Welcome to #hcpsteach chat!
I'm Mike Roberts, and I will be your guest moderator for tonight's chat about classroom management!
Introduce yourself and share your favorite movie teacher - Bonus points if you find a GIF!
There are so many to choose from! But one who immediately comes to mind is Minerva McGonagall. I love her dedication to learning, how she makes things relevant to her students, and just her overall awesomeness! #hcpsteach
A1: I let my students do self-assessments, grade their own assignments, and offer take-home tests on a regular basis. I let them know that I will trust them until they give me a reason not to. 99% of the time, they don't give me that reason. #hcpsteach#gottagiveittogetit
A1: As simple as it sounds, I also try to tell them that I trust/respect them a couple times a week. I understand that actions speak louder than words, but sometimes it's nice to hear the words, too :) #hcpsteach
A1. I try to make it fun and relaxing. We have a popcorn & cotton candy funded through @DonorsChoose which helps. Just standing at the door, saying hello, and saying "Welcome Back" when students have been absent. It's not so much the big but small things that add up. #HCPSTeach
#HCPSTeach Thanks Sylvia! Likewise! 1st semester of grad. school has been kicking my behind but good to be back in school at @USFCollegeofEDU. Awesome program there!

A2: I greet them outside my classroom with a fist-bump and a smile EVERY DAY! Little things like that go a long way once things get rolling inside the classroom. #hcpsteach
A2: I've also been know to run down the hall slapping high-fives like a football player running out of the tunnel! When students see me getting excited about class, they get excited, too. #hcpsteach#everyoneloveshighfives

Having “touch points” as kids enter. A smiling face at bus ramp or car line, then the courtyard, cafe and finally classroom. That’s at least 4 smiling faces before they start the day #hcpsteach
A2. Definitely stand at the door and greet. Also, I've noticed that students, especially at the HS level, appreciate it when you notice their shirts because it is an outward expression of who they are...so I'll say "Nirvana; sweet!" or "Star Wars!" #HCPSTeach
Our school is big on that, they are greeted w/handshake coming on campus, then in breakfast line, then in study hall, then as enter building for class--and each class

A3: Boredom. In all my years of teaching, I've never had a students misbehave when they are engaged in the learning. NEVER. #hcpsteach#keepitinteresting
A3: As hard as it is to admit, some of my worst management experiences occurred because I didn't plan an effective lesson. I would give my students too much unstructured time, and then I blamed them when they misbehaved. #hcpsteach#admittingitisthefirststep
Boredom. No compelling why. We need to make sure students are intellectually engaged. But they’ll never get there if they think you don’t care. #hcpsteach

A3: Sitting still too long is also a cause. You need to schedule opportunities for them to get the wiggles out in a productive way. If you don't, they will get them out in their own, less productive way :) #hcpsteach#trustmeonthisone
Q3. Frustration. It could be personal life; disciplinary issues that linger; they see no value in what they are learning; they don't want to feel "dumb"...so difficult to pinpoint. A Ts response is always important. #HCPSTeach

Thank you for pointing this out and being vulnerable on social media where people usually only want to show their best. We love @jessxbo for starting #failingforward and reflecting on lessons each week. check it out: https://t.co/czTyHnNLyA#hcpsteach
Common mistake that I see in all levels of experience. Sometimes I see teachers get frustrated with the curriculum or the supplies available at their site. #noexcuses#hcpsteach#perservere
#HCPSTeach This is very true! I have two flex. seating projects on @DonorsChoose right now to bring in some different options so that Ss can move out of desks and into stools. I will also have a project for skylights!
A4: The more you can empower students in their learning, the greater their engagement will be. The more engaged they are, the smoother things run. #hcpsteach#teachermath
A4: I truly believe that all students want to learn...they just might not want to learn via the way that I'm proposing. If there is no buy-in, things head south quickly. But if they are interested, well, you get the idea... #hcpsteach#givethemoptions
A4. Empowerment. When Ts give Ss choice, they are empowering them to be responsible and responsive in their own learning. It is intimidating to give Ss choices and Ss oftentimes need time to acclimate to being able to make choices because they are so used to not #HCPSTeach
If you pick up a handful of them, let me know, and I'll do a Skype visit with your school. Nothing like a little (kinda) free PD. Same deal for any of your schools! #HCPSTeach

At @LearningForward attended a great session on equity in the classroom thru student voice and choice. #gamechanger How can we ensure everyone feels their opinion is valued and respected? #hcpsteach
She means it @BaldRoberts !! Her teachers are amazing and crave PD. I love them bc they are always innovating and pushing the envelope on #WhatIsSchool#hcpsteach

Right now, I stand at a podium and do not sit down except for lunch. The podium is not to be the "sage on the stage" but it has the slimmest profile, lol! I got rid of my ginormous teacher desk about two years ago. I would love a standing desk! #HCPSTeach

A5: We also have a one-minute shoutout session at the end of each class where students recognize the cool things their classmates did that day. It may be a small act, but it definitely strengthens our community. #hcpsteach
Dedicate part of a bulletin board so students can promote and invite others to their events. Plays, concerts, games, everyone supporting and cheering for each other #hcpsteach

I’m blessed to have a job where I get to see the great things so many of our teachers are doing! I just want them all to connect and be super together 😄 #hcpsteach
A5. This is another area where I can improve upon for my Ss. I love the ideas I am seeing so far. I may have to convert the whiteboard at the back of our room into a "Shout Out" board and read from it. #HCPSTeach

It’s been great chatting with all! Thanks for the invite. I’d love to hear what you think about the book. And I’m totally serious about doing a Skype visit if you can convince your school or district to buy 20+ books. #HCPSTeach

My students did a creative writing assignment where I simply asked them to impress their audience with their story.
No grades. No modeling.
And they killed it!
100% engagement for the entire hour! And the stories were awesome!
