I'm Sara! Currently a student teacher in a Grade 1 class in BC :)
Hi Sara! Firsties are so cute!
Q1. Whole group to start and then divide into small groups and partners and visit each to help where I can!
A1: up till this yr whole group. Scaffold off quick learners repeat myself & explain till everyone gets it. Next yr diff
A1:usually start with whole group then I go back to the Ss who will need extra help & work 1-1/small group https://t.co/Q1dyzgSvIz
Q1:How do you decide on your Delivery Method when teaching your lessons? Whole group, small group? Plz share https://t.co/hkuKXkXBBv
A1: ss needs, divide them and make different classes for each group on
A1: ss needs, divide them and make different classes for each group on
A1 I start off with the whole group and then we break off for the Ind activity, we move to small groups and/or individual Ss.
A1 If introducing new topic or skill will be whole group, use small group for for focused skills/strategies based on needs of Ss
A1 I am a fan of whole group instruction & discussion. Creates community, collaboration. Models creativity & to all
Good point! Let's match the needs of our kids to our lesson engagement strategy. https://t.co/HKiqTy2zdv
A1: start with whole then divide by needs
So agree! I always modeled small group structure; do you do that, too? https://t.co/npUecluoyj
A1 I am a fan of whole group instruction & discussion. Creates community, collaboration. Models creativity & to all
A1: Mostly whole group, but I like small group and partners for inductive or investigative lessons.
Ok...so you always start whole group. That seems to be the case with most tonight. Interesting ;)
OK...I like that!! Customizing for your students. https://t.co/q8UfRpwSTN
A1: ss needs, divide them and make different classes for each group on
A1: Regardless of the delivery setting, I try to vary the settings used in practice to give Ss 2-3 learning environments per class.
I decide based on whether the learning can be done independently, w/ guidance or explain, can be supported by peers or needs "me".
Good! I'm glad that you want to stretch yourself. I think it's ok to start work with small groups too. :)
A1 Sometimes it depends on the content. There are certain topics that I do start in small groups (ie small group/partner activities)
Pairs, small groups, whole class... They're all collaborative! Model respect, grit, & scholarship as whole group 1st
A1 I think whole group lessons need 2 b short as possible, intentional & explicit w/ your goal in mind, need to keep all Ss engaged
I LOVE that!! Again...let's work to customize our engagement strategy to our learners. :) https://t.co/mB8Ub9uF6Q
I decide based on whether the learning can be done independently, w/ guidance or explain, can be supported by peers or needs "me".
. Yes! I teach some of my classes with a co-teacher; we're able to vary more there, even in a "need me" situation.
My litmus test for small collaborative grps: If majority can do the task independently, then I don't assign that task for grps.
A1 pt2: I should add I am full inclusion Ss on spectrum & LD. Class of 12-13 Ss.
That's when your ESL/ISSP teacher can play a role, work with different groups to benefit Ss
Agreed, but important to build stamina, focus&attention. Ss need to see that some things take lots of time https://t.co/QyjPbQBWeC
A1 I think whole group lessons need 2 b short as possible, intentional & explicit w/ your goal in mind, need to keep all Ss engaged
. I teach inclusion too, classes of more 30+ but w/ a co-T. We create groups that scaffold with diff steps and pacing.
Q2: How do you set the stage for Engagement & Hook the Students into the Lesson? Video, photos, activity? https://t.co/noGnAU4yoc
A2: I love for hooks, and using current events to make learning .
I was just going to say!! So happy to see you mention it! https://t.co/zaDo5GT0MI
A2: I love for hooks, and using current events to make learning .
A2 There's a lot of things you could do. Discuss/bridge from last lesson, use a video on the topic, or current events (article).
A2: the first lesson is a teaser of all of the info they are going to learn. It leaves mystery for the S. https://t.co/HMWro3chx2
Q2: How do you set the stage for Engagement & Hook the Students into the Lesson? Video, photos, activity? https://t.co/noGnAU4yoc
Q2. I ask them questions, read books, show videos, give topic and let them discuss what they know already https://t.co/Ks8qCmTW95
Q2: How do you set the stage for Engagement & Hook the Students into the Lesson? Video, photos, activity? https://t.co/noGnAU4yoc
A2 Engagement becomes investment thru choice, creativity, collaboration, challenge, commentary, controversy, & connections.
A2: I love to start my lessons with my Pre-service students with video film clips that link to the math topic we are working on. :)
I like to do it in unique ways,ex. Have clues on desks, class meeting place either using real objects or on paper, have a ? on board
A2: Videos work, but more anything Ss want me to convince them why they need this skill, so I convince them https://t.co/W9EgIEB2PR
Q2: How do you set the stage for Engagement & Hook the Students into the Lesson? Video, photos, activity? https://t.co/noGnAU4yoc
A2 I'm actually in the process of using to make videos to introduce new topics/units.
I have used jigsaw groups, new class decor, prior knowledge, read alouds etc. changing the hook keeps them excited
. I love the challenge and controversy aspect, nothing wrong with a respectful classroom argument/debate!
Good stuff!! You are using a variety of engaging strategies!
A2: all three depends on what works best with goal
A2: all three depends on what works best with goal
A2 Ask a really good question and be silent until somebody answers
Love it!! Kind of like a scavenger hunt. :) https://t.co/BkotWbSCdu

Ha!! Good one! Get the convos going!!
A2: use all three to understand what prior knowledge or interest level of ss
A2: Get unconventional. Use sounds, smells, + physical experiences to activate Ss thinking. BrainBreaks! https://t.co/SPQahtDFXS

A2: How about dressing in a costume, using an app like Kahoot or Arazma or puppets? Anyone?
https://t.co/XprA6i2rJ9
yes. Also great way 2 intro a book you're going 2 read, show 1 object at a time to build a picture of what story might b about
Oh goodness!! Yep! So true. is the QUEEN of Arasma. :)
. I use often as a review or pre-assessment. If the music is playing, Ss know to come in and log on!
A2: kahoot is a hoot. Like noisy and fun engagement this is your tool
haven't us d Kahoot but many Ts I work with do, Ss r engaged https://t.co/hHZpd7Npyw
A2: How about dressing in a costume, using an app like Kahoot or Arazma or puppets? Anyone?

Q3:How do you ensure that you Give Clear Directions and state your expectations for the lesson? https://t.co/5g7fQuLKb1
A3 using an I Can statement & I always do a random student CFU after giving directions
A2: Attn getters: 6 1/2 ft air rocket launcher, matches, boiling anything in a beaker, stare & smile for 30 seconds w/mouth open.
Hello!! I did not get a chance to welcome you earlier! Great to have you with us!!
I always tried to start lessons where my students were at and what they were interested in.
Yay!! I agree...this is so important. :)
A3: Speak your sentences in fragments pause and watch faces & body language. Class in. Be prepared to misread Ss. Apologize.
Hello!! Yes...this is so good. We must be sure that get it!!
A3: Breaking large assignments into more manageable chunks, with checkpoints along the way.
Feedback, reflection, so important! https://t.co/4gq0cOdAD3
A3: by asking ss for feedback & confirmation of understanding. Ss' understanding is a reflection of our teaching
A3: give them a copy and video on
A3: Speak your sentences in fragments pause and watch faces & body language. Check in. Be prepared to misread Ss. Apologize.
A3:I like to make it accessible by leaving them on the board, stating them clearly, & doing S check ins https://t.co/iUBgLJlk36
Q3:How do you ensure that you Give Clear Directions and state your expectations for the lesson? https://t.co/5g7fQuLKb1
A3 work with younger kids so have lots of visuals re instructions for them to refer to, same with my expectations
This is awesome! Student check-ins...so vital to be sure they are engaged and with us. https://t.co/hjq3oR1vvi
A3:I like to make it accessible by leaving them on the board, stating them clearly, & doing S check ins https://t.co/iUBgLJlk36
Q3:How do you ensure that you Give Clear Directions and state your expectations for the lesson? https://t.co/5g7fQuLKb1
MVP: Movement, Verbal, Participation. Where, volume, + how anchor all directions. Give in same format so Ss learn + ask if T forgets
A3 Take notes after each lesson/class. How long things took, what to tweak, what to toss... Reorder, refine, & routinely REFLECT
A3 Make sure the directions are clear for each activity and provide rubrics for larger assignments.
Also, with high ELL pop, be careful of words I use so there are no misunderstandings
Uuuuu...this is gold! https://t.co/mW0HOamR1C
A3 Take notes after each lesson/class. How long things took, what to tweak, what to toss... Reorder, refine, & routinely REFLECT
A3 Ask a student to repeat the expectations in their own language
Q3: with Gr. 1, I'm clear, concise, front load and check for understanding. After checking, sometimes repeat! https://t.co/2y3ozdRWIU

Q4:In your lesson, & during your lesson...HOW do you check for understanding & ensure Students are Engaged? https://t.co/2iBXjqzpeB
to add to that, ask them to explain to another student
A3: My clarity does not equate good teaching. Seen smart T's make this mistake. We teach Ss not information.
A4 That's easy. I use so that I can give my lesson but ask ?s and gauge understanding with live results. Great !
A4: Look at them, their body language... Are they frantically engaged or passing out... ? https://t.co/5q2Uxgejfo
Q4:In your lesson, & during your lesson...HOW do you check for understanding & ensure Students are Engaged? https://t.co/2iBXjqzpeB
A4 Always do check-ins, engagement means on task (quiet or loud) and no misbehaviours (lack of engagement or not understanding)
Student effort & attention is crucial, but the reason why my Ss get better is because I get better thru reflection & revision
a4) Engagement, lots of call backs, white boards, thumbs up/thumbs down, turn&talk while I walk&listen. High energy & passion as T
Oh...this is good to know! I'm not super familiar with so thanks so much for sharing. https://t.co/4vco5WUufh

I really like exit slips. I use white boards as a way to check this with my pre-service students. Modeling 4 them.
Q4. Listen, look @ their work, ask questions & ask them to explain their work to me.That's where Q's come up https://t.co/tXybtVo54L

Wow. Watching & , all at once in my stream .. tho had the night off ..
My take away is that as a teacher, you are never done learning! I learned so much tech related stuff tonight https://t.co/Wz30KD1QBb
What is your takeaway from the chat? Grab some good ideas that were shared and add them to your teaching bag of tricks!
A4 The understanding part may not come right away. Lay foundations, build scaffolds, offer strategies, then let Ss create & connect.
A4: Sometimes I can't. Trick is finding time for Ss w/multiple processing issues. There are more of these Ss than we think
Great tonight. Make sure to connect with other educators and continue to grow your PLN.
