyday about how their instructional day is going, & if I can be of assistance. With the students, I talk to them in the cafeteria, recess, & after hours activities! I strive to be intentional every moment #HackLearning
A1 ➡️ I always remember that EVERYTHING goes back to relationships. So, I focus on building those. Smiles, compliments, and non-academic conversations go a long way. PAY ATTENTION to your students and you will learn a lot about them. #hacklearning
A1: Instead of just telling the Ss they should tell me when they have a game, I try to find the times so I can go watch... At least once lol #HackLearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
I visited a 4th grade room has a theme for every day; it was Talented Tuesday. Students asked what my secret talent was and I said, "Being old. My body makes weird noises when I move." Then I showed how my back, neck, and shoulders creak and pop. The kids loved it! #HackLearning
A1: I have been incredibly mindful of communication in my new position; whether face 2 face or via email, people need to understand what is happening and why! Being clear & transparent is critical to building relational trust! #HackLearning#HackingLeadership
A1. Celebrate and build on strengths. This includes Ss and Ts! Highlight what they are doing well. Share resources that align with their passions. #hacklearning
A1. People appreciate the most when your actions match your words. Being able to be part of the process whether it is planning, professional development, or meetings tells people that you are in it with them. I don’t expect from others what I can’t do myself #HackLearning
A2-It shows we do not express true gratitude on a regular basis. Most ppl need to improve giving (and receiving) recognition. It's also a reminder that the gratitude we give to others may be the only bit they get all day. #HackLearning
relationships are about give and take ... cant expect to have a positive relationship with students/peers if you never give anything. Relationships are more than handshakes and greetings ...
Q2. Before you answer question 2...text someone who has helped you get to this point in your life. Now...Q2...how did that feel? Are you afraid that the person you texted is going to ask if everything is ok? What does that tell you? #HackLearning
A1 ➡️ I always remember that EVERYTHING goes back to relationships. So, I focus on building those. Smiles, compliments, and non-academic conversations go a long way. PAY ATTENTION to your students and you will learn a lot about them. #hacklearning
A1: The phrase "the thought that counts" come up when action hasn't been taken. In situations where I cannot deliver a helpful action, I make it a point to follow up later that day when at a time when I can be present. #HackLearning@UCOLME
Don’t want to say I did this “with intention” other than to say thank you but it did nurture relationship. I sent thank you notes to the spouse and children of team members and bragged on the impact their mom/partner is having on leaders and 👦🏻👧🏾across GA. #HackLearning
A1: When coaching adults, take the time to get to know them. Consider surveys, interviews, a get to know you question a week! Find out how your staff likes to be appreciated, supported, shouted out, get feedback, what they consider strengths/weaknesses, etc. #hacklearning
A1. For me it was home visits meeting families at my new school. Making intention that their first interactions with the school were positive has helped set the tone for the entire first quarter. #hacklearning
Q1. People say "it's the thought that counts". The thought counts...but the action counts more. What have you done intentionally to bring your positive thoughts to actions when it comes to building relationships? #HackLearning
It was hard to pick just ONE, then you find yourself trying to rank them, just be grateful to all and let them know that
I'm pretty good about keeping in contact so they are not surprised, it does feel good
#hacklearning
Q2. Before you answer question 2...text someone who has helped you get to this point in your life. Now...Q2...how did that feel? Are you afraid that the person you texted is going to ask if everything is ok? What does that tell you? #HackLearning
A2: We don't reach out enough to let people know they matter! As much as they mean to us--we need to tell them. Why don't we do that more often??? #HackLearning
Q2. Before you answer question 2...text someone who has helped you get to this point in your life. Now...Q2...how did that feel? Are you afraid that the person you texted is going to ask if everything is ok? What does that tell you? #HackLearning
A1: We spend so much time together so I ask more questions, get more opinions, listen to more stories. I make time - a few min at the start of lesson to share a group activity. I try to smile more too #HackLearning
Healthy & positive relationships must be at the core of every educational organization if we want highly effective & successful schools. It’s all about people & the way we feel in our schools, which impacts how we perform! #HackingLeadership#HackLearning
Yes I texted a friend and colleague and I am wondering what she will think. I just said Happy Sunday and thanks for the support you have given me #hacklearning
A2: It felt good. She’s been a huge influence in my life as I’ve gotten into leadership. Even a text message can make someone’s day. Texting seems to be the easiest form of communication so might as well use it for good and to lift others up. #HackLearning
Q2. Before you answer question 2...text someone who has helped you get to this point in your life. Now...Q2...how did that feel? Are you afraid that the person you texted is going to ask if everything is ok? What does that tell you? #HackLearning
A1 to put principles before personalities and work to build by uniting strengths vs focusing on weaknesses ... IMO this is at work in functional learning communities for adults and children #HackLearning
A2 Sharing kindness feels pretty great. That said, complimenting doesn't seem like default mindset for most. It often takes something extraordinary (or, in this case, a tweet directive) to shake us out of our habits & into a fresh intention. #hacklearning
A2 felt great ... @nsabrinagates knows how much I appreciate her because I share my gratitude often ... she is an amazing teacher, trainer, mentor, & friend! She helps me grow professionally and personally as I develop my craft and passions! #HackLearning
Q2. Before you answer question 2...text someone who has helped you get to this point in your life. Now...Q2...how did that feel? Are you afraid that the person you texted is going to ask if everything is ok? What does that tell you? #HackLearning
A2: I have had some grea my mentors and I need to thank them more often rather than just reaching out with some seemingly intractable problem. #HackLearning
A1 Truly listen no matter who is speaking and then take actionable steps to implement ideas. Shows respect and trust. Actions are way more powerful than words! #HackLearning
Yes! When I was a brand new teacher, I worked in a school where home visits were required. Such an important way to connect with kids and families! #HackLearning

A2. Slow down! It takes a minute to thank someone, celebrate them, show them you are inspired by their work. That simple act from you can change the course of their day! #hacklearning
A2: I have had some great mentors and I need to thank them more often rather than just reaching out with some seemingly intractable problem. #HackLearning
On a personal level, when my parents each turned 75, we celebratedtheir birthday with a meal and a eulogy ... we shared all the ways they blessed, taught, & loved us ... while they could still hear it. They still talk about that day. #HackLearning
A2 It reinforced to me to ensure that I'm always in a mindset of gratitude and thanks to those who helped me get to where I am. It felt great! #HackLearning
A2: honestly no text very early here in the front range, want to let friends sleep. Thought though is who I would text would respond with "You're Welcome." I let this person know regularly how much I appriciate them being in my life. #HackLearning
A1: I'm always intentionally positive - smiling, saying hello and how are you (and listening to the answer), asking, "How may I help you today?" and always being able to laugh. #hacklearning
I think sometimes we take time for granted and think we will ‘get to it’ eventually. Before you know it, too much time passes and it becomes a missed opportunity. Have to make time to be intentional about this.
I just texted a mentor who has helped me learn, grow & evolve; saying thank you felt amazing and the response brought tears to my eyes! I’m fortunate to be surrounded by many amazing educators! #HackLearning#HackingLeadership
A1: I try to put myself in their shoes or consider how I would function if I was (or when I was) in their situation. If that doesn’t get me in the right headspace, I question if my planned words or actions are solution-based or just me talking. Lol #hacklearning
When was the last time you advocated for your kids? Walked into the Principal's office and said our kids need this ... clapped back during a meeting when it derailed in a negative way toward students. #hacklearning
A2. I‘ve done this many times & it always feels great! She was never surprised, but very grateful (as I‘d do this a few times a yr). My mentor passed away in July, but everything that she showed me how 2 be a leader & create relationships w/ influence is very alive #HackLearning

Sincerely, Brian

A2: I hope my sister in Utah isn't upset with me texting so early, but she has three little ones, so I assume she is always awake! I try to thank people often so this wasn't much different, although I was reminded of needing to thank her for something, anyway! #HackLearning
A2. Thank a parent for their support! My son’s teacher called just to say thank you for everything you do to support his learning. As a mom and an educator that call...❤️ #hacklearning

A3-
1- Tell THEM! A lot of times we think the positive things but we don't say it!
2- Write a note to someone to let them know the impact they are making!

A3: Don’t focus on what’s wrong, focus on what’s good and what’s going well, focus on what’s next and how to get there! Learn from mistakes and grow forward together! 😊 👍 #HackLearning
This is so true! I try to shy away from empty offers to help but try to follow through with the opportunity I am presented with. And if I cannot help in the moment I try to follow up later, so students/coworkers knows I mean my word. #hacklearning@UCOLME
A3: I will note something positive on my calendar for everyone I meet and then share it at the outset. I will make sure I schedule time to take the road less travelled and see people I haven’t seen in a while. #HackLearning

A2 always feel good to give positives away - I fear some people seldom hear what’s working in a relationship or empathy from another but we all can benefit from positives that are real #hacklearning
A2/3 this week trying to support new teachers as goals are due. Talking through goals and actions help to detail what is important in their practice #hacklearning

The thing about #hacklearning that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
A1: I tried to "listen" more this week as the end of the month brough on more needs for teachers as semester closed. Hearing them vs. just solving problems was one things I tried #hacklearning
That’s awesome Alex!! Being an authentic cheerleader goes a long way- encourages people to take risks because they know they are supported! #HackLearning
A3: I think as it is often hard to remember to complement each other/students on meaningful things about character and relationships rather than "great lesson" or "cute shirt." These are things I want to be more intentional about. #hacklearning@UCOLME
I have two students presenting at a conference with me on Tuesday and I'm excited to learn from them, for them to share their knowledge about PBL with educators #HackLearning

Honestly, I was humbled to be asked to help the principal: she has been a school leader much longer than I've been teaching, but I know she wouldn't have asked if she didn't believe I could help make a difference for her staff and students. #HackLearning
