It's been 17 years since I had to really work math problems, but a group of students arguing the best way to solve a problem and giving each other guidance and feedback would work wonders #teachnvchat

A1: Number talks and accountable talk stems are one way I enjoyed hearing Ss critique each other's math #teachNVchat
  • SaraHolm15 Mar 22 @ 10:40 PM EDT
Yep. Maybe best practices weren't a thing yet in rural VT in the 80s? .... Thank goodness they are now! (and I had loads of really wonderful teachers so I know they knew all of their best practices) #teachnvchat

A1 it’s been a lot of time working on the culture in the climate of the classroom so the children can respectfully could critique the thinking of others #teachNVchat
  • NVCoreAdvocates Mar 22 @ 10:41 PM EDT
I agree Ryan - Number Talks are a great way to get those conversations going and model those stems! #teachNVchat

  • SaraHolm15 Mar 22 @ 10:43 PM EDT
Hi Michael! Thanks for staying up late. I agree that the culture of the community has to be in place for students to take risks and share and give & receive feedback productively. #teachnvchat

  • MichaelJDunlea Mar 22 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A1 it’s extremely important that you celebrate each S’s expertise no matter what it is, that’s the only way you can identify certain S’s who could help others, Every S needs to be valued so when They have to turn to a certain student for help they will #teachNVchat
  • LintonRJ Mar 22 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A2: Quality over quantity for math-instead of giving Ss lots of problems to solve, give them one problems and 30 minutes to productively struggle with it, possibly with multiple ways of solving it #teachNVchat
  • AndersonEdTech Mar 22 @ 10:45 PM EDT
Gamification can take tough problems and make them seem less tough for students and motivate to push through the touch #teachnvchat

Q2 a key Mathematical practice is to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. How do we help students do this beyond math? #teachNVchat
  • gwaddellnvhs Mar 22 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A great way to do this in math (SMP1) is to frame math work as 'rough drafts' instead of homework or practice. Rough drafts are always revised, and it puts the focus on revising our thinking, not finishing the assigned problems. #teachnvchat
    In reply to @teachNVACS
  • SJteaches Mar 22 @ 10:45 PM EDT
A2: i love to watch my seniors engage in productive struggle when faced with challenging literature or critical thinking. They know our class is a safe space to try and try again. #teachNVchat
  • tikaee Mar 22 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A2 We can help them through a more student centered approach and engagement strategies from things like Making Thinking Visible, performance tasks. We need to encourage Ss to question more and to take ownership of their learning to persevere. #teachNVchat

  • gwaddellnvhs Mar 22 @ 10:46 PM EDT
A2: Another way is @steve_leinwand's 2-4-2 idea of homework. 2 problems on today's topic, 4 probs on cumulative review, and 2 conceptual problems. At that point, every learner has something they can be successful with. #teachnvchat

  • SaraHolm15 Mar 22 @ 10:47 PM EDT
This year I've experimented with setting Ss up for multiple trials of things with the engineering design & design thinking processes explicitly so they (kindergarteners) know up front that they are going to be asked for multiple iterations. They sometimes love it #teachnvchat
  • LintonRJ Mar 22 @ 10:47 PM EDT
I like the idea of using the term "rough draft" for math! #teachnvchat

  • hawkeye_teach24 Mar 22 @ 10:50 PM EDT
A1: in first grade we talk about being respectful if we dont agree. We use sentence stems like "I respectfully disagree and then why." Use it when discussing fiction/NF, opinions of what is better etcp #teachNVchat

  • MichaelJDunlea Mar 22 @ 10:52 PM EDT
A3 I make sure of the mathematical practices are not buried into the lessons, but that they are things that we will refer to all throughout the year much like a spiral #teachNVchat
  • gwaddellnvhs Mar 22 @ 10:53 PM EDT
A3: I think it takes a constant, and sustained effort to bring in the relevant SMPs on a daily basis. Not every lesson should or can do every SMP, but several SMPs can practiced each day as long as the Tchr is intentional about incorporating them. #teachnvchat
