  • DeatraLee_Edu Oct 23 @ 10:31 PM EDT
A0: Deatra Lee, Tech TOSA @puhsd, I took classes at RCC during the summer to meet general ed requirements. It was positive. #IEedchat

  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A0:Tom Ashley TOSA Tech Coach @puhsd. Community College for me was what high school should have been. Transferred from RCC to Cal #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A0: Attended for less than a year. Frustrated w/not getting classes I wanted. Wished I stuck it out though #IEedchat
  • joshjusd Oct 23 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Josh, i attended cc for my emt course good experience @MtSAC #ieedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Roberto Guzman Maestro @CMIPerris I took some courses at Chaffey and Mt. Sac but spent most of my time at a 4 year @UofDallas #ieedchat

A0: Chris Lara 8th grade history. Went to Chaffey CC after looking at the cost of college & loved the experience I got out of it #IEedchat
  • MRoarkPMP Oct 23 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A0) Michael/Jurupa.Went to local CC, early 00’s, before web classes were worked out|Never finished AS|Last class bad schedule time #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A0: Jed Tech TOSA / math geek @HeritageHSPats @puhsd I went to 4 year right away, wanted residential experience, away from home. #IEedchat
  • joshjusd Oct 23 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A1) I can't think of a good reason to get rid of either, a ton come to mind to expand both #ieedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A1: I think both have their places; AP can prep you for a possible major in the subject where D.E. is getting a jump on CC #IEedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A1:We should keep all options open, but personally I would rather take a CC course than a test to let me get credit #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Oct 23 @ 10:35 PM EDT
A1: I don't see why you can't say AP & DE are the same. Doesn't AP count as college credit when you score a 4 or 5 on AP exam? #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Oct 23 @ 10:35 PM EDT
A1: I know its controversial but schools should put way more energy into Dual Enrollment. If I had to select one, I am for DE. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Oct 23 @ 10:36 PM EDT
A0: went to a CC after attending a 4 yr-starting a family, stopping- thinking I needed to catch up-became inspired to teach there #IEedchat

Q2: Should Community Colleges offer bachelor's degrees in high-demand career fields such as Industrial Automation/Dental Hygiene? #IEedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:37 PM EDT
Completely agree w you @AshleyMSJC5 some Ss need to mature and catch up to themselves and then there ready #IEedchat
    In reply to @AshleyMSJC5, @MathButler, @HeritageHSPats, @puhsd, @AshleyMSJC5
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:37 PM EDT
A1: Dual Enrollment has tons of benefits. Some places don't have CC nearby-so AP makes sense there as only option. #ieedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:38 PM EDT
A2:The Ca Master Plan for Higher Ed(1960) is old but has wisdom. CCs should approach 4year degrees w/caution but SHOULD offer them #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Oct 23 @ 10:38 PM EDT
A2 I think it's a great idea. Would allow more Ss to finish their program than get mired in transfer snafus that derail them #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:38 PM EDT
CSU and UC have pushed back on this trend... #IEedchat #turfwar
    In reply to @ieedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:38 PM EDT
A2: I think they could. It would provide more options for Ss, especially those w/family obligations at home #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A1 cont'd - when compared one against the other - it's Dual Enrollment by a nose for me. #IEedchat
  • judykaylane Oct 23 @ 10:39 PM EDT
A1: like what I hear about the Dual Enrollment classes. My daughter did well w/AP but not for all and a rough road, things change #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Oct 23 @ 10:33 PM EDT
Q1: CA expanded the use Dual Enrollment to develop seamless pathways from HS to CC to College. Should D.E. replace AP courses? #IEedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:40 PM EDT
A2:It becomes a question of what is best for the Ss, do they need to take Lit and Poli Scie to be a better Dental Hyg #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Oct 23 @ 10:40 PM EDT
A1: Dual Enrollment because credit for AP courses depends on one exam. #IEedchat
    • ieedchat - Moderator Oct 23 @ 10:33 PM EDT
Q1: CA expanded the use Dual Enrollment to develop seamless pathways from HS to CC to College. Should D.E. replace AP courses? #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A2: I need more detail here - what does Bachelor's degree entail, what'd it be like at CC? Not against it, just want more info. #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Oct 23 @ 10:41 PM EDT
A2: I’m kind of middle of the road on this one. Looking forward to reading the responses #IEedchat
  • ieedchat - Moderator Oct 23 @ 10:42 PM EDT
Q3:CCs rely on a single test score to place Ss into college level or remedial courses. Should multiple placement measures be used? #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A2 cont'd... does this change anything in requirements with accreditation with the institution too? Is it sustainable for the CC? #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Oct 23 @ 10:42 PM EDT
A2: CCs should be offering specialized bachelor's degrees. It's about the students & not about protecting a 4 year college. #IEedchat
  • MRoarkPMP Oct 23 @ 10:42 PM EDT
Do they use the same curriculum? Different approach? I haven’t had the opportunity to shadow either. Didn’t have them in my HS #IEedchat
    In reply to @Chad_Shaner
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A3: A well thought out Multiple Measure tool should be a far better predictor of S success than a single test like the Accuplacer. #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
    A3: Yes #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A3 I've always detested a single test placement. A single test never reveals the true measure of one's achievement levels #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A3: I think so, or give option to retest #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
Many sharp HS Ss aren't ready for the Accuplacer and can become bogged down in remedial classes... #IEedchat
    In reply to @ieedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:43 PM EDT
A3 cont'd I think the harder question is what other measures make sense. Hard to have something standard that scales. #IEedchat
  • joshjusd Oct 23 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A3) I think the barrier of remedial classes is bigger than placement criteria #ieedchat
  • MRoarkPMP Oct 23 @ 10:44 PM EDT
    That’s a good point, Jedidiah. #IEedchat
    In reply to @MathButler
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:44 PM EDT
A3:Ss grades, SAT and or ACT with a placement exam should be considered. It will give a better idea of the Ss potential #IEedchat
  • jswilliams Oct 23 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A3: Governor Brown signs bill to transform remediation in community colleges. https://t.co/VkK8wHvYBU #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Oct 23 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A3: I don’t mind it. when I took the placement tests I was simply relieved about no SAT or essays #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Oct 23 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A3: agree with @Chad_Shaner & @MathButler. Should have multiple measures, but which ones. #IEedchat

  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:45 PM EDT
Maybe the accuplacer (or similar) could be first filter. Those on bubble could submit to a free response prompt of sorts. #IEedchat

  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:47 PM EDT
Honest question: Can the accuplacer be taken mult. times (like other standardized assessments for college entry)? Anyone in #IEedchat know?
  • KochCarisa Oct 23 @ 10:47 PM EDT
#IEedchat could someone RT the question we are on. Just jumping in now. Carisa from the high desert.

  • Chad_Shaner Oct 23 @ 10:48 PM EDT
A4 yes I like them, college is too expensive to waste $$ on "exploring" Most Ss don't realize the impact of that future debt #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A4: I think pathways are good guides for students. Wish I had that. I just wasted time at CC and then bit bullet and applied 4 yr #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:49 PM EDT
A4: Many Ss were lost in wilderness of CC unstructured environment in old days. Guided pathways provides needed support/structure #IEedchat
  • MathButler Oct 23 @ 10:50 PM EDT
A4: Yes if money/time is tough. No it's nice to expand ur own learning in unexpected places. I value my exploratory learning. #IEedchat
  • MRoarkPMP Oct 23 @ 10:50 PM EDT
A3)What if they do a single test, but incorporate SAT/ACT/ASVAB/Etc? #IEedchat
  • DeatraLee_Edu Oct 23 @ 10:50 PM EDT
    A4: Yes, I think Ss need/appreciate the support. #IEedchat

Q4: Are you in favor of Guided Pathway Initiatives that force structure on Ss who used to explore by taking a variety of classes? #IEedchat
  • Chrisjlara24 Oct 23 @ 10:51 PM EDT
A4: I say no. A semester or two of exploring is better than being forced into something you discover quickly you don’t want #IEedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:51 PM EDT
A4:Guided structure sounds like a better alternative for Ss that need to stay on a path to a future job or career #ieedchat
  • judykaylane Oct 23 @ 10:51 PM EDT
not sure what this means exactly but force structure does not sound ok to me, other hand Ss need structure, I did #IEedchat

  • MRoarkPMP Oct 23 @ 10:53 PM EDT
A4)If you signed up for a pathway, you were probably attracted to the field|Even if you change, still can go in related occupation #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A5: I think 1 or 2 years free tuition could be helpful to encourage Ss to avoid predatory non-profit colleges & transfer to CS/UC #IEedchat
  • AshleyMSJC5 Oct 23 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A5: One drawback is that Ss need "skin in the game" or they won't take college seriously. Plus, $46 isn't too pricey. #IEedchat
  • rguztec Oct 23 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A5:Pro, all Ss are given equal opportunity to succeed and financial strain is no longer reason to not go. Con, it will be crowded #IEedchat
  • JSynnott1 Oct 23 @ 10:54 PM EDT
A5: Pro - More access, Con - Who pays? #IEedchat
  • Chad_Shaner Oct 23 @ 10:54 PM EDT
