Welcome to #Globaledchat! Today we are continuing our exploration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our focus will be on Goal #4: Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opps for all. https://t.co/IJXE9wkQvq#TeachSDGs
Hi, my name is Lisa. I attend Stockton University and am studying secondary education with a concentration in Chemistry. Looking forward to participating in this chat! #gen2108#globaledchat
Q1: Do you include discussions of access to quality education and/or equity in education in your classroom? What are some examples of projects/lessons addressing these topics? #globaledchat
A1. When we teach Kaffir Boy, we have discussions about the lack of a quality education that the main character receives during apartheid. We also discuss the disparity of education between communities in The Other Wes Moore. #globaledchat
A1) I have never talked about equity when it comes to education on the global scale but sounds like a great start by point for some great conversations. #Globaledchat
Hello! My name is Saffron. I currently attend Iowa State University as an elementary education major! Looking forward to this chat tonight! #globaledchat
A2: There are an increasing number of free online resources that can connect schools around the world (if the technology is available!). @EmpaticoOrg is a good one for elementary grades. #Globaledchat

A1: It's definitely an important topic to address. As a future chemistry educator, I'm curious as to how I can do my part; perhaps in discussing with my class the lack of opportunities in science ed in other parts of the society or world as a whole #gen2108#globaledchat
A1: Our students write to pen-pals in Uganda to share their daily lives at school. Highlights disparity in quality and access, while helping students develop an appreciation for the potential of their own education. #globaledchat
Yes! Definitely! And our topic next week on this chat is #GirlsinSTEM and encouraging more science education for girls, so come back next week too. #globaledchat
A1: I think as a future educator that it's extremely important to address as many issues as you can with your students. It's important to express to them how important education is. #globaledchat
A2: Financial and geographic literacy -- across all grade levels. Important to provide context and emphasis to universal, shared need for empowerment and opportunity through education, at home and abroad. #globaledchat
Also would be great to highlight scientific accomplishments of other countries and #POC. I can’t believe I learned about Hidden Figures until the movie came out. #Globaledchat

A1) I watched a documentary once about different classrooms all over the world. It was so interesting to see there are many differences that can be both positive and negative from what I experienced in the US. #Globaledchat
I think it would be very beneficial for students to see other classrooms and talk about the differences. Is it still education? Can we learn in different ways? In a classroom or outside? These questions could spark a good discussion about equity and more! #GlobalEdChat
Thank you! Glad to be here! I am also glad that there are Education majors here, so I am not the only one! Oh and yes I am assigned to participate in an a chat! However, I look forward to it! :) #globaledchat
I agree. Students experiencing and interacting directly with global problems will let it sink in even more for them, and perhaps inspire them to be proactive #gen2108#globaledchat
A2) The biggest challenge is ignorance. Years ago, I remember learning about a community that didn’t have a school. We ended up raising money for the students to build a school that they could attend. Since then, conversations haven’t been had #Globaledchat
My 9th grade American history students do exactly that and it's an eye-opening exchange to say the least. Here's an example of a letter sent from a 14-year-old student in Kanungu, Uganda describing her school life to her pen-pal in New Jersey. #globaledchat
A2: With students of privilige, going beyond understanding to equality and equity building. Making more than just a case study or donation based project. Bureaucracy can be a blanket challenge as well. #Globaledchat
A1- Beginning of school year, We learn about schools around the world. It’s amazing the conversations that start when Ss realize that all schools aren’t equipped with technology, desks, chairs and even school supplies. Great opportunity to discuss inequalities. #Globaledchat
That is a fantastic point and I will definitely incorporate this in my future classroom. Other countries and especially #POC are too often overlooked for their many accomplishments #gen2108#Globaledchat
A2: I believe that all student have the right to equal education. However, I think just being able to address the conversation could be a big challenge. Sometimes it hard to find the right way to have these conversations. These discussions need to happen. #globaledchat
Great point... even in our own district, counties, and state! Seeing disparity and differences at the local level might heighten their awareness to those that exist elsewhere in lieu of learners' ignorance or lack of exposure to other cultures and countries. #globaledchat
This is so true. Sometimes we think that just creating a fundraiser is enough, when in reality it isn't. You can't make a change by just creating a donation project. #globaledchat
Q4: Part of #SDG4 is “promotion of a culture of peace & non-violence, global citizenship & appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.” Share why #globalcitizenship#education should be implemented in primary schools. #globaledchat
A2: I feel like sometimes students (and adults) have a difficult time differentiating equity and equality. Sometimes more support is needed to bring those who struggle to fair ground #Gen2108#globaledchat
A3- I absolutely love sharing Read Alouds like Listend to the Wind and Rain School to show of school setting perspectives. When my Ss compare our struggles of technology running slower to using sticks and dirt as writing tools, it’s puts things into perspective. #Globaledchat
It's important to keep in mind that issues of inequality are around us everyday both in our communities and around the world. To have a better understanding of these issues, we should empower students to take action in their own lives and their community. #globaledchat
A4 A foundation of empathy, cross-cultural understanding, acceptance, tolerance, & humanizing of "others" is critical at early ages to counter stereotypes & misconceptions #globaledchat
A1- Beginning of school year, We learn about schools around the world. It’s amazing the conversations that start when Ss realize that all schools aren’t equipped with technology, desks, chairs and even school supplies. Great opportunity to discuss inequalities. #Globaledchat
Q5: In 2018, for the first time, OECD will include global competence as part of the PISA exam. How is your country preparing? How are you preparing in your school? #globaledchat
A3: I attached an informative link from the Center for Public Education. As a future educator, I'm excited to look through everyone's responses! https://t.co/E1Jtxesb7S#globaledchat#gen2108
We agree! Young children are forming their identities during this critical stage and we should be nurturing their ability to understand others and appreciate different perspectives. #globaledchat
A4: Contextualizes all of the rules/procedures (from niceties to simple do's and don't's) for students from an early age. They aren't mediums for discipline or behavioral control, but guides and markers for appropriate, compassionate, and productive behavior. #globaledchat
A5 Teaching global competence & it's underlying dimensions such as intercultural awareness, social justice, analyzing mult perspectives are an embedded part of my university courses for pre-service Ts. Hopefully that gets carried forward! #globaledchat
I feel like more schools and teachers should do this. The life-long impact this must have on students must be incredible. I applaud you for this #Gen2108#globaledchat

A4- I teach at a global primary school and I am so proud to watch how starting at such a young age helps mold and change stereotypical views and close-mindedness. It’s so powerful! #Globaledchat
A3: Here is a video that I think would be helpful when talking to students about the quality and access to education everywhere. I am excited to see what everyone has to share! https://t.co/j6Q0ydhVHL …
#globaledchat
This is a serious concern in New Jersey where I teach -- heavy reliance on local property taxes to fund schools and a misappropriation of state funds meant to supplement those shortcomings in tax revenue = under-funding of already under-served student populations. #globaledchat

@sandra_bays, @hsingmaster, @epMSUeducation, @wch33
Going off of your post regarding the exchange of letters... perhaps students could exchange letters with other students from disadvantaged school districts, just simply describing their experiences/ every day school life to see not all schools are the same #globaledchat#gen2108
A5- We have Global Education in several of our elementary schools in our county. I keep hoping the energy and urgency to keep such an important focus will catch on in the middle and high schools. It’s a gift that every student deserves!
A6 Our university has exchange programs w/ international universities for Ss. Our organization (C-GEO) thanks to community funding provides international summer institutes for Ts & pre-service Ts in Oregon #globaledchat
#globaledchat A4 We took Grades 6-8 to Sweden, Russia and Canada this last semester. Grades 2-3 are going to Israel on Monday. Our Ss have enjoyed learning and sharing culture with the counterparts around the world. Great opportunity to go beyond the walls of school.
A6: Open and share our resources with local communities across intersections of inequality, in turn contribute to our knowledge base, enrich relationships, and lives. Coming together for solving with the recognition that these are OUR issues!. #collaboration#PBL#globaledchat
A4: I believe that #globalcitizenship#education should be implemented in primary schools because students need to know about the connections around the world. They need to learn about global issues whether it be political or socially. #globaledchat
A4: Starting with primary school, students will be able to begin early on in being proactive. Most importantly, they can learn HOW to be proactive and appreciative of cultural diversity and overall compassion from the start! #globaledchat
A6: We have a service trip to Guatemala for students to install stoves. We also have an exchange program with a Japanese school. Students are housed with families here and in Japan. Great opportunity for cultural understanding. #Globaledchat
Q7: How will you work to improve #globalcitizenship#education efforts in your classroom and in your entire school?
How can we ensure equitable access to global citizenship education? #globaledchat
Yes! Also, much easier to implement than international pen-pals and exchanges. Shared Google Docs, school e-mail addresses, Google Hangouts, and group/class messaging apps all make communication instantaneous and easily-monitored. Worth considering! #globaledchat
A4: Starting with primary school, students will be able to create lifelong habits. Most importantly, they can learn HOW to be proactive and appreciative of cultural diversity and overall compassion from the start! #globaledchat#gen2108
A5: I will be honest and say that I have never heard on the PISA exam but I am interested to see what everyone else's thoughts are on this topic. #globaledchat
A7 By continuing to embed global competence methods & resources in my university courses. Ensuring equitable access will always be the difficult one across the globe!! #globaledchat
A6: Being a future educator I can say that I can't answer this question as I am not apart of a district. However, I will say that I have worked with an International Baccalaureate school in the past and I thought it was amazing! #globaledchat
A7- I use my voice through social media, daily conversations w/Co workers, mentoring, & modeling to show my dedication & belief in providing global education. It has truly inspired & changed the way I view my role as a teacher. I have a responsibility to my Ss! #Globaledchat
A7B One way to work towards equitable access is to seek classroom partners to videoconference w/ or have as pen pal partners from countries whose voices are marginalized so their voice can be heard #globaledchat
A7: Working in circles instead of top down. Capacity building and bringing learning outside of the classroom into the lives of each other. #globalcitizenship#education#globaledchat
Q6: First step -- create them! Start with intradistrict exchanges (partnered classrooms between schools, Google Hangouts/@SkypeClassroom, collaborative assignments, etc.) and expand. Grow organically and your colleagues and community members will follow suit. #globaledchat
Thank you for your public voice. I do think teachers--at least some of them--have an obligation to speak on behalf of what's important for our children's future. #GlobalEdChat
A6: First step -- create them! Start with intradistrict exchanges (partnered classrooms between schools, Google Hangouts/@SkypeClassroom, collaborative assignments, etc.) and expand. Grow organically and your colleagues and community members will follow suit. #globaledchat
Awesome point! We need to ensure that this young curiosity is encouraged and able to grow, instead of being ignored or shut down. Maybe then we can see cultural acceptance throughout our society :) #gen2108#globaledchat
Absolutely! This is crucial! When we find something valuable for our own classroom, we share for all classrooms. Teachers can choose to use or save for another year. #globaledchat
A7) Discussions such as this promote its universal importance. Equity comes with support and a lot of commitment. Grateful you all demonstrate this. #GlobalEdChat
