Join us on Mon Oct 29(tonight!) as @stony12270 moderates #NVedchat on Hacking School Libraries! #HackYourLibrary
Definitely don't want to miss this one. Everyone welcome!
I'm Stony, a teacher librarian at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I'm grateful to be your guest moderator for #NVedchat tonight as we look at ways to #HackYourLibrary!
I just read Through The Eyes of a Champion- the Brandon Burlsworth Story for our Sept book club. Starting Wax by Gina Damico for the October-November club! #NVedchat#HackYourLibrary
hi #nvedchat. I'm Sara, a K teacher in Lake Tahoe, NV. My school is currently adding on and just today we were talking about a library renovation/rethinking. This chat has perfect timing!
I loved the ya novels To All The Boys, The Thing about Jelllyfish, The Land of Forgotten Girls and An Abundance of Katherines recently. I'm reading David Sedaris now. #nvedchat
A1-Change of venue. Students + Teachers need it to help with creativity and just something different.
You have to be able to think and more in multiple environments especially in the "real world".
By the way...I love libraries!!! @hendersonlibs#NVedchat
R1: Anytime you can have collaboration helps enrich the quality of a lesson for Ss. When your MCS or Librarian can bring in outside resources, it makes everything better. #NVedchat
A1: Classroom collaboration is essential for learning, reducing the achievement gap, and increasing engagement. @KaganOnline is the perfect way to achieve this. #nvedchat
A2: Anyway possible- I show them databases, help them connect their Ss via Skype, assist them in immersive collaborations. I don't wait for them to come to us, we go to them! #NVedchat#HackYourLibrary
R1: the librarian or MCS can also see connections that the classroom teacher might not be able to see. Libraries also adding tech/makerspace tools further enhance the scope of a traditional library. #NVedchat
Welcome, Tyler! We just did a collaboration in the library with two math classes. They were learning about Slope. It was so fun! #NVedchat#HackYourLibrary
Agreed! Many of our middle school libraries are being transformed formed to #MakerSpace, #STEM area, and just down right awesome places for students and teachers! (like @LiedSTEMAcademy@derwood73) #NVedchat
In reply to
@LCHS_Bio, @LiedSTEMAcademy, @derwood73
A1: I think that class collaboration can be really fruitful for students and teachers alike. Students, in new environment, are more likely to be engaged. Teachers benefit from learning from and with each other and from seeing different student dynamics #NVedchat
Today our school faculty was addressed by local business owners. They said Ss need to be able to problem solve and work in teams. I was thinking about Maker projects in the library when they said this! #NVedchat#HackYourLibrary
R3: we just did our test run today with #GoogleEXPEDITIONS. #AR#VR for virtual field trips. Creating opportunities our Ss may not be able to do builds background knowledge for other content. #NVedchat
Collab with teachers via lesson plans, info about class management strategies/class structures. Libraries can collab with teachers by providing research strategies, spaces for different instruction, and technology resources
#NVedchat
A3: I partnered with UNLV library and my fellow AP English Teacher @RiosTeaches and we did a joint literary researchproject w/ our students. Ss loved working in the college library. #nvedchat
A2: Summer is my time to get caught up on professional reading. The Wild Card by @hopekingteach and @WadeKing7 , Lead with Culture by @JayBilly2, Innovator's Mindset @gcouros and Culturize by @casas_jimmy were my favorite titles this summer.
A3-We hosted our "Lunch and Learns" with local businesses and other teachers at the school. Using the library to bring everyone together was key. It was like neutral ground and everyone was open to ideas the students presented. #NVedchat#HackYourLibrary

A3: When I was in high school, we had a mathematics and history class content collaboration. Using statistics and historical facts, we analyzed the effects of the Black Plague on Eurasia! It was fascinating and fun #NVedchat
R4: a lot of time the MCS or Librarian is pulled multiple directions. Having time to work with Ts is difficult. Also getting time to get a class into the MC is also difficult due to space/popularity of the locale #NVedchat
A4: Time is always an issue. Everyone has a different work/life balance with different responsibilities. Twitter has really become a game changer with regards to collaboration. It has helped eliminiate teaching silos.
A4-From my experience it is control. Too often in education we work in silos or on islands.
We must work together just like in the "real world" at a company...multiple departments meet, collaborate, etc...
Libraries can be the space for Ts to work together for Ss! #NVedchat

Totally agree, need to move students around more, this is something I’m struggling with this year, as I’m still learning my new school @stony12270#Nvedchat
A5-Working with Libraries to reinvent the space. So schools, admin, teachers, and students see that there is value in having dedicated space that is full of possibilities. #NVedchat
Google came to our school last year and did an entire #AR experience for everyone. Huge thank you to @msosbornc for making that a reality. My only apprehension regarding the cardboard devices is I am reticent putting my phone in it and handing it to a student. #nvedchat
A4 I agree with @Snehalstocks that control is a big issue and with @NanaKathy22 that we all need more time. But I think school culture has a lot to do with it too. #nvedchat
A4: Tough teacher dynamics, conflicts in schedules, and different teaching styles could be possible barriers to successful and frequent teacher collaboration #NVedchat
A4: yes twitter has absolutely help teachers connect outside our walls and beyond our halls - Love #nvedchat and others such as #hsgovchat#sschat#edchat
Thank you @stony12270 for moderating #NVedchat on #HackYourLibrary! You ROCKED it!
Don't forget to follow the great tweeters from tonight and go visit a library this week...with or without students.
I completely agree. However, teams are only as strong as their training. Therefore, until an entire team embraces and is completely on board with PD, PLN, pedagogy, it makes collaboration not as powerful. #nvedchat

Thanks #NVedchat and @Snehalstocks for inviting me to moderate tonight. I always love discussing ways to #HackYourLibrary or classroom! Have a great week, friends!
Agreed. Too often investment in teachers is overlooked. I'm believe that we have to invest in our people aka educators at all levels. Then, collaboration will seem much more natural and not as scripted or forced as it can be.
We will get there... #NVedchat
A4 Love @Snehalstocks response here. I think barriers are either the physical space or the actual collaboration time to set up a good #PBL style lesson for multiple classes. It’s easier to invite teachers/students to view your work, sometimes that leads to more #Nvedchat
