So to start I am working with a couple of science departments on this project Urban Science https://t.co/1JaUBjSUvv here is our framework https://t.co/QNUMg56MGr #asechat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 7 @ 3:01 PM EST
Hi @margaretflem looking forward to tonights #ASEchat it’s a challenging topic to include in the curriculum with a strong political flavour
  • ViciaScience Jan 7 @ 3:02 PM EST
Hi Margaret. Is the link supposed to be to the conference flyer? #ASEChat

  • margaretflem Jan 7 @ 3:02 PM EST
Maybe I should have started with Happy New year and welcome to 2019 #asechat 😄 on Sustainability education
  • ViciaScience Jan 7 @ 3:03 PM EST
This looks like an interesting read. Thanks! Is it only for urban schools or are there messages for everyone? #ASEchat
    In reply to @margaretflem
  • margaretflem Jan 7 @ 3:03 PM EST

Happy New Year to all #ASEchat folk Looking forward to @margaretflem leading a discussion about sustainbility education - a topic close to my heart when I worked on SATIS and #C21Science
  • ViciaScience Jan 7 @ 3:06 PM EST
On closer inspection what I took to be a conference flyer is a listing of all of the workshops on sustainability. Brilliant! #ASEChat https://t.co/45AZm75b9T

  • margaretflem Jan 7 @ 3:06 PM EST
Yes it was a joy pulling it together and we ended up with too many articles #asechat hence the supplement
    In reply to @NeedhamL56
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 7 @ 3:08 PM EST
I was shocked that the English Curriculum for science does not have explicit references to sustainability. 3 cheers for Scotland and Wales (when they get there) #ASEchat
  • NeedhamL56 - Moderator Jan 7 @ 3:09 PM EST
Great opportunity to find out more, and how your school could model approaches to sustainability #ASEchat
  • ViciaScience Jan 7 @ 3:09 PM EST
What is worse is that it was included in earlier science NC documents and then dropped in 2014 #ASEChat

Thursday 2pm debate on shaping the future science curriculum at #ASEConf What should be included in future science curricula regarding sustainability? #ASEChat
  • stormeducation Jan 7 @ 3:11 PM EST
#asechat @NeedhamL56, we thought the curriculum was a bit lacking in that area. especially when it is going to be so important in everyone's lives, and an area where #science can make a difference
  • margaretflem Jan 7 @ 3:13 PM EST
Yes for example Hungary and Cyprus both operate big sustainability education departments. The former - it is now part of teacher assessment #asechat
    In reply to @ViciaScience, @NeedhamL56
  • ViciaScience Jan 7 @ 3:13 PM EST
Attempts were made to include food, water, energy security in latest science NC but got turned down by lords and masters - no reason given #ASEChat

What Iliked was that it is linked to citizenship and the responsibility of all. Danger if sustainability just becomes another science curriculum topic?? #ASEchat
    In reply to @margaretflem
  • margaretflem Jan 7 @ 3:18 PM EST
Yes there is still a lot of ‘sustainability’ content in the present NC and indeed working scientifically via sustainability content is a great idea. I think within the present system we can do much but it can be a bit ad hoc #asechat

With separate sciences there is often a lack of joining the issues raised in one subject with issues raised in other. This is where cross science, scientific discussion are so valuable. #asechat

And interesting to read Justin Dillons piece in EiS - ozone was a problem but is no longer because it is fixable. Climate change is a 'wicked' problem because it cannot be fixed. Level of complexity so much greater it becomes cross cutting #ASEChat
