Formative assessment is anything that I can see to observe mastery of skills. It is a problem, activity, intervention reteach, conversation, peer explaining to a peer, discussion on who is correct, explanation of their process, etc. Anything where you know that they know. #bfc530

Good morning everyone. Formative assessment in my class helps me to see where my students are and guides me in creating experiences to help them grow. Constant checks. #BFC530
In my class this yr, it will be a lot of observation. I take notes & I keep all my notes organized in a @GoogleForEdu google sheet so I can reference it to see progress, when writing report cards & goals. #BFC530
Writing is the ultimate formative assessment. It's a process and it's a cycle. Ideally, there are no final papers, just new versions. There should always be room for feedback, reflection, revision. That doesn't work very well with grades and report cards, but so be it. #bfc530

Sometimes a quick survey in Google forms gives me the info I need to move forward. Students don't really think about it as a formative assessment, but I do. And those who don't complete the survey, or only offer a minimal response -- those are the ones who need me now! #BFC530
When I was in the classroom my favorite method of formative assessment were thumbs up, down, sideways. My Ss were free to show me the sign throughout my lesson. It helped to clear misconceptions and identify who needed immediate support through small group ints. #BFC530
From a literacy perspective, one type of formative assessment is purposeful kid watching. Observing the reading behaviors of Ss in order to identify the next steps in your delivery of instruction to best move them forward as strategic readers. #bfc530
Hi #bfc530 Michelle, 3rd gr T from Maine. I do an exit ticket daily in math and use the data to support intervention for those who struggled with the content. We use SBG so they know they are working toward mastery and have time to build skill yearly rather than a pass/fail now.

I think teaching requires extreme flexibility. You can’t be rigid and expect to succeed when you work with humans. That isn’t teaching, it’s managing, and that isn’t our work. #bfc530
Learning is not just about the opportunities we create for our learners but also how our learners take advantage of those opportunities. We can act as a catalyst but if learners don’t ignite than it is all for naught. #bfc530

Exactly - and so many ways to do it. One of my favorites is to play a "match game" - each student gets a card with a term or definition, and kids walk around to find their card's "match". Gets them up and walking around - they don't know they are being assessed! #bfc530

Formative assessment done well, regularly, can be transformative for the student and the teacher. It really has much to do with learning together, learning from each other and growing. #bfc530
Our formative assessment comes in the form of observations & conversations while Ss are problem solving. Orange marker is me while talking & clarifying with each group. These obs help me decide what to assign for independent practice & when we're ready for formal eval.

I'm attempting to grade via SBG but by using a traditional grade book. It's a lot of work, but their letter grade is based off of the skills mastered. I'm definitely learning through this process. #bfc530

it would be nice to get out to the mindset that a certain amount of grades NEED to be in the gradebook. That's a specific hill to climb though. #bfc530

In theory aren’t all grades formative? We need to change the teacher mentality in that we cannot go back and change the grade when the kids gains new knowledge. #bfc530

I don't have many grades, but they are truly based on mastery, and updated weekly on the students' newest achievements. Also, I have yet to use a rubric this year (don't bash me). #bfc530

It seems like it is often an attempt at making sure teachers are providing enough opportunities for students to demonstrate learning. But it's backwards. We shouldn't be trying to guide teaching practices through grade books rules. #bfc530

Agreed... #sped teachers do not appreciate the short notice, but we don't normally adapt the work down, just give additional resources so they can rise to the bar that is set. #bfc530
This was Monday. The concrete walls between the pillars are normally not there. They are raised to prevent floor damage. There's a 12 ft wide wooden boardwalk already underwater that's normally about 2 ft above the river. #bfc530
I have a little Disney notebook that is glued to my hand. I'm constantly observing and jotting. From behavior to the lace of each student to noting who gets it. I also do thumbs up before I move on to the next thing. #bfc530
No. Trying to impact teaching through grade requirements is like helping students to become writers by telling them they need to use a certain number of commas and periods. We need to support best practices in teaching directly and offer effective PD. #bfc530

When we have a clear target we can track daily. I try to encourage teachers to look for evidence all the time while they are circulating. We use tracking tablets where they can track targets in order to analyze who their instruction is working for and who it is not. #BFC530
