The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Goooood morning #edchatph let’s start our quick introductions this lovely morning.
Tell us your name and what part of the Philippines or the world you’re from and what subjects you teach.
Likewise join Mary on YouTube for a simulcast of today’s chat: https://t.co/2tQ0yEKWSF
A1: Ss are not given the answer by the Ts. Instead, qs/activities are scaffolded to help them come up with answers/conclusions on their own in their context. #edchatPH
A1 I love how to "mess" around and rock my students' boats in terms of their common misconceptions. This is a surefire way of getting their thinking gears going. #edchatPH
so true but can only be achieved when teachers perspective of inquiry is broad as well #edchatPH hard to achieve this in a traditional classroom set up :(
A1: An inquiry classroom is one filled with curiosity & a growth mindset. Ss can take risks, get a little messy, & learn from it all. That can't happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled w/ trust & agency. #edchatPHhttps://t.co/ulyJbBl8gN

Though I have been facilitating an inquiry classroom for quite sometime, I'm still learning how to find that balance of letting go and having a vision on where we want to lead our Ss. #edchatPH
A1: inquiry is all about exploring, testing, iterating, making and creating. Inquiry should be real, authentic and have a clear outcome or goal https://t.co/uHOKOu6hUS#edchatPH
A1: Inquiry is extending knowledge by researching, peer learning and any method that helps to form connection with previous knowledge and help ss to grow. #edchatPH
A2: Students need to have voice, choice, and ownership (agency!) in their learning. If we are the only ones providing questions, then they still aren't inquiring for themselves. https://t.co/r6dyYTab0B#edchatPH
so true..so many things to unlearn. I just wished I was mentored but sadly not, twitter has been a great help, plus my not so good classroom experiences forced me to really self reflect in my teaching practices #edchatPH
A1: Inquiry is extending knowledge by researching, peer learning and any method that helps to form connection with previous knowledge and help ss to grow. #edchatPH
A2 Gives us a glimpse on their current understanding of the concept which will guide us on how to address the learning in the classroom whether to step back or push through #edchatPH
I'm really sorry to hear that. But in our own little ways, we can begin testing out the waters of inquiry.
Physical education is another subject that naturally lends itself to inquiry. Strategies, training, teamwork are all hallmarks of inquiry learning #edchatPH
A2: Students ask smart and crazy questions. Such make us smile and cringe. Either way, their curiosity is displayed and valued. Both signify learning. #edchatPH
A2: Ss questions show where their curiosity lies: more buy-in from the class, more engagement. Ss voices are valued & leads Ts on where the inquiry goes. We just follow the breadcrumbs! #edchatPH
A2 Ss questions basically let us pick their brains (good formative assessment in a way) and this also gives them a feeling of security as to what kind of learning environment you espouse.#edchatPH
totally agree! being able to form connection helps a lot in students learning experiences. makes it more meaningful for both the Ss and the Ts #edchatPH
A1: Inquiry is extending knowledge by researching, peer learning and any method that helps to form connection with previous knowledge and help ss to grow. #edchatPH
A3: We don't "get" students to explore their questions—we empower them. They shouldn't be doing it for us! We cultivate an environment where their questions matter. https://t.co/7Bv59Wtn8z#edchatPH
A3: Ts design activities that support answering Ss qs. We can also provide that safe space for Ss to lead us where they want to go. Providing a framework for Ss may help them in unlocking their minds that lead to exploration. #edchatPH
A3: I do a breadcrumb-style of teaching: asking a big question, then asking small questions that would lead them to the right answer to the big question. #edchatPH
A2: Student questions allow Ss to form deeper connections and promote growth mindset. The way Ts respond or handle Ss questions can make or break Ss interest in learning and confidence. #edchatPH
A3 I could attack it on several levels: through their peers (always love seeing them figure things out together), talk to experts, then verify via research. #edchatPH
When you think of all the possible things you COULD include in a curriculum, it's somewhat presumptuous to think that our existing curriculum is going to satisfy each student's curiosity. So OF COURSE we need to embrace the idea of open inquiry. #edchatPH#learningislearning
A3: Ss must feel that their Ts are interested with their queries. This creates a connection thus the Ss become motivated and ecouraged to reflect on their inquisition questions. #edchatPH
A3 it's important that students find creative and innovative ways to explore their questions. At the same time, guide them by provoking and extending their thinking all throughout the inquiry process #edchatph
A3: we need to design learning experience that supports inquiry and exploration. I want to be honest to myself, not easy to get Ss to self-explore their own questions. We just need to support by designing the experience to make that happens and to align to the LOs. #edchatPH
Hello #edchatPH team please welcome my #edtech coordinator @diolawy im introducing her to the wonderful world of #edchats Lafi, im sure you know Ms. Winnie :)
Yes, we are still there to guide and coach—great point! However, is there a right answer? Often there are many—especially when it comes to big questions! 💗💗 #edchatPH
A3 Provide lots of opportunities for students to feel comfortable with inquiry in the classroom, encourage and guide as they go through the process #edchatPH
A4: We can have many roles, but our primary role is often as a coach. We are there to empower. 🌟 Of course, we share our knowledge and expertise with students, but we also work alongside them in creating their own expertise. 💗#edchatPH
Very important, especially if you're just starting out. Guided inquiries also help students learn important skills from the teacher and their peers. #edchatPH
A4: As a fire-starter to ignite the curiosity. As a pace-setter to ensure Ss are on task and continue the exploration. As an observer to seek if success criterions are met and learning opportunities. As a leader to join the dots. #edchatPH
It is crucial to make students feel that it's alright not to know everything and that they're surrounded by people who could help them figure out answers to their Qs. #edchatph
A4: Ts facilitate. Create a relaxed environment where every student feels good about asking and responding. Engage Ss to bring and articulate their thoughts to others. #edchatPh

Now I’m outside of my house using mobile data because our internet is terrible.
An inquiry teacher would ask his student: why is PH internet like this?
#edchatph
A5: First, as Ts we have to have an open-mind to do #inquiry in the classroom. We have to be ready & open to accept that we need to change how we teach. It's so much easier to just give Ss the answer, but much more rewarding to empower them in finding their answers. #edchatPH
A5: One of the most simple—yet powerful—changes we can make is to transform our teaching points into ?s. Open up inquiry w/ a question! This changes the environment from one of "I am the giver of knowledge" to one of "Let's explore this together!"https://t.co/ulyJbBl8gN#edchatPH
Thanks, @teacherforest and @_marymanzano for moderating the chat today and making it even more interactive! #edchatPH.
Thanks to all who participated; let me leave you with these two questions for reflection.
#edchatPH Start with a big question, give them tools (information) needed to understand the big question, throw small questions for them to answer, building momentum, letting them feel they can tackle the problem, until they can figure out the answer to the big question.

A5 Show them something unfamiliar, or maybe challenge a concept that they have always thought to be right (There was a study where many- PhDs included -believed that heat was what photosynthesis was all about.) to get the gears going. #edchatPH
When we start releasing control from our hands and giving it to our students, we acknowledge that we are all partners in this learning journey #edchatPH
A5: Preparation is a potent tool to anything. Prep up the temperament. Organize the objectives and the goals. Choose the activities that lead to self-expression and inquiry-learning. #edchatPh
