A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
I'm Heather from @AsiaSocietyEDU moderating #GlobalEdChat from NYC. I'm pretty handy around the house, which has its own practical rewards. But on the creative side, I'd like to try pottery. #MakerEd#weekofmaking
Please help me welcome tonight's special guest hosts @CAMP_EDMO & @BMoorMakers! Follow them for the questions. They run maker spaces in the Bay Area and Detroit, respectively, so will have a ton of expertise to share! #globaledchat#MakerEd#weekofmaking
John, dialing in from South of the Border where I run an international American school. I am here to learn more than share... I can make toast and on a good day an omelette... #Globaledchat
Hello Everyone! I am Bart Eddy from Detroit-Brightmoor Makers . I have just made a Tone Drum and am posting a picture for you to see. #GlobalEdChat #MakerEd#WeekofMaking
Don't forget to use the Q1/A1 format and #Globaledchat to follow the conversation. Since it's National Week of Making, we're also using #MakerEd and #WeekofMaking. First question coming from @CAMP_EDMO in 2 mins! Get ready, makers!
Indeed, @nathan_stevens. I think the maker mindset is really a key aspect of the convo tonight. How can schools/programs incorporate it into their working philosophy to develop Ss outcomes & global competences? #globaledchat#MakerED#weekofmaking
Hi @BMoorMakers! So glad to have you guest host tonight on this very timely topic! I am impressed w/the drum! What exactly is a tone drum? How does it work? #globaledchat#makered#WeekOfMaking
Hello Everyone! I am Bart Eddy from Detroit-Brightmoor Makers . I have just made a Tone Drum and am posting a picture for you to see. #GlobalEdChat #MakerEd#WeekofMaking
#Globaledchat hey everyone, Aprajita Ralli from India here... I recently created this FB page and also made a promise to keep at it and my blog .https://t.co/I3ko82eAx2.. very excited!!
A1 a makerspace can be anywhere. It can be in the hallway, the classroom or even outside. It is about the philosophy of exploring the learning journey #Globaledchat
A1 I think a maker space is a place where people use a variety of tools - anything from paper & scissors to 3D printers - to explore, learn, and engage creativity. #MakerEd#WeekofMaking#globaledchat
A1: Not only is a 'Maker Space' a place where young people come to create things, but it is also a space where they learn to 'make'-fashion their Identity as a participant in the life of the community. #globaledchat
A1: It's where people with a DIY spirit collaborate on projects, explore multiple solutions, learn from failure, & share knowledge with each other. In a Maker Space, curiosity drives learning & there's lots of room for personal expression. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
Absolutely! Fostering a "Maker Mindset" is a crucial element of Maker Space. "I use my resources creatively", "My creations express my uniqueness", "I share what I learn with others," just to name a few. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A1: a maker space is a place where anyone can build, tinker, modify anything. This is connected to learning through critical thinking. #globaledchat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A1 teachers have always been makers. I have this and this and that. What activity can I come up with my students? There wasn’t a larger term to describe it #globaledchat
A1: Not only is a 'Maker Space' a place where young people come to create things, but it is also a space where they learn to 'make'-fashion their Identity as a participant in the life of the community. #globaledchat
Hi @ApraRalli! What time is it in India? I am wondering about how tech fits into maker spaces. Curious to know what you and others thing about this. #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
#Globaledchat hey everyone, Aprajita Ralli from India here... I recently created this FB page and also made a promise to keep at it and my blog .https://t.co/I3ko82eAx2.. very excited!!
A1 Maker is about exploring the creativity of the journey. Not the endpoint. Learning content is exploring what is happening and coming up with a new interpretation. #globaledchat
A1: a makerspace is a mindset that believes learning can be expressed through creating a physical model, the use of the imagination to solve a design problem and a few others that won’t fit in 280 characters! #Globaledchat
Q2: What are the necessary components of a successful maker space? How do you adjust these for the specific youth you serve? #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A2: A maker space should have open work space, a range of supplies (low-tech for small kids/budgets or high-tech for big kids/budgets), and a home for each supply. Space to store WIP is helpful as are staff who can model a maker mindset. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A2: #GlobalEdChat#WeekofMaking! We interweave youth employment on a stipend basis with maker activity geared to social entrepreneurship. Always looking to find the balance between self-development and community transformation.
Yes, @CAMP_EDMO, personal expression is key! We often miss this part in education. We get "through the content" instead of teaching Ss skills, self-awareness, etc. #globaledchat#MakerED#weekofmaking
A2 Besides space, I think maker programs need to have three things to be successful: variety of materials, a willing & passionate staff to take the lead, and a plan/vision for using making as an instructional strategy. #globaledchat#MakerED#weekofmaking
Woo hoo! Welcome @the_connectory! Great resource for STEM. Glad to have you here to help us understand how making promotes STEM goals & skills in youth (adults too!). #globaledchat#WeekOfMaking#MakerED
Remember that #makered should not be contained by any acronym. It is about learning. Not stem. Not steam. Not stream. Acronyms can leave students out of the design process #globaledchat
Q3: How can maker spaces be used to teach disciplinary and interdisciplinary content, skills, and global competence? #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
.@BMoorMakers I can see how an entrepreneural mindset is a part of a maker mindset for older youth. What a great way to develop Ss problem-solving skills in a way that gets them engaged civically! I would love to visit your programs some day! #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
A2: #GlobalEdChat#WeekofMaking! We interweave youth employment on a stipend basis with maker activity geared to social entrepreneurship. Always looking to find the balance between self-development and community transformation.
A3: Beyond incl. physics, math, engineering and art; making is a great way to build a Growth Mindset & SEL skills. We focus on 6 SEL Skills at EDMO: Responsibility, Empathy, Collaboration, Initiative, Problem Solving and Emotion Management. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A2 & A3 Making in education requires lesson plans w/an inquiry focus so that Ss use appropriate tools for learning outcomes and to ensure that the making doesn't become busy work or "crafty." PBL & SEL really help out here. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
We did 3D print you own light saber hilt. Every Sith or Jedi lightsaber is unique to them. Students had to figure out what size fit their hand #globaledchat
My experience is that Making is the perfect crossection of STEAM. It truly incorporates every letter simultaneously through the process. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
In reply to
@nathan_stevens, @hloewecke, @the_connectory
Ah, valid point @nathan_stevens. I'm kinda allergic to acronyms. They can distort reality while trying to simplify language for practitioners. Is "making" too jargony? Does this term get in the way of implementation? Or is it hip to use it? #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
Remember that #makered should not be contained by any acronym. It is about learning. Not stem. Not steam. Not stream. Acronyms can leave students out of the design process #globaledchat
Have students build off what they are reading. We have students create tutorials about what they create. A responsible maker is one that share what they learn and create #GlobalEdChat
A3: needs to be rooted in a foundation so learning is possible. Art, math, science, can all be taught. Problem solving skills/critical thinking. #globaledchat#WeekofMaking#makered
This is a great framework to use, @CAMP_EDMO! Thanks for sharing this. It will be a good tool for educators to use. I like how, at the core, your programs get at SEL and making is just the process. #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
A4: #GlobalEdChat #MakerEd#WeekofMaking. Our young people are the best advocates for an accessible and equitable maker program. Their interest, enthusiasm and engagement attract others who want to work and learn these skills. The youth become spokespersons for the program.
A4: A main tenet of the Maker Mindset is: use your resources creatively. Work with what you've got incl. your budget! We put maker spaces in both high-income and low-income neighborhoods to thanks to funding. Inspire all kids to pursue STEM. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A5 have jumping off points that all scaffolding of an activity. Some students have trouble working in groups so I have a few related side projects to relate to the exploration. #globaledchat
A4: central location to make it accessible to all. I visited one in a school library that was in the middle of the school where everyone passed by or through. #globaledchat#makered#WeekOfMaking
A3: So many ways! Our class is constructing a model community as a #PBL connected to all ELA bc Ss research to create persuasive letters to petition for changes. Others are using measurement to create @Ozobot roads. All materials are reused or from #makerspace . #globaledchat
Hhm, @BMoorMakers, I wonder this too. There is value in "doing" art for art's sake, gardening just because, etc. But in education, there is a lot of pressure to deliver outcomes. Is "doing" enough to allow youth to learn? #globaledChat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
A4: Have norms & start small so Ss can begin to see connections & then the desire to #make grows in them. Allow them the freedom to connect any of their learning to making. #globaledchat
A4: We rely heavily on the @doituw program at UW for guidelines on accessibility and universal design and often refer folks in our network to them. Visit: https://t.co/L8xyhFhcqD for makerspace tips. #globaledchat#WeekofMaking
I see people mentioning PBL which can be great for your students. As a Maker person I stay away from that kind of thinking. I focus on the journey of learning where PBL looks a the endpoint solution #Globaledchat
A3: needs to be rooted in a foundation so learning is possible. Art, math, science, can all be taught. Problem solving skills/critical thinking. #globaledchat#WeekofMaking#makered
So, start with what you have @CAMP_EDMO? Are there any must-have resources that you learned, from experience, that really help either a) get the program off the ground or b) convince others to invest in the making approach? #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking

Q5: How do you develop youths’ identities as makers? How do you include youth voice, choice, and interests into maker spaces? #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
#Globaledchat A4 .have each child on the same page ,make sure they understand the value of the program and their own creativity. Also ensure that EACH child does get the desired attention, equipment and space
One of our favorite tips is to ask the question... Are people with a variety of disabilities included in the planning and set-up of the makerspace? #globaledchat#makered#WeekOfMaking

A5 Developing youth's identities as makers requires that we get out of the way a bit. Provide the structure and then allow them to collaborate, test things out, and fail. Making allows us to get comfortable with failing & iterating on ideas. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#weekofmaking
Interesting, @nathan_stevens! I was really thinking that PBL was an approach to integrate with making, but you avoid it. So, how do you focus only on the process when we typically do backwards design lesson planning? #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
I see people mentioning PBL which can be great for your students. As a Maker person I stay away from that kind of thinking. I focus on the journey of learning where PBL looks a the endpoint solution #Globaledchat
A6: We incorporate Social Emotional Learning skills in our assessments such as teamwork, focus and concentration, creativity and global awareness. #globaledchat and maker work is seen as a developmental pathway of work via apprentice, journeyman and master.
A5: Open-ended design challenges give youth choice and voice. Because kids are involved in every step the process they identify as scientists & engineers. They design, prototype, test, reflect, and iterate just like adults in those jobs. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A5: Allow them to add to the maker area with reasons & intent. Allow them to make as a way of learning in any subject area. Model your thinking & mindset & then let them go. #letgo#globaledchat
Awesome! So you are developing workforce skills required for the global economy using maker spaces! Youth start to see themselves in the careers for which they are "practicing." #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking

Incorporate art supplies like crayons, paint, etc. to decorate or enhance what is being made. Have students create something that demonstrates mathematical concepts. In many ways we've been doing this with science all along. #globaledchat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
It really depends on what you're trying to make. Sometimes you can start with nothing and part of the process is having the kids identify the supplies they would need to create their vision. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
PBL can evolve into a full maker experience. I see PBL as something to focus a student. We focus on the process by having students keep project logs and write tutorials. It doesn’t matter if what they create works or not #globaledchat
Yes, @BMoorMakers, such a good point! We often learn the most when teaching others. Such a good way to develop Ss leadership skills AND assess what they are learning. #globaledchat#WeekOfMaking#MakerED
I see them as two versions of ways to learn. Some students need a PBL approach and have trouble accepting the freedom of a full maker experience #GlobalEdChat
With really young kids you might want to have basic craft supplies like popsicle sticks, glue, tape, cardboard, or have them bring in clean recyclables from home. Older kids you can use wood, saws, drills, hammers, pvc...depends on the make! #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
A6 #GlobalEdChat. Trainings in project-based learning, Multiple Intelligences and holistic education Resources include funding from community partners and foundations and the “will” to start small such as a woodworking or a jewelry-making program.
So @CAMP_EDMO we can just start a maker space with anything lying around at home or in the classroom/program? I love it! No need to have high-tech stuff. I often think people's misconceptions about this gets in the way. #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking

A6 @CAMP_EDMO has a training to help educators use the maker mindset to develop their leadership skills. It's awesome! (I know because I participated in the training!) #MakerEd#weekofmaking#globaledchat
Yes, sometimes it starts with planting a vision. But is "maker" a weird term to call a young person? Maybe I'd say "creator," "problem solver," or "innovator." @BMoorMakers & @CAMP_EDMO, how do you tackle this in your programs? #globaledchat#makered#WeekOfMaking
A6: visit maker spaces in other schools, don’t limit to just K-12. Try a local university too. This will give ideas of different spaces that you can draw ideas from. #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
Yup! Fundamentally making is a mindset. As long as you're encouraging kids to be creative with their resources, learn from their mistakes, and express themselves through their projects you've pretty much got a maker space! #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
Don’t try to copy another location’s space. Look for storage ideas. Look setups. Your space will look like what is is suppose to and not like another #GlobalEdChat

A6: From our perspective, using your network as a resource to "get the word out" so your community can find you is important. That is were we are able to support educators the most. #globaledchat#WeekofMaking
Hey, jumping in to just say I finally recycled all the take-apart station stuff. Just cost me $22 for the whole year's worth. Thought that was a well spent $22. #GlobalEdChat
#Globaledchat A6. To begin with be project specific. We have alloted a huge room with tools , technology , equipment and boards to show case their process .
I don’t think it’s very different from calling kids a creator. I know a teacher that replaces Name on all handouts with “Scientist” or “Mathematician”. Why not “Maker” if you’re in a maker space. #globaledchat
I totally agree, it's why you should look at several to see what they do. You can draw ideas (take pictures) from others then tailor to your culture. #globaledchat#makerEd#WeekofMaking
A7 #globaledchat Come visit us in Detroit this summer when we will be employing nearly 50 youth in a variety of making actions. (Woodwork, Bikes, Garden, T-shirts, Mural Painting, 3-D Printing...
Honestly, I don't even think they need to keep a project log. More and more I like to think of the time kids have with me as "Mental Recess." Their whole school day is typical so full of structure. Yes, doing is enough. They learn a ton by doing. #GlobalEdChat

How do you do that @the_connectory? Do you mean "getting the word out" in terms of program enrollment, getting partners or soliciting resources? It can be hard to know how/when to tap a network when there are always many worthwhile requests! #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
A6: From our perspective, using your network as a resource to "get the word out" so your community can find you is important. That is were we are able to support educators the most. #globaledchat#WeekofMaking
I agree, Annmaria! It's always great to draw inspiration from others in the field. So often educators can get stuck in their own worlds or grade levels. Learning from others is a key aspect of the Maker Mindset! Great to model for students. #GlobalEdChat#MakerEd#WeekofMaking
Without a project logs, the creation process can devolve into just building for the sake of building. We need the students to keep track of what they do to share #GlobalEdChat

I toured schools in Germany several years ago, & there was one school that was what I would consider a making school. They taught blacksmithing, bow construction, musical instrument construction....you name it. It was a really neat school. #globaledchat
Yes, I worry about projects losing focus. Sometimes hands-on activities are just busywork and not really getting Ss anywhere! #globaledchat#MakerED#WeekOfMaking
