#G2Great 🙋♀️Hello G2Great Family! Glad to be part of this chat tonight, it is certainly a mission I have as a Literacy Coach (supporting Keller ISD in TX.)
Angie, a Grade 2 teacher from rural New Brunswick. Just home form parent teacher conferences. Think tonight will be a night to listen, reflect, & enjoy our wonderful learning community. Happy to just “be” tonight. #G2Great
A1. Culture of readers- T emails include "I'm reading..." S seesaw accounts talk about books... padlet of book talks. "My favorite books" on bulletin boards/posted in halls.
Supt and PD include talk about books!
#G2Great
A1 Our classrooms should be designed as an invitational celebration of books with ample time to read, discuss and share those books with peers from the earliest to later grades. #G2Great
A1: Classrooms all have libraries - current & relevant texts. Ss take home books/texts and read. Media center has books.
"Ask me what I'm reading?" is a theme in the building.
#G2Great

A1 A culture of readers includes motivated, engaged, lifelong readers who think deeply, respond thoughtfully, and participate in discussions and sharing about books with others. Readers set goals and have to-read lists. #G2Great
A1: It would look like a joyful, celebratory place in which all members of the school community share a common language surrounding books and reading. #g2great
A1: one of my favorite things in a school building is to see kids truly lost in books, like running into me in the hallway with their nose in a book, passing books to a friend in the hallway, excited to tell the adults in the building about books...that true excitement #g2great
A1 Creating a culture of readers would look and sound joyful. It’s not about force feeding books but allowing them to come alive in our classrooms for all kids. #G2Great
A1. Children buzz about books as much as they buzz about computer games or movies. Teachers are readers themselves, and practice what they preach. #g2great
A1: School and home literacy nights, collaboration with librarians, multi grade reading buddies, guest authors, large school funded classroom libraries, #G2Great
#G2great I will@be in NY mid June to end of June for TC Institutes- upper west side, just down the street from Bankstreet. Can’t wait to meet you and Kara in person!!
The use of our time reflects what we value said the sage @DrMaryHoward in our @bankstreetedu class tonight we gave time for our ss to read books that we chose for them according to their reading identities. #powerful. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1 Our classrooms should be designed as an invitational celebration of books with ample time to read, discuss and share those books with peers from the earliest to later grades. #G2Great
A1 Everyone should be given the time and space to read and then reflect on their reading. It's great when grades can collaborate around reading in some way. But it's also great when Ts collaborate around reading too. #g2great
A1 Ts sharing the books they're currently reading with Ss. Whole school books club with cross grade level chats. Lots of book talks by all in the school. We have a lending library in our caf---all participate in sharing books. #G2Great
A1:a culture of celebrating reading/books/literate lives of all stakeholders in the school. Not a culture of competition that devalues the JOY of reading, and instead reinforces reading/readers as levels and labels. #g2great

A1: a culture of readers is one that devours the written word in every genre. The atmosphere is filled with discussion and expression. Creativity fills the rooms and halls so that all are surrounded by the art/craft. #g2great
A1 A culture of readers includes motivated, engaged, lifelong readers who think deeply, respond thoughtfully, and participate in discussions and sharing about books with others. Readers set goals and have to-read lists. #G2Great
A1 Books and readers everywhere. The culture of the building is literacy-rich from themes to visitors. Exposure to all genres and celebrating our learners as authors and readers in their own right. #g2great
A1: ‘Buddy’ classes across grade levels. Book reviews posted on teachers doors, classroom walls, and in the hall. I have seen this on classroom doors: Mrs Powell: I just finished reading..., I am now reading... I plan to read...#G2Great
A1 I am reminded of Steven Layne, and how thrilling it is to be in a building where the secretary, custodian, principal, every teacher, and every student is talking about their current read while curating a list of next books. #G2Great
A1 Everybody reads. Buddies from different grade levels read to and with each other. Ts and Ss talk about, write about, post about what they're reading. Book talks in every classroom, school wide book club (includes families/caregivers), the campus library is the fav. #g2great
A1 Creating a culture of readers requires an unwavering resource & time commitment. We can’t say we want our kids to lead readerly lives & then refuse to provide the fuel. #G2Great
A1: School and home literacy nights, collaboration with librarians, multi grade reading buddies, guest authors, large school funded classroom libraries, #G2Great
A1: Ss stopping by lobby March Madness book bracket & having a conversation abt different books, staff recommending books to each other, Ss having lunch time book club chats with the principal, Ss choosing to make a newspaper all about reading, new books in the library #g2great
Thanks, Jenn. Yes, that’s the difference in my opinion. A culture of reading fosters a ‘readerly’life. Otherwise, Ss are just checking off boxes to do school without developing identities as readers with drive and passion that comes alive in and out of the classroom. #G2Great
#G2Great A1 Culture=community w/ a special bond brought together by common experiences. Culture of readers are spellbound by the power of words that transform, like a magical portal, you transport alongside fellow travelers who come back changed with tales to tell.
A2. Books: B. Quality and matching S interests as well as
mirrors, windows, and sliding doors! Represent the world, and build empathy. F, NF, Poetry, graphic novels - range. Books that Ss beg to read!
#G2Great
A2 WE are the first barrier when we refuse to make room in every single for kids to engage in that culture. TIME for reading should be the first thing that we put in the schedule. #G2Great
A1 Read alouds that reflect the ethnic/cultural makeup of the campus. Commitment to kids reading daily. Classroom libraries overflowing with books. Lots of overheard conversations about books. Big and little people always planning what they'll read next. ALL THE BOOKS. #g2great
Yes, our teachers at Bank Street have spoken quite a bit about this - teachers as readers and writers. This has inspired me to read more, read more widely, spend more time at the children's library, write more every day. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A1 It’’s always easier to know what books to share with kids if we - as teachers - are readers ourselves. So while I always look to others, I make sure I’m keeping up with reading as much as I can. #G2great
I’m just looking at my #G2Great screen and thinking about all of the educators who showed up tonight to celebrate inspiring a culture of readers. If we could bottle up this commitment and put it in every school, can you just imaging the impact it would have?
A2: I think one barrier is wondering if there’s a certain way to create readers, there’s not a right and wrong in my opinion. I let 6th graders read magazines, fiction, nonfiction, articles, the newspaper, not every adult picks up a move to read...teach them for life #g2great
My biggest barriers have been other adults who don’t see the value in what I do (IR, book talks, conferring, etc.) and think I’m taking the easy way out of teaching. I ignore and move along. They just don’t get it. #G2Great
A2: Pressure to meet grade-level assessments can cause teachers to feel that skill-based instruction must take priority. I made a personal decision to focus first on ensuring my students gained a love of books- even if they did not yet self-identify as readers. #g2great
Thanks, Jenn. Yes, that’s the difference in my opinion. A culture of reading fosters a ‘readerly’life. Otherwise, Ss are just checking off boxes to do school without developing identities as readers with drive and passion that comes alive in and out of the classroom. #G2Great
A2 High stakes testing is a barrier to cultivating a culture of readers. We must stop teaching to the test and start teaching kids and engaging them in authentic reading experiences. Then they will read more, improve their comprehension, and perform better on the test. #G2Great
A2. Great, diverse classroom libraries. Teachers feeling like there isn't enough time to "let them read!" I also worry about not enough choice of materials and then time to just read w/out having to DO something w/what they've read. No joy of just reading. #g2great
We always have to make choice Rachel and that means doing a little professional house cleaning - saying NO so we can say YES. I love that as an administrator you value that in your school!#G2Great
A2: Forced curriculum based on a basal reader and worksheets that go with them. Adults don’t fill out a worksheet after they read a great book, how can we ask kids to and still love to read?#G2Great
A1: Reading should be visible everywhere in a school, when you walk the halls it should be obvious that reading is valued by everyone - walls should be adorned with titles of books, authors, copies of books on the walls, pics of everyone reading & writing about reading #G2Great
A1 Read alouds that reflect the ethnic/cultural makeup of the campus. Commitment to kids reading daily. Classroom libraries overflowing with books. Lots of overheard conversations about books. Big and little people always planning what they'll read next. ALL THE BOOKS. #g2great
Q2. I think our testing culture is the greatest barrier. Teachers who are judged by DIBELS devote more time to drills to raise those scores. Teachers are under great pressure.
A2 When we put Ss in a box and say they can only read a certain level we create barriers that prevent Ss from becoming passionate, voracious readers. When we don't stock our classrooms with loads of books of all types we create barriers. #g2great
A2:BOOKS!! We have to value cultivating classroom libraries with authentic, relevant literature. Titles that are mirrors and windows for the Ss in front of us. #g2great
A2 Books everywhere! W/o resources that reflect the kids in front of us, there is little hope for creating this culture. We amplify this role when we engage kids in the process. #G2Great
Oh yes please THIS! What we put our attention on shows what we value Let’s value discrete questionable scores that tell us little about readers and put our sights on the act of READING that tells us VOLUMES about readers! #G2Great
And isn’t it just so frustrating? And your students are going to love reading and talking about their reading! Keep doing what you’re doing! #g2great and it is “easy” because it’s enjoyable and you’re making lifelong readers (you love what you do!)
At one time my district had DIBELS and it was DISMAL #G2Great because Ss thought reading was about speed. Our Ts were skillful it's not that they stressed the speed - it was implicit in the TASK
A2 Not being flexible is a barrier. Introduce new authors, celebrate established authors, always expand your classroom library don't stop, be flexible.
#g2great
People have put so many structures in place...assessments, programs, responses, all things pinterest to make readers. They just forget the reading part. #G2Great
A2: some barriers are: teachers who are not aware of current research as to what works for students, Ts who do not love reading, basals, admin who believe in testing, clsrms & schools that lack libraries,... #g2great
A2 One barrier that I work hard to overcome is helping students to learn to have joyful, meaningful conversations around quality texts. Discussing texts meaningfully, sharing ideas, fosters joy around books Ss love. I use this simple visual to help grow conversations #G2Great
Time used to be a barrier, until I saw the value. Now, I won’t skip IR for anything. Thankful for @DonorsChoose since I’ve had ten book projects funded over the years! #g2great
#G2Great A2 When we don’t prioritize self selected independent reading in our daily schedules and we don’t equip classrooms with well stocked classroom libraries
A1: A culture of readers are engaged, inspired, motivated, curious, and giving. The gifts readers give include modeling and discussing their passion for books they love. In turn, they are inviting more readers into their culture! #g2Great
A2 CULTURE implies that what we desire is pervasive. Creating a classroom culture is great, but we must broaden our lens with a schoolwide culture. Widen your scope! #G2Great
You can tell if there is a culture of reading present the minute you step foot in a classroom. This gem of a poster was greeting me as I came to observe in a first grade classroom yesterday. #g2great
The fact that #G2Great is already trending on Twitter shows how much reading is valued. But CULTURE of readers requires that we value it across an entire building and that’s where we have work to do. Let’s put away the worksheets and scripts and pull out the books that HOOK kids!
At one time my district had DIBELS and it was DISMAL #G2Great because Ss thought reading was about speed. Our Ts were skillful it's not that they stressed the speed - it was implicit in the TASK
This pic comes from one of my schools I work with from this fall... #keyrocks@ryjunge@AnnaUpah it was the quietest I’ve ever been because I wanted this picture so badly #g2great
Exactly! I won’t ever give it up, and I have all the proof I need each day. Give students access, time, and choice, and the results are just amazing! #G2Great
A2 Barriers include false expectations about levels, etc., and requirements for Ss to do things that readers in life do not do. Inauthenticity. #G2Great
You can tell if there is a culture of reading present the minute you step foot in a classroom. This gem of a poster was greeting me as I came to observe in a first grade classroom yesterday. #g2great
A2: In the past, there were some rooms that did not have a classroom library (gasp!) and then once everyone had one, there is always the money barrier of trying to make sure there is plenty of choice, equity, options, genres, baskets, shelves, etc. #g2great
A2.barriers are often placed in the libraries are the levels of books and limiting children to stay on their own "level". We need to allow children to explore a different variety of books. We must also provide opportunities throughout the day for reading #LitBankStreet#G2Great
You can tell if there is a culture of reading present the minute you step foot in a classroom. This gem of a poster was greeting me as I came to observe in a first grade classroom yesterday. #g2great
#G2Great A2 when we replace names and stories with # & % & levels vs matching books and writing experiences with Ss passions and curiosities when isolated Summative assessment replace t & s interaction & observation
A3: I would ask any teacher what they like to read. And where. And for how long. And which time of day. I would ask what would happen if someone took all of those choices away. How motivated would they be? #g2great
A2 Using Visual texts to help students engage meaning-making and confidence can help striving students engage written texts more purposefully. This visual can be used to help students engage visual and written texts. #G2Great
A3. However CHOICE does not mean a free for all. Choice from "these 6"/this theme/find a parallel book. Also a "nudge" to explore other genre - look for new "favorites". Personal inventory of what read.
MEANS classroom = access to MANY books! https://t.co/aO3Lo6LLIm#G2Great
A3 Choice is imperative. How can we possibly hope to create a CULTURE when we mandate what kids are expected to read? Culture is awakened when we invite choice. #G2Great
A3 Choice is almost everything. At least initially. I would ask a T to think about their own reading lives and what role choice plays for them. #G2Great
And then we penalize the kids who do what we tell them to do (which is make sure that it makes sense) and read a words that does make sense even with no context. Mind boggling that we still consider that a thing Lori (but then we consider a lot of NON things a thing #G2Great
TY 4 bringing up this issue, Laurie. As a Spanish bilingual T I need to promote excellent literature in Spanish in the same way I do it in English. Takes some work to make sure our Ss have access to lots of great books in languages other than Eng: it’s time well spent. #g2great
A3 Choice is HUGE! And it only makes sense. There have been very few professional books that I have been forced to read that I loved. There is a pile that I opted to read that moved me and changed me. #G2Great
As simple as it sounds, I think choice often means children's ability to visit the library and to shop around - more than once a week! Something so beautiful about visiting a school library where various children are drifting around the shelves. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3: Choice is everything! Students should have choice in the texts they read and in how they are able to respond and talk about texts. Teachers must learn about their students’ interests and give them opportunities to explore these in books!#G2Great
A3 I don't know how you create avid, life-long readers if you don't give choice. If I have to read books that are forced on me I probably wouldn't love reading, so why do some schools/teachers look at choice as an after thought, or not at all? #g2great
This pic comes from one of my schools I work with from this fall... #keyrocks@ryjunge@AnnaUpah it was the quietest I’ve ever been because I wanted this picture so badly #g2great
Hi Tom! Great to see you with us at #G2Great I remember seeing you years ago at #TCRWP Love your book - I shared it at my district & we are going to be reading it together and talking about it in upcoming meetings!
A3: Choice shows you value everyone’s voice. So much of Ss lives are controlled and decided for them. Allowing choice in reading helps them discover who they are on their own terms. #g2great
A3: I tend to think about choice as a reader in real life, if you don’t choose to read something, you don’t read it in real life...why wouldn’t we show and encourage students to pick books they will love? Make them fall in love with reading so they never want to stop #g2great
A3 Choice empowers readers to take control of THEIR reading lives. It shows students that they don’t read for you, the teacher, they read for them and you are there to support them. #G2Great
A3 Choice is not an option it is a MUST. Choice in what to read, where to read, when to read. Book choice makes reading relevant, personal, and passionate. #g2great
A2: barriers =required programs. Books need to reflect all of our Ss. Money can be an issue. Overcoming=Reading comes first. That time is non-negotiable. We always read. Period. #G2Great
A3: I tend to think about choice as a reader in real life, if you don’t choose to read something, you don’t read it in real life...why wouldn’t we show and encourage students to pick books they will love? Make them fall in love with reading so they never want to stop #g2great
A3 Ts need CR libraries that allow Ss choice. Working together to build up the libraries of all Ts in a building would help build that culture and demonstrate that we are all a team--all in this together! #G2Great
A1 A culture of rdrs across grds? Something beautiful that happened yesterday! Our 4th grd friends caught us hunting weeds on the way back from lunch & invited us into their clsrm to see their new inquiries into plants that match ours! #G2great Big plans to get back together!
So many more reasons to celebrate #LoveMySchoolDay at @richland2_cfi@RichlandTwo When the 4th grdrs realize our 1st grdrs are searching for unusual plants on the way back from lunch, they invite us to their clsrm to lrn together! Collaborative lrng at its best! @CFI_MrsBlake
A2 I worry that sometimes we are so intent on "teaching reading" that we forget to model for readers an insatiable hunger for books in all their various forms and mediums. #g2great
A3: choice is key to every reader. without choice we are not able to grow in order to benefit our community. no choice stifles our students and deprives them of so many opps to find our who they are. #g2great
a3: posted earlier, but I'm still appalled by this - a teacher told me today that her district requires every 6th grader spend 4 months on the same whole class text (Lightning Thief) - what NOT to do! #g2great
Q3. When you survey kids about what they want from their classrooms, choice always ranks high. And we know that emotions and engagement play huge roles in learning. #g2great
A3 Choice is everything. NO ONE likes being told what to read. I bristle as an adult. Always ask adults if they get asked their level when they walk in a bookstore, or if they want to be handed them a book & told they have to read it before they can get another. #g2great
We did, we had to use DIBELS when we were a Reading First school. There were many benefits to Reading First but unfortunately DIBELS was not one of them. #G2Great
So many more reasons to celebrate #LoveMySchoolDay at @richland2_cfi@RichlandTwo When the 4th grdrs realize our 1st grdrs are searching for unusual plants on the way back from lunch, they invite us to their clsrm to lrn together! Collaborative lrng at its best! @CFI_MrsBlake
I walked into such a room this year, but w/everyone’s help, esp the librarian, I’ve been slowly building it up. New grade, new class. Always hard to start from scratch. #g2great
A2: In the past, there were some rooms that did not have a classroom library (gasp!) and then once everyone had one, there is always the money barrier of trying to make sure there is plenty of choice, equity, options, genres, baskets, shelves, etc. #g2great
#G2Great Choice represents and respects S voice, we want books to beckon and S to devour good books, it’s about ❤️ & soul not compliance or temporary skill sets or strategies, it’s about the power of words, the ability to both lose yourself and find yourself in a book
A3 My first advice would be NOT to assume students know how to choose their own texts. We must be explicit and intentional in helping kids understand HOW to choose. #G2Great
A3: Choice is everything! Students should have choice in the texts they read and in how they are able to respond and talk about texts. Teachers must learn about their students’ interests and give them opportunities to explore these in books!#G2Great
A3 Choice is a nonnegotiable. Kids should be able to choose what to read, where to read, who to read with, and how to respond to their reading. #G2Great
A3. Choice demonstrates to the students the trust we put in them to choose to their liking. It is a time they have freedom as opposed to structure from the adults in their lives. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A3:choice is everything. It’s the fuel that ignites our reading passion. If choice wasn’t present in my classroom this week one of my most reluctant readers wouldn’t have discovered Dan Gutman’s books and wouldn’t started a book club w/ friends. #g2great
A3 It's the only choice. One classroom novels destroy one's love of reading. Young kids LOVE to learn and read, and it seems as if schooling hampers them. We need to ignite and rekindle consent in our educational practice. #g2great
A3. Choice demonstrates to the students the trust we put in them to choose to their liking. It is a time they have freedom as opposed to structure from the adults in their lives. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
Also, w/the idea that there is a library in a school it seems that the classroom library is not always highly thought off. How to convince others that this is important? Part of me sees their argument and w/$ an issue, it can be a hard sell. #g2great
A3 Start by creating an inviting classroom library for independent reading. You can beckon readers if you can’t provide the resources that will beckon them in the first place #G2Great
You are right. Choice isn't a free for all. I think that's a big misconception. At times students don't know how to make the choice. Ts have to develop deeply meaningful relationships with their Ss to help guide them in their choice. #g2great
A2 We are caught up in the tyranny of the urgent (curriculum guides, timelines, data collection, testing) and we forget that readers are sown in the pages of books. Books read aloud, books read together, books read on one's own. Kids immersed in books become readers. #g2great
A3: Honestly, there is a tiny bit of resentment that is in my heart when reading a book I have had no choice in picking. It may be amazing but it has to do more to prove that to me. Kids are no different. #G2great
A4: Inventory current practices and beliefs - What prevents culture of readers?
Book reports? Dump them
Tests /points /rewards? Dump them
What builds book love? KEEP those practices
Access to Books!
#G2Great
A3: I would ask any teacher what they like to read. And where. And for how long. And which time of day. I would ask what would happen if someone took all of those choices away. How motivated would they be? #g2great
A3: Choice is crucial but worry that some students do not have access to a variety of books in their classroom. Choice and access are game changers. #G2Great
I've been reading some Captain Underpants with my son lately- there are some pretty gut-wrenching descriptions of schools/teachers in there that still sadly ring true today! #g2great
Also, w/the idea that there is a library in a school it seems that the classroom library is not always highly thought off. How to convince others that this is important? Part of me sees their argument and w/$ an issue, it can be a hard sell. #g2great
It’s not hard to successfully navigate the journey from a bright idea to the funded Teaching Tolerance grant project of your dreams. Follow these pointers to help you get there! https://t.co/3xp6t0uJA2
I think many Ts get confused by this. So many Ss don't know HOW to choose their own texts. Ts have to develop deeply meaningful relationships with their Ss to be able to help guide Ss & teach them how to choose the right book. #G2great
Such an important message Patty. If we turned our thinking inward as a reader more and replicated that thinking in our classrooms, we’d create the kind of culture of readers we need. Choice is at the very heart of a reading culture! #G2Great
A3: Honestly, there is a tiny bit of resentment that is in my heart when reading a book I have had no choice in picking. It may be amazing but it has to do more to prove that to me. Kids are no different. #G2great
A4 We can begin by initiating rich schoolwide professional conversations across all grades & content areas. This isn’t about dictating exploring how to create schoolwide invitations. #G2Great
Oh yes! I have read it many times but admittedly I was not an avid reader as a kid. I was a bit aliterate & that is part of my drive and passion to help engage kids in meaningful literacy practices today. PS I also love The One & Only Ivan (a modern day Charlotte’s Web). #G2Great
I may or may not have been persuaded to let my class keep reading today for an entire period...when we are knee deep in test prep. Kudos to you! This wins favorite picture of the day! #booklove#bestteacher
Your latest #FridayReads touches on a new report detailing racial bias in school discipline, MLK’s “truncated and tidied up” legacy and a call to “re-examine current diversity and inclusion programs to make real progress.” https://t.co/5d19ZzNbl3
A3: Too much choice is overwhelming, though. Teaching kids to choose through lenses is helpful. Even, "Choose a book that fits your latest curiousities" #G2great
A3: I talk to my Ss about what grownup readers do- how we talk about books, choose books that interest us, and share them with our friends. I tell them about my own book buddy and how I text her with my predictions, AHAs and oh my!s. Reading has to come first! #G2Great
Real conversations about what makes good readers good readers #reading! Like @KellyGToGo says, you have to willing to lay your life across the tracks for what maters. #G2Great
Hey Christine! Yes, we have! In fact, we just moved in about 10 days ago. Moving has been quite an adventure. It’s hard to believe it’s almost summer, but we had more snowfall today. #g2great
A4: We have to start with a school-wide understanding that a culture of reading is crucial to the success of every single student. We then commit to making this passion visible at every level and provide ongoing PD to support teachers in building best practice. #g2great
Yes Yvette! Part of the issue is that we bring good ideas into our schools (ie running records) but then never explain why we do those things and what it means instructionally (and not as a book choice method). We love the WHAT but leave the WHY and HOW out of the mix. #G2Great
I think many Ts get confused by this. So many Ss don't know HOW to choose their own texts. Ts have to develop deeply meaningful relationships with their Ss to be able to help guide Ss & teach them how to choose the right book. #G2great
A4 We can get our colleagues on board with creating a culture of readers through ongoing PD, PLCs, and sharing about what we are doing in our classrooms. #G2Great
A4 We can begin by initiating rich schoolwide professional conversations across all grades & content areas. This isn’t about dictating exploring how to create schoolwide invitations. #G2Great
A4 We can only create this global shift if we start with our WHY for this shift. These are important and worthy conversations about the benefit and impact of those changes. #G2Great
#G2great Donors Choose! They are amazing. I’m sure Ts at your school access them for grants and if not, tell them. I’ve gotten so many books from them and the grants are really easy to do!
A4 We can begin by initiating rich schoolwide professional conversations across all grades & content areas. This isn’t about dictating exploring how to create schoolwide invitations. #G2Great
Yes. Need to remember that constant joyful interactions with books (and learning) will serve our students better than constant data collection. Focus on meaningful engagement and growth will take care of itself. #g2great
A4: Get rid of the prizes, bells & whistles, dress ups, "reading day" and all other incentives. Make reading about reading. Make it part of the culture. Easier said than done! #G2great
Yes Yvette! Part of the issue is that we bring good ideas into our schools (ie running records) but then never explain why we do those things and what it means instructionally (and not as a book choice method). We love the WHAT but leave the WHY and HOW out of the mix. #G2Great

A4: I would love to start some book clubs @khanzlik@AnnaUpah@THLibrariZen who’s in?, I miss the reading&running program at the school I taught at @drey_kassie I also think about the these movies are staff picks at stores, what about a book posted outside classrooms? #g2great
A4 We have to start by making it a priority and then consistently talking about it, reflecting on current strategies, beliefs, and involve all stakeholders. Be persistent #g2great
Students quickly learn to see through rewards- what makes this task so distasteful that I must be rewarded for it? Why isn't it joyful in and of itself? #g2great
A4: I'm going to start displaying what I just read, am currently reading, and what I will be reading next at all my PD sessions. We have to build a reading culture with the adults too! #g2great
q4: Share with parents and school leaders that kids should be able to choose their own books - not necessarily a leveled text! I fact, parents should not be told of their child's text level! #g2great
#G2great Why can’t we just use our ongoing conferences with kids and writing notebooks and running records etc. be our assessments instead of all these ridiculous waste of time imposed things!!
Love it when I see real books mixed with our scholar’s “stuff.” If given the opportunity kids will fall in love with a good book. We must intentially expose all learners to books. @FCMSMediaCenter@LRobbTeacher@karianneholt@DrMaryHoward
A4: Sharing resources and research. Encouraging colleagues to reflect on the effectiveness of their current practices. Let Ss and parents just enjoy reading together for homework without the worksheets. #g2great
A4 Schools leaders must make a financial and time commitment to creating this culture by supporting classroom libraries & supporting teachers in making time in the schedule. #G2Great
Mary from Hendersonville,TN. A4: I think it’s a compilation of the ‘little things ‘ we do to show we’re walking the talk. My new mantra is ‘How will they know?’- lifted from Lori Sabo (I think) @ChoiceLiteracy#g2great
A4 Communication is key! Examine the vision of the school. Pay attention to people’s passion. Then you will see what people believe in. Learning. Students. Choice. #g2great
A4 I bought small easels and made a sign for each for every adult in the building. Everyone from custodian, nurse, principal, placed their current "hot read" on the easel. #G2Great
A4: Schools need an honest evaluation of the current culture. Is there time every day for independent reading? Are classroom libraries stocked with books kids are checking out? Is read aloud part of every day? Are students encouraged to borrow books over the summer?#G2Great
#G2Great A4 we need to pause & refresh our goals & immerse ourselves in new books & dialogue around books. I’ve been surprised how absent & outdated teachers knowledge is of children’s literature & what’s available as well as the lack of intentional text selection #bookmakeover
A4 I bought small easels and made a sign for each for every adult in the building. Everyone from custodian, nurse, principal, placed their current "hot read" on the easel. #G2Great
#G2Great One of the best ideas I got from a friend is to book shop with kids. I combine it with small group work. I love it too because then it fills my need to be a children’s librarian. So it’s small group work, then we book shop, exchange ideas on books etc.
A4 Don't wait for someone else to create the book buzz. Start posting what your reading, what you plan to read. Invite other Ts to do the same. Partner with your librarian to start a school wide "book club". Read a lot. Share a lot. Book talk every chance you get. #g2great
A5 We establish high priority non-negotiables & make sure that those go into the calendar first. And to do that we alleviate those things that will NOT enrich the lives of kids! #G2Great
A4: Schools need an honest evaluation of the current culture. Is there time every day for independent reading? Are classroom libraries stocked with books kids are checking out? Is read aloud part of every day? Are students encouraged to borrow books over the summer?#G2Great
We have to be intentional about everything we do, including explaining the why and how. We also have to be consistent in providing Ts with support to implement these things. Many good ideas fall short because Ts don't know how to support them #g2great
Agreed, Fran. I told my Ss today that writing for 10 minutes @ home (a start) is not a choice at the moment, but an expectation. They can choose what to write about, what platform to use, whether or not to share w/me and what night of the week suits their schedule. #g2great
A3. However CHOICE does not mean a free for all. Choice from "these 6"/this theme/find a parallel book. Also a "nudge" to explore other genre - look for new "favorites". Personal inventory of what read.
MEANS classroom = access to MANY books! https://t.co/aO3Lo6LLIm#G2Great
I read books sometimes that other might question but just remember - it’s not my job to criticize what kids are reading but to GET THEM READING (and then expose them to as much as I can). #G2Great
q4: also place no judgment on what others are reading - push aside the temptation to value 'A Secret Garden' more than 'Captain Underpants'. I read crappy mysteries right after I read important literary works, and it doesn't make me less of a reader! #g2great
A5: well literacy is always one of the pushes each year in some way or another so remember to make the time for students to learn who they are as readers and make the time, it’s so worth it! #g2great
This is amazing! And who doesn’t love a phone booth, even if the kids don’t understand people actually used to make phone calls in there, what a cool place to choose a book! I want a telephone booth! Now! #g2great
It’s all about priorities. Creating a reading culture needs to be one. Research has proven time again that choice, time, access, along with a teacher who knows his/her books will inspire and create lifelong readers. #g2great
#G2Great A4 One way I hope to reinspire teachers so that they can take back inspiration and excitement around building a culture of engaged book lovers is to immerse them in a Teacher book tasting this summer
#G2Great One of the best ideas I got from a friend is to book shop with kids. I combine it with small group work. I love it too because then it fills my need to be a children’s librarian. So it’s small group work, then we book shop, exchange ideas on books etc.
A5 I'm passionate about building lifelong readers, and I'm saddened that so many Ss aren't readers so it comes pretty naturally. I see this as a #1 priority #g2great
A5: To keep literacy at the forefront with the many initiatives organizations must always remember that critical thinking with literacy is a must in our workforce. Being able to read, write, speak, listen and collaborate is a must for our graduates. #G2Great
A5 We have to CHOOSE! We can’t say we believe one thing & do another, even if those demands abound. No we can’t do it all, but we CAN hold tight to what matters most. #G2Great
#G2Great A4 we need to pause & refresh our goals & immerse ourselves in new books & dialogue around books. I’ve been surprised how absent & outdated teachers knowledge is of children’s literature & what’s available as well as the lack of intentional text selection #bookmakeover
I”m with you Molly. I STILL love Archie Veronica Betty And Jughead (and I have a whole set left of Nancy Drew books I pull out every once in a while. #G2Great
q4: also place no judgment on what others are reading - push aside the temptation to value 'A Secret Garden' more than 'Captain Underpants'. I read crappy mysteries right after I read important literary works, and it doesn't make me less of a reader! #g2great
A5: Priorities. And belief that a reading culture is powerful enough to address all other areas. Student engagement and motivation leads to more success across the board. #g2great
A3 Kids' choice is essential. When kids are able to rd what they desire, they become empowered. Just listening to my 1st grdrs, I'm struck by such immense growth! Kids prob wouldn't have made such huge jumps if they only rd the bks I chose for them. #G2great
We recently had Ss from the HS ALS class read and sign a Dr. Seuss book. It was an amazing way for our littles to see the HS Ss excited about reading! #G2Great
A4 Survey families about books they've loved over the years. Invite them to come share those books. Post pics of family members holding their favorite books. Be a big old lovable book beast on your campus. Be obnoxious about it. In an adorable way. #g2great
A5 I always invited my admin in to see what was happening. Reading was key using all contexts to build knowledge, practice strategies, and sharing books...results! I don’t need contrived texts, worksheets and AR to know my students and increase their volume of reading. #g2great
A5 We also must acknowledge that the needs of the Sts in front of us change each year. Therefore, we build that culture from a new lens based on THESE kids here and now. #G2Great
Connect reading and writing at every opportunity. Great readers are great writers. Let students video chat with favorites! (Here’s one of our favorite authors of The 57 Bus, @DashkaSlater) #g2great
Great ? w/no easy answers. I think what has worked for me is not giving up on kids when it seems they are not engaged or not hooked to reading...yet. Exposure. Exposure. Exposure. Surrounding kids w/lots of books and peers who can recommend them is a big +! #g2great
A6. Daily Read Alouds model your passion and love of reading.
Daily Write Alouds model your passion and love for writing as well as reality - Writing is HARD!
#g2great
Connect reading and writing at every opportunity. Great readers are great writers. Let students video chat with favorites! (Here’s one of our favorite authors of The 57 Bus, @DashkaSlater) #g2great
Be sure to read Fran McVeigh’s #G2Great post from our chat last week with Tammy Mulligan and Clare Landrigan: It’s all about the Books. Perfect message for this week. https://t.co/P1DVVS96Ca
Yes! And once kids see it modeled well and often, they begin shopping with each other! (Although I've never quite called it "shopping" before... I love the imagery there!) #G2great
A6 It’s egotistical to believe that our students will embrace what we do no. We can only create a culture of readers if we are members in good standing of that culture. #G2Great
I love the idea of pics with families holding their favorite books! #g2great What a way to send a message to the children! Reading does often begin at home.
A6 model our own reading lives/habits to create a culture of readers. Share the books we are reading. I post the covers of recently read books on my office door. I’ve also seen white boards that teacher’s update outside their classroom door: “Ms. Waufle is reading…” #G2Great
A6- When my students are eating their snack, I get comfy on the couch and book talk one of my favourite novels. Although they're not able to read it yet- they're transported by the story - completely engaged and asking so many questions. It's such a nice time together #g2great
A6 I talk to my students about what I am reading all of the time. Lots of time I will read pieces I think they will enjoy. I get so excited about the ideas and characters that I just explode. They do the same. #G2Great
A6. I think a teacher's ability to recommend books to students, to understand what students are reading, to be part of the conversation depends on her reading. I also think it's clear to students when you do that. You become part of their conversation. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A6: I always tried to show students that I was constantly learning whether it was tech or a new topic through reading...now I’m constantly sharing things I’m reading with teachers&administrators I work with, love learning from others as well, I CONSTANTLY ask questions #g2great
A?: I would never trust a personal trainer who never works out. I would never trust a drivers ed teacher who never drives. I would never trust a reading/writing teacher who never reads or writes. #g2great
Completely agree. And, something I’ve noticed is that these so-called “crappy” books are helping my Ss be better writers. TY to the authors that kids love best, no matter how sophisticated or not their books may seem to some Ts. #g2great
q4: also place no judgment on what others are reading - push aside the temptation to value 'A Secret Garden' more than 'Captain Underpants'. I read crappy mysteries right after I read important literary works, and it doesn't make me less of a reader! #g2great
A6 I often say, "I can't wait to tell you about what I read last night!" Mr. Ficken (the principal) came into the room to share a book with me. He couldn't wait until lunch. Gotta love that modeling. #G2Great
My goal as well. I display kids with their books and new titles everywhere I can think of. The Spanish department at my school houses some dedicated and impressive readers that have helped promote the reading cause! #g2great@jleeschmitt
A6: make your love of reading transparent- share your favorites with students. My building usually does a book study group each year on a professional text. #g2great
A5: There should never be a meeting without a poem, a knock-your-socks-off quote, or an excerpt! If we want to create a culture that celebrates reading, we must ensure we’re the models. #G2great
A6 I share the books that I read because lot's of times it sparks curiosity and Ss want to read what I'm reading, But it also shows them that I'm a lifelong reader and that I value it that's why we spend so much classroom time on reading. It's a worthy activity #g2great
#G2Great A6 I may have merged ?5 &?6 but to restate it absolutely starts with us! We must find that which stirs our own passions and curiosities and share how books have transformed us, we have to believe it and sometimes sell it for kids to first invest themselves
There’s so much enthusiasm on #G2Great tonight about books and reading but we still have a long way to go to build a CULTURE of readerly love across a building. NO CHILD should have to enter a classroom thats a book desert - not EVER!
A6 We share our own reading lives with kids, creating personal book displays to show that we value reading. We can’t just promote it – we must LIVE it in every possible way. #G2Great
A6: we need to walk the walk we talk, so my students often call me a nerd since I attend and talk up #nerdcamps. They know my love of books through my ravs, my book purchases, as well as Twitter connections with authors. #g2great
A7: As adults we have to find our identity first. If we as adults don't know the struggle and joys of finding our identities as readers and writers, we limited our ability to facilitate that in kids. #G2Great
A6: Students will know if we’re faking it. We need to share books we love and talk about them. I take time each week to read my own book with them so they know reading isn’t just something I want them to do.#G2Great
A6 Read and write along side your Ss. Talk about your favorite books. Express your enthusiasm as a reader and writer. Enthusiasm is contagious! #G2Great
I had a librarian once say to me (when I picked up a 'fluff' book), "Please tell me you are not reading that!" Still haven't gotten over it - read it anyway #G2great
A6: As adults we have to find our identity first. If we as adults don't know the struggle and joys of finding our identities as readers and writers, we limited our ability to facilitate that in kids. #G2Great
A6: It would be amazing to have faculty meetings/grade level meetings that invite Ts and Admins to read and write together. Book clubs & writing clubs could be very motivating for Ts to pass down their spark to their Ss. Sends a strong message! #g2great
A6 I think it’s critical that we also share our reading lives as a staff. Sharing and reading professional and personal books allows us to do exactly what we are asking of kids. #G2Great
A6: creating a culture of & for readers depends upon us and our love of reading. without sharing our passion, our readers will not know the highs and lows of books, writing, and debt due to buying too many books, #g2great
Some people are so judgemental. Ugh. Imagine what that librarian says to Students. This is so sad and it's also part of the reason so many students don't enjoy reading. #g2great
I totally agree, yet sometimes I find myself unwilling or unable 2 let go of control. Even though I consider myself a T who co-constructs class w/my Ss because I know value of doing so, I find letting go is difficult at times. What about Ts who don’t get it? #g2great
Wow & sorry to arrive at the end of #g2great but this question is everything- how can we expect the kids to value something if we don’t model that WE value it? Sharing w students how we developed a love of reading & writing is vital - not to mention the power of story...
A7. A. Fear - cave to demands of testing companies, basals, & so called "experts". B. Time - what to give up. C. Resources - not enough books, texts (see @ClareandTammy )
D. Hard to "go bravely against all others alone"!
#G2Great
A6: It would be amazing to have faculty meetings/grade level meetings that invite Ts and Admins to read and write together. Book clubs & writing clubs could be very motivating for Ts to pass down their spark to their Ss. Sends a strong message! #g2great
The doorbell just rang right before this chat...the 4th grader next door brought me a poem she’d just written. I love that she knows I’ll celebrate her words and that she’s a reader and writer! #G2great
A6- I model looking to books for guidance all the time-if a S says “I don’t know how to draw a snake”, I say “Let’s go find one in a book”; if a S says “Are there are any volcanoes here?” it's “Which book could help us find out? let's make it a given that books will help #g2great
Wow & sorry to arrive at the end of #g2great but this question is everything- how can we expect the kids to value something if we don’t model that WE value it? Sharing w students how we developed a love of reading & writing is vital - not to mention the power of story...
#G2Great A6 to teach writing one must write; to teach reading one must be a Reader; to do both is to represent and model the power of words...words are life and we need to breathe in life to awaken the lives in front of us
A7 We can release our death grip on our own biases and misconceptions. How can we ignore the research on volume when we know that this research abounds. #G2Great
Get teachers into one another’s classrooms. Show what independent reading, book talks, and conferring look like in action. Share the research. Get admin on your side to help promote. #G2Great
A7 Too many schools/Ts don't make it a priority. So many schools/Ts do things even though research says we shouldn't. Maybe because Ts are just stuck in doing it the way its always been done. Leadership has to make it a priority. #g2great
The kids couldn’t wait until after lunch when they could see what was in the box! And I’d always be at my desk already reading one of the newest books! I had to before they all wanted them! #g2great
Lauren, you just gave me an idea: what if we use a few mins @ staff meetings to recommend PBs and encourage Ts to participate in #classroombookaday? How great would that be? #g2great@heisereads
A6: It would be amazing to have faculty meetings/grade level meetings that invite Ts and Admins to read and write together. Book clubs & writing clubs could be very motivating for Ts to pass down their spark to their Ss. Sends a strong message! #g2great
A6. Administrators need to step away from their desks and into a classroom to read a book. When the children see this happening, they know that there will be a support system for them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
#G2Great A7 we’ve got to relinquish control and remember that we shouldn’t ask Ss to do something we wouldn’t want to do, in particular many T limit the # &/or level of books Ss read. We’ve got to allow for Ss to juggle multiple and varied books as well as allow for abandoning
Children shouldn’t have to get the luck of the professional draw. Our classrooms can’t be a crapshoot - but a guarantee that EVERY child will enter ANY classroom and have the same joyful learning https://t.co/0sveSotI2V exception will do! #G2Great
A7 Too many schools/Ts don't make it a priority. So many schools/Ts do things even though research says we shouldn't. Maybe because Ts are just stuck in doing it the way its always been done. Leadership has to make it a priority. #g2great
A6. Administrators need to step away from their desks and into a classroom to read a book. When the children see this happening, they know that there will be a support system for them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A7 If we provide extended periods of time to read books of choice, and provide exquisite instruction and support, we will create a culture of lifelong readers. We simply need to make those things sacred. #G2Great
A6. Administrators need to step away from their desks and into a classroom to read a book. When the children see this happening, they know that there will be a support system for them. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
A7 We can have more conversations like this. Some vocal so called “experts” trivialize this research for personal reasons and so we take responsibility for doing our own. #G2Great
A7: The constant drive for “data” and the fear that if we aren’t directly teaching a student while reading independently or giving them a worksheet to fill out, they may not be learning. #G2Great
A7. We have way too many people telling us that we should be doing other not so important things. Things that take valuable time away from extended time for kids to read books they chose for themselves. AND no company out there can monetize ind rdg. #g2great
LOL! Today, I had a virtual crowd around me as I opened the @scholasticCDA order that contained some books I’d gotten for the classroom. Pure joy! #g2great
A7: constantly model reading...I would tell students about me running on the treadmill and reading, eating lunch and reading, baking and reading, I could make time if it was a priority! #g2great
A7 Recently heard @JSerravallo proclaim, "No more independent reading without support." We must give students intention & purpose for reading to create the culture. Even if that purpose is for FUN #g2great
A6 It is a lot more likely that students will develop a passion for reading/writing or meaning-making/communication if we model and share our passions for them. What we discuss signals what we value and cherish. #G2Great
I really think that until the testing culture breathes its last breath, we have a big problem. The high stakes nature of these stupid tests scares admin, and in turn teachers, so that we get stuck with reductionist approaches to literacy. #g2great
Me too Jen. It's something we fought for even when i started teaching in 1972. But we can’t stop trying to make it our priority in every school. Sadly a lot of groups out there as we speak with agendas at work so we have to fight even harder. #G2Great

A6 Every day I worry about my kiddos not having access to as many books next year as they did this year. Its so hard to have them so early and send them off wishing. #G2Great
The fact that #G2Great is already trending on Twitter shows how much reading is valued. But CULTURE of readers requires that we value it across an entire building and that’s where we have work to do. Let’s put away the worksheets and scripts and pull out the books that HOOK kids!
#G2great I’ve had to intervene once or twice when Ss have been “fighting” over a book they both want to read. LOL Even though they shouldn’t squabble, I’m happy they are loving the books in our library.
I really think that until the testing culture breathes its last breath, we have a big problem. The high stakes nature of these stupid tests scares admin, and in turn teachers, so that we get stuck with reductionist approaches to literacy. #g2great
You're right, but the reality is that it is the luck of the draw and too many of our students suffer the consequence. Too many Edu leaders aren't doing what's best for our students. It's sad and it's what drives me forward everyday. #g2great
A7 Action research is plays such an important role, particularly because it allows us to follow our own curiosities and explore where those curiosities lead us. POWERFUL! #G2Great
You're right, but the reality is that it is the luck of the draw and too many of our students suffer the consequence. Too many Edu leaders aren't doing what's best for our students. It's sad and it's what drives me forward everyday. #g2great
Yes! I love when I hear Jason West, a principal I work with, reading in classrooms, it draws me in and I’m not even a student! The students adore it as well! #g2great I can’t find his twitter name but I will!
The Read Alouds come easily for me. The Write Alouds are hard! My writing life does not keep pace with my reading life. Something to work on! :) #G2great
A7. There are so many different perspective of how to teach children to read that we take the joy out of it. We need to teach towards the children's needs and not for any standards or statistics. #LitBankStreet#G2Great
I think teachers should experience all aspects of a students school life. Think it would be eye-opening and foster much needed empathy for what students face on a daily basis. #g2great
A6: It would be amazing to have faculty meetings/grade level meetings that invite Ts and Admins to read and write together. Book clubs & writing clubs could be very motivating for Ts to pass down their spark to their Ss. Sends a strong message! #g2great
A7 Acknowledging that it can take time for Ss to catch the reading bug. Supporting all Ts with developing a reading culture within their CR. Helping Ts build up their CR libraries if need be. #G2Great
A8 One concrete way to identify this data to explore what increase we are seeing in reading (minutes, pages, books). That of course is only a starting point but a great informant. #G2Great
A8 I think the rate of improvement throughout the year is important to track. Was their increase during a time of more engagement? A Favorite series? #g2great
A7 We have to know and share the research w/others. Stand confidently by what we do and be able to articulate why we are doing it. (Checking in for the remaining ? since the chat slipped my mind!) #g2great
A7 We just have to be faithful to keep reading ourselves, sharing book titles and "evangelizing" about the importance of kids reading for extended amounts of time during the school day. I'm silly enough to believe that our passion and commitment can make a difference. #g2great
A7: there are times when i feel that it is all about control whether it be admin or teacher---giving students the choice and time to read does not provide a grade that can be put onto paper each week. #g2great
#G2Great A8 The feeling you get when you enter a culture of readers in a classroom is palpable...it has a different beat, a certain hum that is often difficult to define but you don’t want to leave, you wait for an invitation to the club
A8 Conferring will provide an incredible reference as we gather anecdotal evidence over time at growing understandings about the books kids are reading. #G2Great
A8: When students beg for just 5 more minutes to read or their is waiting list for a favorite book. When students ask to hold their own book clubs during lunch or outside of school!#G2Great
A7 I think it is critical that we continue to share the research that clearly supports increasing the volume of reading and sharing examples of the innovative ways teachers are making it happen. Readers grow by reading! #G2Great
A7 I also think Preservice educators need to do a better job of training new teachers. Students need strong literacy leaders to make sure they have the prerequisite skills to dev as a reader. #g2great
A7 My best drawers draw. My best readers read. I constantly repeat this. Quantity (especially with meaningful feedback) leads to quality. Preach it. Live it. This is true for all skills. Increasing joy around a skill will increase quantity of engagement w/ that skill. #G2Great
A8: The kids that can’t keep their noses out of a book will make a compelling data points. The volume of reading will increase their test scores for the “hard” evidence. #g2great
A7 This is so easy for me to do! We’re reading 30 mins/day during ind reading time now. Today we went to 35 and one student noticed it w/glee. #g2great
A8. Data can be collected in many forms. From the books that are read, to the summaries that are written etc. We can also take into account the books chosen to read and how they may differ from the start of the year till the end of it. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A8: I’m all about soft data with this...you can feel a school that loves reading, that is the best feeling! Kids are begging to read, talking about books, want to hear their teacher read, ask questions, think deeper #g2great
A8: the data is the amount of time reading, the gains made as readers and writers, the decisions made by the students, and the amount of engagement/involvement witnessed in and out of the classroom. #g2great
A8: Soft data is having students stop me in the halls to tell me about the books they are reading or requesting to have a literacy bunch with me. #G2Great
A8 While we make sure that we are using the soft/hard data that reflects what we are working to achieve, we can also use other assessments to reflect that growth as well. #G2Great
The fact that #G2Great is already trending on Twitter shows how much reading is valued. But CULTURE of readers requires that we value it across an entire building and that’s where we have work to do. Let’s put away the worksheets and scripts and pull out the books that HOOK kids!
A7: In order to improve in anything, time must be spent doing that thing - to get better at reading, we need to read. Creating lifelong readers is the goal! #G2Great
#G2great I think brand new Ts at beg of their careers usually don’t get the support they need in those early years of teaching. So important to support them so they don’t leave the profession if they have the calling.
Sometimes hard to find the time, but so important to keep current with the research. One of the reasons I belong to professional literacy organizations like @ILAToday@ncte and @mraread#g2great

Just wanted to share that I have a book coming out this fall aimed to help all learners meaningfully engage comprehension skills and writing skills. My wish is that it can help your students, especially the strivers. #G2Great
