For the month of August, we have discussed the 3 pillars of #EduGladiators & TODAY let's focus on #engagement

George, coming to you from Japan! I gladiate for students by giving them lots of time to actually read, write, and argue in class about important and topical issues. #EduGladiators
A1: Increased engagement comes with the investment of slowing down and meeting students where they are. Exchange undivided attention equally.
#EduGladiators
A1) Students learn best from one another. I’ve worked to promote more collaboration amongst students to teach one another or work together to solve big questions #EduGladiators
A1) I try to approach the lesson from a different perspective. I mentally place myself in their seats and ask myself would this lesson interest me?
You can also have a lesson before the lesson to get feedback from students. #edugladiators
A1: I am working to learn and use ways to allow students to have more voice in how they share information and show their level of understanding. #edugladiators
Good morning, Vic an AP from the Dallas Fort Worth area. I try to ensure that the vast majority of my actions directly impact Ss on a daily basis. #EduGladiators
A1) #EduGladiators the paradigm is shifting. School is not just about the traditional sense of learning and acknowledgment. The question is, how do we engage in critical thinking that allows our students to demonstrate learning that aligns with their talents and passions?
Years 1-2 were 75% lectures. Too passive. Years 3-13 have changed to flipped, mastery, pbl based with maybe 200 days worth of passive learning in that time frame. More active students learn more and have more fun and I get time to interact w/them. #notboring#EduGladiators
A1. Knowing your students, making sure that their learning is highly indvidualized and remembering that play and authenticity are fronnt and center on a daily basis. I've been thinking a lot about the concept of compacting, if they already know it why teach it again #edugladiators
A1: I use a lot of controversy and debate. Everything is an argument. Debate and discussion are one of the most engaging, enjoyable ways to get students interested and excited about topics. #EduGladiators
A1 Recently, as a Parent Ambassador, I’ve been going in to observe at the HS level. I see teachers teaching in a hands on relatable way that’s more interactive and collaborative. #EduGladiators
A1: Really Providing Ss with opportunities to share their voice and choice. I’ve found that when Ss have an opinion in their learning process they are not only engaged but feel empowered. Once Ss are empowered, there’s no stopping them! #EduGladiators
A1. My entire class is fully gamified! 400 years of American lit as a living, breathing video game of total immersion. From 1st day syllabus where kids load wagon trains through the final exam where students create their own insane asylums! #EduGladiatorshttps://t.co/NX0rmZedFY
A1 I partner and help educators understand they are at their best when they are thriving in their own wellbeing. We live out our strengths in a positive, productive way when we are thriving. Then, we can help students do the same. #EduGladiators
A1: I’m enjoying how our Texas evaluation system is focused on creating student-centered classrooms so a lot of coaching conversations I’m having is around how we can maximize and build student independence and learning. #EduGladiators
A1: My Ss worked collaboratively on many assignments. During independent work, Ss were working in groups of similar skill level on various tasks that allow them to help each other and not rely on me. Notice and wonder is a great tool to hook them in. #EduGladiators
A1. It's so important to be willing to have fun especially during those first few days of school. I became more comfortable hooking students by including pop culture references in my ice breakers and activities throughout the year. #edugladiators
Q1 I have sourced involvement from our community to engage Ss in their learning as well as connect Ss via video-conference with isolated schools in other parts of Australia. I believe the skills Ss learn here are important for the workforce & society #EduGladiators
In my role, I have shifted faculty meetings and PD from sit and get to learning experiences in hopes of evolving engagement in our classrooms! #EduGladiators#ownyourimpact
A1. Though I am not in the classroom as a teacher, I see that the increase use of frequent teacher given informal formative assessments have contributed to increased student engagement. #EduGladiators
A1: By spending more time speaking with students about their interests or surveying them to collect data...instead of thinking that I know what interests them. #EduGladiators

We talked about this in #satchat today- it was a great conversation. Tech used to decode info (knowledge acquisition) encode info (content creation) and ENGAGEMENT (reciprocal approaches) #edugladiators
A1 Impactful Ed Leaders focus on creating the conditions where adults and students thrive. You can't have a great place for kids if it's not a great place for adults. Adult engagement is a leading indicator of student engagement. #EduGladiators
A2) I begin by asking the students these questions?
1) Tell me one thing you would change in the world?
2) Why would you change it?
3) How would they begin to change it? #MahatmaGhandi
4) Did the change have the desired affect? How would you know?
#EduGladiators
A1: I made an important shift from focusing on content as static to understanding how it’s meaning comes from how each student experiences the content. #EduGladiators
A2: My favorite question includes a body vote. "Where do you stand?" Whatever the issue is, Ss move to the side of the room representing their defense, then provide it civilly in words.
#edugladiators
That’s amazing! How do you navigate the stigma around mental health issues and your Ss with the asylum piece? #EduGladiators I’m asking not to criticize, but because I am struggling to see it myself.

A1 We're increasing engagement by giving up control to Ss - they often choose learning targets & how they will show learning. We're teaching them to effectively self-assess. They love being in charge of their learning #edugladiators
A2 I would change the perception that leading indicators for school success such as hope, engagement, wellbeing, strengths development are "soft" measures. When in reality and data proves they are the leading indicators to any other measurable outcome. #EduGladiators
Another one. Given a subject (like Social Studies for example) - hand Ss a paper plate and some crayons, markers, etc. Ask students to “draw Social Studies” on their paper plate. Don’t give any other directions. Reaffirm no wrong answers. Then have them share. #pd4uandme
When my career is over… I don’t think I’ll remember our test scores or our curriculum maps. But I WILL remember some kids, and some teachers… and custodians, and nurses, ans secretaries, and paras, and counselors, and SROs, and CNP workers. It is the people that matter to me.
A2. I think the best questions are very personal, "Write a letter to me stating that you have earned an A for this class, explain to me what you did to get there and what were the things you did and learned over the course of the year?" #edugladiators
A2: “What do YOU think?”
“Why do YOU think that?”
Ultimately, the questions need to be open ended and worded so that Ss understand that you want to know what THEY are thinking. #EduGladiators
A2. Specific to a course - How do muscles work? To solve this Ss use a flipped video, POGIL, several muscle activity labs using @pascoscientific sensors (EKG for contract strength/recruitment, CO2 for byproducts). There are other modeling activities also. #EduGladiators
A2: After sharing the lesson topic for the day- “What should our learning target be? and How can you show you’ve reached that target?” #EduGladiators#ownyourimpact
A1: students MUST talk content to be engaged. This doesn’t mean giving answers. It means engaging with one another in the unknowing, in the exploration. #edugladiators
A2: (outside the box) As an instructional specialist, my relationships look diff throughout the year. After reading so many SEL articles this summer, I want to ask “How are you?” to everyone I come across and mean it. I’ll wait for the real answer. #EduGladiators
A2. Though not specific, a series of questions @ different levels (differentiated) where Ss get a choice. The questions are relevant to them using pop culture ie music, video games etc. as a part of the question. It must b interesting to them. #EduGladiators
A2: move away from a question to Ss choosing one of the 4 task choices 🔥🔥🔥 explain the sequence , demonstrate an alternative, how does this effect others, examine the cause/effect #EduGladiators
A2 I would make the mission of schools everywhere to be creating the conditions for students to live a life well lived. A life that includes: loving/caring relationships, healthy both physically/financially, community connection, and having a purpose they love. #EduGladiators
A2: I worked at a great #pbl school where we asked kids to reflect on 3 simple yet powerful questions... What? So What? Now What? #Gamechanger#EduGladiators
A2: “I’m not sure. What do you think?” This question puts the teacher on the same path as the students and real dialogue can begin when it is genuine. #EduGladiators
I’ll never forget when I wanted to buy a video game system and wasn’t sure whether Xbox or PS3 (this is when I was asking). I asked the Ss as experts. I was blown away about what they knew. Quadcore? They taught me that day. #edugladiators

A3) After reading “The Energy Bus” by @JonGordon11 Ive used this principles to always bring positive energy to the classroom that translates to the students #EduGladiators
A3 I describe student interest by identifying the unique strengths of students. When leading with a strengths lens then we can design instruction, projects, etc based on the way students uniquely think, feel, and behave #EduGladiators
A3. I'm always reading and then sharing my book suggestions with students and faculty. This year I want students to teach me things from playing Fortnite to dances to how we can better manage crowded hallways #edugladiators
A3) I will always have a strong desire to learn because I am a student at heart. I will often ask students are they willing to teach me something that I do not know?
#EduGladiators#BukyOjelabi
It serves as great professional learning for educators as well; I have learnt so much from working with educators via video-conferencing and running lessons online with them. Huge potential here, perhaps even on an international level #EduGladiators
All the education books I want to read or am reading are out for Ss to see. They inquire why and I tell them my interest in it. Since I have choice I try to build that in for them. #EduGladiators
A3: I model engagement through daily reflection out loud. Every single day, I ask a question to my PLN and I also provide an answer using #pln365. #EduGladiators
A3: I read and write in front of students and model my thinking process while demonstrating skills. It can get messy sometimes, but I make sure to be positive and remind everyone that it's normal! #EduGladiators
A3: I share with my students my own personal glows and grows and how I overcame struggles. I share how I try things out of my comfort zone as well as what I’ve learned from doing so. As Ts we have to model for our Ss what we expect or hope for them- #EduGladiators
A3: Recogize my own bias. I have always worked in urban ed so I ask what I should be reading. Just finished “The Hate U Give” with my son who will be a Freshmanthis year. Helps me see different perspectives #EduGladiators
A3 Pay attention to when students are in "flow": they have a yearning to do more of something, learning is fast and rapid, they demonstrate satisfaction, you witness glimpses of excellence. Clues to talent. #EduGladiators
A3: A teacher that approaches any content with passion and excitement regardless of their personal feelings about it, sends a message of interest and engagement! #EduGladiators
A2. “They say that your favorite class is the one that you like the most. Your best class is the one where you learn the most. If we both do our jobs right, this class will be both.”
Start by asking students what has been their best and their favorites. And WHY. #edugladiators
A3: I read and write in front of students and model my thinking process while demonstrating skills. It can get messy sometimes, but I make sure to be positive and remind everyone that it's normal! #EduGladiators
A3: I let my Ss know I learned soemthing on Twitter, or have gone to a new training so we are learning how to do this together. When they realize I really don't know it all they are more willing to try something new as well. #edugladiators
A1: My teaching practice has evolved to incorporate arts integration, to offer choice, to create non-traditional writing tasks, and to include high-interest texts for students. #EduGladiators#edchat#KidsDeserveIt#engagement
#EduGladiators Students can sense your passion—for teaching and the other things you love. Share with them. They will want to reach and strive for the same experience.
A3 I share my struggles & successes as a learner & how some struggles have helped me improve. Ex: I'm extremely hearing impaired so I had to learn strong listening skills to make up for it. #edugladiators
100% agree. To not show students the messiness would be to rob them of half of the instruction in my opinion. They need to see me struggle and work through difficult cognitive tasks. It does feel like performance art sometimes though! #EduGladiators
A3: Real talk... get off your rusty dusty and walk the room. Give meaningful tasks and engage w/students in small groups. Publicly honor learners with The Championship Belt #EduGladiators
A4: I agree with @kruevans tweet about doing what you ask student to do. Write when they write, read when they read, think aloud, be transparent. Build empathy and understanding of their world, strengths and challenges.
#edugladiators
A3. I am my kids biggest fan. Constantly tweeting, podcasting, and blogging right there with them to amplify the awesome. Every Friday we send out a class newsletter loaded with photos, .gifs, and video of the cool stuff we’re doing in class. RELATIONSHIPS! #EduGladiators
A4. When teachers model their thinking out loud Ss are able to “see” and “here” what learning looks like and sounds like. Ss come to understand that it’s messy and know that that’s ok. #EduGladiators
Q4 Late to the chat but wanted to share this visual that can help all students become more active, engaged readers when reading picture books or poems or novels (& when discussing art) helps them find the key evidence that encourages comprehension & meaning-making #EduGladiators
A3. My attitude is that I can learn something from anyone! Ss, teachers, secretaries, bus drivers etc. I feel that we learn from people through sharing of experiences. All people are important & have value. Ss should have the opp to teach. #EduGladiators
100% this. If you haven't done a through task analysis of a task before assigning it, and tried to do it yourself, how are you going to small chunk it for students? #EduGladiators
A2: Questions I ask: What does society owe to the individual? What does the individual owe to society? What issue in society do you think is the most pressing? How would you change/fix that issue? Who are you? How do you want to be perceived? #EduGladiators#inquiry#edchat
Also annotating and sticky notes while reading. Perhaps stopping every page to write 3 "Aha" comments isn't the best way. Ruins reading! #EduGladiators
A4: No matter what grade level we teach, where we teach, or what subjects we teach- we all want the best for ours Ss. We not only what them to be engaged but to be empowered. #EduGladiators
This shows us that we CAN teach skills like argumentative writing without groans and complaints if we allow students to choose topics that interest them. Guarantee they'd be able to cite evidence - and even find evidence on their own -if they care about the topic. #edugladiators

A4: We need to be courageous in the classroom and not shy away from debate and discourse as @kruevans says! Our kids are counting on us to model an informed exchange of ideas! #EduGladiators
A3: I get down on the floor (even at my age 😊) and play with my kids in the classroom...they love it, I love it and we have great conversations! #EduGladiators

A3: I believe it is important to share with students our love of learning. I talk to them about going back to school three times after I started teaching and how I love reading because I love encountering new ideas and stories. #EduGladiators#edchat#lifelonglearning
#edugladiators let’s keep the party going this Tuesday night for the #BackToSchoolPremiere at #PLN365. I hope to see you there. Make sure you have your 🍿 popcorn (answers) 🍿 ready 😁😁😁
Same thing for me with Lucy Calkins. Love the workshop model, but some things were just so poorly worded or weirdly thought out that I just had to scrap them. #EduGladiators

A4: Be ‘real’ with your kids, show an interest in who they are, offer them provocations and watch how they ‘fly’...they will amaze you as they pursue their passions and curiosities! #EduGladiators
Actually, I found the strategies excellent, but my brain hadn't done that kind of creative work in a while. I would do them with my Ss, but trying them out makes me understand how some of them struggle & allows me to be more empathetic & helpful. #EduGladiators

To clarify: When I try an assignement & find it difficult, it helps me understand my struggling Ss. @JSerravallo said, "it's also so valuable to feel a little productive struggle. It'll help you empathize & know how to support kids!" #EduGladiators
