I think when you keep the focus on the students..it’s a common goal that everyone can get behind! There will always be colleagues/people who “do not get along” but that is where professionalism should come into play and reminders that we “lead by example”.. #bfc530

Teachers should feel comfortable collaborating - sharing ideas, coming to each other with questions, watching each other teach. Throw in support from admin and the occasional social gathering, and you have a good start. #bfc530

You must find a way to speak up/out against the things that you don't agree with, or they will become the norm and part of the culture. This may include voicing a way to make said thing better, instead of eliminating. #bfc530
People need to develop positive relationships with each other in a low stress, low pressure atmosphere. Just as true for dynamics among colleagues as it is between teachers and students. #bfc530
I work in a wonderful school environment b/c for 16 yrs our previous principal treated us like professionals along w/the axiom "family 1st, teaching 2nd" Encourages you to give your best #bfc530

My school has been known for years for its supportive tight-knit staff, but hard to say how to create that.
I think it's due to the type of school we are. The type of teacher that comes to teach our kids.

We can listen for common values—even if our experiences, interests, and practices are different—and thus find new allies, partners, and mentors. Instead of narrowing our repertoire to “best” practices everyone must use, we can expand & diversify our collective repertoire.

Indeed...it's a culture thing. And as @GruntledChalkie said, it needs to start with a common vision of excellence. That helps drive the trust, the passion, the common focus on whatever it takes to be the best for the students. What every school should be about. #bfc530

I think this is truly most places. This is why I come here, frankly. It’s a safe place for me to get and receive positive PD. So far no one in #bfc530 has thrown me under the bus to gain favor. 😉
That's so important !! My school used to be like that as well. Teaching and parenting has been increasingly harder to pull off at the same time over the past few years. Ppl need to understand they can't call last minute meetings when u have kids #bfc530

I always work hard, but I worked hardest doing extras for a P who valued me and my family. He understood how important they are to me and would let me go watch their sport bc he knew I more than did the work. #bfc530
You're right. There's no perfect formula, no guarantee that if you do this you'll get that. Some schools just organically end up with positive, supportive environments. People recognize that and stay around. Other people see it and want to come. Magic. #bfc530

Agreed. When the family front is under control, it allows you to focus better your students at school. I think good admins understand that. One thing I hate is teachers who take advantage of admins graciousness in this area #bfc530

#BFC530 There are several ways to keep the morale up for teachers whole year through, having a school blog to regularly share success stories of teachers in classrooms, sharing the blog with parents, having coffee time with teachers where they openly share ideas etc

Yes, it can. Value & respect are developed over time. Otherwise it is a dog a pony show during the honeymoon period. It will take the leader time to model this expectation to staff. More importantly, they will be watching for consistency. With time, it can be sustainable. #bfc530
Goes a long way! Our admins all line up in the front office to shake our hands and thank us on teacher appreciation. Little gesture that goes a long way!

I new a woman once in a rather menial job. She told me her boss gave her hot cross buns at easter. you can tell that this gesture positively painted her view of the workplace #bfc530
Trust, honesty, & transparency from my former principal really set the tone for a well- connected community. There was a sense of pride, dedication, & a sense of belonging that resonated w/all including staff, students, & parents. #bfc530
Principals who are confident about themselves, have no insecurities, encourage their teachers, create an environment where their ideas are valued, supported during initiatives, taken on board while making decisions results in a positive environment #BFC530

Admin: don't micromanage staff, remember to have fun, not everything has to be data driven. Teachers: HAVE FUN, don't be territorial, don't be afraid to try something new & above all, we have the same goal: our students come first. #bfc530
