  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:04 PM EST
Hey #NoVAedchat! I'm Margaret and I love snow days because it's a cozy time to read and hang out on the couch! I didn't go outside in the snow at all on Monday!

  • MrsTannenb Jan 16 @ 8:06 PM EST
A1: It depends- sometimes it is based on feedback, but most of the time, it is sparked out of someone else' s great ideas I heard or seen #NoVAedchat
  • robinwellshick1 Jan 16 @ 8:07 PM EST
Student data, peer data, self-reflection. #NoVAedchat

Good evening! #novaedchat Snow days are made for rest after you've plowed through clearing the driveway and sidewalks.

A1 - I believe it depends on what objectives you've set out to accomplish for yourself. In many instances, your conversations with those who are in a place you are looking to go will help you to determine the path of learning. #novaedchat
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 I definitely take on more than I should reasonably take on. I want to know lots of things. I see what school/division goals are, talk and listen and see what my PLN is talking about, listen to what teachers I work with are interested in! #NoVAedchat

Q2: What challenges have you faced or heard of others facing when pursuing professional learning? #NoVAedChat
  • coreythornblad Jan 16 @ 8:16 PM EST
A1: Twitter, blogs, conversations and problems that I encounter (and want to find solutions to) in my classroom, building and school system are what help me identify what I want to improve in my teaching practice. #NoVAedchat
  • MrsTannenb Jan 16 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Finding the right fit- PD that fits where you are at and is not too slow or too overwhelming. Also, making time in a busy schedule for PD #NoVAedchat
  • AbramsTank95 Jan 16 @ 8:17 PM EST
One of my favorite parts of podcasts - generally no extended commercials. Netflix, Pandora, any other streaming service along with the DVR have changed my life for the better. The one exception is SuperBowl. Back the topics at hand though. #novaedchat

  • robinwellshick1 Jan 16 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2. A difference in what the end result should look like. Sitting too long. Presenting material to ts in the exact way that is frowned upon for Ss ( long lectures, no movement, non-auditory etc) #NoVAedchat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:18 PM EST
I'm with you. We (as trainers) have to do better)...we should MODEL what we want Ts to do for Ss. #NoVAedChat

A2 Having the chance to implement what you’ve learned - during PD and upon returning to school. #NoVAedchat

A2. Being grouped for instruction but not trusting those in the space to share real observations of challenges. #NoVAedchat

    In reply to @HelloItsMsO
  • AbramsTank95 Jan 16 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2 - I have found it difficult in some instances to find courses that meet all of the needs I want. It usually takes a combination of courses to complete ever task, skills, etc. I'm looking for. There is no one size fits all course out there IMO. #novaedchat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:20 PM EST
Yes- or trusting them as learners AND designers of learning. We don't need to micromanage teachers. #NoVAedChat
    In reply to @robinwellshick1
  • TechyMargaret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:21 PM EST
YES!! This is so important. We are asked to take risks and learn together.... but don't build the trust or group values. How would you fix this? I know I want choice of who I work with #NoVAedchat
    In reply to @robinwellshick1
  • _missquarter Jan 16 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 Finding courses or topics that pertain to my area, self- contained cat b. Most PDs are for GenEd or co-taught #NoVaedchat
  • HelloItsMsO Jan 16 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2b Also, from my SpEd perspective, it can be difficult to find trainings that apply directly to my classroom. It can be a lot of work to figure out the connections. #NoVAedchat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:24 PM EST

A3 I definitely learn with my PLN. #NoVAedChat is a big part, @TechyMargaret @ThisIsLacyB @emily3elliott @AmyWinstead @kelly_freiheit @gjlyman and so many other people. I've built a group that supports and challenges me through work, twitter, and life.
  • HelloItsMsO Jan 16 @ 8:28 PM EST

A3 a lot of learning is done with school based team but I also utilize social media #NoVaedchat
  • MrsTannenb Jan 16 @ 8:29 PM EST
Q3: Right now, I have been doing most of my learning on my own using #podcasts or #edtechbooks. I took a class this fall, connecting with some of my colleagues about #ThinkingRoutines Soon, I will be participating in some ed tech book studies to learn with and from. #NoVAedchat
  • coreythornblad Jan 16 @ 8:29 PM EST
A2: I think that cost can be a factor. I want to go to lots of conferences but they are expensive! I also think that when PD lacks choice and isn’t something you can use in your own way it often ends up discarded when the meetings ends #NoVAedchat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:31 PM EST

Q4: What advice would you share with educators who are looking for connections and learning opportunities? #NoVAedChat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:35 PM EST
A4 Take control of YOUR learning. Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do...also, JOIN TWITTER! #NoVAedChat
  • abctec Jan 16 @ 8:36 PM EST
A3: I learn with colleagues who have the same needs and/or interests as me. #NoVAedChat
  • _missquarter Jan 16 @ 8:36 PM EST
A4 Don’t be afraid to say that you want to learn. I used to feel embarrassed saying I wanted to learn more when speaking to colleagues because the assumption that I perceived from my environment is that I should know everything #NoVaedchat
  • MrsTannenb Jan 16 @ 8:37 PM EST
A4: #1 Join Twitter and find your #PLN. #2 Find some podcasts to listen to and learn from #3 Realize that not all learning has to happen in a staff meeting or a classroom with others #NoVAedchat
  • robinwellshick1 Jan 16 @ 8:37 PM EST
A4. Step out of your comfort zone. Keep an open mind. Think twice if they don’t have water and a modicum of snacks. It is a barometer , for me , of the value placed on the audience. It’s usually accurate. #NoVAedchat
  • HelloItsMsO Jan 16 @ 8:37 PM EST
A4 You need to advocate for your needs - tell people what interests you and where you want to grow. Ask people around you for ideas and advice. And of course, invite them to join us here 😉 #NoVAedchat

A4 - Be willing to step out and see what you can find for yourself. Today's learning has been transformed by social media, apps and other resources. There is no excuse for an individual not to find something new. I know some remembers #microfiche! #novaedchat
  • coreythornblad Jan 16 @ 8:38 PM EST
A4: My advice would be Twitter is a game changer AND you don’t have to read all the books and take all the classes - articles, blogs will get you moving in new directions. Try new things, keep what works, discard what doesn’t. #NoVAedchat
  • coachrichlax Jan 16 @ 8:39 PM EST
Hey all, Ryan here. I don’t get to see these very often as I am often with my son, now 8 months old. I try to tackle PLNs through here when I can #novaedchat
  • abctec Jan 16 @ 8:39 PM EST
A2: being a technology specialist: challenges with professional learning: sometimes my personal interests or needs for PD don’t match with the focus on my school building at the time. AND I feel isolated sometimes being the only one of “ME” in my building #NoVAedChat
  • techinteaching - Moderator Jan 16 @ 8:40 PM EST
I think this is a great point, Corey...You don't (and likely can't) read every book. There's so much pressure to be reading all of these books, but we need to give ourselves permission to prioritize. #NoVAedChat

A4 Learn/interact from others who don’t look like you or see the world like you. I sat in a cultural PD and felt that it didn’t apply to me at a because it was very westernized. #NoVaedchat
  • TeacherBowers Jan 16 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: I love learning with my teammates and other colleagues. I find it awesome when we can get excited about what we are doing with/ for kids. I also love that we can have those conversations about specific kids. #NoVAedchat

  • HelloItsMsO Jan 16 @ 8:48 PM EST
A5 While time consuming, I really like in person PD. I get so much more from interacting with other learners. I’m really trying with these Twitter chats, but I still feel that I get the most from a really good face to face opportunity. #NoVaedchat
  • KimberlyAPerri Jan 16 @ 8:48 PM EST
I would like to participate in technology learning opportunities. I want to bring new technology ideas to share with teachers and students at my school. I would love more face to face tech share learning sessions. 😊 #NoVAedchat
  • abctec Jan 16 @ 8:48 PM EST
A5: face to face: but self directed. I have really enjoyed consistent face to face time i have scheduled with one or two colleagues exploring a common interest and “trying it out” (a new tech tool or resources) to get a better understand and supporting each other. #NoVAedChat
  • TeacherBowers Jan 16 @ 8:49 PM EST
Q4: I would say, “find your passion”. You can’t learn everything ( especially not all at once) but you can bring a single passion to your classroom or to your building. #NoVAedchat

I know some schools have adopted a cohort model - a group of teachers picks a PD topic and explores it together for the academic year. I really hope we can bring something like this to my school. Voice and Choice isn’t just for students. #NoVAedchat
