Q1: Remembering that all behavior happens for a reason, what are some reasons that Ss may appear reluctant to write? #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:34 PM EST
The topic was so good 2nite, I couldn't miss! #PatinsIcam
  • Nwboilermaker Jan 9 @ 8:35 PM EST

  • mwhammond1 Jan 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
1.#PatinsIcam Dysgraphia shame. Poor spelling skills

A1: Inability to spell, unable to sequence a story #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: a S reluctancy could stem from unidentified or identified apraxia, which is a motor disorder. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: Maybe inability to spell. Inability to spell does NOT equal inability to compose. ...different skills. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: Great ideas that cannot be expressed. Linguini vs pasta. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Jan 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
I am glad you mentioned the shame. So many of our writers are ashamed and embarrassed. We have TOO many solutions to let this happen! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @mwhammond1
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: Could be the writing utensil that is not comfortable or the sound it makes touching paper or keyboard clicks #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: I wonder if writers who are praised for their writing often are reluctant to write? #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Jan 9 @ 8:36 PM EST
    Absolutely different skills! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST

So very hard to put together a good story with only a few good words. #PatinsIcam
    • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: Maybe inability to spell. Inability to spell does NOT equal inability to compose. ...different skills. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST
Q2: What are your suggestions for making writing prompts more engaging to Ss? #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: by the time some kids get the message from brain to fingers, the class has moved on to other questons. #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST
Now that is one to make you pause and ponder... #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: arriving late:) Ss lack self confidence and growth mindset needed to let others see their writing. #patinsicam
  • Nwboilermaker Jan 9 @ 8:37 PM EST
A2: let the S develop their own prompts, gives them ownership engages them #patinsicam
  • BevSharritt Jan 9 @ 8:38 PM EST
A2: give them choices. Have them write prompts/topics of interest #PatinsIcam
  • mwhammond1 Jan 9 @ 8:38 PM EST

A2: I used to get my reluctant writers talking about something they were interested in first. #PatinsIcam
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Some Ss with OCD could struggle with perfection of writing and aligning...constant erasing, etc with leads to frustration...but not only frustration for themselves #PatinsIcam Impatience can lead to reluctant writers.
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
A2: Madlib approach, topics of interest. #PatinsIcam
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
A2: KNOW your students so you can choose topics that interest them. Get Success, and then have them practice a few others. Comedy helps in junior high! #patinsicam
  • RachelH872 Jan 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
A2: Include students in creating prompts, pull from real life. There are a ton of “cliff hangers” on line...don’t reinvent the wheel! #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:39 PM EST
True! I had a S who would become so obsessed with erased words showing through that the topic was lost. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @ksuding
  • PATINSSandi Jan 9 @ 8:40 PM EST
Exactly! #PatinsIcam Happens to me in tchats all the time! No time to process! #PatinsIca

A2: Bring them into writing prompts...use green screen technology for prompts...OR LET them decide what to write #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Jan 9 @ 8:40 PM EST
A2: predictable chart writing for AAC users, just because you don't use an alphabet or are pre-literate doesn't mean you can't write! #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:40 PM EST
ha.. YES! What about having reluctant writers Tweet as a 180 character mini-blog? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @PATINSSandi
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
Q3: How can the learning environment itself be designed to better engage writers? #PatinsIcam
  • Nwboilermaker Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
A3: allow S to use alternate methods to 'write' #patinsicam
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
Tech helps - errors disappear instead of lurk in the shadows. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @ksuding
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
I love this idea actually. Also, let them use comic strips #PatinsIcam
    • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:40 PM EST

      In reply to @PATINSSandi
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
There is a concept of "Error Friendly" not error free, but there must be ways Ss can correct mistakes or change their minds w/o it being a catastrophe ie. typing, word prediction. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:41 PM EST
Yes! ...what kinds of alternate methods? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @Nwboilermaker

    In reply to @jconradslp
  • mwhammond1 Jan 9 @ 8:42 PM EST

  • jconradslp Jan 9 @ 8:43 PM EST
A3: I need a well organized and distraction free desktop to do good writing. Took me a while to learn how to do that, Ts need to model and talk about it! #PatinsIcam
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:43 PM EST
A3: Flexible seating to the rescue! comfy chairs, quiet spaces, clipboards, paper, diff. utensils, computers, voice to text, etc... #patinsicam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:43 PM EST
A3: I found that having a 'visual' support (aquarium perhaps) for students to look up at when needed, actually helped sustain engagement in writing. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:43 PM EST
Soooo... basically YOUR classroom ;) #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @KaraGuiff
  • RachelH872 Jan 9 @ 8:43 PM EST

    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @Nwboilermaker
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:44 PM EST

That was so well played...I'm speechless. ha ha #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @KaraGuiff
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
Yup! Writers are welcome! Also allow music - their choice - earbuds ARE OK. Hate when adults think Ss aren't working if they have music on. #patinsicam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: Needed tools ready to go, so that time is spent on writing, not on setting up the tools. #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:45 PM EST
A3: flexible seating, slant boards, vertical writing surface, keyboarding, open timelines, limited timelines, green, yellow, red, page guides, beginning, middle, end guides, outline templates, pomodoro timed breaks.#PatinsIcam

    A4: Graphic organizers #PatinsIcam
  • mwhammond1 Jan 9 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4 4.#PatinsIcam Encourage reading, or read to students. Research shows a direct correlation between reading and writing leads to more writing and reading.
  • BevSharritt Jan 9 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: lots of reading of good writing, talking about why it is good, oral storytelling, creating graphic stories, or object story bags for tactile learners. #PatinsIcam
  • RachelH872 Jan 9 @ 8:46 PM EST
    THANK YOU! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @KaraGuiff, @danielgmcnulty
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: I have a 7th grader who struggles to write but can tell the most beautiful story in wordless comic strips he draws himself. He then narrates as someone else writes. AMAZING! #patinsicam
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4: Ts may have to step & think that if their Ss does not have the skill of organization, it may fall into their organization of writing skills as well. Take time to teach THAT #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 9 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4: Read good stories to them. If they have heard many it will help them to write their own. Never stop. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:47 PM EST
SO True! Reading and writing, reading and writing! #PatinsIcam

    In reply to @jconradslp
  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yes! I have students who need to write 1 sentence per Slide. Then can put it together as a paragraph - but can't see the whole without the parts. Again, Flexibility rules! #patinsicam
    • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:47 PM EST
A4: Ts may have to step & think that if their Ss does not have the skill of organization, it may fall into their organization of writing skills as well. Take time to teach THAT #PatinsIcam

  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:50 PM EST
Today in math we...shocking...WROTE! We answered a math journal prompt, asked a peer for suggestions (social skills), and Tweeted. Who knew writing in math brings learning! (sarcasm intended) #patinsicam
  • BevSharritt Jan 9 @ 8:50 PM EST
A5: Authoring clubs, reading work aloud to each other, using tools like Snap and Read to listen to your own work for sense and editing. #PatinsIcam

  • KaraGuiff Jan 9 @ 8:52 PM EST
A5: Connect Globally. I have Ss who don't care about ANY writing until someone across the world might see it. #Globalbellylaughday is Jan. 24th. Virtual Valentines Project is amazing as well. Find connections - somewhere! #patinsicam

    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @Nwboilermaker, @mwhammond1
  • ksuding Jan 9 @ 8:55 PM EST
A6: Often Ts may unknowingly be the barrier to our writers if they feel that writing is used with a pencil or pen. It's not...& it's not about us...it is about our Ss. Let them tell their story in a way they are engaged and able #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:55 PM EST

  • mwhammond1 Jan 9 @ 8:57 PM EST
A7 #PatinsIcam Of course it counts. Any way to get out the thoughts, right?

  • JulieHKuhn Jan 9 @ 8:59 PM EST
Speech to text requires that you know how to spell and correct spelling and grammar. It is intense and can be laborious. You and the computer develop a relationship. You can do any computer task by voice alone or a combo voice and keyboard. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 9 @ 8:59 PM EST
A8: my classroom full of non-readers and non-writers proving their 'labels' wrong! Word Prediction, high expectations, authentic audience! #PatinsIcam
