  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 - Desire to please the teacher, positive attitude, personally competitive (always wants to get better), enjoy school, their parents expect high effort but understand learning is a process with ups & downs. #5thchat

A1: Something that I have noticed as both a student and a teacher is that the most common thing that people with intrinsic motivation share is #PASSION. Allowing students to learn and explore subjects of interest, immediately creates a drive to succeed. #5thchat
  • yenneam Feb 20 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 I know it's overused, but grit. Knowing how to make failure a learning experience, knowing that not everything will be easy and still persevering. #5thchat

A2- I provide choice, giving autonomy. Students have freedom to work with others on most everything because that discussion leads to deeper understanding and success, and when students feel successful, they get more excited about learning.#5thchat
  • ReadforCupcakes Feb 20 @ 8:14 PM EST
A2: My media center has open circulation all day every day, we sponsor fun reading activities and challenges, and have our 1st #makerfaire coming up this week and all the projects were student choice! #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:15 PM EST
A2: relatedness: class discussions each day even if it's just a "would you rather.." activity or content discussion, hearing everyone's voice and opinion. We also try to connect to other classrooms for different activities (currently Global Kindness) #5thchat
  • MontanaMcIntyr1 Feb 20 @ 8:15 PM EST
Of these foundational aspects, I would say that I definitely try to apply relatedness on an everyday basis. It is extremely important for me to connect with people, not only for my own well-being but for theirs as well. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: COMPETENCE: allow and encourage my Ss to work on or above their level in order to reach/feel success RELATEDNESS: morning meetings to connect and understand, games and activities to start the day AUTONOMY: choices during station time to meet their needs/comfort level #5thchat
  • shammanaj Feb 20 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2 Competence-I teach SPED inclusion class & have learned value of giving at least one task/day where everyone can experience success #5thchat

A2 I want to say that I do all of these. Ss show competence or they get small group instruction, they relate with one another on collaborative work, and they have autonomy when they choose how they want to learn, practice, and show mastery of a skill. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Feb 20 @ 8:19 PM EST

A2: We have a combination of things we do to reach all three, classroom ownership, student choice and voice #5thchat
  • MontanaMcIntyr1 Feb 20 @ 8:20 PM EST
Yes! Developing relationships is the best way to help those around you feel comfortable. Creating that "safe space" allows for more provocative conversations and ultimately significant growth. #5thchat

A3- I'm encouraging students to share "mini-lessons" and some will do so, but not to the degree I'd like. It's a process we are developing and encouraging in each other! #5thchat
  • ConnieLund25 Feb 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3 : peer collaboration and learning, all day, class goal setting, group discussions, peer PBLs #5thchat

A3: We do all sorts of service projects! This week, our after school club sewed mini hearts for @AQuiltedHeart Just have to be diligent about watching the needles! #5thchat
  • mrsseibel5th - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:21 PM EST
We just completed our service learning project. It was completely Ss lead, best thing I have done in classroom #theroadtokindness #5thchat
  • yenneam Feb 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3 I used to do a service project every year at my previous school. My current school has Genius Hour, and some Ss choose a service project for that. I want to bring it back, because, as St. Francis said, it is in giving that we receive. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3 - We have a student-led classroom, so Ss help each other all day, every day rather than relying on the teacher for most things. In the past, we've done community service projects like: - An Arbor Day Celebration - https://t.co/f3fJlRlYR7 - Helping downtown businesses #5thchat
  • MRMJaysMPS Feb 20 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3 Reciprocal teaching is an amazing tool that helps Ss connect with others, encourage them in their educational journey, and feel successful in a lesson #5thchat

#5thchat Students with intrinsic motivation tend to go above and beyond. They enjoy pushing the academic limit.

A3: My Ss are encouraged to “phone a friend” when needed. At teacher table, if we don’t understand the T, we knock on our neighbors door to ask for clarification. Problem of the Day: I have a “guest teacher” everyday to go over it with the class!#5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3: students are encouraged to always help others, we help each other in the classroom and I encourage community connections especially when working on Genius Hour/Passion projects #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3 (cont): Kids speak kid and understand each other’s misconceptions on a whole other level! Let them feed off of each other’s knowledge! #5thchat
  • MontanaMcIntyr1 Feb 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3: I work at Blind Children's Learning Center, with the most incredible children in the world. Many students who attend the school have siblings that have some type of visual impairment or learning differences. This causes them to be innate givers. #5thchat
  • shammanaj Feb 20 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3 I have group of Ss read to kindergarten every week. They take responsibility seriously (practice reading aloud all week, plan Qs to ask their buddy, etc) #5thchat

A2 #5thchat Being an educator, I try my best to stay competent. To get my lesson out by any means neccessary! The proud product is always my students who make a connection to the lesson, or retain the information!

We had trouble w/ teens in our downtown misbehaving, making it uncomfortable for younger kids to be downtown & driving away customers. We worked with our mayor, police & Teen Council to find a solution that got rid of the problem & improved the situation for businesses. #5thchat

  • MsKirksey4 Feb 20 @ 8:28 PM EST
A3 #5thchat Giving students jobs to complete throughout the day boosts up their intrinsic side. They love have responsibilities. It gives them the idea of being a leader, and Ss tend to want more jobs, with more goals to achieve.

  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:29 PM EST
A4: I like to try new things and learn new things and always share with my students..both success and failure but the learning in the journey is so important. We also practice reflection and we all share some piece of it. #5thchat
  • ncarroll24 Feb 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
So proud of my friend & Twitter Colleague @JennRegruth She was named Teacher of the Year in her district! There's not a better choice as she is caring, thoughtful & full of energy & inspiration. Ss, Ps and colleagues are sure lucky to have such a gem! #4thchat #5thchat #elemchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: I talk to myself A LOT. Therefore my Ss are savvy to my only my intrinsic learning, but intrinsic reasoning and motivations as well. It’s fun to hear them use some of the phrasing that my intrinsic self uses #kidslisten #5thchat
  • yenneam Feb 20 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4 We use @TheLeaderinMe #7habits at our school. In conversations about beginning with the end in mind (goal setting) and putting first things first (steps toward goals), I make sure that I'm setting goals and talking about my steps toward them. #5thchat
  • MsKirksey4 Feb 20 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 #5thchat This is a concept I'm still practicing. Every week, I ask my students what do they want to achieve and what will they do to accomplish it? Whether it is an Academic goal or an Athletic goal, it's important to set the goal up for them.

A4 A few years ago I told Ss I wanted to learn Rubik’s cube & they checked on my progress all yr. Now they monitor my times, and remind me I need to practice to get faster! #5thchat

A2 - #rm222 is student led. From the moment students walk into the classroom with all the tables and chairs stacked in a corner, they are expected to own their space and their learning. First up: design their classroom. #5thchat #studentvoice

A4 - Yes! One of my current goals is hanging up outside of our classroom. It's also important to talk about what you're currently working on and encourage them to share their personal goals with you! I love hearing about their aspirations! #5thchat
  • MsKirksey4 Feb 20 @ 8:34 PM EST
I’ve thought about it, but I haven’t tried yet. It’s mostly verbal, but writing their goals out can definitely be more meaningful to them. I just try this! #5thchat
    In reply to @teachchoice
  • msweisenbeck Feb 20 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4- Wow, @teachchoice , these are good ?s! Many of my Ss eat lunch with me everyday and we call it a working lunch. (I've always worked thru lunch.- They come to work on a quest or choice assignment.) They've ?ed my focus on my plans/tasks. I tell them its for me. #5thchat
  • yenneam Feb 20 @ 8:37 PM EST
A5 My own two children are one of each - one intrinsic, one extrinsic. Finding what drives each of them through relationship, conversation, and observation makes the most sense to me. #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Feb 20 @ 8:37 PM EST
A5- I do think there can be a mix of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. I learn for me, but I sure like it when there is a goody involved (like chocolate!). I think my students are beginning to see the benefits of their growth by their successes. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Feb 20 @ 8:39 PM EST
Interesting fact...even for adults a financial increase in salary only drive motivation for 14 days! Building their desire for growth will get them satisfaction in their career a lot longer than anything else! #5thchat
    • msweisenbeck Feb 20 @ 8:37 PM EST

  • MontanaMcIntyr1 Feb 20 @ 8:39 PM EST
A5: I think it depends on how much the extrinsic motivation is actually impacting their drive to succeed. Motivation should always come from within the students. The extrinsic benefit should be the second factor in not only completing the task, but excelling #5thchat
  • teachchoice Feb 20 @ 8:40 PM EST
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:40 PM EST
A5: Tough question- a negative or positive impact for every student depends on the student. Transforming the mentality of "what's in it for me"trying to always make it about what you can do for others, classroom community helps with this but still working on #5thchat
  • msweisenbeck Feb 20 @ 8:40 PM EST
I have nightly "Game Night" with my kids, and each night,I have a large # that participates, and that # keeps growing. There is not reward for playing other than the fun of it! Ss learn- its all related to what we study. They boast when they improve scores! #5thchat
  • whispermode Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4: Absolutely! Asking students to reflect on their work, as well as mine, provides invaluable feedback and critique. #5thchat #rm222
  • MontanaMcIntyr1 Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
A6: I think the best tool for motivating students intrinsically, is to get engaged and excited with them. Making them feel like what they are doing/learning matters, will make them feel like it is more important #5thchat
  • shammanaj Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5 I steer away from rewards. Ss sometimes need help to recognize feeling of satisfaction in a job well done & rewards negate that #5thchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 20 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5: I try to limit the amount of extrinsic rewards. My goal for my daughter is to help her find something that she loves to do, so that she can be in that space of high focus, high energy, high effort, and low stress. #5thchat
  • whispermode Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
This is awesome. What was the solution? How did the Ss present their findings? #5thchat
    In reply to @PaulSolarz, @JuliaGalvanSTEM
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
A5: extrinsic motivation has the ability to lead to intrinsic learning/motivation, especially in the Ss where self confidence is a challenge. I use teacher picnic a lot, they can share their win with a trear, while chatting with me and growing their sense of self worth. #5thchat
  • yenneam Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
A6 Figuring out what Ss currency is. Allowing them to tell me what they need to find motivation, rewarding it, and slowly backing away from it. All of that done transparently, so that they know what we're working to build. No tricks. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:42 PM EST
A6 - My most powerful strategy is that we talk about extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation and how rewards and grades can get you to do things, but that sometimes it's best to do things because it's the right thing to do, even though there's no prize at the end. #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6: Morning meetings and class discussion is my greatest tool for this! Having students share thoughts, feelings, wins, and losses puts things into perspective for all involved! #5thchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 20 @ 8:44 PM EST
A6: Empower students to spend time on the things they want to focus on – the stuff they love. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Feb 20 @ 8:47 PM EST
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:48 PM EST
A6: talking to students, finding out what they love, how they learn, that I am there to help them, be someone they can believe in #5thchat
  • whispermode Feb 20 @ 8:48 PM EST
A6: Strategy? It has to be student voice and choice - Tool? Using a culture of critique in everything we do surrounding that voice and choice. #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:49 PM EST
Village ended up creating a 3-month walking route for a police officer to talk w/ the teens every day after school about making good choices & respecting kids & customers. They were there every evening & on the weekends until winter hit! Teens didn't come back next year! #5thchat
    In reply to @whispermode, @JuliaGalvanSTEM
  • msweisenbeck Feb 20 @ 8:49 PM EST
A7- Geinus Hour/Passion projects- Ss 💕 this time! They also really like when they can choose how to learn or share their learning! #5thchat
  • Dale_Chu Feb 20 @ 8:50 PM EST
A7: Students need to have a sense of control over their learning and are energetic about directing their learning in the direction they want to go. #5thchat
  • teachchoice Feb 20 @ 8:50 PM EST
Anyone read "Thanks for the Feedback"? #5thchat Love the culture of critique...

A7- GENIUS HOUR! Gets Ss exploring their passions, connecting with experts, owning their learning, developing connections, and becoming not only 21st century Ss but citizens #5thchat
  • JuliaGalvanSTEM Feb 20 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7: try to help them find out about themselves and share with others, if they show interest/passion for something, let them teach it, use it in how they learn #5thchat
  • MsBazar5th Feb 20 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7: I make it a point to know my Ss so I can make book recommendations based on interests. Creating book clubs so they can discuss and research certain topics based on shared interest. Incorporate them into math stories, making the student “part” of the lesson! #5thchat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Feb 20 @ 8:51 PM EST
A7 - We're all about Passion Projects in our classroom! Twice each week for an hour ALL year long! :) Here are all of my Passion Time/#GeniusHour resources: https://t.co/3EWeqBeVMQ Step-by-Step Directions, Sample Projects, Videos, Blog Posts, etc.! #5thchat

A7: S passion is often found unexpectedly. Today I asked Ss to read a @Newsela article on DNA- When it was all over they were all frantically researching ebola which led to plague, then to mad cow disease. I just realized I may have some budding epidemiologists in #rm222 #5thchat
