Question 1 ~ Think about yourself as a learner… what are YOUR most favorable conditions to learn?
Be sure to begin your response with “A1” and include #OCTMchat@TracyZager
When I am embedded in a near miss. Meaning I am close to figuring it out. I’m collecting authentic formative feedback and adjusting my strategy. Sarah Lewis calls this a near miss. It’s why most people golf. #octmchat
A1: Some time to think by myself then talk with others. I often then need some more alone time to process and play with the ideas we discussed. It's a process for sure! #octmchat
A1 - For me to learn, I need to be in an environment where I know my ideas will be received and discussed in a manner of positivity. Whether the ideas are right or wrong, I need to be met with facts and kindness, not lies and hostility. #OCTMchat
Question 2 ~ Think about yourself as a teacher… what are YOUR most favorable conditions to teach?
Be sure to begin your response with “A2” and include #OCTMchat@TracyZager
A2 - One where students are engaged, either in the content itself or as a “friend” where respect is mutual and they’re willing to entertain ideas even if the content isn’t their favorite. #OCTMchat
A2. An environment where grades are not a motivating factor for engagement. Collaboration and collegial critique push and challenge the classroom thinking forward. #OCTMchat
A2: when it's inquiry based and I'm able to take children on the journey of learning through questioning and learning of a topic. It being student centered and discovery #OCTMchat
A2 when I have absolutely no control over student thinking. None. I vowed to never show a young person how or what to think 6 years ago. It’s been amazing for them, but I’ve learned more than ever! And we are all happy! #octmchat

A2 When I’m comfortable! I do my best teaching with the kids and I both like the content. I love when kids are chattering about the content at hand. It shows they’re engaged and processing! #OCTMchat

Question 3 is coming soon… #OCTMchat
We just have 4 Questions tonight… we’ll be finished by 9:00 p.m. EST (unless you join the “afterchat” using “#OCTMchat”)
A2: In a building where we push each other outside of our comfort zones and constantly try new and creative ideas. Air conditioning would be a bonus! #octmchat
That was a big lesson I learned last year. It was so loud in my room, and I was just getting ready to shush them, when I stopped and realized they were all on task! #OCTMchat

A3 - Make PD targeted to specific subjects and courses, rather than painting broad strokes to make it one size fits all. English teachers and math teachers don’t need the same PD when it may not even work for geometry and algebra the same. #OCTMchat
A3 @FHSchools has done a wonderful job at this! Giving teachers choice for how, when, and why is huge! I was able to count the #SWOCTMlearns conference as a PD session in exchange for a June PD day. #OCTMchat
A3 treat our adult learners like our young people. Instead of telling or showing. Put them in situations where they have to figure out and be learners. We all need to push for more learning and build independence for adults. Me included. #octmchat
A3: Job-embedded PD is essential! Having a coach is a valuable way to provide this environment. I love learning alongside teachers and students! #octmchat
Question 4 (see photo below)
All students deserve the best space to learn and grow… all teachers deserve the best environment to teach…
#OCTMchat@TracyZager
A4 - Set clear high expectations. One thing I think keeps students going and wanting to learn is knowing someone believes in them. One way this can be done is ensuring students don’t settle and making sure we’re pushing them to their highest ability. #OCTMchat
A4: continue being intentional about my lessons and continuing to provide inquiry based lessons for students to explore and discover the mathematics. Also, share my math passion with others! #OCTMchat
Stop chasing answers. Focus only on process. Expand mathematics to more than computing. Engage young people in authentic meaningful ways. Play mathematically. All done by me carefully choosing situations. And finally. Love them! ALL!!!#octmchat
A4 I try to give students choice as often as possible. Not only are they more engaged, but when they aren’t we chat about the choice they made and how they could choose more wisely next time. I try to have multiple modalities available to learn the same skills. #OCTMchat
