#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
Welcome to #LeadUpChat! We are continuing our series Upstream: Facing The Currents with your moderator @tsschmidty! Please introduce yourself and whether you have even been white water rafting!
Kids need second chances. You do, too.
Feb can be tough. It’s easy for us to convince ourselves we are falling short.
But many of those measures are myths. Check out Shattering the Perfect #TeacherMyth to expose those myths >> https://t.co/LgYpZsP3El#TLAP#LeadLAP#LeadUpChat
Hi #leadupchat! I am your host this week! Todd, elem principal in CA, and this is a pic of me when I was 13 and ejecting out of a white water raft! That's my dad with the beard in the front seeing me fly in the air!
Good morning! Keri from MO - I have not been white water rafting. And at this moment, I can't really decide if that is something I would want to do! #leadupchat
Welcome to #LeadUpChat! We are continuing our series Upstream: Facing The Currents with your moderator @tsschmidty! Please introduce yourself and whether you have even been white water rafting!
Good morning #leadupchat! Dan, ES Principal in Houston. I’ve been white water rafting, but it was many years ago; good memories of being bounced around.
Hey #leadupchat Ben AP in Reno NV -stoked to be living in the west & the Sierra's so Yeah I've been flipped out of a raft a few times & a kayak & from a float tube & maybe just jumped in the whitewatter for fun
Jonathan, from Northern Cali and love white water rafting! Worked at a summer camp in Idaho where I taught kids and loved every minute of it #leadupchat
Morning. Angelo, HS Principal from NC! I love white water rafting and am fortunately to live by the US National Whitewater Center.
After I brought my school's leadership team there five years ago, I wrote a blog about it: https://t.co/oCSprt7Wv5#leadupchat
Good morning! Stacey, pk-8 principal from Kansas. I've never been white water rafting! Several great trips down the river, but none to be rated as white water rafting! #leadupchat
Jason Ness. Cochrane, Canada. Learning Design Specialist with Rocky View Schools #rvsed Have rafted the Upper Kicking Horse River in BC many times. Always a blast! #LeadUpChat
Top of the morning to my favorite tribe of educators! My new book is out! Available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle today! Burned Out, Beaten Up, & Fighting Back: A Call to Action for America's Public Educators https://t.co/hxtVgymnho#leadupchat#call2action4ed
Good morning! Amy from Central Valley in Cali. Our PC takes a rafting trip in the early summer. More floating that white water but fun for Fs. #leadupchat
Bridget from Woodstock, IL. I've never been rafting, but some days my office feels like the rapids. And lately I feel like I've been drowning in my work. Using Saturday morning chats as a recharger! #leadupchat
A1: I'm not sure about a "clunker" but I have had an initiative challenge my beliefs and the work I was doing. I spent lots of time thinking, investigating, and talking with other about finding the common pieces. That helped! #leadupchat
A1 I have been fortunate to work in a decentralized district. I have not been "stuck" to often, but at the end of the day is really just you and the kids so do what you must, change what you can, control what you can control. #leadupchat
A1: Continue to share the WHY and how the initiative doesn’t fit what’s best for kids, but also not let it deter our focus and cause negativity. #leadupchat
A1) If it's not worth doing and you can get away with not doing it, don't do it. Sometimes you have to make that call and absorb the consequences for your staff and students. (Sorry, CO folks.)
#leadupchat
A1: Is ignore it or slowly nod then do something else an option? No then I think you work with it the best you can. For example if I was forced to use Accelerated Reader or Star (just an example) I would likely comply but would not use the data for my own assessment #leadupchat
Yes - and you have to give it some time. When this happened to me I questioned whether or not I should even stay in my district - but I allowed my core to guide me and I took the time I need to figure it all out. #leadupchat
A1: Seek to understand the why! What does the research say about it? I often find that it’s just that I don’t understand it yet, and while it might not be my idea of a winning solution, I have to trust those leading the district. #leadupchat
A1 As the only SRO in my district, there are times that I get put into a plan where I shouldn’t be. The goal is to educate on my role, what I can and cannot do, while maintaining or building a relationship w those around me. #leadupchat
A1: You do what's best for kids! We have to be the voice for our students and teachers as administrators. If something isn't working, we do what we can to make it work! Might have to add our own spare tire or as the old mtv show was "pimp my ride!" #leadupchat
A1: I am very fortunate to work in a district where this doesn't happen often. When it does, I keep the main thing in mind in all decisions-whats best for kids. Stay positive and focus on what I can control. #leadupchat
A1 I'm a subversive teacher. I just do what I think is right. Follow when you have to, take your own path when you can, and choose carefully which hills to die on. #SorryNotSorry#leadupchat
A1 Even though the initiative may be, parts of it may not. We try to breakdown the pieces of each new idea, engage in dialogue about how we can implement it to best serve our school, and reflect on what has gone well and what has not #leadupchat
A1. One size does not fit all in most cases. To do what is best for kids and their learning sometimes the task has to be adapted for what is best for a campus. This is where a strong leader steps up and leads. #LeadUpChat
A1: Is ignore it or slowly nod then do something else an option? No then I think you work with it the best you can. For example if I was forced to use Accelerated Reader or Star (just an example) I would likely comply but would not use the data for my own assessment #leadupchat
A1: The first and most important thing is to keep doing what’s best for students. Also try to improve or refine the initiative to form a more viable plan. Work with building level and district level staff. Don’t be afraid to share your ideas for improvement. #leadupchat#edchat
A1 Despite clunker initiatives, we must continue to focus on best practices and providing authentic learning for students. Staying optimistic and joyful for the opportunity to shape lives is critical to keep a healthy heartbeat in school. #leadupchat
A1-Always seek out student voice and choice. Students know how to improve any initiative. Most times they have better feedback than adults. 2 positives to every negative! #leadupchat
Not sure I'd say it was good. It was an evaluation system that challenged my beliefs and work about curriculum and instruction. It's okay now - but I really had to navigate those waters carefully. #leadupchat
When the district mandates a "clunker" idea I still assume that someone there wants to help kids. I figure out how my school can do the "essence" of the mandate without changing course dramatically. #leadupchat
A1: Speak truth to power. Hopefully it’s done for the right reasons, but if not, we need to respectfully disagree and make a case for an alternative. Won’t row the boat backwards, but civil dialogue & a moral imperative for doing better should be everyone’s norm. #leadupchat
A1: I think it’s all about finding people to collaborate with to make it happen in a way that fits your vision. This is what we have to do, but how can we work together to do it better? #leadupchat#wildcatcorridor
A1: When the district mandates a "clunker" idea I still assume that someone there wants to help kids. I figure out how my school can do the "essence" of the mandate without changing course dramatically. #leadupchat
A1: If "clunker" means it's a good idea but not going well, it's probably due to implementation failure. Dig in and figure out what is missing. Do we need more PD, more time, site visits, idea sharing? Do I just need to let Ts vent? I might figure out the problem then #leadupchat
Kids shouldn't feel the need to be compliant. If that is the case we need to be looking at the task at hand. I am paid, compliance is sometimes the name of the game. On the other hand my kids are a captive audience I need to do my best to avoid their compliance. #leadupchat
Like this approach, Heather. When we consult the research on new practices, we are able to dig into areas where the initiative has gone well and apply those lessons to our own schools #leadupchat
A1) As a leader it's your job to listen to people, encourage them to problem solve, & be their voice at the central office. make the initiative work on your campus, the way it best fits. You can be the voice of your building in arespectful & solutions focused manner. #leadupchat
A1: Stay positive and stay the course! Sometimes the rationale isn't transparent, but we have to trust our leaders to put us in the best situations to generate growth. #EDU5720#LeadUpChat@JMcCarthyEdS
A1. I believe it is important for educators to define success for themselves, in away that aligns with their beliefs and philosophies, rather than allowing success to defined for them by mandates and demands that narrow that definition. #leadupchat
A1.
Leaders see issues b4 others and must often wait for (build) others to recognize & want to do something about it.
#management or #leadership#leadupchat
A1 keep students in the forefront and see what we can take as a learning moment. Sometimes I make it my own leadership challenge for how I roll it out and incorporate it into what we are doing #leadupchat
A1) On another note, if there's not choice but to do it, it's the leader's job to figure out how to embed it with what's already being done so that it is minimally interruptive to what's already happening.
#leadupchat
A1 get creative-how are you going to make this work for your site & vision? sometimes you need to paddle harder in another direction to get it going again #leadupchat
And as sad as it is to say, those of us with tenure protections (what's left of it anyway), have to be the ones to speak truth to power. Those protections are being stripped quickly. #leadupchat
A1: Speak truth to power. Hopefully it’s done for the right reasons, but if not, we need to respectfully disagree and make a case for an alternative. Won’t row the boat backwards, but civil dialogue & a moral imperative for doing better should be everyone’s norm. #leadupchat
A1: when initiatives role out that miss the mark for Ss or Ts, the trust and transparency developed needs to be exercised and folks need to be able to share their thoughts about why “this” may not be what we need. #leadupchat
A1: You figure out what you can and can not control. Depending on role, this level is different. Try to support those effective in the best way possible and find the positive. #leadupchat
A1: Continue to push information , data and facts to the powers that the initiative is not what is best for kids. I have found that if you keep the conversation about kids people listen .#leadupchat
Become a part of the solution if you see it as something that truly doesn't fit. As @alicekeeler says, "Don't complain about your students (DO) change the lesson plan (initiative)". #leadupchat
A1: why not take the risk and give it a try. Get the data and if it doesn't meet the mark work with your team to make it work in your environment. When higher ups question show them both pieces of evidences.
#leadupchat
Good call! The “spirit” of that initiative was probably born out of good intentions. Live out that spirit and the initiative probably won’t be so clunky after all. 👍🏻 #leadupchat
If it is a site based "clunker," collaborate with stakeholders, analyze the data, and make a decision to modify or let it sink! If is district based, I think it is important to dialogue with district initiators for feedback, clarification, & to share your experience. #leadupchat
Making it fit our school vision is key, Lorrah. Often, we are not able to just apply the initiative as it comes out of the box. We have to consider our different school contexts and move forward from there #leadupchat
Become a part of the solution if you see it as something that truly doesn't fit. As @alicekeeler says, "Don't complain about your students (DO) change the lesson plan (initiative)". #leadupchat
A1b. We also have an obligation to do our own homework. We can't fight bad initiatives if we can't support why they are bad. #researchmatters#leadupchat
A1 a couple of wise leaders once told me its OK to say NO-if its not the right fit for you're staff/students/families then stand up-but have a plan to show why #leadupchat
A1) Great question! Many of us have felt “trapped” at some point in our careers. Model, lead and disrupt what you can. There are times when you may need to get a new vehicle/district. #Leadupchat
A1: If a clunker is a bad idea, I need to hear voices of the Ts and articulate that in admin team mtgs. In a small unit district, we don't really get ideas shoved at us without lots of input from all. The clunkers are when we don't implement well. Lack of resources #leadupchat
Negativity is a contagious disease in schools when educators don't like something. Being professional by carrying on with best interest of kids as our destination. #leadupchat
#Leadupchat A1 That’s a true conundrum! Use your voice to advocate for what’s right, adapt(if possible) to fit the needs of your school—and when all else fails, pray it will be short lived!
I have noticed it is helpful to at least skim thru Edweek & ASCD daily so I understand the why's. It's easier to jump on board. But many Ts are overwhelmed & have no time. #leadupchat
You know - when we don't like an initiative - it's an awesome opportunity to grow and model for our students. If we get upset and throw fits how can we expect our students to do any better? Sometimes we engage in behavior we wouldn't tolerate from kids. #leadupchat
A1 get creative-how are you going to make this work for your site & vision? sometimes you need to paddle harder in another direction to get it going again #leadupchat
A1) Last thought, it's the school leader's duty to speak up if they truly believe an initiative has no merit.
There should be almost no district initiatives started without including the teachers/principals in the vetting process.
#leadupchat
A1. It requires courage to professionally push back, not for the sake of rebellion, but because practitioners are the closest to the classroom and their input should be valued! #leadupchat
Teachers, like students, aren’t always going to like what they have to do.
If you depend on liking every part of the job to have a good attitude, you will never make it. #LeadUpChat
There’s a danger in it too. Just closing your door leaves you isolated & lacking multiple perspectives. We aren’t the only ones who care or want what’s best for kids. Assuming so is dangerous for our kids. #leadupchat#theteachersjourney
A1: We can look at the "opportunities" within the initiative. Rather than complaints and stressors, opportunities and challenges that will accelerate growth. #leadupchat
A1: Districts and site administrations should be allowed a clunker once in a while. They need to take risks too and try new things. Hopefully they do it with good intentions.
#leadupchat
A2: Ask for input and feedback in the beginning and throughout implementation. Keep the stakeholders involved. Communicate early and often. #leadupchat
A2: explain the why, and your energy is contagious. If you have built the street cred and relationships, people will be willing to try and jump in with you #leadupchat
SOOOOOO Many Ts want to be #Unleashed to do what they love and rekindle the joy of teaching and learning. Leaders must seek ways to support and nudge these Ts to be fearless and know they can have fun again! #leadupchat
A1: Find ways to connect the district initiative to your school's mission & vision. There are always connections that can be made. Equally as important, is our role, as school leaders, to advocate for what is working and to acknowledge, through feedback, what is not. #leadupchat
A2 you start off by selling to a few of the key staff, then let them sell it to the rest. Once the reluctant teachers see that it's working, they'll hop in #leadupchat
I agree with Keeler, but depending on your role and the “hierarchy” of your organization- there are times when you don’t have a say. In those instances- it’s hard, but try to stick to your purpose & supporting kids. #leadupchat
A1: Site leadership is also key here. How is the new initiative being implemented in accord with the school's vision? How much oversight are you experiencing? Is your administration looking for feedback? Are they willing to change the initiative to meet real needs? #leadupchat
A2: We must share the why behind it first, but then reward and recognize those who jump on board! As a leader, I choose to tend to the flowers and not get lost in the weeds! #leadupchat
My admins & district are all out for Ss. We can discuss research, observations & work as a team. I know everyone doesn't have that but it's possible to get there. #leadupchat
A1: When you don't agree with the initiative. Revisit it's purpose. Many times the strategy might need to be adjusted, but the goal could still be kept. Maybe it's a chance to learn from failure - but keep trying. #leadupchat
A2) This starts long before any initiative is put on the table. It relies on the culture you create in your building. When people feel heard, have trust, & know u have their backs...they'll put the life jacket on & try. #leadupchat
A2: I believe that excitement is contagious! If you have those hanging back a bit, answer their questions, share what's working, invite them in to watch you do your magic! #leadupchat
A2: We have to be real - people will know if we don't buy in! So first - find your own why. Then embody that and share with others. If you are passionate and excited - others will be too! #leadupchat
A2: You need to be excited. I find that my Ss excitement is directly related to my own. #leadupchat Probably why things I dislike in the education world my kids dislike as well.
A2: You have to be excited about it for others to be excited. Model what you want. Explain the “why” of it. Take time to hear their concerns. I sometimes throw out the “what if we just gave it a whirl first?” #leadupchat
A2: This is were the rubber meets the road, right? Again, the “why” is the most important piece to get colleagues to adopt. When the why is not powerful enough, there may be a bigger problem to address. #leadupchat
A2: it's important to communicate the why initially and clearly! Showing them how it impacts them and helping them understand the why leads to all the excitement you need to get buy-in! If they don't see the why then they immediately grasp the "I'm not"! #leadupchat
A2 ~ Focus the conversation on how the initiative will improve S learning & understanding ~ and hopefully make the lives of Ts better! The benefits for Ss should be the “talk of the building!” #leadupchat
A2) Excitement is an emotion. If you want people to get excited, you have to introduce things in an emotionally stimulating way. Stories, videos, short trips, and action are better than just telling people what's going to happen.
#leadupchat
A2: in order to get folks excited, I count on knowing where they fall on the innovation bell curve. Are they quick to innovate or do they require some “coaxing”? Bring the innovators and early adopters along first, highlighting success and the others will follow. #leadupchat
A2-Give staff and students the opportunity to share ideas, express concerns, and ask questions. Before a challenge, we must have some norms/rules. When discussing the challenge, what do we want our discussions to look like, sound like, and feel like? #leadupchat
A2: Always make new challenges relevant to our students and colleagues. How will they benefit from taking the risk? What might happen if they don't? It's not a risk worth taking if the benefits are not readily apparent. #leadupchat
A2: Appeal the both the Elephant and the Rider #switch by Chip and Dan Heath. "You've got to influence not only their environment, but their hearts and minds." #leadupchat#EDU5720@JMcCarthyEdS
A2 We need to make it look like the dancing guy on the hill. Start with support from respected faculty and watch others join in. We always have to show the 'why' and 'how' it is best for students. #leadupchat
A2: Break out the chart paper, markers, paint and glitter! Have Ss create their own Dystopian Worlds. They are all in the boat with you! LOL #leadupchat
A2: in order to get folks excited, I count on knowing where they fall on the innovation bell curve. Are they quick to innovate or do they require some “coaxing”? Bring the innovators and early adopters along first, highlighting success and the others will follow. #leadupchat
A2: Approach these initiatives as opportunities to solution solve with your school teams. Find ways to bring in your teacher leaders and early adopters. Pilot, if possible. Exploit opportunities to celebrate small victories. Momentum will follow! #leadupchat
Totally true! If I don't buy into something, even if I try to hide it, my kids and staff also don't buy in. We're all intuitive even if we don't know it. #leadupchat
A2: It starts with trust and communication. There is never enough communication. When it seems like communication is happening-it probably isn't - do more. Lesson learned again yesterday. #LeadUpChat
Teachers do tend to be a fearful group. I find that it all has to do with how you approach people. Relationships matter everywhere. They're the key to classroom management, but they're the key to coworkers and higher-ups as well. #leadupchat
A2: look at the bigger picture. It's important to take the process step by step. When you're drumming up excitement you need to be able to present a vision of what has not yet come to be. When you are able to see the ultimate goal & understand the process...watch out
#leadupchat
A2: Tie it back to how this will help kids. Find your first followers rather than force the masses. Build capacity in those who are ready (and on the cusp), then let their excitement bring others along. #leadupchat
A2. Plan with the end in mind. It’s important that everyone knows how this work is going to positively impact our students academic achievement and well-being. #leadupchat
A2 be honest & communicate early-expect & welcome some skepticism & be ready to counter with how this supports vision & goals & is going to not be one more thing #leadupchat
A2: Bring my excitement! Start with a question, video clip or real life connection to get the room buzzing. Make the challenge real to the Ss world. #leadupchat
Hey #leadupchat - You are on my wavelength today! I wrote my answer to Q1 in a blog post this morning: https://t.co/m9MSmn0AvT - Excited to jump in and get more ideas from you!
A2: Ask good questions. Collaborate with team to innovate creative solutions. Collectively reassess for continuous improvement. #leadupchat | As @Locke_STEAM says...
A2: Depending on the challenge, excitement can be cultivated by:
1. A hard look at the misery or failure that the current way is causing.
2. Clear goals about what the change is expected to provide.
3. Start small and let the word spread organically.
#leadupchat
A2: explain the why, and your energy is contagious. If you have built the street cred and relationships, people will be willing to try and jump in with you #leadupchat
A2. Excitement is rooted in empowerment. When people feel empowered their competence is raised, they own their learning, and have more confidence in themselves and the work. That’s exciting! #leadupchat
A2 We frame new challenges as opportunities for S growth and occasions that will help our team members growth their professional toolkit. We work to constantly affirm our team during changes to help motivate them to continue through the challenge #leadupchat
Great point, here. When you involve teachers in the development process, that "leaks" into the building and a buzz starts to happen weeks before it's even brought-up.
#leadupchat
A2: If you want them to be excited about it, they need to be a part of building it. Know your team, listen, bring them in by using their strengths and interests and giving them choice in how they will move forward #leadupchat
A2: We also need to KNOW about the initiative. It's not enough to share it and the why can't be "because we have to." We have to know it, understand the why, and be willing to live it! #leadupchat
Exactly, we never need to be alone. We shouldn’t be isolated, antiquated advice like that leads to burnout, isolation, deviciveness. #LeadUpChat#theteachersjourney
A1: I always find out the "why" and how other schools have made lemonade with the program/initiative and then we do our best to make it useful #leadupchat
A2. Have a really strong "why" connected with your challenge and involve your team in the process. Connection leads to buy in which leads to learning and then to shifts. #LeadUpChat
A2. Invest "people of influence" in the initiative by including them in the learning, conversation & implementation. Passion breeds passion! Allow team members to get on board at their own pace as we all respond to change at different paces. #LeadUpChat
So true-- if a few people adopt something first and can have success, others will follow. Strong implementation in a few places is better than weak implementation in lots of places. #leadupchat
Agree, Ben. The communication component is essential as we navigate new challenges. As ed leaders, we have a responsibility to keep our team informed, so that they will be prepared for new shifts #leadupchat
A2: as a ldr, be honest with urself and realize not all staff may be excited in the beginning. Capitalize on the staff that are. It’s not about where you start...focus on where you want to finish. #leadupchat
A2 you have to have already built a culture of trust. You can’t just expect it to happen. And please change buy in to #believein. Change the word change the meaning @KarenCopeland3#Leadupchat
A2: An effective way to get stakeholders excited about a challenge is to start by asking them what the challenge should be. They aren't "hooked" in on challenge, they CREATE it #leadupchat
Because there has to be a culture of trust. Your folks need to trust that you have their best interest in mind always and that you wouldn't lead them astray. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A1: New initiatives just about always have good intentions; when working with them we have to remember this. Share the intention with kids; when they believe in us, they’ll believe in the intent of our initiatives (as challenging/frustrating as they may be at times). #LeadUpChat
Absolutely! It’s knowing their needs that allows me to address the change differently for each group. Each requires a different level of support and time for the change. #leadupchat
A2: By making this the backbone of prof learning. Take sit & get sessions & staff meetings masquerading as PL off the plate. Build collab & prof sharing into the fabric of PL. Alter culture!! #leadupchat Gr8 article on this here: https://t.co/0kFAJ64irm
A2. The key is making sure you approach the challenge w/ your team in a way that empowers, gives them the support & resources they need to accomplish the goals, & structure the work for success. Folks aren’t motivated by a list of consequences if they don’t succeed. #leadupchat
A2: Find ways to make the learning relevant to Ts or Ss. Create opportunities to share ideas and celebrate small victories. Begin with the end in mind, but allow different paths to get there. What applies to Ss, applies to adult learners, too! Momentum will follow! #leadupchat
A2: Jumping in late.... I love this because it is so important to the growth of any team. Be clear and concise, be excited and be all in. Your work will pay off in the end. Remind yourself not to get bogged down with unnecessary distractions. #leadupchat
You have to be invested in THEIR success, and have that network solidified BEFORE asking to leap into the boat. #leadupchat Supportive leadership enables future innovation.
#truth Most people will accept change when they know its coming-know how it will effect them & know why it's important-change for change sake never works #leadupchat
A3: Co-create the initiative! Use empathy to identify and define the problem together. Brainstorm solutions together. Divide up the work together. Implement together. Reflect together. Change together. #leadupchat
A3: Want everyone going in the same direction? It’s about having the right mindset and attitude. It’s about everyone knowing which direction we’re supposed to be going. It’s about everyone believing in that direction. #leadupchat
A3: We have to engage in ongoing conversations. Can just present once and be done - and we have to be willing to hear it all - the good and the bad and work through it together. #leadupchat
A3: “Everyone” at the same time may be tough. Just like students, adults start at their own point A, and need different support to get to their own point B. Can only be accomplished by knowing our people. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3: I don’t think this is possible. It takes 5 years to fully implement an initiative. Honestly, have accountability plans and don’t lose sight when the currents hit. Keep paddling. Nothing is worse than a new initiative every year. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3. It begins during the goal setting and continues during frequent and purposeful PLC meetings where teamwork keeps everyone on the same page and pulling in a common direction. #Leadupchat
A2: Don’t set out for “buy in” which only seems like a passive form of acceptance. Set out to find how the new challenge can fit in to each person’s personal vision. #LeadUpChat
A3: Frequent communication. Check in, check in, check in. Support through obstacles. Be ready with a life preserver, warm towels and raft repair kit. Growth is risky and often messy. #leadupchat
A3 And never ever ever use the phrase "with fidelity." People need room to tweak and fiddle with new ideas to internalize them. "With fidelity"="initiative killer" #leadupchat
I think an important consideration is the strategic decision making that goes on before launching into new waters. It’s more about getting the right WHO in place before considering HOW to get them in the boat. #leadupchat
A3: You seem to have it under control in the raft. I don't know if you ever get 100% but you can't waiver if key players agree that it is right. If it is right for kids it is right and push through. #leadupchat
True, but I think the choice can come in when we we come together to figure out how we are going to implement. Finding creative solutions to unpopular initiatives can empower us to get on board #leadupchat
#LeadUpChat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3: It is important to allow room for cognitive dissonance, in the beginning. Eventually, you can begin to paddle in the same direction, but only if you allow others to share where they are starting--and, you need to be patient and comfortable in that space, too. #leadupchat
A3-Begins with relationships. If people trust you, know the why, and help in discovering the way, they will paddle with you. Set up mentoring for both teachers and staff. Give a sinker the opportunity to share with a paddler his thoughts. Bring it back to the group! #leadupchat
A3. In my district I am the “expert” in school safety. There are always those who questions “why.” It is important to be honest and forthcoming w everything. We are all in the same boat, NO ONE wants to sink! #leadupchat
A3: Play to individual strengths and generate a need for their participation and input. This way, everyone feels included and all ideas are welcomed. #LeadUpChat#EDU5720

A3 there needs to be an open balance of teamwork and individualism so folks can try an initiative and tweak parts if they see something that will enhance the initiative. Then they need to bring it back for the good of all...cycles of improvement #leadupchat
A3: You determine what their strengths are! Although we want to paddle together (end goal) we may have to offer different size paddles or some may just have to be guides of play other important parts. Then we have to keep some on board in case others get tired! #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3: Sometimes you need more than one boat, some initiatives do not compliment a teachers style and they are doing just fine down the river. I think we need there to be multiple options to the end goal of student success and positive school culture. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3) There's a lot that goes into this answer. Here's a few:
1) People who will never paddle in the same direction as the raft need to find another raft.
2) The people in the raft need to be given a clear goal.
3) Leaders must model the paddling they want to see.
#leadupchat

#leadupchat
A3: In order to get them paddling in the same direction, we need to get them facing the same direction. Always start by getting them talking about it first, provide the why, show them how, then ask them to paddle with us! #leadupchat#1stedu
A3- Make sure everyone understands what to do and the importance of the job. Praise and redirect efforts along the way. The Why should be clear. Celebrate successes! #leadupchat
A3 Be transparent and open. When a strong culture is in place, it makes it easier to get everyone going in the same direction. Celebrate successes and risk-taking. Be supportive and as a leader, get in the trenches with your staff. #LeadUpChat
A2: Every leader either borrows influence or earns it. When people give you permission to lead in their lives because of your actions, you’ve earned influence. When people give you permission to lead in their lives because of your words, you’ve borrowed influence. #leadupchat
I use this so often when having conversations with folks on my team and throughout the district. We can only really impact what we can control. The rest just sucks our energy! #leadupchat
A2: If our classrooms are built on the foundations of a solid family - safety, togetherness, compassion, hard work, forgiveness & love - students will assume joint new challenges with excitement as an opportunity to pursue and grow together. #LeadUpChat
I sure agree with your comment. Changes in the team can play havoc with staying the course. We used LiveBinders to keep all of the resources in one place so as team members changed everyone could access the same materials.

#leadupchat
A3: To get everyone in the same direction, tart by getting a few strong teacher-leaders on board, and let teachers lead each other while you support, keep reiterating the "why," and publicly recognize strong implementation. #leadupchat
While everyone may not be paddling at the same speed, there are definitely times where people are actively fighting against you...what do we do in those instances?
#leadupchat
A3) Start w the willing, & share out successes. Communicate that you are just that, a TEAM, & that they aren't expected to figure things out alone. Connect the dots, the why. Honor the time people put into new initiatives. #leadupchat
A3: Have a clear goal where everyone has a clear role and pathway to achievement. It helps when everyone understands why they are important to the success. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!

#leadupchat
So true! We build trust when our decisions are seen as aligned to the shared mission and vision. Note the intentional use of the word shared. 😊 #leadupchat
A3. Adults need structure and clear expectations just as much as students do. If we only give them half a plan to work with why should we be surprised when we only get half a result? #leadupchat
A3: Frequent checks on progress is one way to ensure everyone is paddling in the right direction and nobody got lost or took a different path along the way. Don't rely on "Back in August we said...." #leadupchat
A2: In the book "Shift" one great strategy shared is to seek out and highlight bright spots that can be shared to show how others are having success with same challenge #leadupchat
A3: Give support/encouragement to Ts and Ss along the way-->this is often times more meaningful in the long run than the actual initiative. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3: communication! Communicate the direction in large groups, small groups and one on one. Let folks know what’s expected and as we inspect what we expect, we highlight the early success and allow Ts to learn from one another. #leadupchat
A3: Thinking about Fullan’s book The Principal...leaders create the conditions and support. The most powerful teams come when they take ownership of making sure they are paddling in the same direction! #leadupchat
A3 Be excited! Share the excitement! Communicate often about how it’s going and be willing to make tweaks if necessary. Provide encouragement and offer support. Do what it takes to make it successful. #leadupchat
Also forgetting about putting in to place ongoing support systems to help. Just handing teachers/students devices isn’t a plan. Need to think of end users. #leadupchat
A2: Leadership is influence, and the best kind of influence comes when people give you permission to lead in their lives based on your actions. If you want to get real influence, you have to get busy—and earn it from the people you lead. #leadupchat
A3 be okay with most, intially. Share the purpose, goal, and how this helps teachers and students. Anything new should make school easier and better. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A3: first work as a team to create the initiative. Then as a school leader just listen as your team dissect it. We can't make everyone happy but we can make sure we are helping understand the why. Why we think this is what is best for kids, are team, and our mission.
#leadupchat
I totally agree...new initiatives every year make even the most seasoned staffs exhausted and unwilling...really need to be purposeful with what we introduce.
#leadupchat
A3 Do we all want to paddle in the same direction? As with rafting, teamwork doesn't always mean the same direction. Success in initiatives must include challenges and some folks leading in different directions headed toward the same destination. #leadupchat
A3... lots to team building throughout the year to build relationships and trust between staff. This assists with everyone getting on-board, usually😉 #leadupchat
A2: If our classrooms are built on the foundations of a solid family - safety, togetherness, compassion, hard work, forgiveness & love - students will assume joint new challenges with excitement as an opportunity to pursue and grow together. #LeadUpChat
Totally agree with everyone who has said 100% “buyin” is not realistic. Keep “watering the flowers” and build trust with those who waver and lag. #leadupchat
A2. When people aren’t heard the initiative becomes a compliance measure, something to check off. When input is accepted folks use the initiative as a tool to help inform or improve their practice. #leadupchat
A3 We are charged to establish the collaborative purpose of the initiative. We have to ask what are our goals? How do we know we are moving in the right direction? How do we make necessary changes on the way to the goal? These help keep our team focused #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
We need to ask, listen AND hear. Then act on what we hear. Hard to support if we aren’t in tune to those in which we serve. Put systems of support in place as a result. #leadupchat
Amen. Strategy strategy strategy. With whom, how, when, and what then? Have to stay with it and keep looking for the leaks in the boat and how to patch them with compassion and skill. #leadupchat
A2: To lift and lead others in the long term, you must be a leader who continually earns influence with your actions. What you do is more important than what you say you are going to do. #leadupchat
Agreed. And sometimes we can't help it - and sometimes something new isn't really an initiative - it's part of something we are already doing. We have to help our people see and make those connections! #leadupchat
A school's established culture is key in how fast you can get a new idea going. If you already have a culture of "let's help kids," then new ideas get off the ground fast. #leadupchat
A3: Evidence and proof that it will work. I have tried new ideas and have had success with it. From there, others have tried it and have also been successful. I believe tired and true evidence it key to implementing a new idea in the school. #leadupchat

A3: We are a KS Redesign school. Have I mentioned communication today? It takes communication, common vocabulary, common resources, and amazing leaders-teacher leaders! We have those leaders in our schools. They are paddling the boat and I am in the boat! #leadupchat
This is so important. How many times have we said let’s do this and just expect it to occur after the first or second conversation. #ImGuilty of that. #leadupchat

A3) Good paddlers need to be told their doing a good job paddling.
It's insufficient for a leader to take the "they're supposed to be doing good" mentality.
Encouragement always greater performance.

A3 Co-construct action steps and classroom based evidence aligned with iniatives. Allow for multiple entry points to get on the boat so that new team members can grab a paddle! Provide different class rapids to continually challenge you're early adopters! #LeadUpChat
A3:Getting everyone paddling in the same direction will only happen if you understand that we will never all be in the same place at the same time. We need to meet people where they are and provide support to keep them moving forward #leadupchat
A2: leadership core: self-awareness, which includes awareness of one's power is key If not,we inadvertently abuse our power. humility, which includes listening & being open to learn from those who you lead;abundance, which includes creating opps for colleagues to grow #leadupchat
:) Most times, no. Sometimes we have to jump in with them and paddle along side. And there are some where we will be clanking paddles the whole time- sometimes WE need to jump out and find the ones we can at least help. #leadupchat
Agree, Steve. Leadership presence and engagement is essential during times of challenge. Demonstrates to team members that we are invested in meeting the needs of the challenge and will support our team along the way #leadupchat
I have found that most (not all) of the times people are “fighting against me” it was because they didn’t understand either where I was going or how I was trying to get there. With communication we still may not agree, but we can usually get out of each other’s way #LeadUpChat
Amen. Strategy strategy strategy. With whom, how, when, and what then? Have to stay with it and keep looking for the leaks in the boat and how to patch them with compassion and skill. #leadupchat
Such a good point-- it's easy to have a new initiative each year, but an idea can become a routine or a culture if it has a good 3-5 years to take root. #leadupchat
A1: Keep eveything 100% student-centered, focused on student results, and the issues will surface naturally. The power then is in the hard conversations and the courage to have them. #leadupchat
A1: Went back to respond. We must find the piece of gold that needs the polish. Make it real and "do-able". Stay in the compliance lane only as long as neccessary. Tie it to something of value if you have to!! #leadupchat
That would be fabulous sometimes, I think.
But I just listen and try to understand. And sometimes we have to tie them into the raft and take the paddle away or cut them loose. That 5% of folks who won't ever get on board can't be the reason we don't move forward. #leadupchat
In reply to
@tsschmidty, @matthew_arend, @CoriOrlando1
A4: I think all matters on how you talk and respond to challenges as the leader. Do you make people feel small if they mess up or do you celebrate it, reward it, and refocus the team? #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!

#leadupchat
A3: Anticipate the obstacles that might cause some to want to turn around. Acknowledge them and do what you can to remove them ahead of time. #LeadUpChat
It’s also important to encourage people to challenge the work with reflective questions to make sure our work is right and good. Slower movers can add richness in the long run. #leadupchat
A2- having a good temperature reading on your staff. Do they feel that they have done all they can do with what they have? Do they need a new spark? What is their desire to innovate. Start with small conversations and plant seeds! #leadupchat
A3. Make sure your team not only has a common understandingof the WHY, but also of the WHAT & HOW:
Why-reason for doing What-what’s the concept/construct. How-how will we get it done? All three matter. #leadupchat
A4. Taking the high road. Remaining POSITIVE and seeing the silver lining. Nothing kills initiative, learning or a WINNING culture like negative behavior! #leadupchat
A3: Start with compassion. Connect first. Influence the influencers. Address resistance. Communicate your values. Learn from other leaders. Go forward boldly. Prioritize & act. Create wins for others. Equip leaders. #leadupchat
A4:Celebrate the successes! This is both for teachers and students. We all know challenges will come so celebrate our successes so we are determined to work even harder when it comes to challenges. #leadupchat#CESLEAD
Good point. Oftentimes, getting to our destination involves bringing more people than can fit in one raft. Some go faster than others, but everyone on the trip NEEDS to want to go on the trip. If not, find another trip.
#leadupchat
A3:Getting everyone paddling in the same direction will only happen if you understand that we will never all be in the same place at the same time. We need to meet people where they are and provide support to keep them moving forward #leadupchat
A4: Remind people of their strengths and their potential. Be in the trenches with them so you can understand the struggles/celebrations firsthand. #leadupchat
A4: must have the mindset of we expect challenges and obstacles. Something will block our path. However that which is in our path now becomes our path. Keep moving and celebrate along the way. You never actually "reach" it and stop. You just keep goingv #leadupchat
A4-Connection! What are we doing to stay connected as human beings? Empathy, compassion, and kindness can promote enthusiasm! Also, how are we showing each other appreciation? Focusing on strengths and abilities of each team member. Find the gold and notice it! #leadupchat
A4: I remind them that failure is a pivotal step towards success; as a matter of fact, it makes that success so much sweeter! Fostering a positive, persistent environment where encouragement never ceases helps create students who overcome adversity! #leadupchat
A4: I think it's what you do *before* challenges arise.
Strong connections prior to trials.
Strong circles of safety and trust.
High and clear expectations.
Celebrating more than success, celebrating the learning that occurs in failure.
#leadupchat
A4: Intentionally fostered culture. A constant sense that the people in your building have your backs and you have theirs. “We’ll get through this TOGETHER.” Beers with peers helps a lot too. 😉🍺 #leadupchat
A4. It’s all about keeping your eye on the prize. Not everything is going to go as planned through the change process. It’s important to know that that’s ok. #leadupchat
A3: Use analogies to help tell your story. The story of the Australian Olympic rowing team that lost the gold medal race in 2004 when one player stopped rowing is a pretty compelling story. #leadupchat
Q3 is all about the teamwork in paddling together with new initiatives!
P.S. That's me rafting last summer (we flipped later in another rapid!)
#leadupchat
A4: Challenges are opportunities to grow. Sometimes that bump in the road is the best thing that can happen to a team. It makes you focus on what matters and innovative in your approach. Welcome obstacles! #leadupchat
A4: Just can't let those challenges define us. So even when maybe I'm not feeling positive, I make sure that the things I am saying ARE positive. Those around me see it and feel it - and then I do too! #leadupchat
A4: Listen, listen, listen, and add some humor to the conversation. Also, I find it absolutely imperative to celebrate success often! We need to remember where we started to see the growth, and many times that allows Ts the perspective to keep moving forward! #leadupchat
A4. Experience matters. I try to remind myself and the team of the obstacles we’ve already overcome and that this one is just another one for the books. Press on. Forward and focused. #leadupchat
Absolutely! One of the first books I read when I became an administrator was "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students!" I know it wasn't about chocolate...but I have found that to be true!
#LeadUpChat
A3: people paddle along when there is transparency & when they feel like they are included in the decision-making. It's impt to share info about the vision/idea, ask 4 feedback, apply what makes sense, make compromises, & then it's a team initiative, not just yours #leadupchat
A4: celebrate the small wins. Every little win adds to the bigger goal. A championship isn't won in game one but game after game. Take honest reflection, provide feedback, be willing to adjust, and stay positive. #coachtalk#leadupchat
A3 1) identify the gap 2) get buy in about WHY the initiative fills the gap 3) see the exemplar 4) coach like you are headed for the Super Bowl! #leadupchat
A4 sometimes its about taking a step back regrouping-be ready to make course corrections with the same end goal in mind & be sure to laugh a lot-cuz life is crazy at times #leadupchat
A4: @bethhill2829 nailed it, with conversations and dialogue around these challenges. Sharing our vulnerability and highlighting that we are in this together, you are not alone...safety matters here. #leadupchat
Totally agree- but those are often the loudest- we just need to remember that they aren’t the majority and work with those who we can move forward. It’s hard, I know. #leadupchat

A4: It helps if we treat obstacles like speed bumps instead of roadblocks. Also, it never hurts to have a dance or donut break, stop and chat about something awesome. We need to be good stewards of our minds and bodies to keep doing “the work” we love. #leadupchat
A4: Challenges WILL arise when trying out something new, so a school culture should include space to regularly share challenges. Also, leaders can listen, listen, listen. #leadupchat
A4: Listen to your staff, students, parents, and community; request their advice (more heads are better than one!); give positive feedback and praise; write thank you cards; check your progress and celebrate successes!
#LeadUpChat#edu5720
A4 Be honest, recognize the challenges, celebrate the successes and discuss and commit to moving forward. A big piece is understanding we are a team that is together. Most of all stay positive! #leadupchat
A2: I love this, and it is so true. There are interventions for each group too so it is important to meet people where they are in terms of readiness. #leadupchat
A2: in order to get folks excited, I count on knowing where they fall on the innovation bell curve. Are they quick to innovate or do they require some “coaxing”? Bring the innovators and early adopters along first, highlighting success and the others will follow. #leadupchat
A4-Connection! What are we doing to stay connected as human beings? Empathy, compassion, and kindness can promote enthusiasm! Also, how are we showing each other appreciation? Focusing on strengths and abilities of each team member. Find the gold and notice it! #leadupchat
A4: As hard as it may seem at times, we have to stay positive. Look for the good in every situation. Keep a positive line of communication open with colleagues and students. Everyone needs to be on the same page with an end focus in mind. #leadupchat
A4) No matter what, stay positive. Convey a "can do" attitude without downplaying the challenges. Admit they are there, & convey the message that WE CAN. Celebrate small steps of success. #leadupchat
A4 challenge your team to look for a discover thier why. Talk and share your why. Believe in your team and share and listen. Here is my why. Haven’t shared in a long time #LeadUpChat

A4. Sometimes a reminder of a quote like this one .. "never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world .. indeed it's the only thing that ever has ..." #leadupchat
Totally!! If we think we are communicating our vision/mission/WHY enough, we aren’t. Consistent communication. Walk the talk AND talk the walk. #leadupchat
A4: We’ve learned firsthand that a strong collaborative vision and culture focused foundation makes the obstacles doable. When they feel appreciated and is if they a voice, they’ll start seeing obstacles as opportunities. #LeadUpChat
A4 It’s about attitude. If you don’t see obstacles as opportunities to develop your skills your boat is going to sink. Throw in something fun to break through the rough spots. #leadupchat
A4) We is done in a variety of ways:
Cry with people.
Make fun of yourself.
Acknowledge failure and move on.
Food.
Reflecting on the micro-successes that proceed the challenge.
Focusing on the goal's worth.
Regular pats on the back.
#leadupchat
KNOWING things cannot go perfectly because we are imperfect - and be okay with that when we start. Celebrate the successes as we go and have a giggle about the places where we struggled or failed - then start again. #leadupchat
A4: Celebrate the successes. Expect the failures. Check in often. Encourage self-care. Practice self-care. Our staff appreciates the social time and needs it, so food, challenges, and days to celebrate! #leadupchat
A4: Lead with empathy. Figure out others’ POV and go from there. Lead from the middle- not the front. Include them in the journey from day 1. Keep tethering back to the purpose (that should be a shared one) Celebrate the small wins. #leadupchat
A4- Don’t ignore the struggle. Focus on the progress made. Remind them of how far we have come. Discuss the supports needed to continue the journey. Celebrate successes from today and review the map for tomorrow. #leadupchat
A4) This week I asked my entire staff to not chase #perfection because we have never defined it and it does not exist. Rather chase #GREATNESS!!!Greatness comes with obstacles and setbacks that we overcome that inspires our 🌍. #MuhammadAli#leadupchat#BlackHistoryMonth
A4: Challenges WILL come up, and that is the time to really double down on support: build capacity, cheerlead, listen. If you are feeling downtrodden reach to an outer ring for support. Keep smiling at the inner ring. #leadupchat

A1: teachers what to know their voices are heard. When times are tough, whip out the chips and salsa and talk. Then you can prioritize and problem solve. Being transparent about your advocacy for teaching and learning is huge! #leadupchat
A4: Be driven to bring it back to the spotlight. Reminders are not always tools to enable. When they know it is important, not just important to you, a shift is happening. #leadupchat
A4: celebrate the small victories and continue to cultivate the growth mindset. We must teach each other that perseverance and grit are necessary inside and outside of the school house. #leadupchat
Yes! Because sometimes when we are working toward this HUGE end goal, we struggle to see the small success toward that goal! It's so important to celebrate those as we go! #leadupchat

A4 Be in the challenge with them. Instructionally coach through the hard so they can feel empowered to persevere. Work alongside them. Co-plan a lesson. Be a listening ear. Push to have the hard conversations. Serve. Lead. #LeadUpChat
Yes ma’am. Listen, listen and listen. We don’t always need to have solutions. Sometimes through the listening the solutions show themselves. #ImGuilty of this from time to time as well. #leadupchat
Awesome!! And seek to understand why they fall where they fall. Be open to learning more about why they are where they are and determine their learning needs so that they can make progress...just like we do with students. #leadupchat
A5: My default in these circumstances is to look for the pieces that did go well and talk about how we can continue to use those going forward - even if the initiative can't carry on. #leadupchat

It is also important to incorporate those shorter runs into the plan. There needs to be small actionable steps along the way. Without small wins- that marathon looks impossible and you lose sight & people. #leadupchat
Q5: turn to my PLN and the few mentors and folks I can count on to talk me off the ledge. Having trusted colleagues and friends is critical. I always come back to my WHY and doing what is best irrespective of the consequences #leadupchat
It helps me to understand the "map." I want to know what's around the next turn. What's the ultimate goal for this idea. That gets me past the dead fish smell on the shore. #leadupchat
Yes-- it's easy to rush ahead and think we don't have time to slow down and listen, but the solutions so often present themselves when we give ourselves permission to do this! #leadupchat
A5: When it looks like things might not end well - transparency is best. No sense in pretending it's not going to happen. If you can see it, teachers can too. Time to develop a Plan B? Revisit the goal and rework the strategy to achieve it. #leadupchat
Q5: turn to my PLN and the few mentors and folks I can count on to talk me off the ledge. Having trusted colleagues and friends is critical. I always come back to my WHY and doing what is best irrespective of the consequences #leadupchat
A5: Teachers are human. Students are human. Transparency goes a long way in the classroom. If things look like they might not work out, talk frankly with students about those concerns. Then work together to reflect and discuss what we can do better next time! #leadupchat
A5: Here's a mindset:
"No future is certain. The future doesn't have concrete. Goals can change. Plans change. Targets change." >> The certainty is our purpose, passion, and vision. Stick to those!
#leadupchat
A5: Be honest! Talk about the problems and potential solutions to possibly change the outcome. Seek the help of your support system and learn from what doesn't end up as you expected. #LeadUpChat#EDU5720@JMcCarthyEdS
A5: I am a relentless optimist so I rarely think things are not going to go well in the end. Sometimes others do though and those are the ones I listen too. We have to be willing to sacrifice what we are for what we might become at any moment! #leadupchat
A5: Step back and refocus on the why. Change the mindset-it's not that it will end "bad", but it may end up different. This is why we pilot initiatives. This allows us to find what works, what doesn't and make it ours! #leadupchat
A5-Be open to feedback. There are many times I have taken things personal, but if we change our mindsets, feedback can be see as a positive. Learn and grow! #leadupchat
A4: Again, this falls to the pre-work that is done before encountering the challenges. Communicate and collaborate to determine how the team will respond when the challenges come...because they will come. #leadupchat
A5 first I reflect by myself and go through the pluses and minuses then go to my peeps and get some insights, supports, etc. then fail forward while celebrating the sparkles in the dirt #leadupchat

A5: difficult to do. Fall back on others to support you and remind you of why you wanted to do this in the first place. Take the time to make sure that everyone understands why and how it aligns with their own vision. #leadupchat
A5: Identify the pieces that can still “end well” and focus on those. It’s rare that an idea or initiative is a total loss. Maybe an all inclusive focus wasn’t where we needed to go anyway. #LeadUpChat
A5) I remain positive and lean on support from my colleagues or #PLN. I also reflect on what has happened to see if there is anything I could of done better. #leadupchat
A5 Sometimes uncertainty is F.E.A.R. False evidence appearing real. Don’t let that side track you. If it’s not fear, Fail forward. Reiterate. #leadupchat
A5 Trust is built when we can be vulnerable and share our truths. We need to be authentic with our teams when we are at an indecisive spot and discern how to move forward within the synergy of a trusted team. #LeadUpChat
A5: Focus on what lead to the uncertainty what can we improve for next. We have life jackets, we won't drown we just need to do better on the next run. #leadupchat
A5) Look for the small wins within the bigger picture. Pull people together to decide how to grow from what was learned. Decide if it was the whole initiative, or just pieces, that didn't go well. ADMIT when you are wrong. #leadupchat
A5: If you are not afraid of failure, but see it as a learning opportunity, and you have a culture of perseverance, this should be easy to navigate. #leadupchat
A5) This decision needs to be made many times along the way on a new journey:
If it's clear that the it's not what's best, "Project X" it and ditch it fast.
If it looks bad but the end goal is still worth it, push on and deal with it.
#leadupchat
A5: Vent, cry then brainstorm a solution. The needs to be done with the people that are in your common position or “higher up”. People in the raft need to see a calm, steady captain. #leadupchat
A5-Be open to feedback. There have been many times I have taken feedback personal, but if we change our mindsets, feedback can be seen as a positive. Learn and grow. Consult with those whom have more experience. #leadupchat
A5 Reflect on the situation. What went well? What needs to change? Also reaching out to people you trust who can help provide a different perspective. People who will push you thinking and support you through it #leadupchat
A5: If the result isn’t what you expected, learning & growth still happened. If the plan isn’t going to work, change the plan. It doesn’t make sense to keep heading down a deadend path just because you’re already there. And also, “either we win or we learn.” #leadupchat
A5. Sharing the mistakes I made during the 26 years I was an administrator helps others learn that time and time again I got up rather than gave up. #leadupchat
A5: Gratitude helps. What can we be thankful for up to this point, even though things aren’t going as well as we hoped? (Sample of gratitude from a first grader @CentralCabotpK4) #leadupchat
A5: This is SUCH a good opportunity for excellent leadership. Things don't ALWAYS turn out how we plan, and sometimes the things we are TOLD to do fail. How beautiful an opportunity to handle with grace and model growth and positive mindsets? #leadupchat
A5: as an assistant principal that looks like me talking things out with my principal. What is our capacity going forward? Reflect on what to do different next time. #leadupchat
I think another good strategy is to determine the “now and laters” with new initiatives. Don’t bite everything off at once. Determine the now. Celebrate the wins. Connect the wins to the laters and move forward. #leadupchat
I view so many in my PLN as mentors—I learn from so many, as everyone has experienced different situations, there is something to learn from everyone 👊🏻 #leadupchat
A5 Focus on what works, learn from what doesn't. Pick up the pieces and form a new plan. Success does not always come easy, some of the best laid plans have obstacles we need to overcome making the outcome a greater success. #leadupchat
A5: We need to provide confidence that our team can get there. If you model indifference or lack of confidence, others will follow you in that direction. But if you keep pushing forward, more will move with you #leadupchat
So glad you welcome feedback from everyone. Students and families are key stakeholders. Seems logical to at least ask what they think now and then. #leadupchat
A4: Listen to your staff, students, parents, and community; request their advice (more heads are better than one!); give positive feedback and praise; write thank you cards; check your progress and celebrate successes!

Due to an overwhelming positive response my new book Burned Out, Beaten Up, Fighting Back: A Call To Action For America’s Public Educators is available in paperback on Amazon today: https://t.co/BodQc4FTqt… and on Kindle Monday February 19. #call2action4ed#LeadUpChat
Model what we say to students - failures are part of the learning process. Focus on the lessons learned and what good can be taken from the experience. #leadupchat
A5: on to Plan B! We have to stop and pivot. Analyze and reflect on issues and either provide the missing pieces, reshape the big picture or scrap and start over. None are ideal, but moving on without staff is always a bad call! #leadupchat
A5: failure is ok. Reflect back on the process so the next time it doesn't happen or you catch so you can adjust. Jordan didn't hit every game winner but tried. I'd rather fail trying to do something to improve my school for the teachers&students than stay the same.
#leadupchat
Appreciate @tsschmidty helping to guide the raft this morning! Though not able to paddle alongside everyone today, Im looking forward to catching up! The learning looks spot on! #LeadUpChat
A5: We have to look at failure the same way we ask students to. Did you learn something valuable? Did you accidentally create a new path that is even better than the original? #leadupchat
A5: Talk to your tribe- get others POVs on how to handle. Be transparent the whole way and of course correction is needed- be honest as to why. Be ok to #failforward and make changes to help with end result. #leadupchat
We have to be careful with who sees this. The pity party/tantrum can't always happen at the exact minute we need it. Removing yourself - finding someone to trust is key. Then - stomp away and get the venting out! #leadupchat
A5) Uncertainty creates fear. Fear creates anxiety and if failure is the outcome it is painful.
With that being said, I look for the lesson I was suppose to learn that will grow my capacity to lead in the future. Today prepares us for tomorrow. #leadupchat#MuhammadAli
A4: As challenging as this may feel at times, it is SO IMPORTANT for each&every one of us, as #educators, to find ways to keep ourselves, our teams, & our classes moving forward. This begins w/in us. Are WE centered in our understanding & acceptance of ourselves?
1/?
#leadupchat
A4: and what about our teams/classes. Are they centered? How are we addressing the #SocialEmotionalLearning aspects from w/in right out to the communities we serve? Are we positive? Caring? In tune w/ each other? Do we have genuine collaboration & #growthmindset?
2/?
#leadupchat
A4: In order to adequately address how to move forward when we face challenges & obstacles, the components of #SocialEmotionalLearning must be in place to support us far before any crises develop.
#LeadUpChat
A5b: Encourage each other. Trust that people doing good work with thoughtful consideration will gain something from the process even if it wasn’t what was intended. Not all plans and initiatives end in a big win. And that’s okay. #leadupchat
A5: You own it. Sometimes, you just have to swallow the frog. Of course, you affirm the efforts of all those that have their all and reaffirm that, together, you have a plan to move forward. #leadupchat
Yes! And we need to remember that not everything we think is going to be awesome will actually turn out and work out awesomely! It's life, baby! #leadupchat
A6: Get your team and flip it back over. We give up too quick. No failure is permanent unless WE stop trying. Don't stop trying. The consequences are too great. Unless it is a crappy program or initiative and then you probably should walk and think :) #leadupchat
A6) If you've ever tried to turn a boat back over after it has flipped, you know it's hard work. It requires all your energy and focus, as well as a commitment from other people to help you continue to push forward.
#leadupchat
A5: Depends on why it is not going to end well. If it is because it was not a good idea in the first place, it’s a golden plunger moment. Admit that & fail fast to fail forward. If it is an idea worth fighting for...keep fighting. Storms eventually break & sun rises. #leadupchat
A6-Take a step back. Don't start something new immediately. Take time to reflect and care for yourself. Ask yourself "What will make a bigger impact?" Allow yourself to experience the pain and disappointment and really "feel" it. Find strength from the failure. #leadupchat
A6: Take a second, dust yourself off, REFLECT, and get back in the game. Not all our plans and projects end as we expected. So, what will we do better next time? How will we learn from that experience? #leadupchat#edchat
A6: Keep the life jacket on! Paddle to the boat and get back in. Take inventory of what needs to stay and let the rest go. If there is not enough to keep then know it wasn't meant to be. If there is enough-keep paddling! #leadupchat
A6: Be humble. Be willing to hear the negative feedback and use it as feedback for growth. Be willing to admit that it didn't go as planned and be gracious to those who worked with you. Then stand up, buck up, and move forward as a team. #leadupchat
A6: If you get to the capsize point, it's probably time for a new direction. Hopefully you have built a resilient culture that is vision focused enough not to let the last failure get in the way of the next attempt at success. #leadupchat
A6. WOW! Now you have me stumped. This would mean someone pulled the rug out from the initiative and this shouldn't happen as it should originate from goals/obj./long term planning #leadupchat
A6: Look to the survivors of the S.S. Minnow! Their “3-Hour Tour” was a disaster. Their life together was still joyful amongst the challenges. #leadupchat
A6: Learn!! Salvage the good. Toss out the bad. Iterate and move on. A good design process will produce some failure. If you spend the time building in agility and an exit strategy for something “big,” it was time well spent. #leadupchat
Yes, move on quickly when something fails-- it was probably meant to be so you could find a new, better, brilliant course of action. Kinda like every romantic breakup that every happened. #leadupchat
A6: Knowing ahead of time that some of the rapids will be too tough, and we will flip...but knowing that we have lifelines to keep us afloat, and help getting back into the boat. #leadupchat
A6: Be transparent- own any mistakes on our part. Involve those effected in the course correction AND listen. Then plan forward to move forward. #leadupchat
A6: The first you do and probably the most important is not to go the same direction using the same strategies or procedures. You have to adjust or the results will be the same. #leadupchat
A6: don't abandoned ship. This is a sure fire way to become a school that goes from fad to fad. Find what's working, adjust, and realign.
Everyone remembers 24-3 (Falcons vs Patriots).
#LeadUpChat
A6: Besides, struggle should bring your team together. If the initiative was collaboratively designed and implemented, then all should take responsibility and start over. #leadupchat
So true. We can't be thinking two things at the exact same moment. If our hearts are full of gratitude, there's no room for finger pointing. #leadupchat
.@M_Bostwick mentioned culture. We have to ensure that we have a solid and excellent culture - because when we do, our teams can embrace the failure and move forward with us. When we don't, there is blame and moving on in separate directions. #leadupchat
A6: Now that is the million dollar question! Different every time. I guess, you have to do whatever it takes, talk to your people, reflect, review, work it out and plan again!!
Btw, always run it by some strong and resistant folks 1st if you can. #leadupchat
A6: I think providing ongoing support and coaching can make all the difference. If this is made a priority to accompany any new initiative before, during, and even after your chances of success greatly increase. #leadupchat#FutureReadyCoach
Thanks everyone for being here for #LeadUpChat! Such a great and inspiring group of educators who bravely face the currents each and every day!
Have a great week!
A6: If the destination correct, you may have just chosen the wrong mode of transport. Never tell your team that you shouldn’t have gone there. Just focus on a new mode. #leadupchat
Great chat today. Thanks @tsschmidty for the great questions and to @Leadupnow for providing the venue! Looks forward to seeing you guys next week!
