#ONedchat Archive
The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.

hi Kendra here from Mississauga.
It's Wednesday and I'm very excited to learn more about learning.
A1) We must strip away the bureaucracy of education, get back to the personal. Common language is key to that
A1 Students and ALL teachers should have the same words for learning to keep consistent comforts.
Matthew, we welcome you to tonight's chat and are so glad that you were able to make it!
Hi! Carol from the water logged city of Virginia Beach, and proud to be. Love working for people who put .
A1: To change the culture, you need to change the common language about personalized learning
So glad you invited us to the - this is going to be a fun chat https://t.co/HXiNgqkgPU
Hey fam. Matthew, from Toronto, middle school T at the moment
A1 Need to be AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE that all have shared beliefs/values for education--establishing langua… https://t.co/JqRWj5GLUs
Q1 Why is it important to have a common language around personalized learning?
A1:personalized learning can have many different meanings to people & can be confused w/individual learning as well as other ideas
Right. If a student can't tell you what they're learning, how do we know they are fully understanding it. https://t.co/kAs9VW4QRr
A1 Students and ALL teachers should have the same words for learning to keep consistent comforts.
There are many ways to think about personalized learning…want to be sure we are speaking of the same thing…
A1 Students are partners in their learning and should be celebrating the same language of learning.
Awe, thank you for the warm welcome my friend, glad to be here 😊
A1. All professional learning requires a common language so our work to improve S learning can be collaborative and coherent.
A1: It clarifies what personalized learning means to the group and what is expected from it.
Of course! Need to get back into the Twitter swing of things. I've been lacking with a busy start of school
It brings the group together and makes it all special. https://t.co/07pLQGJ8A2
A1: It clarifies what personalized learning means to the group and what is expected from it.
Thanks for coming! I hope you enjoy. Always get gems of information from this chat!
A1 Common language clarifies and unifies people around shared goals
A1: Common language builds community & allows everyone to be on the same page/understand each other. Consitency helps Ss & adults.
A1: There are so many different views of personalized learning. It's hard not but there are too many. Kids need consistency
A1: Marzano talked about that more generally re: language of instruction. Shared language can =shared purpose and understanding
We ALL should know what each other is talking about! https://t.co/Gq1lL4ENjY
A1. All professional learning requires a common language so our work to improve S learning can be collaborative and coherent.
glad you're here with us tonight! Q1 is up and Q2 is 4 min's away :)
A1: need to be on same page about what it is so Ss learn & grow their skills. Many misconceptions out there.
Hi Mark! That's a great way to put it.
Yes, it is about the common language in the conversations about personalize learning. https://t.co/cxYMcIxVJw
A1: Common language builds community & allows everyone to be on the same page/understand each other. Consitency helps Ss & adults.
Hello - Wendy joining from Prince Edward County! A little late to the party!
Since I wouldn't think its synonymous with either, that furthers the need for a shared language and understanding
A1: common language is necessary so that there is clarity when talking, working, and learning together.
There must be alignment btwn goal & vision of a team to personalize learning successfully. Common lang is imperative.
A1: So no one left behind thinking they are doing PL and really doing hand turkeys. https://t.co/7QZOUC9Bmg
Q1 Why is it important to have a common language around personalized learning?
Love the image. That's awesome!
Yes, an under-utilized concept is Clarity! So very important! https://t.co/b5dw9bPtO3
A1: common language is necessary so that there is clarity when talking, working, and learning together.
A1: I think common language keeps Ss on the same page as well as clarifying expectations. Clear expectations = successful Ss.
HI Lisa. Welcome to . Nice to see you again this week
Yes, and the expertise is shared in the process.
A1 Challenge is that everyone's definition seems to be slightly different, have a better shot at putting our ideas into practice
A1: To ensure that expectations and comprehension are both clearly communicated.
A1: Common language means Ss can articulate their learning with the same vocabulary Ts use to describe the learning goals.
That is a true fact. System leadership, admin, a Ts need to build common language that supports our students
Clarity! A worth-while venture! https://t.co/t4emaYpqxw
A1: So no one left behind thinking they are doing PL and really doing hand turkeys. https://t.co/7QZOUC9Bmg
Q1 Why is it important to have a common language around personalized learning?
is now trending in Canada, ranking 21
A Marzano reader, huh? Love it!
So important...especially for learning goals and student outcome! https://t.co/X383JBPgp6
A1: Common language means Ss can articulate their learning with the same vocabulary Ts use to describe the learning goals.
So glad you jumped into the convos in - you're never too late - your voice matters https://t.co/16VBh6gwU0
Hello - Wendy joining from Prince Edward County! A little late to the party!
A1: need a common understanding so Ss can design their learning path effectively.
Hi David - so glad you are here in - It's been some time since I've seen you in https://t.co/7zAbFKrpkf
A1: Common language means Ss can articulate their learning with the same vocabulary Ts use to describe the learning goals.
...and teacher can be on the same page when sharing students... https://t.co/dUAv31t7gg
A1: need a common understanding so Ss can design their learning path effectively.
Welcome! We're chatting @ the importance of common language.. moving into Universal Design for Learning!
Q2 Why is Universal Design for Learning (UDL) the lens to understand how students learn best?
I know, I'm trying to balance "real life" talk with edu's (on twitter, how ironic) and an article by Marzano right now!
Thanks, Barbara. Hope all is well! https://t.co/9iN8ZNm9j6
Hi David - so glad you are here in - It's been some time since I've seen you in https://t.co/7zAbFKrpkf
A1: Common language means Ss can articulate their learning with the same vocabulary Ts use to describe the learning goals.
A1 When you have a common language, then you can work on building culture around
I would have to disagree that is it...so I will hold back my comments for a bit
A2 Flexibility! Being able to see the students as individuals and not only fitting into a specific group.
UDL helps support all learners and their needs. If we consider special needs it can help remove stigma associated with AT
A common language adds integrity to the teaching/learning process. Ss can't learn deeply if the goals are constantly redefined.
A2: UDL is the lens to understand how learners learn but also the lens for learners to understand how they learn best
Well, not disagree, but I think the theory needs to be extended https://t.co/Ga95q5MLOT
I would have to disagree that is it...so I will hold back my comments for a bit
A2: UDL is a way to reduce barriers and Kathleen wrote “…provides an understanding about the what, how, and why of learning”
A2: because it allows for the use of flexible learning environments to best meet the learning needs of all learners.
A2: UDL principles democratize learning environment and process by which all learners create meaning from academic experience.
A2 Students know themselves or begin to when UDL is involved. The freedom to be who they are is essential.
A1 common language sometimes can be simple and reflective in a Ss daily life, make it consistent and meaningful
A2: it is important to meet Ss where they are. , flexibility & fluidity :)
A2. UDL applies design thinking to optimize access for all Ss. This maximizes autonomy and promotes agency.
That is as much a part of the lessons as the WHY https://t.co/YsFJXlFso6
A2: I think about ’s idea of empathetic design here—knowing our learners and always asking “what does the learner need?"
A@: UDL is based in the neurosciences in how we learn! That is why we need to use it in every classroom!
That is so true! Start with and knowing our learners - what do they need? Wonderful! https://t.co/ZaqeZA9xE4
A2: I think about ’s idea of empathetic design here—knowing our learners and always asking “what does the learner need?"
Consistent becomes meaningful! https://t.co/jcu9Wnst2u
A1 common language sometimes can be simple and reflective in a Ss daily life, make it consistent and meaningful
A2 is a lens to examine our goals, assessments, methods, materials & environment within our instructional practice
Thx for the follows :) Nice to connect with fellow Canadian educators--"distant" neighbours! Loving reading the feed...
A2: We must speak their language otherwise learners and learning opportunities will be missed.
thanks Michelle great to be here
Thanks I find guides thinking and UDL maximizes learning to promote https://t.co/94HWxscBsk
A2. UDL applies design thinking to optimize access for all Ss. This maximizes autonomy and promotes agency.
A2: The UDL lens of Access, Engage and Express can be used by both teachers and learners: A Common Lens!
Yes! Totally agree, same page, common understanding
Pam, I believe in that the vision drives our push forward
Question 3 is coming up..
So true. Teaching is about connecting, about adding value to the human beings in front of us. https://t.co/qqyQe4VD1t
A2: We must speak their language otherwise learners and learning opportunities will be missed.
A2: UDL helps the learner understand themselves and what they need to learn.
. Universal Design for Learning based on neuroscience on how we learn, maximizes learning https://t.co/1w17j3TfQQ
A2 Never heard of UDL. Is this leaning to 'standardized'?? Is it ministry driven?
On their terms of success. https://t.co/JqHGtI9Xzd
A2: UDL helps the learner understand themselves and what they need to learn.
A2: UDL allows Ss to think about their learning, know that their strengths and valued, and empower Ts to create inspired learners.
A2: UDL allows Ss to think about their learning, know that their strengths are valued, and empower Ts to create inspired learners.
A3) It is essential for learners to tell their story because in many schools THEIR stories are not often validated
A3 - If we don't know their story, how can we meet their needs... the story is told by the std, parents, previous teachers
A3 Self-reflection encompasses the entire self. First, they must recognize their story. Then look within to try on how they learn.
A3: By sharing their story, it helps them to reflect on their work.
I work in inner-city Toronto, students don't look like main characters, historical figures, etc. Impoortant to include their voice
A3: So they can own it. Narrative is such a powerful tool and S often feel disengaged. Story helps make the connection
telling their story, thinking about their process, deepens their learning of the how and what so we can guide
A3 Lrners need to own their learning/own their story in order to know themselves as a person, as a lrner. Powerful.
Yes, use the UDL lens to understand who your learners are and how they learn! https://t.co/XUtlegEz6Z
A3 Self-reflection encompasses the entire self. First, they must recognize their story. Then look within to try on how they learn.
When they hear themselves telling the stories... they have that AH-HA moment. https://t.co/39gkq58I8d
A3: By sharing their story, it helps them to reflect on their work.
A3 : Crucial part of learning how to learn is to put words on how you learn.
I agree and that is so powerful.
And sometimes comparing who they are not and telling those stories are more powerful! https://t.co/kc7hL09ocN
I work in inner-city Toronto, students don't look like main characters, historical figures, etc. Impoortant to include their voice
A3: And God knows the textbooks aren't!
A3 Knowing how you learn, being metacognitive is a gift that last a lifetime supports assessment as learning
A3: Ss know their strengths & what skills they need to develop; let them advocate for themselves in order to be future ready.
. sts can translate characters into their settings; see how it plays out there and discuss
Once one knows how and why they learn, there is NO stopping their growth or potential! https://t.co/nLFmOLixZF
A3 Knowing how you learn, being metacognitive is a gift that last a lifetime supports assessment as learning
This is an often misguided yet important step. Students advocated for themselves creates exactly what we them to
Every learner needs to know how they learn so they can advocate for themselves. https://t.co/UWx2hFFfTT
A3: Ss know their strengths & what skills they need to develop; let them advocate for themselves in order to be future ready.
Can you elaborate? I want to be clear on your insight
Welcome so glad you jumped into the convos here at https://t.co/ACpWOGzMQT
. sts can translate characters into their settings; see how it plays out there and discuss
A3: make connections that are visible for teacher and other learners. To uncover and make overt what allows a S to be successful.
And sometimes it is the story that introduces them to their strengths! https://t.co/7PurFS4MP9
A3: Ss know their strengths & what skills they need to develop; let them advocate for themselves in order to be future ready.
Right. They can. But first to 8th grade and never seeing themselves depicted? Sad and wrong
A3: The ability to articulate their learning is an essential skill that will follow them through academic career and in life.
A3: no matter where you are, you have a diverse group of students. If they cant share their story, Ts can't understand them.
better late than never. glad to be here
