Thanks #masterychat for a great chat tonight and @NowakRo for hosting. (I think! Went so fast!) Gotta head over to #sstlap before finishing the last part of the chat.

play of the week- convo with colleague who wants to play the next inservice w/Ts showcasing their great ideas. Personalized PD
Hey #sstlap! Louie from Lancaster, PA. Middle School Geography, US 1 and 2.
I'd say my play of the week was... the best HYperdoc I have ever used. Great critical thinking and visible thinking! Thanks @MrsMurat !!
Hi there! I'm Carly, 7-12 Social Studies teacher (Geo, US, Govt, APUSH) from WI. This week I created a Civil War card game... can't wait to play it! We were going to try it today but we had a snow day. #sstlap

Olathe, KS
7th grade geo and history
This week ss examined artifacts of native American life up close and hands on. Practiced inferences and corroboration. #sstlap
it tends to be a late arriving crowd -
oh and autocrat can be used to create flash cards which is the idea that helped with the trading cards idea tonight #sstlap
A1 so far This year my ss have used canva, spark page, slides, and Google my maps. This semester I want to use Google sites and I movie.
I allow ss to choose what they like, if it is collaborative, can't beat Google.
#sstlap
A1. Oooohhh... Yes. I've harped on this many times, but I've been providing a CYOA (Choose your own assessment) choice menu at the end of every chapter. Most Ss have shown great increased engagement since switching from trad assessing! (I have them all three years.) #sstlap
A1: I love having students draw. Even if students "aren't artistic" I remind them that I am not looking for the next Picasso or Monet, I want them to show me how they envision the content we are discussing. I've got some pretty awesome work to display as a result too! #sstlap
Creating video presentations- screen casts, green screen etc. Where we don't have to sit through all presentations for days and days. allows ss to have creative license #sstlap
Google sites works incredibly well for students to create their own sites, or just pages on a class site. Sites can be dynamic and huge, or they can be put together in a few minutes for a quick assessment. This is a go to of mine too. #sstlap
A1: Students love simulations and creative fictional historical characters or taking the perspective of someone who was really at an event or alive during a particular era. It's a great way to practice empathy and to dig into primary sources! #sstlap
A2: I love using political cartoons, often times students think they are funny. I like to talk about how the artist is trying to convey a message and then ask students to use their background knowledge/critical thinking skills to work and figure out what that message is #sstlap
yes @Flipgrid is amazing- i am a huge proponent of quick video responses to show what they know. quick and easy- also helps get them comfortable with presenting #sstlap
I'm getting ready to have students create websites for the Museum of American History (or at least that's what I had the prompt say) to guide visitors through the Roaring Twenties. I am super excited about this project! #sstlap
A2: Most recently students recreated the story of the Lorax in a format of their choice (powerpoint, book, poster) to include a twist of how the story might be different with a branch of govt involved. Ss were creative and applied econ and govt concepts to a story. #sstlap
A2 I show famous art pieces of periods we are studying or of people/events we study. Sometimes we talk about the art, sometimes we interact w them, like make memes #sstlap
A2: Just yesterday I had students draw Antebellum reformers as superhero action figures (an activity from #playlap, @jedikermit). I have also introduced Ss to a new unit by moving them from image to image, leaving comments and hashtags. Interactive and fun! #sstlap
It's been helpful for me to show them how art is more than a pretty picture to look at. There is meaning behind it and you can't always just read a line of text to figure it out! #sstlap
A2 part 2: Students also read some articles on @Newsela to get more information on how corporations influence the government and how the opposite is also true. #sstlap
A2 - I love using political cartoons, infographics, I have Ss create hand drawn maps. Something new I tried was having Ss create a #beliefboard about a federalist or Anti-Federalist using quotes, art, symbolism. #sstlap
A2 Love having students re-create historical photos. https://t.co/E9a2VbHz7E I have the parents come in and vote for the top three. Great back to school event. #sstlap
Love that idea! I did something similar with my Civil War unit. Students had to find a primary source quote and image and provide an analysis of it. It went well! All ages catch on to Sites quickly too. Maybe you can share it out when they're done! #sstlap
One thing that got me... Don't understand the night and day metaphor... Prob going to have a facepalm moment... Can anyone help a baby SS T out??? #sstlap
A2 We do a lot of primary source analysis through photos/art. I see I think I wonder, posers, connecting to previous learning. Thought bubbles. I use these strategies several times per week as warm ups. #sstlap
Sounds like a great project.
Do you have an audience to evaluate their sites? local museum, etc. that could provide some feedback to students, or find a way to present their work as an exhibit? #sstlap

I've been using a ton more simulations this year to pique my own engagement! I've seen a noticeable tick up in engagement. Ss are asking about them. They're asking about when we will do more! #sstlap
A3 This isn't as much of a struggle with 11th graders. They are so focused on graduating that they would copy the phone book, if I asked them too. I learn a lot from student reflection. https://t.co/AdNBEeLRIn#sstlap

A3 when ss are bored I need to do something different- that might be stretch break, a 5 minute let me figure something out, or shift from large group to small group. Need exit strategy #sstlap
A3 - if engagement isn’t there, I don’t hesitate to stop and reflect with the Ss on what could be changed or made better. I learn a lot from the Ss. #sstlap
For now since this is the first time doing this, I'll be the main audience. I'd love to in the future have like a mini-expo where students can walk around and take note of cool things they see. I just want to make sure my expectations are solid first. #sstlap
A2 Love having students re-create historical photos. https://t.co/E9a2VbHz7E I have the parents come in and vote for the top three. Great back to school event. #sstlap
A3: I try to think of ways I can connect lessons to them. Sometimes it will be sports like I talked about how one of the US's roles in WWI was similar to that of a closer in baseball. These connections usually help me keep the students focused. #sstlap
yes- the idea of feedback from ss is not just good for instruction- how to improve, but builds relationships by letting them know they are part of the process #sstlap
A4: I love RAFT assignments, I think they are great to promote writing and teach empathy in class. Per @LRobbTeacher's suggestion to me at #edcampnsv, I have also started a student blog where students can compose blog posts on certain subjects. #sstlap
A4: My students do journal entries sometimes. Sometimes required, sometimes not. They take on a personality and get to write from that perspective. (factory worker from industrialization, Civil War soldier, etc...) #sstlap
A4
All of our writing follows narrative, informative or argument frameworks. I would say most is fairly formal. A fun one is the letter about frontier life in a sod house. #sstlap
A4 Create recipe for a successful empire -
Create a plan for Reconstruction before they learn about Johnson's plan
Write what happens next ex- Glory- and storming the fort towards the end- #sstlap
A4 blogs kid blog ....I found thus tamplate in which ss have to express their writing in Twitter, instagram, doc, blog and email great way for them to practice #sstlap
A3: I try to think of ways I can connect lessons to them. Sometimes it will be sports like I talked about how one of the US's roles in WWI was similar to that of a closer in baseball. These connections usually help me keep the students focused. #sstlap
A5 Did a Indian Removal Act Simulation from either Sheg or Zinn -
Civil War Simulation where they produce the materials for war to understand why N wins (sorry spoiler) #sstlap
A5: Sometimes I lead students to think there is only one point of view so they are all like "Oh yeah! Definitely" and then all of the sudden I bring in another one and it totally shocks them and they see that sometimes the world is not completely black and white! #sstlap
A5 different topics lend themselves better but Indian removal, civil war, bleeding KS, John Brown, populism, all have lots of resources that illustrate multiple perspectives. #sstlap
A5 - reading like a historian has Structured Academic Controversies which are interesting. Students analyze primary sources showing both sides of an issue. Then they debate using evidence from the sources. #sstlap
A5: Primary sources focusing on narratives or voices that are often silenced or typically aren't the main focus. When students are given resources to develop their own understanding of history by engaging in research and looking at archives they receive neglected history #sstlap
I loved the Agree/Disagree - always waned ss to choose side, but then learned Undecided- catch is they can stay there for first round of responses then have to choose side and defend choice- took away safety of undecided #sstlap

I just share a few topics - hope that helps- i would start with a topic about school give them somethign they likely have opinion about and impacts them #sstlap
bummed I won't be at @EdCampMadWI
would show you my new obsession with forms, sheets, slides and autocrat..
#sstlap
Have to find a time to connect soon
