  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1: STEM, as a buzzword, shows how important a multidisciplinary approach to education is. We have to stop teaching things in isolation in order to give our students the most realistic idea of what their future will look like. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1 STEM became a buzzword because as teachers we got tired of hearing "Math?! but this is SCIENCE class!" #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:06 PM EST
    Thanks, Howard! #scitlap

It combines multiple concepts together and ideally in real works contexts #Scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1) STEM, STEAM, maybe I've even seen STREAM... it's catchier than "let's engineer an answer to a problem" #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:07 PM EST
Hi Becky! Totally agree about the real world context. #scitlap
    In reply to @schnekser
  • HowardKiyuna Feb 6 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1: Important, yes! Why popular: The absence of hands-on/trades learning. Integrated activity makes sense to us. #scitlap

    In reply to @megan_hacholski, @ravenhlavenka
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1. STEM is a multidisplinary where activities and projects can cross several paths. We need to get our Ss to do active hands on learning where they can apply their skills and creativity. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:10 PM EST

I think @paulandersen said in his NGSS youtubes Scientists explain the universe, Engineers solve problems. We like to solve problems! #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:11 PM EST
What a great answer. And we can change our science classes into more of a STEM environment just by bridging that curricular gap and explicitly making connections for our students. #scitlap

Question 2 is coming up! #scitlap

    Here is Question 2! #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1 Well we all know acronyms rule the school, lol. But seriously, STEM is the future. When they say we are preparing kids for jobs that don’t exist yet - we are talking about creative problem solving of STEM. #SCITLAP
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:12 PM EST
Absolutely. I share those statistics with my students so that they have a real world application right at the beginning of the year! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: A STEM approach to science content can simply mean an inquiry-based approach, as opposed to "sit and get." It won't always be possible to incorporate tech, engineering or math, but we CAN alter the WAY in which we teach. #scitlap
  • ravenhlavenka Feb 6 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 STEM has taken over schools because it incorporates different subjects to a lesson instead of teaching individual subjects. This reflects life, multiple things will come your way all at one time, not individually! #scitlap #Sp19edfb4338
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
    RT Q2. #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2) I really love the "let's start with a problem" approach to challenges and projects. I could/should DEFINITELY do more of this, if I'm being totally honest. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
I'm taking a risk and pushing for single graded middle classes. Team teach yet full autonomy for pbl. STEM across all disciplines would be STEMLASS? #scitlap
  • ravenhlavenka Feb 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2 When I hear STEM I think of more hands on and interacting lessons! Lets get the students active not just passive! #scitlap #Sp19edfb4338
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2 I feel the difference is in the focus. With STEM we include teaching and focus on other topics other than just the science. Math is used purposefully, for instance, not just happenstance. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
It's scary! When I was still strictly science, it was tough to really let go and just give the students a set of materials and a challenge. But the learning that occurs in those situations.......WOAH. Amazing! #scitlap
    In reply to @SciTeach7Davis
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
    STEMLASS! Love it! #scitlap
    In reply to @HowardKiyuna
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
    Question 3 has arrived! #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1 I think it’s always been there, but now more purposeful. Realizing that science (and outdated scientific method) are not an island. There is not one path, not one answer. #SciTLAP
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
Yes! Active vs. passive is at the heart of what STEM means. #scitlap
    In reply to @ravenhlavenka
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1. In traditional science teaching, your not solving problems related to everyday life that allows for hands on learning. Recipe type science. STEM, were looking at multiple aspects of a problem, hands on learning, multidisplinary areas. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
Great point - explicit connections. #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • seanrussell311 Feb 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2. A true STEM approach (including the engineering component) allows a student to experience the content and it's applications in many different ways. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: I always have to mention @scratch. It was invaluable in my science classroom AND allowed me to bring in tech skills that the kids weren't getting anywhere else at the time. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
Did I just learn a new word? I think, yes! #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
Definitely. Might be a buzzword, but the fact that it's at the forefront of education is driving change, and that's a GREAT thing! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:19 PM EST
Excellent answer! Thanks for joining us, Sean. #scitlap

  • heliorochajr Feb 6 @ 9:19 PM EST
An integrated approach among subjects, with real world problems to be analysed and solved, is very different from traditional memorizing science related concepts #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Feb 6 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3: Scratch code animated models instead of vocab/flash cards to learn part of a cell or atoms. We're dong Sun, Moon, Earth with Cospaces/Merge Cubes. Rotation directions, based on a 120 sec yr how long is a month, # moon rotations... #scitlap

  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:21 PM EST
@megan_hacholski These questions are killing it! #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:21 PM EST
So glad you like it! I crammed a lot into tonight's chat, so the questions feel like they're flying by! #scitlap
    In reply to @daleyscience
  • ravenhlavenka Feb 6 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3 I hope to bring virtual labs into my classroom with tecnology! While observing, I have seen teachers have different videos and websites students look up and watch to then answer questions! #scitlap #Sp19edfb4338
  • seanrussell311 Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3. A couple years ago, I added some tech in the form of an augmented reality app that allowed my students to peek inside a beating heart. #scitlap
  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A1 STEM & STEAM important because we need to replace retiring Space Race engineers at rate of 3% a year and we are not on pace. STEM Is based on application and self-reliance. #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3) I haven't branched into coding in my classroom (yet) but I love using tech platforms such as padlet to share. Recently we had Ss record audio interviews, post on Classroom, then listen to and give feedback on each other's posts. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
How cool! I loved teaching anatomy, so this is right up my alley. #scitlap

Question!!! What is the best way from experience to ensure your students are staying on task while using technology? #scitlap #Sp19edfb4338
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
What a great statistic to show the importance of what we're doing. #scitlap

  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
    Question 4 is here! #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 I have students enter data into Gforms to collect lots of data from many periods. More sample size. Makes for great conversation about measurement, data, reliability, and precision. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
Love that! Sometimes Ss struggle with @Flipgrid because of the video aspect, so I love the idea of just audio for feedback. #scitlap
    In reply to @SciTeach7Davis, @Flipgrid
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 Building stuff! Catapults, balsa wood houses, models, etc! #SciTLAP
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3. There's educational videos, technology @Flipgrid , for Ss to use in classsroom for projects. #scitlap
  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2 I’ve been teaching science over 25 years. When I started it was all about inquiry but STEM added in “technology, design and application. NGSS added. Claim, evidence and reasoning which was old inquiry. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4: I'm not in the science classroom anymore, but I loved using the @FOSSscience kits during earth science last year to bring concepts to life. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
Very, very, very clear expectations and procedures! Make sure you circulate consistently so that they have no choice but to stay on task - because you're always watching! An engaging task will eliminate the majority of those issues. #scitlap
    In reply to @ravenhlavenka
  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
A2 also science when I grew up was memorization and recipe labs occasionally. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
SO excited for this when our new #SEGWarriorNation STEM Lab opens this coming August. 3D printers, laser cutter, CNC milling machine, power tools galore....it's going to be amazing! #scitlap

    RT Q4. #scitlap
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4. Ss had to design catapults that shot a pompom a certain distance relating to newton's forces of motion. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
So much fun! Definitely an activity that will stick with them, I'm sure. #scitlap
    In reply to @gdorn1
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
More of an E for engineering. I don’t know my letters apparently. In my defense, I was thinking of my school’s technology exploratory, which has a lot of design process and building. #scitlap
  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3 I like @EiE_org introduces technology in their units. Technology is man made things that solve a problem. Our SIMS, iPads and science instruments are technology. I like the project where kids redesign. Now with 3D printers, laser cutters and tinkecad options galore #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:28 PM EST
Not sure if this will play, but here's an interview of a parent who had a HS chem teacher who applied for the same program as Christa McAauliffe. #scitlap https://t.co/LrddIk3y0e
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:28 PM EST
Technically, tech is just applying scientific knowledge for practical purposes.....so I say this counts! #scitlap

80 lb paper air rockets: Energy, air Pressure, velocity. Attached Google Science Journal running on droid phone. Failed to lift very high but we got some readings. W/o the phone we get pretty high. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
    Here's Question 5! #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4) As a matter of fact, my 6th graders are designing a moon lander in class TOMORROW! #scitlap
  • seanrussell311 Feb 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4. While studying erosion, we launched an activity to use broken bricks from a torn down wall as riprap to reduce erosion of soil caused by water runoff near a sidewalk. #scitlap
  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
In our units kids design food bars for rescue workers and natural disasters victims. Simulator tests how levels and kids adjust, kids design portable incubators that use chemicals to create heat, pancake engineering is my personal favorite #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:30 PM EST
A4 the classic boat building to study buoyancy. Kids love it and I tie it into energy now too. I have plans for water bottle rockets this year too. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Feb 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
A5: One of my all-time favorite lessons was always osmosis using gummy bears. There was a LOT of graphing involved and determining percent change among variables! #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
Great advice from @megan_hacholski . Proximity control is best. Be very clear with expectations - I really like honest conversations, not talking at them...Technology is a privledge, even though our Ss May see it as a right. #scitlap
    In reply to @ravenhlavenka, @megan_hacholski

  • karlacalbear Feb 6 @ 9:32 PM EST
A5 I do a measurement lab using displacement to calculate volume and reach percentage of change to calculate decrease in mass & volume once apple partially eaten, Ss generate individualized research data and use math to analyze, #scitlap
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5. Aounf Thanksgiving, we tested cranberries by bouncing them to see which were good and bad. Out of the batch they had forming fractions, answering number questions, designed for experiment. #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:33 PM EST
A4) a NEW STEM challenge for us this year was related to our MS "one read" of A Long Walk to Water. 3 teachers challenged students to create a pipeline capable of delivering water from one tank to another #scitlap @LindaSuePark @WaterforSoSudan
  • daleyscience - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
A5 Graphing activities. Just today started graphing the longitude vs. depth of ocean floor spreading. #SciTLAP
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:35 PM EST
A5 I've decided you can never have enough graphing. Ss are (for the most part) not proficient at it. Simple graphs that show simple trends. #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:35 PM EST
The teacher was actually accepted to the program! And could you imagine watching LIVE in a classroom of students, knowing a teacher was on board? #scitlap
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:35 PM EST

A6: Money and resources always seem to be the first concern. How can I upgrade my teaching without materials?! #scitlap
  • SciTeach7Davis - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:38 PM EST
A6) How to evaluate and assess!!!!! We have a very "grade focused" population.... #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Feb 6 @ 9:38 PM EST
Also, they need to know the difference in graphing in math and science. We do it differently and use slightly different terminology. #scitlap

A6 When teaching more you really can't know it all. Talking with other subject area teachers is a great way to learn terminology and methods. #scitlap
  • gdorn1 Feb 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
A6. Amount of space needed for activities. Some may be a little messy. They may require a little more 1:1 working time depending on S. #scitlap
  • ravenhlavenka Feb 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
Q6 While student teaching, I realized the biggest thing that changed was having GREAT classroom control. This was the only class the student got to move around and be hands on! After the 1st go around, the instruction and expectations were better stated! #scitlap #Sp19edfb4338
