Lance Taylor, Principal, TN
A1: S ownership of learning means that Ss have opp to construct meaning & knowledge rather than only passively receive it.
A1: Ss making decisions about their learning. Making connections with content & their interest. Increasing critical thinking skills
also give them more purpose when it comes to school Instead of something they have to do it can be intriguing
begins with a pedagogical paradigm shift of letting go.
A1: students knowing where they are in their learning and where they need to end up
A1: S ownership means they are in control. Ss chose how to learn/how to show learning. Also, S access available resources on own.
Laurie district level learning leader joining from BC Canada.
A1:Ss are the focal point of all instructional opportunities. Learning is centered around Ss & they take a lead role in the process
A1: Students own learning when it is relevant to their lives, when they see purpose in the educational process.
Yes. Active participants instead of passive onlookers. Also should have voice in process.
A1: Ss ownership = voice and choice on their own learning journey
A1:Student ownership of learning means they know their target and their end in mind and they help with getting there.
A1: Sts take pride in their work & care about the quality of it. They can communicate what they learned.
Q1. Taking the reins on their learning, getting excited & teaching others,
A1: Student ownership means Ss have understanding of their learning, goals, and progress. Student ownership = growth mindset.
Q1 S ownership is them understanding the objective and where they are on the journey to reaching it.
A1- S ownership means that S know what they are learning, why they are learning it, and they have a voice in how they learn it
A1 ownership is knowing the path to learning and charting it with understanding of the end goal in mind but also a desire to learn
Completely agree! Students have to love learning and have intrinsic motivation.
Hi my name is Stephanie. I'm a pre-service teacher and this is my first twitter chat
exactly. And in a class with no motivation it can get boring.
I agree.. It’s empowering the Ss to do more… https://t.co/LL9Qfp5cLq
begins with a pedagogical paradigm shift of letting go.
A1: Student ownership comes when the T is not the "talking head". Let them discuss topics, create questions, assess themselves.
Jeremie Smith MS Principal from Mattoon, IL joining
when they don't love learning they treat school with a bad attitude
Definitely teaching others - best way to learn.
Ss ownership hinges on Ss grasping the goals and becoming invested in learning. I find this results in motivation & perseverance
A1: When Ss are given opportunity 2 make learning their own, they use Deci&Ryan's theory &kids have intrinsic mot. to do the work
If a student can say "I made this!"with pride, then they have taken ownership.
It’s not doing for them what they can do for themselves. Making their wings flap. https://t.co/DXFsmV1G29
A1: S ownership means they are in control. Ss chose how to learn/how to show learning. Also, S access available resources on own.
having students asking the questions is so important. It makes them interested. They'll want to know.
A2: Lecture, teacher driven methods are biggest hindrance. Have to provides ss w/ voice in process of learning.
This is such an impactful letter! Reminds me of the "power" that a T has & how much we learn from our Ss! https://t.co/SlSqQUpJbi
A1: Student-designed, directed, produced, and owned. Hi , it's Leslie!
A1: When learners seek opportunities in their own education
A2 - Teachers not comfortable enough to let go.
And the teacher is the revolving facilitator. https://t.co/a7QgHAiI7s
A1:Ss are the focal point of all instructional opportunities. Learning is centered around Ss & they take a lead role in the process
A1: Students own learning when they take responsibility for teaching their peers.
A2, The sage on the stage can rob students of ownership.
A2: Ts not providing a student-centered environ. Ss sitting behind desk taking notes instead of being actively engaged.
So true. And with high intrinsic motivation comes even higher levels of learning. https://t.co/HcVgpKYvet
A1: When Ss are given opportunity 2 make learning their own, they use Deci&Ryan's theory &kids have intrinsic mot. to do the work
telling them the information. Speaking at them and not to them. We need to engage them
A1: Students taking initiative and being in control of their learning as well as helping out their peers
A2 too much leading by T, not enough voice and choice by Ss, inability to allow Ss to have control
A2: Ss not having clear understanding of target or purpose
Welcome! Twitter is a game-changer! Glad you're here!
A2 sadly our system sometimes hinders students. Students need time to investigate, question, & think - unfortunately this is rare
Catching up on a new (to me) chat and loving the topic of student ownership!
A2. Trying to make learning a rather than a .
I am glad you mentioned voice and choice. It’s empowering to kids to know they had a hand in the decision. https://t.co/JdU6FaN6Pv
A1: Ss ownership = voice and choice on their own learning journey
definitely agree with this. They aren't taught to let go so some don't know how
Q2. Large group questioning from the teacher. Ss get excited to show off to others & feel comfort in small group discussion.
A2b sadly students are often use to "sit and get" and just want to be told what to learn- it takes a change in mindset for Ts & Ss
A2: Teachers as holders of content knowledge, teacher-centered instruction, mandated curricula, school hours...
A2: Ss have to feel their input is valued or they don't buy into ownership.
A2 Definitely competition against others hinders it
Yes, it definitely goes back to the growth mindset. They go hand in hand. https://t.co/weLDbLGGH6
A1: Student ownership means Ss have understanding of their learning, goals, and progress. Student ownership = growth mindset.
A2: The same lecture, assignment, project, etc. for every student.
A2- T giving too much stand & deliver of content hinders S ownership. S need to be active participants & the T is the facilitator
I always try to give my after school students a voice. I try to ask them what I can do to make it better.
joining a little late, but didn't want to miss such a good chat
A2: Key is to change our focus in the classroom and work to accomplish goals together. Allow s's to come up w/ plan to succeed.
A2: Ps & Ts "giving" Sts answers & helping too much. Sts need to investigate, struggle, persevere in order to take ownership.
And we cannot forget knowing what the end could or should look like https://t.co/MrIRqrhA7T
Q1 S ownership is them understanding the objective and where they are on the journey to reaching it.
is a growing community of so don't forget to add to your tonight.
A2: Students do not own the work when: "Anyone, anyone" teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off https://t.co/p20Ok3AnaW via
A2: Students do not own the work when: "Anyone, anyone" teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off https://t.co/gWET7zWAdV via
A2: Ts and Ss experience awesome learning as they move out of their comfort zone ... Take more risks
A2 Using grading practices that don't form additional learning or form instruction
Yes. The Ss do need to change their mindset and embrace the flex learning. :)
A2: Teacher led lessons that don't provide opps for S discussion, and varied responses. Kids will surprise us!
I ❤️ the IB curriculum - because it inspires Ss and creates thinkers. I love seeing him learn and bring us https://t.co/eQKcZEH0yn
Yes. I think this is something that needs to change in preservice training.
A2: teachers need to facilitate student learning by guiding w/ strong questions that provoke student thinking and problem-solving
There is so much truth to this… Read the caption below and respond to this sidebar conversation. https://t.co/cYYfnkfza7
A2: When Ss share their ideas once &are accepted & get good feedback from teachers, they will prob share ideas again
A2: not giving Ss the time and space to develop their own learning styles; thinking that forcing kids will result in motivation.
A2: Too much "teaching" & not enough time facilitating/supporting Ss as they learn. Ss need to be active in the learning process.
Constant feedback to help keep them going and open ended questions help.
So many college profs are from the "old school"--Need to be making the shift as well.
It is so beneficial to both Ts and Ss when Ts take the risk and hand over that control!
When Ts are comfortable letting go of the control, Ss can soar.
Knowing the path...even letting them chart it (like you mentioned), and finding their way back at times. https://t.co/0mQAUE4k0i
A1 ownership is knowing the path to learning and charting it with understanding of the end goal in mind but also a desire to learn
Dan, business teacher from St. Louis, jumping in late. Will catch up in a min.
A2: Ts doing too much teaching and not enough facilitating so true learning can occur.
A2: Ts with low expectations or a fixed mindset can't relinquish any control to foster S-led learning.
True, T are so pressured by time, they don't feel they are able to provide as much ownership as they would like
Stephanie, We LOVE pre-service Ts. You are so welcome here anytime. Thanks for bringing some new ideas https://t.co/pHJTaRKJTd
Hi my name is Stephanie. I'm a pre-service teacher and this is my first twitter chat
Great point. It's important to strike the right balance. https://t.co/Y14EEaX8WD
A2: Ts doing too much teaching and not enough facilitating so true learning can occur.
A2: Too much focus on compliance and not enough on S engagement, choice & voice hinders Ss taking ownership of their learning.
I remember very few college classes in which I felt ownership.
A2 a lot of times adolescent students want to blend in instead of stand out, forcing students to share their work can be a negative
Tom, Tech director from Northern NJ. Swinging in a little late.
A1: S ownership means they are vested in their education and taking action in trying to learn the material for each class.
A1 Ss know what must do because they read the data and take on tasks to strengthen the skills they are struggling with
A2: Not using pre-assessments or self-assessments to drive instruction,choice,differentiation...all learners having to do all same
exactly! Teachers need to be the Guide on the side, not the sage on the stage.
Yes. Makes it hard for new t's to make transition from what they've seen modeled. Needs to change.
A2: Students not being able to learn in a way that suits them best. Need to remember multiple intelligences!
We have taken to social media this semester and I've noticed an uptick in quality. We will see if my Ss answer!
I completely agree. I've seen it far too much
So much truth in this as our kids are at home and confined to 4 walls at school too often.
Agreed. At times, that quiet space is uncomfortable, but it gives them time to process their valuable input.
A2: Not enough time and teaching given to our staff on these best practices. We must be better!
A2-Focusing on compliance instead of critical and creative thinking. Ss need to be able to show their learning in diverse ways.
peer assessment will greatly enhance learning and student ownership
A2 I think that when a lesson is 100% teacher led it makes it hard for students to be engaged.
It's great for concept intro, small group, etc.
A2: we don't help Ss become independent thinkers & problem solvers by giving them all answers and asking them to regurgitate them
A2: Viewing failure as negative rather than a natural part of learning keeps Ss from stepping into owning the learning.
A2: Shifting from compliance to the 'why'
teachers should give them the objective before and then observe as the students go. Letting them take the wheel.
T needs to be comfortable as the guide on the side S should be the center of the lesson not the T
A3 I believe direct instruction meets needs-blended learning environments that allow Ss 2 seek what works best for personalization
A3: On-demand for one or some students to help them get over hurdles on their path. To whole class for administrivia details.
A3: I think it has its place (ex: my sts can't teach themselves to factor trinomials) but it should be as limited as possible.
A2: Ts or parents that do the work for them and enable that behavior. Makes it hard to take ownership in their learning.
Differentiation is a must! We cannot continue giving everyone the same sized shoe. https://t.co/sxuW6LmJKV
A2: The same lecture, assignment, project, etc. for every student.
A3: Ts role as a facilitator to student learning & comprehension of content. Be the Ss biggest cheerleader/motivator!
International Baccalaureate.
So many ways to assess learning. I used to give hospital intake forms after reading Catcher in the Rye as a summative
Q3: Mini-lessons with small group/individual follow-up. Scaffolded instruction based on S need. Provide stems for convo
A3. Being proactive in future misunderstandings by students...then let 'em explore!
if students can see a link between the learning and how it will benefit them in the future they will take ownership
A2: direct instruction, sit and get learning, T knows all, sage on the stage, tell vs inquire
. Totally agree. Students need to be able to demonstrate how they are "smart" Not all linguistic learners.
At the end of the day it's the Ss who need to know how to use and apply the learning that takes place in school.
A3- Teacher-directed should be short and used to model and teach new content- follow the gradual release mode- I do, we do, you do
I don't hear about MI much any more, but it seemed like a great idea back in 2006. Thoughts? https://t.co/ZnHiNl4U5C
A2: Students not being able to learn in a way that suits them best. Need to remember multiple intelligences!
open ended questions are great ideas! Though less practical, they give Ss an opportunity to explain their answer.
I completely agree with you! Student engagement is important in successful learning.
Leadership thinking by putting Ss thinking first. is happening right now. via https://t.co/ZKfWyAPE89
A2: Too much "teaching" & not enough time facilitating/supporting Ss as they learn. Ss need to be active in the learning process.
I use direct instruction rarely to fill in gaps--Focus on what s's aren't finding and give hints to help s's progress toward goal
A3: DI in non-inquiry based lessons should include gradual release, high expectations, explicit modeling, and Ss choice.
A2 Ss wait to be told what to do, teacher directed lectures, lack of time to plan well
I also think re-evaluating current practices. Can we remove some of the things? Must we do everything? https://t.co/amE0mLPaWQ
A2: Not enough time and teaching given to our staff on these best practices. We must be better!
A3 allow learners to request the small group time after identifying need to know
If T's are exhausted at the end of the day, it's a good sign they're doing all the work. Shift opportunities to engage kids.
For a Pre-service teacher…you hit the nail on the head, Stephanie. https://t.co/H0HOQ9Uz7O
A2 I think that when a lesson is 100% teacher led it makes it hard for students to be engaged.
Secondary Ts should consider embracing the elementary "center" approach to differentiated learning.
Agreed! You worded this much better than I was trying to! https://t.co/KsqrW7MJp3
A3: DI in non-inquiry based lessons should include gradual release, high expectations, explicit modeling, and Ss choice.
exactly. Give them responsibility and let them enjoy it
A3: introduce, model, question to get students thinking for themselves as teacher becomes more of a facilitator than instructor
Let the students use their learning strengths to express themselves.
A3 think there needs to be conversation around what "direct instruction" really means anymore, so many associate with whole group
I'm exhausted at the end of the day, but because I'm always ON, ready for any S need, ensuring smooth process.
A3: 4 me DI is a way to present the concept and then leads to break off of small grps that is Ss led.
You have a great point, James. Sometimes encouragement is all they need. https://t.co/Z89dWBqmbb
A3: Ts role as a facilitator to student learning & comprehension of content. Be the Ss biggest cheerleader/motivator!
Maybe you could teach me what that means...in the DM!
A3: Direct instruction has it place and purpose...gradual release model
A3: direct instruction is necessary in small doses. Mini lesson then send kiddos off to practice repeat often
A3: Direct Instruction is useful for re-teaching a concept not grasped correctly or brand new content that is straight forward.
Just joining and new here. Elem. principal from Tx. A2: there is too much T talk and we need more S talk
Agreed! We are still teaching things we don't need to be...and you don't know what you don't know. https://t.co/HRiyKjiIBM
I also think re-evaluating current practices. Can we remove some of the things? Must we do everything? https://t.co/amE0mLPaWQ
A2: Not enough time and teaching given to our staff on these best practices. We must be better!
I really like GRR, but our school favors GANAG.
If it were truly a student-centered classroom DI would include the information directly conveyed from student discovery
A2: We often place traditional obstacles for students. We slow them down because we're not ready.
I like to call it facilitated direction not direct instruction
Yes, and they will remember if they were busy owning that learning https://t.co/p23CvjNS2s
At the end of the day it's the Ss who need to know how to use and apply the learning that takes place in school.
Good Ts make themselves obsolete. I tell Ts I evaluate, good teachers teach, great teachers let the kids teach them and each other
A3: I'm not sure direct instruction plays much of a role. Ss need a supported process to learn. Modelling & gradual release.
Bingo!! Ss need to be doing more of the talking & the 'doing'!!
A3 Teachers need to be there to support the students through there education.
completely agree. Major part make it direct then let them go with it
I definitely think it is important to remember MI's. Discussed lots in education classes in college last year.
For s's that prefer to get direct instruction, I'm thinking about doing weekly optional before school sessions. Thoughts?
So many times we skip the "we do." We do should occur in small groups. https://t.co/H9sHVzHcCY
A3- Teacher-directed should be short and used to model and teach new content- follow the gradual release mode- I do, we do, you do
Yes! "I do, We do, You do..." https://t.co/O3KeqWksQl
A3: Direct instruction has it place and purpose...gradual release model
Direct facilitation? Oh what a tangled web we weave...:)
A3 I believe the timing is essential. We do not want to take away inquiry and opportunity to construct meaning first
Right. They have to learn to fly. They never will if you keep trying to fly for them. https://t.co/myXw1eCkGN
exactly. Give them responsibility and let them enjoy it
A3: Love Flipped Classroom mod where DI can happen outside class at Ss pace need and hands-on time can start moment they arrive.
A3: Direct Instruction should be used but you definitely need some group discussion in there too. Ss attention span is only so long
A3 common language - community learning
Yes, people are being shy tonight, at least with me! :)
I like this and think "changing the question" becomes even more relevant, esp with tech in the hands.
Agreed. Also, ‘we do’ can be peer led. Again..empowerment. Thanks! https://t.co/DEwYhgGkdd
So many times we skip the "we do." We do should occur in small groups. https://t.co/H9sHVzHcCY
A3- Teacher-directed should be short and used to model and teach new content- follow the gradual release mode- I do, we do, you do
A4: Opens classrooms to resources not available w/o. Best use of tech is to research, share, and reflect IMO.
Admin observations should focus more on how the kids are engaged and less about the what the T does/doesn't do. Focus on the kids!
it's so important to have discussion in classes. It makes them engaged.
A4: Tech integration = student-centered learning when providing multiple opportunities to access content & demonstrate proficiency
A4: Student blogging is on my soon to do bucket list. I can only imagine huge gains in writing engagement!
A3: DI is important in our lower grades, but instruction is owned when Ss get to it on their own. All for DI but LIMIT it.
A4: Tech (Google forms, etc.) can allow all Sts to participate rather than just a few being called on in class.
A4 tech integration gives students so much more freedom & options for differentiated instruction
A4 tech allows Ts to have faster feedback in the learning process as well as give opportunities for 1:1/small group instruction
A4 tech is great - but content drives tech and technology is for S use to improve a task ... Not a program
A4: Tech. Integration allows Ss to be active learners. Tech. allows Ss to connect their learning to their interest.
We’re on Q4 if you’re just joining us… Please respond.. We value your thoughts and knowledge. https://t.co/4VAT9SnLzs
I remember there were eight, I haven't mentioned them much lately, but I do think they have value.
A3: DI should be used during an introductory or to re-teach class misconceptions.
A4: Tech can play a key role. It provides authentic & 21st century methods of gathering info, collaborating, and sharing learning.
A4 - Tech opens up the world to students. Needs good pedagogy behind it though!
It was big in my teachers' college program in 2006-07. I wonder why there is no MI chat?
the less control I think I have, the more control I actually have. I'm more attuned to what's happening- where the breakdown is
A3: Direct instruction has its place, but it has to be balanced with time for inquiry & collaboration.
Student blogging and other 2.0 platforms for reflecting and responding is a gr8 tech int.
A2: When teachers approach each lesson hoping for specific answers and outcomes, students don't take ownership. Why would they?
I have s's share research w/ small groups/class on daily basis. Reteaching concepts encourages learning.
A4 tech integration multiplies the teacher! Helps with facilitation and allows for more choice and differentiation
Yes, it is critical for T to gather data during this time to note where S are & who needs more support/enrichment
I agree failure needs 2 be seen as part of the learning process. I love this Simon Sinek quote https://t.co/1NMsYLE8Lx
Yes! Focus on Ss strengths is so imprt. my Ps did for me. I try to find each of Ss strgths & share https://t.co/zOjw0fbpmX
Let the students use their learning strengths to express themselves.
A:4 considering how much tech is evolving, including it is a given. Apps, blogs, videos, power point, so many ways.
A:4 considering how much tech is evolving, including it is a given. Apps, blogs, videos, power point, so many ways.
tech integration is only effective if it's utilized to enhance the learning experience, not just incorporate tech
Teaching others is key. Great practice.
A4: All of my Ss are on Twitter, blog, and Youtube this semester. Wondering why we didn't go to authentic digital audience sooner.
A4 - tech allows greater independence. Ss can dig into a topic rather than depend on teacher.
A4 so powerful. we went into an AB museum virtually instead of using pictures
I agree with you on this & might add that the right combo creates some great opps for transitions in activities
A4: Tech integration in the classroom needs to closely mirror and reflect what exists beyond the classroom. &
A3: Students need to have some role in their learning in order to keep them engaged.
A4: tech integration can allow you to differentiate for every student -you multiply your effectiveness by meeting Ss where they are
We need to let Ss own the tech. Our job- protect and facilitate. Of course, we still teach them, but these kiddos know how 2 roll
A4: Tech integration should not be but just
as soon as students see failure and a new beginning and not an end the better. It's not over
A4: college and career ready involves aptitude in extending learning and showing knowledge via technology
Agreed. I still feel that way - in my 30s.
Thanks for great topic tonight. Signing out early tonight but your voices/thoughts/viewpoints are appreciated
A4: Tech integration is HUGE. Ss use it as a learning tool & resource as they see fit.
In , tech has already played a role in my learning. Pinning 4 my future class is helpful & has already helped me make WS
Hi Michelle! Glad you made it to https://t.co/27ZweYymVF
Just joining and new here. Elem. principal from Tx. A2: there is too much T talk and we need more S talk
100% agreed. Life connections are engaging situations that our Ss will remember for a lifetime. https://t.co/zxvs54IMGo
A4: Tech integration in the classroom needs to closely mirror and reflect what exists beyond the classroom. &
I always ask what would make it more interesting for them. I want them to be invested.
As usual, lots of great going on tonight!
A4- Tech. can increase engagement and deepen understanding when S take ownership of research and learning about selected topics
A4:Tech Integration provides opportunities for universal access in many cases. Highly engaging and way more avenues for ownership.
A5: Find out what the underlying factor is. It may be that they need reinforcement of content to boost their ownership of learning.
A4- Tech allows for Ss to choose a way to show and share the knowledge they have acquired and in turn motivates them to learn.
A5: model taking ownership of your own learning. Help them see how it fits their world/goals. They have to FEEL the benefit
A4 Tech allows for differentiation like google classroom! and multiple intelligence's.
If S's have real audience, they want it to be good. When S's turn it in to T, they want it good enough. https://t.co/XCMisV2n16
A4: Student blogging is on my soon to do bucket list. I can only imagine huge gains in writing engagement!
A5: When students do not own the learning, work on relationship. Get to know students, find out what motivates them. Be involved.
Tech integration is awesome for quick feedback through formative assessment . Love for growth portfolio.
A5 - If they don't own it, it needs to be presented differently. A different connection needs to be made for them.
Q5: Back up the train and make sure they know their end in mind. Assess what's going wrong where and try and move forward.
A5: I remind them that I care & want them to succeed. And I remind them how proud they are of themselves when they succeed.
A4 without question tech allows students other avenues to tailor their understanding of content in a myriad of ways
A5 small group and conference - 2X10 - why are they resisting ?
Lots of great minds in here. Honored to be among ya'll
Exactly. It shouldn't be an add on, it should fit with the lesson.
A5 instilling confidence in each student is the best way to get them excited about their learning!
A4: Tech integration involves students in their learning. They can find answers and don't need to rely on Ts for all information.
A5 students not taking ownership makes me be reflective. Is what I'm asking them to do meaningful? Authentic? Purposeful?
A4: Edtech is a big component of a student-centered, inquiry-based "maker" classroom.
is an option and the feelings it creates must be explored.
A5: Use the tried and true Reinforcing Effort strategy. Needs to be a tool in every Ts toolbelt.
I always go back to relationships. Ss will work when someone genuinely interacts with them.
A5: Find ways to connect Ss to the learning they are doing & personalize it. If Ss don't see value, they will never truly own it.
This is why and teams must work together!
Relationship first! Learning follows! https://t.co/wgLo4ywYYy
I always go back to relationships. Ss will work when someone genuinely interacts with them.
A5- Student goal setting and tracking are important in assisting S to increase ownership of learning.
A5: Maybe pull them aside after class and help them realize their contributions are important to the class too.
A5: conference and goal setting. Ss make plan for how to accomplish
A5 Some students just need extra processing time!
A5: Time and an authentic audience often cures most situations when a child doesn't take ownership of his or her learning.
Absolutely right!! https://t.co/9mpdnajwy0
I always go back to relationships. Ss will work when someone genuinely interacts with them.
A5: You have to figure out the "why." Find what motivates the S. Create a culture of high expectations. https://t.co/uN70Vt4bLr
Yes! My is all kid-centered and kid-driven! Great point!
self assessments with purpose are good. Learners need opportunity to play feedback!
A4: Gives students a new way of learning material and doing assignments.
This might be the most meaningful response tonight. We also need to take ownership of HOW we are doing it https://t.co/YJwWayMG67
A5 students not taking ownership makes me be reflective. Is what I'm asking them to do meaningful? Authentic? Purposeful?
A5: Personalize S learning to include something they value. Connection their interests to what you want them to learn. They'll buy
Self assessment gets Ss thinking about their learning and where they can focus their practice.
asking for input is so important
I wonder how often do our Ss do authentic research
A5: In business, people will work for you once they understand the and the . Could this apply to Ss?
A5: You as the teacher need to make students feel comfortable sharing answers. An environment of support & learning is the best!
I'm using something similar in my Action Research! We've been graphing self reflection towards our targets.
A5. Make the connection to content and real world purpose. Answer the question:why does this matter?
how can we train Ts to do this better?
A5: don't give up. Keep approaching it from different angles. Even if it doesn't happen now, the impact may come.
Make the learning meaningful
Love these! Self-Assmt is powerful for Ss to understand where they were, where they are now, & where they need to go!
I agree. Should there even be two separate depts? Tech is a part…huge part of the curriculum today. https://t.co/IcYJCceUHQ
This is why and teams must work together!
Agreed! We have to start .
A5: make genuine connections, first. Gradually help them see the benefits of owning their own learning...that's powerful.
A5: If the student isn't owning their learning then I ask why? Have I given them opportunity to do so? Have connections been made?
Connections and a growth mindset https://t.co/UK15eDLiFm
A5: make genuine connections, first. Gradually help them see the benefits of owning their own learning...that's powerful.
A5: ask other Ss for advice; they relate to each other.
Yes! & must not be mutually exclusive! Learning leads successful tech integration.
A must in the evolution to a S-centered learning environment https://t.co/ayEp5uS9pR
Self assessment gets Ss thinking about their learning and where they can focus their practice.
Q5, I conference with Ss on a regular basis. Typically the lack of ownership is caused by frustration. Make learning accessible. Q5
I do think students have a hard time self assessing. Needs to be modeled and worked on. Very useful when done right!
A5-Talk to students about what you notice and ask them what's going on? A simple conversation can go a long way.
We can't quantify knowledge into silos. Nature is interdisciplinary.
unfortunately some schools don't have the funding
A5: Connect the learning to Ss interest and frame the learning around solving a real problem
Prompt, relevant feedback is essential for s's and helps to develop positive rapport w/ them.
A5 My Ss have complicated lives and will be off task at times, and for me that is ok.
And , , Quizizz, and Zaption, etc. Lots of easy formative tools out there!
Going back to the teacher… Yes, Michelle. What is it that I am not doing. That’s our job. https://t.co/uLkaWljiWb
A5: If the student isn't owning their learning then I ask why? Have I given them opportunity to do so? Have connections been made?
so many great thoughts tonight!
oh wow...this made me pause for a moment. You're right. Thank you
A6 - Read Learn Like a Pirate by . Loaded with easy to impliment strategies!
. So true! School artificially silos learning into subject areas.
A6: The more choice and voice, the better!
And all teachers need to be on board with it as well not just the curriculum writers. :)
A6: Do not be afraid to let Ss explore their own learning. Provide an atmosphere that is open to various learning styles.
A5: Goal setting and making instruction meaningful are keys to making students own their learning.
honestly. Ask them questions. And let them ask you questions Work together for the best possible education
Individualize the learning
A4: Technology enhances instruction..The most important instructional element in the classroom is the teacher
This is a limited area that we need to push more. Research can be motivating in itself if given choices https://t.co/4WmL4GahBW
Feedback bridges the gap between where S's are & where they need to be. Grades are judgement. https://t.co/qVlUuMGSeq
self assessments with purpose are good. Learners need opportunity to play feedback!
Authentic research gives Ss ownership of their knowledge. Something to share with others.
We are building in more with our research and informational writing units, but yes definitely not enough.
is here every Sun night (10ESt, 9CSt, 8MST, 7PST). I only wish our friend in England could chat with us live too.
A6: Give Ss a choice at their projects, let them utilize tech 2 make it more fun, & build relationships w/Ss to instill confidence!
A6: For a student-centered classroom, implement PBL, UDL, more student discourse & less teacher talk.
A6: Observe other classrooms, watch Periscopes, participate in EdChats, build PLN's. Don't be afraid to ask for ideas.
I hear ya. But it's a dance. What the T does is important to why/what the Ss do. I say, it should be both. https://t.co/TxwlDSMSKY
Admin observations should focus more on how the kids are engaged and less about the what the T does/doesn't do. Focus on the kids!
HEY Give and I some ideas… What would you all like to chat about in the future?
A5: All students have a "growth mindset" when placed in the right environment. Do WE have the grit to create that environment?.
A6: observe others who have Ss centered classrooms. Pick one thing to do well. Build from there
A5: It would be important to get to the root of why they are not taking initiative... possibly frustration, don't understand...
Thanks for an awesome chat! I have to check out early for I have more homework to do.
Yes Ss should learn that they have a big role in the learning
A6: Also, allow s's to be a part of developing the process for accomplishing goal. I have s's help me design lesson regularly.
A6: observe other Ts who have student-centered classes...they need to see it, firsthand...then, bring that back to their own class
So much of it is still very Victorian from the "schedule" to the bells.
Q6. Know it's okay to fail. Try new things, ask students for constructive criticism. They want to be heard and help grow the class.
Here are the questions once again. We are on our final Q6.
A6 - don't be afraid to let go a bit. Become the facilitator or coach and let Ss loose!
So true, Tom. We need a mindset change…that’s for sure. https://t.co/Im1Vg0MnBV
So much of it is still very Victorian from the "schedule" to the bells.
A6: Stand back more often. Spend less time instructing/leading & give Ss more time to practice/explore/collaborate as they learn.
A6: encourage them to make changes - slow, steady, and sure - in changing their class into one that's truly student-centered.
How do you step back as a teacher
Ha! Great ed-minds think alike! Just recommended this book, too!
Yes. The why behind the what. Get interested in their thinking, not the answer. https://t.co/2sKSCzCsQh
A2: When teachers approach each lesson hoping for specific answers and outcomes, students don't take ownership. Why would they?
So many are used to depending on the teacher. It is tough to break that thought pattern!
A6 for a more student centered classroom it is important for teachers and students to have a mutual trust established
I'd love to hear some great ideas on ways Ts are seamlessly incorporating SEL in the academic setting
A6: Try PBL/PBAs as a starter for student-centered learning.
If there's only 1 right answer we need to ask better Qs https://t.co/2sKSCzCsQh
A2: When teachers approach each lesson hoping for specific answers and outcomes, students don't take ownership. Why would they?
I hope you all have a marvelous week and find more ways to help Ss take ownership of their own learning!
Q6: Trust yourself and your students! Know where you're headed, let the Ss help be the GPS
Classroom management, data management, developing student leadership
Exactly what I was thinking. Also take ideas away and list them in order of impact. Implement 1 at a time. https://t.co/gAFghAC6Jv
A6: observe other Ts who have student-centered classes...they need to see it, firsthand...then, bring that back to their own class
A6: Who is doing the most work? Asking the most questions? If it's the Ss, it's a student-centered classroom.
. Sad that we continue to hold onto an artificial structure that doesn't make sense now
The progressive approach really breaks down these archaic practices.
Thank you for taking your own time to lead this discussion!
Also teach students how to become independent learners.
A6: they observe; they bring back ideas; admin constantly encourages change to S-C class & reminds T that change isn't "overnight"
Have faith in Ss. If you let go in a planned way, step back as sage on the stage into a facilitator role, you'll see success. Q6
A6. Sorry for joining so late! Admins need to join this conversation by fostering opportunities for risk.
A6 SS 1st have to feel it is a safe environment & able to work with others. Then the magic happens!
A3: If instruction is student centered then lessons may be different for each student. Some may be behind, some ahead
Agree! "Here's what I found out about you as a reader. Here's what I'd like you to try next..."
A6+: I think the idea of letting go "a bit" is key. It doesn't have to be dramatic but every little bit helps.
Agreed. T's are decision makers for what the environment looks like. It's okay to let go of some things to engage S's.
If you can hear yourself talk more than the Ss, well… https://t.co/ow7bHdurXB
A6: Who is doing the most work? Asking the most questions? If it's the Ss, it's a student-centered classroom.
Off to get some sleep! Thank you & . Have a great week!!!
Great point here and a good way to identify a student-centered classroom, I think. https://t.co/jAJvRwOcOr
A6: Who is doing the most work? Asking the most questions? If it's the Ss, it's a student-centered classroom.
A4: Tech can help those Ss progress, when direct instruction can't take place. The world is flat
Yes! Our 2nd graders created & delivered PPT presentations for peers on informational reports!
A3 DI is important but should be limited to allow Ss time to discover
Thanks for joining and for your contributions to the chat https://t.co/qKSbNlgx97
Thank you for taking your own time to lead this discussion!
Inspired and ready for a great week. Thank you and ! Have a fabulous week.
A6: implement one change at a time. Every 15 min get Ss engaging with content. Then try 10. Then 5. Etc
Observing other Ts has shaped my own thinking and teaching!
Now to just get the policy makers on board.
Russell….thanks for your loyal support and contributions to our chats https://t.co/bCH4raFM8F
Off to get some sleep! Thank you & . Have a great week!!!
Start small and work up! Ss often need the control to be turned over slowly as well.
I like asking why school runs from Sept to June (in NJ) as a test.
Thanks for helping me join my 1st chat. I loved it. Good night.
Me too….Thanks, Michelle. Inspire on, girl! You got this! https://t.co/bcIfQMo5Cm
Inspired and ready for a great week. Thank you and ! Have a fabulous week.
A6: Allow the S to lead their learning. Give S more talk time. Step back and see where they go with what you give them.
Great chat tonight! I enjoyed learning with some of my PC Educators . Great thoughts!
such a good conversation to read & participate in! thank you!
Wondering what would be attendance
I hope you'll check out next week! https://t.co/wzoum7xQsx
Thanks for helping me join my 1st chat. I loved it. Good night.
Thanks everyone. Good night
A6: The greatest change in my career was when I took a step back and handed the keys to the engines of innovation - the kids.
You betcha… Hope you’ll come back next week, James. https://t.co/ma6JuQWaBO
Great chat tonight! I enjoyed learning with some of my PC Educators . Great thoughts!
are you for or against Ts scripting these questions. Unnatural. But a start?
I enjoy it. My week officially starts with . You guys are great!!! https://t.co/mZQqRLMrOY
Russell….thanks for your loyal support and contributions to our chats https://t.co/bCH4raFM8F
Off to get some sleep! Thank you & . Have a great week!!!
A6-Create an atmosphere of respect & trust by showing the Ss their voice matters by involving them in planning and problem solving.
Scaffolding for teachers. https://t.co/rL2AbHkQNt
are you for or against Ts scripting these questions. Unnatural. But a start?
It was not only a good move for you but for your Ss. Way to go, John. https://t.co/OIa6w2ImkD
A6: The greatest change in my career was when I took a step back and handed the keys to the engines of innovation - the kids.
We've had great success visiting Ts both within our division & neighboring divisions https://t.co/F6hxd6QCbd
Observing other Ts has shaped my own thinking and teaching!
Lots of instructional coaches here tonight. Hope to see those folks in and
They&others need 2 be ok. Imagine changing summer vaca
A3 wondering how we unlearn the reliance on DI specifically at the HS level
Research states that it is the number one form of PD for classroom Ts. https://t.co/gFeFmabywh
We've had great success visiting Ts both within our division & neighboring divisions https://t.co/F6hxd6QCbd
Observing other Ts has shaped my own thinking and teaching!
Same... Would it be worth the time? I do this as test review and sometimes have many, sometimes none.
Now…Go set the world on fire tomorrow and empower our future. Until next time… Thanks, collaborators.
what is daunting isnt developing the Q, it's responding to the Ss answer-that is hard to prepare for https://t.co/TrLdREyRQY
FOR-at first. In order to craft skill, Ts need reference questions to use, written before the lesson, not as they're teaching.
Given the choice, HS Ss have a hard time adjusting to a S-centered role b/c they've followed the other road their entire "career"
And tiring the teacher did all of the heavy lifting
Great topic and conversation. Thanks! !
fellow Podcaster!! Tell me more. Have you checked out ?
Or google gives us a perspective of the answer
thanks for the invite to a fabulous chat. Every Sunday? Same time?
And it's hard for Ts to teach different
A5: Ts need to make sure that a S gets a year worth of growth for a year of instruction.
It is. But those who try see the benefits!
Tough sell for HS Ss but I'm sure if they value it they'll show
Thanks for a great first chat. Have a great week educators!
Research states effective Ts can create 1.5 yrs of growth in one year. If not, the gap never closes https://t.co/16oU5JSyBN
A5: Ts need to make sure that a S gets a year worth of growth for a year of instruction.
Tying their results to their efforts
And can't be discouraged if they try something and it doesn't work.
A6: Ts need to explore other classrooms. Reach out to see what;s working.
