Happy New Year to all #ASEchat folk Looking forward to @margaretflem leading a discussion about sustainbility education - a topic close to my heart when I worked on SATIS and #C21Science
On closer inspection what I took to be a conference flyer is a listing of all of the workshops on sustainability. Brilliant! #ASEChathttps://t.co/45AZm75b9T
I was shocked that the English Curriculum for science does not have explicit references to sustainability. 3 cheers for Scotland and Wales (when they get there) #ASEchat

@theASE has published several Best Practice Guidance documents https://t.co/SF3XmAXXoz one of which has a focus on Environment and Sustainability, a quick 2 page read with links to support #ASEchat
Thursday 2pm debate on shaping the future science curriculum at #ASEConf What should be included in future science curricula regarding sustainability? #ASEChat
#asechat@NeedhamL56, we thought the curriculum was a bit lacking in that area. especially when it is going to be so important in everyone's lives, and an area where #science can make a difference
There seems to have been a shift recently in the general public's perceptions #plastics but we know how much young people care, this is a win win context for engagement for a start #ASEchat

The thing is this is a global issue, we are all in this together. Clear, unbiased education for the people who’s future is in ours and their hands #ASEchat
What Iliked was that it is linked to citizenship and the responsibility of all. Danger if sustainability just becomes another science curriculum topic?? #ASEchat
Yes there is still a lot of ‘sustainability’ content in the present NC and indeed working scientifically via sustainability content is a great idea. I think within the present system we can do much but it can be a bit ad hoc #asechat
Oh wow! loads of opportunities for graph interpretation, looking for patterns, that’s before you get to the implications for the country and the future! #ASEchat
RT RoySocChem :
Visit our stand theASE 2019 conference next week! We’re also involved in lots of talks including a panel discussion on 'what makes a great science department?' with chemDrK, Grevster73 and mspalmerncs6th. Hope to see you there! #ASEChathttps://t.co/rI10tp9C7z …
As a gentle introduction lesson, what should be done with 'used' Christmas trees? On news today they were being used to prevent river erosion! #ASEChat
With separate sciences there is often a lack of joining the issues raised in one subject with issues raised in other. This is where cross science, scientific discussion are so valuable. #asechat
What about Ecoschool status? https://t.co/3GGzghiMFc lots of ideas here to incorporate a sustainable culture across the school, which can be tapped into in science #ASEchat@sarahpurplee uses this to guide science work
Yes their ecoschools programme is very interesting when I went I discovered you can’t get the award unless you speak some Maori language #busmansholiday#asechat
OK. Lets learn Maori then! I have already learned to pronounce 'g' more softly> Maori culture is far more sympathetic to nature and the environment than ours in UK #ASEChat
Speaking at #ASEconf? I’m looking for a session that solves a real classroom problem that participants have. Content not important but need to see a problem solved by theory or best practice that you help the participants get to grips with. #ASEchat
I think we need to consider which aspects of sustainability fall within science, and also within the separate disciplines. Use of plastic containers for example is not easy to pigeon hole #ASEChat
We have in physics ozone hole, global warming, fuel sustainability - but its never linked with issues in chemistry, such as plastics and things like population issues in biology. Kids aren't getting the whole picture of just how difficult things are. #asechat
And interesting to read Justin Dillons piece in EiS - ozone was a problem but is no longer because it is fixable. Climate change is a 'wicked' problem because it cannot be fixed. Level of complexity so much greater it becomes cross cutting #ASEChat

Once used google Earth & we “went” to South America. Looks green but when you “fly” in to ground level you can really see the deforestation. Vast areas of rectangular, barron land. Felt that was more powerful than telling them the area of Wales being lost per minute, etc #asechat
Is this an argument for restructuring the sciences, disposing of the old physics, chemistry and biology labels and replacing with materials, environment and health sciences? #ASEChat

Great application of use of technology. I suppose there is an opening too for some VR work, would have a similar impact feel like you are really there #ASEchat
@LeoDudin has pioneered a kind of "science plus" workshop at our school where a teacher from each science and one invited from outside of science discuss an issue like sustainability. It works really well. The kids discuss it for days #asechat
For example we used real data to estimate the power from a proposed tidal barrage across the Mersey......700 MW at spring tides, between 100 and 200 MW at neap #ASEchat

To really appreciate what solar has done nationally, here are some charts showing the British electricity mix over the last 7 summer days
I passionately believe that solar + storage have a role to play in the UK energy mix. Particularly domestic PV.
https://t.co/lYI30spqf7
And then we measured the heat capacity of local sandstone to make estimates of the low enthalpy geothermal resource beneath Manchester (following on from an article on the local tv news) #asechat
Not to mention their solar calculations to find out how much energy we’d get when a local farmer wanted to install a solar farm (he didn’t....but not because of our calls) #asechat
There is a lot to recommend familiarity of labels as long as there is room to review and modify the content covered. Currently that does not seem to happen #ASEchat

Its also worth reading Jonathan Osbournes article in School Science review about the USA's NGSS https://t.co/PxhYR1qkiJ (sorry if you are not an @theASE member)interesting cross cutting ideas, and scientific practices we could learn from #ASEchat
I might be being cynical (I hope I am) but the issue won’t seem important enough till people can’t have things like phones and electricity and holidays! #asechat
Overruled this evening on suggested name changes for science disciplines. But lets not forget the demise of earth science in the curriculum in recent years now science has become 'triple' #ASEChat
If anyone is local to it, Surrey Satellite Technology has various poster photos on display. The infra-red ones showing deforestation are very striking. Prolly on web too, but nice trip. #asechat

I watched a documentary that suggested that the world turning vegan would reclaim land the same area as Africa. We don’t need to go that far but surely part of they way? #asechat
I think so, any suggestions/ideas? I tend to start off with @PA_Schools wind power challenge for younger students then just ‘add up’ the power from wind turbines in Liverpool bay #asechat
Our school has a little readout that tells you the amount of energy being supplied by the solar cell panels on the roof. That is a daily reminder of the need for sustainability and the potential of possible solutions. #asechat
small steps, collectively make a big difference. Been veggie for a very long time (35ish years) made vegan meringue out of chickpea juice this holiday, small steps #ASEchat

I always compare power with Fiddlers Ferry coal fired power station which is 2000 MW. Helps them understand when I say the a Burbo Bank wnd turbine is 8 MW #asechat
Also @Draxnews do good resources. Fine example of coal power station pushing forward with new ways of generating electricity sustainably. Their use of by products is impressive for example #asechat
I am working with @GOVUK at the moment to raise the visibility of engineering in schools. Its an issue that @IMechE and @RAEngNews are also looking at, I believe. #asechat

#asechat this has been quite exhausting keeping up I will need a few hours to catch up. Some amazing ideas to capture hoping to see at least some of you @theASE conference in Liverpool the flier for the sustainability workshops is on this chat still 7 minutes to go!!
