Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
A1) All of them. Planning when to brush, remembering to brush, setting a goal to avoid cavities , fighting the opposing thought of being too lazy to brush ,remembering where the toothpaste is , being self aware about hygiene . #laticchat
Hi Nancy! Thank you so much for asking. I truly love learning about the LATIC classroom. I am excited to be on this amazing journey and Adela has been incredible to work with. My mind is full of ideas.
A2) I think I'm really strong in planning and working towards a goal. I probably could work on holding on to info while considering other info. #LATICchat
Being Creative has always kept me moving forward. Interestingly enough, I can have a hard time creating mental images and projecting what I want. #LATICchat
A3) When reading a book, Ss can anticipate/predict what will happen next. They need to anticipate what the book is about when deciding what to read too! #LATICchat
I believe a good task statement can help keep learners engaged and looking at what is to come. The solution to a good problem may not exist, but if we keep a students mind spinning throughout the unit, they may arrive with some answers innately through the process. #LATICchat
I believe that rubrics allow students to understand the skills necessary in learning the content and utilizing and planning their day with their activity sheet to build the EF skills #laticchat
A4) In Social Studies the first NYS Inquiry is about the technological advances of Ancient Civilizations (Maya, Inca etc) My 1st ALU on this topic is to find a modern day version of the problems they solved to work on. #laticchat
A4) I am excited to have someone try my new butterfly garden ALU in the revised book out in the fall! #LATICchat Convince people in your area to design butterfly gardens to help the Bs thrive when their habitat is being lessened.
At Bronxville, @magistraflood is helping keep the love of Latin alive by having her Ss read ancient texts on architecture, then create a walking tour app about buildings in their neighborhood that have Roman roots! #LATICchat
My first ALU work hand in hand with our Narrative writing launch unit. Personal narrative writing with experiences in the cafeteria to make the necessary changes to create a more student-friendly, stress-free lunchtime experience. #laticchat
Roadways were the Inca also. We are So writing to the Clarkstown Highway Supervisor about pothole!!! Thanks. i'll let you know how he responds. #LATICchat
A4) The music industry continues to remain stagnate in the digital era. Industry execs fail to give the consumer options that benefit the artists. We are left with mediocrity because of this problem. Students are going to investigate the cause and propose solutions. #LATICchat
A5) Ss could consider cause-and-effect relationships at each stage of the butterfly life cycle ... and for each component needed in the butterfly garden. #LATICchat
A6) My goal of Music Appreciation is to create lifelong, active, and paying patrons of the arts. We look at the industry so students can see who their piracy actually hurts… #LATICchat
A6-2) the artists. While digital citizenship, business, and other topics arise, being a responsible music citizen is a top priority of mine. #LATICchat

I just feel like so many issues in our society are because of the "oops" factor of decision-makers not thinking through the unintended consequences of their actions. #LackOfExecutiveFunction#LATICchat
Yes! But "conventional" schooling doesn't provide Ss with a lot of problem-solving time. In #LATIC, not only are Ss thinking through a content problem, but solving problems of needing to learn, figuring out which resource to use and how to get help, scheduling, etc. #LATICChat
I believe the difficulty that students display both in and out of school is knowing and understanding how to problem solve. How to take a step back from a situation, look at it, think about different ways to solve the problem.
A7) Activating prior knowledge about literary devices…
Using a list of Literary Terms and Writing Devices, make a T-Chart to list terms you know and the terms that are more unfamiliar. A guiding question could be, “am I able to apply this term to my own writing right now.”
A8) The purpose of studying devices is to get students Analyzing lyrical content so they can “Apply former approaches to new situations.” A common weakness amongst my students is bringing other “academic” skills into the arts classroom. #LATICchat
A8) I could ask Ss to consider if any of their neighbors would be upset with their butterfly gardens. (multiple sides to a situation) ... e.g. where there are butterflies and flowers, there are bees ... what if I'm allergic? #LATICchat
Many students fail to see the value in their day, therefore, they simply annotate in English class and dismiss the skill beyond those walls. Suddenly we don’t know how to write full sentences or read analytically because I’m not sitting in English Room-A. #LATICchat
Ahhh yes ... so true ... when I taught math, my kids rocked the fractions unit and then complained how hard it was to convert cookie recipes in home arts class ... once I showed them it was just a fraction problem, they said "oh!" LOL #LATICchat
