Welcome, we are excited to hear what you have to say!
A1: Nearpod, GoNoodle, Blogs, and anything that the students can use to create artifacts themselves!
Based on my experience, I love learning new things on iPads to use with students! They think it is fun to use them in class!
A1) Anything that gets students creating rather than simply answering. Students love to create.
R2 Ss love Kahoot, Quizizz, Quizlet live, esp team versions. Can use pics, video too practice or intro new info
R1: Nearpod, kahoot, Socrative...have to mix it up whatever you use!
I have also found that students love kahoot! I've also found students love to use quizziz as well!
This keeps from teaching to a standardized test! https://t.co/FB3LwMArvS
A1) Anything that gets students creating rather than simply answering. Students love to create.

I love Kahoot! What a great resource RT R1: Nearpod, kahoot, Socrative...have to mix it up whatever you use!
After the Nearpod webinar in the eLearning Lab during , I can only imagine the possibilities with that tool!
I love the idea of using teacher websites! Great way to bring the classroom home! >Traditional homewrk
I like to think that it helps "catch" learning too! Makes Ss process the information. https://t.co/4efgSE7w9C
This keeps from teaching to a standardized test! https://t.co/FB3LwMArvS
A1) Anything that gets students creating rather than simply answering. Students love to create.
A1: for little ones I ❤️ using smartboard activities & for older kids Kahoot, classroom blogging, & social media (educationally)
R1: I love quizziz, goNoodle, and nearpod! It's a great way for students to interact with one another and to informally assess!
R1: I really like using iPads in the classroom and
R1 Anything that promotes creation! Tech is so much more than practice apps and sites. Ss need to get their hands dirty!
R1) Love anything - just had students creating Google Sites on elements this week.
R1: For me, new school = new toys. Canvas for keeping stuff, Screencast for notes/vids, Desmos Activity Builder for math.
R1: My favorites are Nearpod and Kahoot (also a S favorite), and I really want to try Socrative more!
R1 as T, I use Google classroom daily, also love Padlet for publishing, discussion, EdPuzzle for flipped instruction, e-learning
I never thought about it this way!RT A1) Anything that gets students creatingrather than simply answering.
R1 Anything that lets users collaborate in real time! GAFE now known as Google Suite especially.
R1 Anything that gets them away from consuming content and into creating content! ( beat me to it)
Second question in two minutes!
Good evening! Melissa Pancake, principal in Vincennes. Excited about this chat tonight. R1: Osmos and Reading Eggs
so glad you could be here AND get the kids to bed! Must be super mom!
R1: I've never used Desmos - how do you use it?
RT After the Nearpod webinar the eLearning Lab during , I can only imagine the possibilities with that tool!
Glad you're in agreement, Josh! https://t.co/jnoJMYCork
I love the idea of using teacher websites! Great way to bring the classroom home! >Traditional homewrk
RT Good evening! Melissa Pancake, principal in Vincennes. Excited about this chat tonight. R1: Osmos and Reading Eggs
Love this! Ss are more engaged w/material when they can show their knowledge by creating- esp when they can choose!
Welcome! Thanks for joining us tonight!
Q2: How do you know when it’s best to integrate technology into a lesson vs. when to do a lesson without technology?
Kahoot! Makes the classroom fun and kids learn a lot from it! Competitive spirit really engages students!
RT Q2: How do you know when it’s best to integrate technology into a lesson vs. when to do a lesson without technology?
Lego WeDo 2.0 is a great resource for science exploration and real world activities for elementary Ss https://t.co/vPqMwyC68L
R2 When the tech either: 1)makes learning more efficient OR 2)brings learning to a new level and expands horizons.
When technology provides the most engagement, efficient, enhancing, and evaluative results. https://t.co/AE1LL3debu
Q2: How do you know when it’s best to integrate technology into a lesson vs. when to do a lesson without technology?
R2: When there is active engagement not passive consumption of the media
R2: I learned that all technology should fit the following criteria: engaging, enhancing, effective, and and efficient!
R2: If technology can add something to the lesson OR if it's an opportunity to teach computer skills
I just learned about Push to Students this week, excited about using it
RT : Q2: How do you know when it’s best to integrate technology into a lesson vs. when to do a lesson without technology?
A2)When technology provides the most engagement, efficient, enhancing, and evaluative results.
R2. I try to ask myself, "is technology making this more meaningful, engaging, relevant?"
RT R2 When the tech either: 1)makes learning more efficient OR 2)brings learning to a new level and expands horizons.
how often do you think you end up using it in the classroom?
R2: I think it is important to know your students and take less interesting activities integrated with technology!
LOVE THIS RT A2)When technology provides the most engagement, efficient, enhancing, and evaluative results.
Passive versus active engagement! https://t.co/xlP6cwfYvq
R2. I try to ask myself, "is technology making this more meaningful, engaging, relevant?"
RT A2)When technology provides the most engagement, efficient, enhancing, and evaluative results.
R2) Student voice and student choice should guide your decisions on when to use technology.
R2: I think it's best to integrate technology when it helps to enhance the students learning effectively and efficiently
Third question in two minutes!
love this answer!!! We need to remember technology shouldn't replace the teacher, just supplement the lesson.
R2: Ask if it will help transform the S's learning experience to make it more meaningful
Awesome idea! RT R2. I try to ask myself, "is technology making this more meaningful, engaging, relevant?"
Does the tech need to be all 4 of those?? Or, can it be beneficial with just a few of them?
Evening... Just stopping in to welcome our IU friends to our chat!
R2 When it's not just for its own sake - does it promote student learning? Does it make it more meaningful? More engaging?
I'm excited for you! RT I just learned about Push to Students this week, excited about using it
I agree with t his 100%!RT R2) Student voice and student choice should guide your decisions on when to use technology.
What is Push? How do you use it? https://t.co/Llpx6mErXE
I just learned about Push to Students this week, excited about using it
I teach Dig. Literacy. Always! When I was in the elem, we used it to enhance or document all learning each lesson.
When you bring in new tech, do you survey Ss to determine if you will keep it? What does this look like in your class?
digital citizenship and digital citizenship is so vital in today's society. Glad to hear you're doing it!
Same! https://t.co/w39IE6nDKh
I agree with t his 100%!RT R2) Student voice and student choice should guide your decisions on when to use technology.
Absolutely! Student choice is so important because it engages the Ss because they want to do it!
Do you think there is ever a time as a teacher you should regulate use even if students are wanting to use it?
how do you try to tackle this divide? Any tips?
I love that our community supports all Ts...even ones in training! Indiana is blessed! https://t.co/6uLMmHtPN4
Evening... Just stopping in to welcome our IU friends to our chat!
R3 While wanting to honor voice & choice, some learners (especially adults) need to be gently pushed out of their comfort zone
RT Evening... Just stopping in to welcome our IU friends to our chat!
Third question in two minutes
Ditto on efficient. Must be worth time spent turning on, waiting to load, etc. with 50 mn class, time is precious
Q3: How do you work with students across different technology ability levels within a single class?
YESSSS - even as teachers, never stop learning! Try something new every single year.
Great point! I think it would be important to find a good balance for your class!
Integrating technology as stations can allow you to work with students one on one
R3) providing Ss freedom to use technology for a way that best serves them. Flexibility in lessons is key! https://t.co/h424NGyG4x
Q3: How do you work with students across different technology ability levels within a single class?
R3: I think similarly to how you differentiate without technology. Stations, assigning individualized work, allowing Ss to collab.
. I think the first step is to consistently make authentic opportunities available and provide support/encouragment
RT YESSSS - even as teachers, never stop learning! Try something new every single year.
R3: Get the tech savvy students involved! They love showing what they know. Students always know more about tech than you think.
Also having these students help others! https://t.co/9QLGQUWv0S
R3: Get the tech savvy students involved! They love showing what they know. Students always know more about tech than you think.
so encouraged to hear that a school district so close to my home town is providing such great skills!
can find resource & push: Ss see it immed on screen, get help, discussion topic, or whatever Ss need.
R3: I think that it is important to be flexible with after school hours or prep time for extra help.
R3- Student choice. Give students multiple options to express what they know. No tech to high tech.
I had students even today showing things on their Macbooks I didn't know they could do.
R3: Scaffolding! Have your tech savvy students help those who are struggling, they love to share and assist!
R3 In my Dig Lit class, I use mini lessons to kick off activities then watch Ss models & teach one another.
R3 In my Dig Lit class, I use mini lessons to kick off activities then watch Ss models & teach one another.
R3 Agree with - Have students teaching what they know, frees up Ts to be around the room helping too!
RT R3: I thinksimilarlyto how you differentiatewithout technology.Assigning individualized work, allowing S to collab.
love this response - don't push Ss to use technology that's too difficult, let them use what they like
R3: Provide instructional videos of you modeling usage, it allows students to take responsibility of their learning
R3: Use visuals they can use as a resource so it's accessible to those who need them
Never thought about getting Ss involved in teaching as well!
RT R3: Provide instructional videos of you modeling usage, it allows students to take responsibility of their learning
It works great - and I get to learn from them in the process. Plus gives them a boost.
R3: make sure the lessons and time are flexible
Fourth question in two minutes!
R3 have clear detailed instructions in format Ss can view mult times as needed. Can pair early finishers w slower ones too
R3 Ss are pretty amazing at helping each other if the T is willing to relinquish control &allow for assist Hard w/hand 2 talk rule
RT R3 Agree with - Have students teaching what they know, frees up Ts to be around the room helping too!
R3:Remind Ss they can use their resources to help them if they are struggling w/ the tech- other Ss, YouTube, search engines, etc!
A2: its important not to force technology into lessons, but if the Ss will get an equal or better takeaway it can be more engaging
A3: meeting with Ss before/after school advancing their skills to help struggling students & finding ways to push the more advance
Yes! I tell my students "you have the internet. If I can't help you right now, someone else somewhere probably can!"
Ah! My friend hit the nail on the head. Ts MUST relinquish control for student-centered learning. https://t.co/J3mDbIblTh
R3 Ss are pretty amazing at helping each other if the T is willing to relinquish control &allow for assist Hard w/hand 2 talk rule
RT R3 Ss are pretty amazing at helping each other if the T is willing to relinquish control &allow for assist
Q4: What is the best piece of tech integration advice you can give to a pre-service teacher who will soon be entering the field?
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for online private HS. Coming in late to & b/c son's cross country meet.
R4 Join the CEL program!!
true! Ss def need to be pushed to try new tech, we just must be careful not to push too hard and turn them off of tech
R4. Don't get overwhelmed. LOTS out there. Start small. Don't try too much too fast. Get your feet wet first.
R4: Don't be afraid to try new things and branch out!
Welcome, we can't wait to hear what you have to say!
Ha! ss help me just as much as they help each other, sometimes!😅
A4) technology can be used for lessons that do not always involve Ss on a device. https://t.co/Qn705VQqAu
Q4: What is the best piece of tech integration advice you can give to a pre-service teacher who will soon be entering the field?
R4) Don't be like squirrel drawn to every shiny new thing. Think about what you want to do that tech will allow you to do better.
R4:Trial and error; Also, being patient with student ability
A4) technology can be used for lessons that do not always involve Ss on a device. https://t.co/Qn705VQqAu
Q4: What is the best piece of tech integration advice you can give to a pre-service teacher who will soon be entering the field?
Great advice!

R4. Don't get overwhelmed. LOTS out there. Start small. Don't try too much too fast. Get your feet wet first.
R4 Lean on experienced Ts who have a positive attitude toward tech. Be thankful for the opportunities IU has given you!
R4) technology can be used for lessons that do not always involve Ss on a device. https://t.co/Qn705VQqAu
Q4: What is the best piece of tech integration advice you can give to a pre-service teacher who will soon be entering the field?
R4 Have your toolbox organized, but remember to focus on what you're building--lessons that drive Ss to form ?s, engage in content
This will be my problem for sure!
R4- Don't feel like you have to be the expert on everything.
VERY true. EdTech doesn't always mean 1:1, student:tech.
R4: Always start with a great lesson first, find ways tech can enhance that lesson -- not the other way around
R4: Don't be afraid to fail. Let Ss take the lead on new tech that you're nervous about Use other Ts resources (or tweak them)
Love it. Be purposeful. Focus should be on learning outcomes rather than tool. https://t.co/ZWfjROVUlJ
R4) Don't be like squirrel drawn to every shiny new thing. Think about what you want to do that tech will allow you to do better.
Like the analogy! Very true I see too often schools that install new tech and don't use it at all!
And should get a GOLD STAR for this! Don't be the squirrel! https://t.co/16lYhGKXfx
R4) Don't be like squirrel drawn to every shiny new thing. Think about what you want to do that tech will allow you to do better.
I agree! This will be important to remember!
truest statement tonight!
R4 try all tech on same device Ss use, preferably same time of day too. Try to mess up a bit to see how to troubleshoot (if time)
Ugh. Yes. That's so frustrating. Or get new tech & expect Ts to use w/ little to no PD/training.
Agree! Can never value the tech over the content! Use the tech to convey the content!
R4: don't be afraid to try new things and give choices to students.... YOU don't have to know everything to try! !
Failure is an option and inevitable when you are a digital leader. Be open w/ Ss and other Ts. Reflect!! https://t.co/Xv7uyCAKiD
R4: Don't be afraid to fail. Let Ss take the lead on new tech that you're nervous about Use other Ts resources (or tweak them)
R4: Lesson design was my biggest takeaway from our Hammond e-Learn day last June. Building in tech intentionally = class motto.
I think that's really important; people are so afraid to fail that they don't try
https://t.co/zKWqdwD5bW
R4: Don't be afraid to fail. Let Ss take the lead on new tech that you're nervous about Use other Ts resources (or tweak them)
Fifth question in two minutes!
Q5: What isn’t working anymore? What tech resources do you now find to be outdated and ineffective?
Very important thing that many people don't remember! It is perfectly fine to fail, especially as a newbe!
Amen! Build around what you want Ss to be able to do, not what tech you want to use.
R1) I am always bored when I go into a class and the "tech integration" is a VHS tape...! https://t.co/4txfB22AgH
Q5: What isn’t working anymore? What tech resources do you now find to be outdated and ineffective?
Don't become discouraged. Reflect to identify the positives in the lesson, and what you would change. Be flexible and adjust.
R5: Watching videos and filling out worksheets! BORING (Unless its Bill Nye)
R5) I am always bored when I go into a class and the "tech integration" is a VHS tape...!
R5 It may not be so much that a tool is outdated, so much as the way it is used.
RT Don't become discouraged. Reflect to identify the positives in the lesson, and what you would change. Be flexible.
R5 Isn't about the tool but about implementation, basic tech implemented purposefully is better than great tech implemented poorly
R5 Using technology for the same old methods that we should have moved past 50 years ago
or John Green...my Ss love him!
R5 Depends on the group of students. What isn't working for one class, might be the most effective for another.
Gonna duck out. just got back from NWI Women Of Influence awards, and I'm gonna soak up awesomeness. Happy Friday!
R5 anything that gets overused in your district is fair game here. Too much of a good thing loses its power. Shake it up!
R5: I avoid videos when I can bc it's easy for Ss to tune out. If you show one, make it short + include a way for them to respond!
Thank you for joining us this evening!
Exactly. If you hear students say "we do this in every class," that's when you know it's time to try something new.
Totally agree. Was something that I came to appreciate after teaching a few years. Well chosen clip can be powerful.
R5: Interactive whiteboards, PPT - I still use them, but I think they foster old pedagogies
Hmm...Great amount of tech implemented poorly. Otherwise, it sounds like an oxymoron :) https://t.co/YH3R8HBFrq
R5 Isn't about the tool but about implementation, basic tech implemented purposefully is better than great tech implemented poorly
Final thought: my new pre-service teacher friends, don't be a stranger. You're in the right place, any Thursday.
Sixth question in two minutes!
Agree, only reason to use a tool is to enhance student understanding or learning efficiency - that applies to all tools
SMARTboards are not used as much in the classrooms anymore
R5: telling students to make a PPT! There are so many options out there!!
Any idea about why? Too teacher centered/controlled?
Q6: What are the best ways technology leaders & admins can help support teachers with their technology integration practices?
Agreed! I like using videos personally but they have to be poignant and have a purpose!
I agree! There are so many new ways for students to show their work!
Many Ts used SMARTboards for engagement, but now it's easier for Ss to be engaged with their 1:1 device.
R6: Be open to new suggestions and be free for people who need help!
R6) Give Ts space to try - and fail. Don't expect miracles. Provide PD/training or support Ts getting it themselves.
R6: Allowing their Ts the opportunity to try and fail w/tech, provide necessary resources,
R6 Provide space to try new things - celebrate risk taking and failures as an important part of learning - autonomy is always key
RT R6) Give Ts space to try - and fail. Don't expect miracles. Provide PD/training or support Ts getting it themselves.
R6: PD is a must. It's almost useless to bring all this technology and show no one how to use it! https://t.co/eDcgXM3IW9
Q6: What are the best ways technology leaders & admins can help support teachers with their technology integration practices?
Absolutely! Some of the best PD in the world happens right here w/. https://t.co/QErhgBeVLB
Final thought: my new pre-service teacher friends, don't be a stranger. You're in the right place, any Thursday.
R6 Provide continuous and personalized support - Ts, just like Ss, all learn differently and have different needs
R6. Remember content first. If a T asks about tech integration, figure out their end goal first before coming up with tech ideas.
just based on observation: may be because it was just a glorified white board. Not more than worksheet
Risk taking should be celebrated more!!
R6: Provide opportunities for Ts to practice & find ways to support continuous personalized Teacher learning
R6) PD, ways to access and learn at anytime, technical support and instructional support.
R6: I hope that admins/tech leaders remain open to new ideas for ! Being supportive is important-even if we fail.
A5: PowerPoint & fake Facebooks are two of the most overused & outdated activities teachers still use. They were 💯 but it's 2016!
R6 And don't FORCE tech for the sake of tech. Teachers will rebel - as they arguably should if that's the only goal.
A6: providing feedback on activities and useful tools/resources (PD) could really help change the way tech is used in classrooms
I think it is so important for Ts to have support to try new things!
Agreed! Teachers are the boots on the ground and often know best what their students need!
Can definitely see that. See that with 1:1 sometimes as well. Worksheet on iPad is still worksheet.
Great leadership advice! model what is expected of teachers-build a positive learning process. https://t.co/5XeMggeScD
R6 Provide continuous and personalized support - Ts, just like Ss, all learn differently and have different needs
Provide ample resources to teachers and be willing to help when they need it
R6: Instead of T's always going in for PD. Technology leaders and Admins need to sit in on the classroom to get ideas.
R6 Provide their digital leaders w/ opportunities to grow through PD that challenges them, too.
I always say teachers are learning right alongside their students!
Agreed - I give out a Penguin Award (someone has to go first) each quarter for the biggest risk even if it failed
R6 Budget for a variety of options. Support teachers who are taking risks to try new tools. Offer PD and collaboration time.
Yes! Never stop learning, regardless of your role!
Last question in two minutes!
Definitely! Teachers have to learn just like students!
Biggest obstacle sometimes is lack of time to experiment and try new things!
Absolutely... if you are doing it right, teaching is all about learning -- for yourself and your students
Q7: What’s the best 1st step or 1st professional development experience for Ts new to integrating tech into their curriculum?
time seems to be the biggest enemy in education. So little time!
A lot of our preservice Ts will be there as well! Can't wait!
Attending the ISTE conf. last summer was an amazing way to see ideas & products I didn't know existed!
RT A lot of our preservice Ts will be there as well! Can't wait!
R7) I'm a little biased, but I think Twitter is great resource for personalized PD about tech & other aspects of teaching.
R6 My admin challenges me to think more deeply, but still supports my ideas and provides resources. Not all admin does this well.
R7. Don't be afraid to go and ask "who's great at here?" Then don't be afraid to go to them with questions!
R7: Like some people said before, start slow!
R7: Provide supports and create an inviting environment for school community. Allow teachers to explore tools for 1st PD.
R7 Use the tool for a real purpose My 1st real coaching session was teaching a colleague how to Skype so she could visit w/her DD
I think Twitter is a great tool!
R7: 1st steps are different for all because we are all in different spots - start w/ a controlled risk & build on that success
Some of the best PD time is just taking time to collaborate and see what other Ts are doing.
That's so awesome!! I'd love to hear more about what tools you learned about!
R7 Once you see the value in a tool, you will be able to see how it can fit into a lesson or learning goal
I totally agree! It's such an easy way to get concise, diverse, and relevant info from a huge variety of Ts
I like to find ideas! https://t.co/CgXWRA15RZ
R7) I'm a little biased, but I think Twitter is great resource for personalized PD about tech & other aspects of teaching.
Yes! Observing other Ts is so helpful. Was part of mentoring program for new Ts in IN when I started.
Hey regulars--any questions for our Takeover Guests tonight?
R7 Make sure they can leave that PD with something practical/tangible/relevant to use right away in their classroom
Agreed, be purposeful and find the value of any tool for LEARNING
https://t.co/J9F6owHJQc
R7 Once you see the value in a tool, you will be able to see how it can fit into a lesson or learning goal
I haven't gone down the Pinterest vortex . . . yet. ;)
RT R7 Once you see the value in a tool, you will be able to see how it can fit into a lesson or learning goal
R7 Observing tech-rich classrooms. Finding someone who gets your drive, challenges you, and provides a sounding board.
R7: PLNs!! It's hard to go to PD sessions, but I always have time to get online, even if it's only for a few minutes!
Agreed. If it's "oh you'll be able to use this next year," it will be forgotten before they're out the door.
Pinterest is the best. You won't regret it!!
Here is a question I always like to ask -- what do you need from your building leaders to be successful as a new teacher?
An open door for potential questions! https://t.co/QBMjsZILUx
Here is a question I always like to ask -- what do you need from your building leaders to be successful as a new teacher?
? - What are you most looking forward to with regards to teaching?
Final wrap up: Any closing thoughts, ideas, or questions to share before we call it a night?
Support and hands on experience. Any time we can be the "teacher role" is the best experience for us! https://t.co/cVFoiFq9qO
Here is a question I always like to ask -- what do you need from your building leaders to be successful as a new teacher?
IU preservice teachers, What could be done to encourage more preservice teachers to become CS teachers?
My question is...what edtech experiences did you have in k-12 that were memorable?
Ha ha ha! Twitter can be such a time suck for me that I'm afraid to open another portal to oblivion. ;)
Someone friendly who will make us feel welcome and approachable!
I think just letting people know that it's an option for K-12; before IU, I didn't know it was
Show them that computers aren't scary and not as hard as you think to teach to Ss!
LOLing - "We weren't ready to answer all THEIR questions!!" Thanks so much for this wonderful opportunity !
One of the reasons why I have a schedule for everything that needs to get done! Never off track! https://t.co/j33izRH9Mk
Ha ha ha! Twitter can be such a time suck for me that I'm afraid to open another portal to oblivion. ;)
Showing them that CS Standards have been added to the curriculum along with how it can relate to other subject areas
This is one of the many awesome outcomes of having our state edchat! PLN-leading from every seat. Thanks… https://t.co/uJhwHaobww
Here is a question I always like to ask -- what do you need from your building leaders to be successful as a new teacher?
I'm looking forward to challenging kids minds and helping them think critically!
being able to explore my ideas! With such structured classes, it can be hard to try things I discover outside of class
I'm looking forward to learning my Ss' stories! They may be young, but that doesn't mean they don't have valuable exps!
Showing the value of CS education, and relating it to individual interest amongst pre-service Ts https://t.co/jxEjlZpDuD
IU preservice teachers, What could be done to encourage more preservice teachers to become CS teachers?
Tbh, I didn't have much EdTech in k-12; the most we had was a SmartBoard in the library
my high school, we had 1:1 laptops and I found that teachers could do a lot more interactive lessons with this tool
IU Ss, I know how challenging and exhilarating moderating the chat is. You all did a GREAT job and can't wait to see you soon!
This should tell you how quickly technology in the classroom is changing. It's always evolving!
the only tech we had in my schools were SMARTboards that were only used at projector screens
Support and advice from those with more experience
I can give you a list of these from - there are lots they remember, and more they want to forget ;)
Thank you! It was so much fun to moderate this evening! I learned so much from everyone!
Only bad questions are those that are not asked, asking questions shows that you care!!
