Welcome to #5thchat
Unfortunately, tonight's moderator had something unexpected come up and can't lead the chat, so we'll be changing the topic and format of the chat for this week!
I hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity to get your own questions answered!
Tonight's #5thchat will be an opportunity for folks to chat about whatever's on their mind.
No questions will be scheduled, so post a question that you have and be willing to reply to questions from others.
Although I'll be driving during the chat, I'll read the tweets tonight!
Looks like I'm it. One question that's really on my mind is: How do I help students learn flexibility and make compromises? I'm doing the same things this year and seem to not be getting even close to where I'd like to be with this. #5thchat

Hi all! I'm Madi from California, a senior in college and a summer educator for the past 6 years. How can we learn to monitor the over-usage of technology among kids and promote imagination and play? #5thchat

Hi Sarah! I haven't personally used gaming in my teaching, but I've heard of great success with the use of MinecraftEDU. What other gamification techniques have you heard of? #5thchat
Teaching over the summer, I get to work with students on their relaxed vacation time. Their vocabulary tends to reflect social media and the trends that are circulating, as most of their time is spent on social media vs. in school. #5thchat
I use DQWorld with my kids to teach them about screen time, internet safety, digital citizenship and cyber bullying. Google it if you’re interested! #5thchat
I haven’t but I’ve seen students avoid using new words in their writing when spelling counts. I’m pretty proud of my kiddos’ vocabulary and I think it’s because most of them really love to read!!! #5thchat
I use technology as a resource: I post prompts, links to articles, and such. However, all their writing is done in their #writersnotebook, so they still come back to pen-to-paper writing. #5thChat

I would strongly recommend reading “Explore Like a Pirate” and connecting with its author @mrmatera! I learned SO much about #gamification from his book! #5thchat
I teach that spelling is part of the writing process, so they can always fix it when they edit. It helps them use stronger vocabulary when they know it doesn’t matter right away. #5thChat
Do they write as if they were posting on social media? I've see a lot of it in recent years! y r.............take it from there! I capitalized the letters the 1st Time! lol...........#5thchat
My main way to teach flexibility is to model it, point out how it’s a good example of being flexible, then referring to it as an example when a student is struggling to be flexible. #5thchat
They do occasionally type their final copy or collaborate with peers via Google Classroom. Also, they can publish on our student blog, which teaches them a real-world use of tech. #5thChathttps://t.co/Dagso4qP9Y
I've noticed a bit more casual writing, as well as some terminology and references to memes and other internet trends that I don't recognize! Fascinating how they incorporate current media into schoolwork though! #5thchat
It was super funny because we were looking for synonyms of important to replace it (Friendship is important because...) — we had a great lesson on choosing a word that fits the meaning!! 😂😂 #5thChat#meaningful#serious#fatal#theysaidfatal
