Hi. Melanie here from the Waikato.
first time edchatter, long time stalker...Tash from Rakaia :)
Interviews this morning, got a great fella to do our next term with me. Coding this arvo. Sweet day
Anne from South coast of WA.
Four main blocks - 3 devoted to Maths/Reading/Writing an hour each
Beautiful part of the country! Jump in, it's an awesome PLN< shame about the facilitator! LOL
Yep sipping up a cocktail, loving the sun away!
Jen from Wollongong. Stage 2 teacher. Here while I settle the kidlets to sleep
Hi all! Fiona from Canberra.
A1 Block 1 850-950, Block 2 10-11, Block 3 1130-1, Block 4 150-3
SO jealous! Much deserved.
A1 T/T are always so structured as to not be pliable and adventurous
6 periods a day 55 mins tweet cycle
A1 9-10 Literacy 11.30 Maths 12.30 Integrated/Specialists lunch 2.30 Integrated/Specialist
A1 - do you mean we have 6 X 50 min lessons in the day with 1x 30 corporate lesson at the start of the day?
A1 Presume you’re looking for an answer more enlightening than “a big fat albatross around our neck!” lol 6 x 50 min periods.
We have a double period for seniors in the morning, 1 hour periods all other times, pretty conventional.
a1 as a primary school, each class timetable is different bar assembly and sport days.
I meant two week cycle!!!
A1: 4 80min periods with a break after each lesson . 2x 15 min recess, 1x 30min lunch
A1 Last school. area Yr 1-13. 3 pd days 8.45-10.25, 10.50-12.25, 1.05-2.45
That's so cool and responsive. A1
A1 9-11am Literacy Block - 11.30 - 12.30 Numeracy Block - lunch 1-3pm - everything else rolled across the week
A1 What timetable?! It's almost changing every fortnight to accommodate interruptions & changes!
A1 Last school I was at F/T had 5 periods per day 3x50min & 2x75 min subjects cascading over 2 wks
Our lunch is now 1.40-2.20pm !
A1 5 one hour blocks in a 5 day cycle with up to 16 options for junior classes as well as 4 core classes
A1: rigid timetable in ILP, struggling with inflexibility & loss of autonomy. New ILP, only 2 terms in.
Does that include break times? Or are those at set times in the day?
A1. As a primary teacher, I prefer a longer first block of 2 hours for literacy and then fairly even timed blocks 2 & 3.
we have introduced interruption free weeks - 5 a term to deal with it
Nice Tash, it seems timetables might be old school in schools trying new learning.
ours is much the same with the literacy - numeracy - everything else digitaledchat
Interesting we tried this but there always was a trip that had to go ahead!
Same, but we split writing and reading....
A1: 7 x 45 mins plus homeroom. Assembly on Friday. 1 hr lunch on Tuesday. Days sometimes change. Mon timetable on Tue
Very fixed into 'lines' of four lessons for all subjects plus Religion, Sport and Pastoral time https://t.co/QqIQI7ktZ7
It does work having only one period after lunch in terms of student focus.
I want a reasonable middle block to do maths & fitness. Afternoon block best if is longer than an hour too.
A1: Primary school so different from class to class, day to day...always chopping and changing to allow specialist lessons!
A1 Lunch is one hour and one 20 minute morning break - senior students start at 10 - 3,20, juniors 8.45 - 3.20, silo subjects
We've dropped down to only pastoral times a week, too little in my opinion.
the interruption free weeks are sacrosanct here and the Ts appreciate it
PS. Matt from Perth jumping in late after today's lightning carnival! Year 9s. Tiring...
An hour lunch wow! How do the students cope?
Welcome as always Matt, we've got your lightning now...thanks a lot!
We have one hour here - in the city it was twenty minutes!
our secondary teachers swear by the 1 hour after lunch - we have a different lunch to them
Too much unstructured time. Why should a lunch hour be 60 whole minutes!?!
6 Period day with Form every morning!
I love the two-week rotation. We had that at school. Worked for me!
I am not a fan of too many whole school or team activities timetabled in every week, cos then it limits our flexibility.
Starting reports here tonight on the coast. Our timetable fairly trad - 9 - 10:30, 11 - 12:30 & 1:30 till 3.
And I'm happy with a 5 minute toilet break lol
It's a real balance, I think lunch shoudl be 12 to 1 otherwise the Ss get too hungry & lose focus IMO.
all do heaps of lunchtime clubs, events, library talks, workshops, bands, chess, fitness, dance, drama culture
Great share Tony, that's the key, students must be kept busy!
our breaks are all 30 minutes except on early close days - 20 minutes
Same here, we have 30 mins for morning break, 40 for lunch, 15 mins would be sweet with me!
A2: I was surprised when I first came here because wasn't used to the break times but the kids can handle it.
for P Ss 1 hr is important - it may be the only outside time they get all day!
we go when we wish - so do teh kids - we are pretty flexible on that - lots of eating drinkin
We haven't had a 'normal' week yet this term!
A1: In Sec school, 4 lessons a day of 80 mins but best bit is Friday when staff have 2 hour PD time built into the timetable
They're pretty adaptable. In Hawaii due to heat, they finish around 2.00pm but start very early.
I'd prefer to have my students take breaks at whatever time suits them, do their work the same, but not practical currently
Great point Joanna, they do need the outside exposure!
our primary Ss break at 12.30pm and secondary at 1.30pm- i couldnt last that long!
A2: operational. The breaks after each lesson works well
A1 teachers mainly work straight thru breaks and mostly lunch too and usually after school, anad late and wekends and holiday
A2 Overcrowded - As an ex music teacher I highly value specialist programs but I want more time to teach!
balance! Some routine and some time for teachable moments!
You know I was being extremely sarcastic, right?
Hi Vipula and welcome! You have the best timetable in my opinion, love the long periods!
A1 Schools around these parts (Chandler, Arizona) go a two or three months then three weeks off & back again.
A2: works well I would say Enough time to engage Ss in meaningful tasks
It's hard Miss very hard, I now have lunch back at 1,00pm at the latest!
I don't have an issue with it - I would like longer lessons with my year 12's I'd rather 80 mins instead of 50mins
A2: It meets a need. We often talk about pieces of the pie to go around. I always suggest cutting the pie smaller!
A1 good point on outdoor time but we have surfing swimming mountain biking pe and river rafting courses, pakour, sports etc 2
we had 2 hours post lunch and Ts felt learning suffered, 4 hours B4 lunch and Ss seemed more focused
what are your times like?
A2 no 1 absolutely satisfied with any t/t esp. in HS - I hate having to stop when the bell goes esp. if Ss are in full flight
A2a My kids are out of K-12 & it’ll be three more years before grandkid starts up. It gets down to being able to schedule+
A2. Great timetable with some imbalances in the middle school!
A2: We as educators are adaptable by nature. We will make whatever we have work!
I think we def need a good chunk of time for each subject Vary tasks and really get engaged in learning exps
is now trending in New Zealand, ranking 1
nothing worse than engaged students being interrupted by the bell!
A2b I like the schedule. The staggered start-times (beginning at 7:20 a.m.) I don’t like so much. 9:00 a.m. would be better..
It's a killer particularly when they voice their displeasure at their next class and want to stay! A2
Question 2 the flexibility of integrating all KLA's gives timetabling a differentiated approach to learning.
I hear this a lot from secondary Ts here
A2 -not enough blocks of time for Ss to get in zone/flow. Lack of flexibility frustrating. Trade off is awesome specialists!
Works well that all subjects get equal air time. A bit inflexible but seems to work well as it is. https://t.co/4JF4oXnfB1
Come on! LOL. Student just need to adjust their learning and thinking to the bells!
a1 being a VET college for international students, my college's timetable is completely different from a normal school
A2 timetables: Limit curtail, sell us short, interrupt, siloize, break concentration, unnatural, circumscribe, atomize, flow?
Nice point Danielle, we've made all our junior classes and subjects the same lengths and no. of periods.
so true, we may complain but generally we do get on with it : )
A2. I will work with whatever timetable I'm given. But I don't like lunchtime's shorter than 50 minutes. For 2 reasons.
Often they want to stay for break time too, but get peer pressured to leave..
I'd love to teach starting at 8.00pm, get ahead!
I'd love to teach starting at 8.00pm, get ahead!
our day 7:11-2 for middle school. Really due to shared buses with high school
we have four hour classes and students attend 4 a week. the same class runs multiple times so they have flexibility
A2 scarp all timetables move to inquiry, mentor groups, weekly checkups, one big project, groupbased, performance proj / term
Classic academic influence on the timetable!
Peer pressured by teachers?
agreed! I always felt as a specialist than my subject was thought to be less important
when would we get our twitter PL time???
Hampton Street School in Nelson do similar to this!
we have lunch at 1.15 which I thought was late until I realised they eat at 11am break
Toilet breaks are definitely contagious in Year 1 lol One goes, they all want to go...
Firstly some kids take ages to eat & get no playtime. Secondly I need some space to reboot. Also, for lunchtime activities.
A2 bring te whaariki and 16 areas of play into all classes, prim, to sec and base learning outdoors, project based integrated
A3: interesting Q that has me divided as I'd love the flexibility but also know we need the structure
A1: We have 6 x 50 minute periods, sport on Tuesday afternoon.
A3a Digital teaching & learning doable. Two of my kids attended K-12 online part of the time, coming together for common time
my professional opinion is that you need some kind of timetable to instil stability
I think we're on to something, timetables should be determined by teacher appetite!
A3 We could have a school with no timetable, might be havoc on duty rosters for primary... lots of potential I'd say
Already question 3! Hi Patricia here!
Brilliant, I can assure you not much different in HS!
My timetable 9-10.30 11.00-12.30 1.30-3.00. Traditional . I would like to change it. Short sessions- fruit breaks.
A3 Yes; it would work because Ss would perhaps then realise it is about them and not the teachers or qualification authority
Interestingly enough 50 mins is long enough with year 8-11
A2: I rather like my school’s timetable. Was use to 5 x 1 hour periods at my old school. Took time to adapt to shorter times
A3b Dunno how well no-timetable would work for traditional F2F program tho. There’d have to be standard start/end times..
I'm sure we *could* - but who would be responsible for teaching what? How to ensure all is covered?! https://t.co/G9xlHw5zQ6
A3 yes, as TT are known now. They cd be more flexbile w/o everything falling apart
Students less interested in learning. Aorere teachers tend to stay beyond the bell.
A3 Yes! it would be awesome - bring it on. positive disruption at its finest
A3: Yes and no. Need the structure to maintain some form of order. Not needed in other respects for learning.
A3 I'm torn - some students need structure & boundaries, others thrive with flexibility and autonomy
always so trick when you move schools and the lunch break changes
A2 Destroy all timetables (to be said in dalaklike monotone with appropriate plunger and hand movements) seriously TTs impede
When one considered the average 40 minute attention span of an adult this makes sense
A3: No! There has to be some structure. Some ss still need it. Scaffold.
A3 hmmm good Q not sure it's possible though - might be a bit like no road rules?
people cling to the past don't we?
Yes - time for lunch Laura? Cafeteria?
A3 Would be flexible. Could be collaborative?
we have 40 mins for lunch, bit of a rush at times Early start for us though - 7.30! Finish at 2.20
Schooling without formal walls and dates/times: another access point for those who cannot access formal education?
Would mean school would be responsive to students and not the other way around?
Are your Ss less settled with more change throughout the day, or is the stimulation a positive (or unnoticed)?
A3 ss could work in teams or indivdually on a project basis. high tech high is an example where they almost have no timetable
A3. You need a breaks timetable, otherwise teachers would get no breaks & there'd be no one on duty!
A3c Having a online always open environment for information/lesson retrieval & arranged F2F time for activities would be cool
Great post Steve and welcome!
our issue would be providing Ts with their DOTT - that needs to be scheduled for when specialist Ts come in
A2 where else but in prison or army are we ruled by bells, claxon or horns every 50 minutes, we gotta break free of TTs hold
definitely some form of timetable. Not sure how you'd manage 90 kids otherwise? Some structure without being 2 prescriptive.
A3: Yes. But it would take teachers thinking about students as 'ours' rather than 'mine'.
I would like a school with no timetable but is it really feasible
Hmm …what about the Ss that don’t?
8 classes wow and btw welcome! Are there any doubles or all 8 diff subjects?
Would it work if students directed and were responsible for their own learning? We;d be there to help as needed
By other students; we need 2 build a stronger culture of academic strive & learning
A3. Yes! Would take awesome teachers that are flexible and empathic educators!
it's interesting though because Ss begin their schooling with no structured TT in the early years & it works
I think so, particularly in the senior years?
A3d I’d have to see data to support it tho. Heuristic decision making isn’t working out so well lately.
But during class time, I favour a contract/independent learning format so individuals decide what they'll work on & when.
1. in my primary school we had no timetable, and a very progressive teacher who got us to work on a contract basis
then they can manage their time and their learning. Optional comes to mind
A3 Yes cause work, life and nature have different timetables, flows and patterns not artificial 50 minute slots, journeys too
A3 Yes! We are trialling next term with no timetable except for regular recess and lunch. Bye bye maths block!
Brilliant point. At Kindergarten, there's a loose timetable but students learn what for how long.
Good on you?How do you ensure curriculum coverage? A3#digitaledchat
A3: It would be awesome as a food teacher to have upper school students for a whole day. Could achieve much!
And how can we cater for both in the one place?! Must be a way..
sorry must go - see you next time enjoy the rest of the chat
A3 Caroline very late sorry 😕 School structure needs some TT but certainly could be less
I have a particular specialism in a particular area - timetable necessary so I get to share that with relevant classes?!
A3 we should go to kids circadian, teenagers late rising, cultural siesta and societal down times celebrate eating together
a3 practically speaking, no. Ss need supervision for play time and without a timetable that would fall solely to crt.
That's very cool. They'd be owners of their learning because they'd have to be! Nice post BTW
2. Each Stdnt wd sit w/ him at start of the week and negotiate their contract, then meet at the end of the week to discuss
Need it or don't know anything else. We can teach them how to cope/manage small steps at a time
yes - double English for writing lab
That's true. I worry about the Ss at our school that don't 'do' open plan learning or won't cope with
Nice idea David, this makes a lot of sense to me!
I think it is important to teach kids how to manage their time and prioritise.
Play learning for all ages! Bring it on!
A3 in NZ we can have any class, cohort, school region, society or cultural rearrangement of timetables -we are FREE to change
Great point Melanie and rigid timetables do anything but IMO.
Ha ha. Meeting with prin and two others to plan that tomorrow! Going to be an epic day. I'm SO EXCITED
A3b I'm trying to think how specialist subjects in PS would be accommodated
Great point Tony so why have so little schools be innovative in this respect? A3
In hubs/team teaching breaks could be staggered throughout day, as needed
I love the idea of a siesta
A3 in NZ we have nothing to lose but our watches, fobs and fitbits - we can change rearrange and reorder time to serve us all
we seem to be adding more scaffolds for Ss here even down to daily 5 rotations in literacy and Maths - but there are choices
Would love a blog post on this if you're keen, very exciting!
so the ones that can manage can fly solo. No structure for the ones who are self directed.
I like the way you think!
Nice point and true but why should there be more pressure as the Ss get older?
A3 Marzano talks about some schools that have flex time. Teachers are in their rooms and students go to the room they want
works well for hubs... not so well for single cell teachers and classes.
it would be great for seniors, more flexibility and independent learning
Quality task sheets with student driven criteria allowing for student driven mapping of achievement!
Oh, I'd like that. Time to do things that I don't have time for now!
A3 cause it serves the teachers well to get power & pay for reinforcing professional and pedagogical givens 2
A3: Only markings on my TT are specialist lessons - rest is labelled class inquiry. Flexibility is key!
Me too - but does that timetable have to be the same for the whole year for every year group?
A3: I often ask if we could have school that went from 7am - 7pm?! Ss came in when they needed to. Ts not there all day.
Agreed. I'm in that boat, but thinking ahead to future when I get the chance
I agree. I've seen big growth and management by my students over their double periods.
A3: well you could...but. From my perspective it's important to develop structure and Sone SS require it.
A3 Why not both? A timetable that students co-construct with their mentors/teachers that provides both ownership & boundaries
rlly instilld in me passion+joy for certain subjects. I enjoyed thse school days immensly. wasn't 'schoolish'
In NZ at Primary = students bring own lunch to school.
A3 we don't change cause we are scared to fail scared to be different scared to challenge orthodoxies - we like 8.45 - 3.20pm
Timetables are nice ... until they try to cram too much into your curriculum leaving not enough time to cover it all
Now that I've gone I reckon kids could do most of my lessons without me actually being there!
A4: Government regulations, staffing and rooming definitely are the key factors.
Interesting thought. Primary or secondary I wonder?
may have neglected some subjcts tho
not sure how you organise it otherwise?!
I think because most of our Ss grow up with the open plan, they don't know any other way.
A4 buses, specialist Ts, staffing, policy, curriculum requirements
A4: staffing allocations. Financial pressure. Student interest.. Sometimes
Sounds different to Finnish schools that force Ss outside @ lunch.. even in snow!
there are days that I'd appreciate a wee siesta. Isn't that staff meeting time? 😉😉
A3 we should teach, kids, adults, communities how where & when they are ready & willing to be taught any time at all anywhere

Hi All - sorry for my late arrival - my kids needed to be tucked in.
Hopefully we can connect with you guys somehow. On my to-do list Michael! What's your topic for next term?
I love how student once they've chosen their own work are deaf to the world!
As a foodie, my Hwk is go home and cook! Do as much or little as you like!
A3 seize teh time day and way to teach that suits your kids, community adults - whenever and wherever people want to learn
Yes thats what I was thinking
There are potential ways around that, without taking away T break times
Look at balance over a year rather than a week.Lots for a focused block of term/semester, not so much for another.
Great answer do we reduce the content and favour quality and quality of learning then?
Would be a great world! No hwk. Imagine all the battles with my kids, gone!
A4. The mandated time requirements are always put in first to ours and then there seems to be very litle left : (
We are doing Science halfway through this term and into next. Also trying passion projects
True-more than ever Ss are being exposed to flexible learning environments - I think this is good life prep!
Good point, never been a fan of HW, I tell my students read, think and be nice to Ps!
A4. Fitting everything in.
A4 tradition, milking time in the old days and times of summer harvest for holidays (seriously!!) hunger, concentration, all
yes, it felt like real work. It was creative work and I felt like an artist or a designer. https://t.co/lIFHNfK9fA
I love how student once they've chosen their own work are deaf to the world!
A4 curriculum demands, school-wide demands, team teaching demands, extra-curricular activities etc
yes - cold up here most of the school year!
We never want to leave anything out! A4
A4 Students' ability to focus at certain times and certain lengths, hunger, teacher desire for breaks
and I was using a variety of skills, without the sense of it being a chore like school often is https://t.co/lIFHNfK9fA
I love how student once they've chosen their own work are deaf to the world!
A4 Not sure, but is student alertness part of this? Fresh in the morning, tired in arvo etc. Plan your day strategically
Nice simile. I love to work one-on-one, a lot easier with longer periods!
A4 - I would love if it we could answer ‘learning’ but I suspect it is often tch needs, release periods, egos, management.
not sure this works with demands on senior curriculum study programs - certain assessments each term
So true, that's why our junior reports only report now on skills!
A4: The big 3 (Maths, Eng, Sci). Then hums. Once they are sorted, the rest battle it out! Pie only so big!
A4 community pressure, expectations of parents, needs to care for kids while parents atwork, pressure 4 our subjects to shine
A4 For us it seems to be content/time allocations Must be seen that you are doing 10hrs English 5 hrs maths etc
Our timetable doesn't consider the students - it's purely influenced by teacher wants/needs👎🏼
Working families
Traditional school times- always been 9-3. Are schools able to change?
Wow, that's politics in edu for you. Fascinating share Urbie!
I find dual instruction is the only way to fit everything in - PE and Maths obviously; English & Science, geography and CAPA
I think the older students get, the more the need for timetabled specialist lessons. Can't meet curriculum otherwise
hahaha....sounds good to me
I do love how Sci is in the big three, not so in all schools
Good evening ! Just popping in quickly to see what's happening. Great topic! If only there were more time on a Monday!!
No. School has staff to make lunches. No outside companies and no soft drinks
Nice Jo, no-one seems to work 40 hrs anymore! Schedules highly variable!
Nice Jo, no-one seems to work 40 hrs anymore! Schedules highly variable!
thus my point about 'our' Ss. Every little bit adds up! Overloaded much?!
true. In my context I don't get break times. All my breaks are taken up trouble shooting tech sigh :)
A4 Tradition, obsolescence, conformity, comfortably numb, thoughtlessness, lack of inquiry and lack of evidence, torpor, risk
Welcome as always, the team is on fire, amazing posts!
Welcome as always, the team is on fire, amazing posts!
Welcome as always, the team is on fire, amazing posts!
the 4 hr classes we have at my college allow for a gd diversity of activties - grp wk, 1 on 1, etc https://t.co/kLhdJWps4k
Nice simile. I love to work one-on-one, a lot easier with longer periods!
No worries, get stuck in!
Yep I try to develop that skill daily. We must lead, then show them how to shine as individuals https://t.co/GKG0SoTb4j
We should not be teaching content, we should be teaching skills of how to learn content!
Inquiry is the way to go! Teach Ss and content follows as a result
Wow. Sorry for going off on a tangent Stuart.
Sounds interesting. wonder if possible to tot avoid certain subject areas? Many questions would love to see
Four hours that's pretty awesome. Some schools in NZ have 40 min periods and 8 classes.
Tangents are what this chat is all about :D
Pretty scary thought, but mot schools would be the same!
Can I blow my own horn Jen? Had 80+ Ss all on some testing website notorious for crashing. I was a tech ninja today!
I know some high schools where seniors go in the afternoons and juniors go in the mornings https://t.co/DfgPt8S0QX
Working families
Traditional school times- always been 9-3. Are schools able to change?
hmm from what I've seen of the plan for external assessments it's not a drastic change
So true, the side-chats are the chats!
A4 senior curriculum requirements normally
I feel your pain - I started after recess apologising to the class 4 eating my recess as they came in
I think most do consider when children are most focused and how long they can stay focused.
I think so, and I can't wait to come over!
A4 Timetables are straitjacket to innovation, the corset of creativity and the triumph of orthodoxy over learning - burn them
this is true - heaven forbid you upset an individual teacher!
A5 I'd like to say a bathroom break, but that just doesn't happen. Face to face time for me.
If you come to Auckland, you're most welcome to come to Aorere, we'll feed you!
Wow! That's fantastic, well if you make it to South Taranaki...
A5 Too many to list (Reading, Writing, Math 4 days/week + smaller things in each)
What if we had the courage to start at 8- finish at 2 and learners went home to play.P learners freshest in am.
Are we talking Maths in the morning?! That's why I keep getting Fri 6/7 classes!!
Ha ha ha, ever the gentleman Stuart
Jo this is brilliant, time for learning in school and time for play and more learning!
I miss recess (makes more sense than morning tea - have yet to see children drink tea at this time)
how can anything be achieved in 40mins
Recess and lunch (we all need a break sometimes - although, it doesn’t always turn out that way).
A4b Methinks it gets down to $: staff, utilities & local conditions. My corner of Arizona’s a mix of high tech & agriculture
A4 As a BT I found T/Ting pretty hard initially... Lots of guidance from syndicate leader. In my (ltd) exp. T/T is T-driven
A5. Lunchtime. Never cut short a lunchtime. I've seen some senior leaders do so. Wasn't popular with kids or teachers. 😠😬😡
you kind of get decreasing returns of scale with the four hours tho... https://t.co/Ne2ESpyazx
Four hours that's pretty awesome. Some schools in NZ have 40 min periods and 8 classes.
Maybe a bathroom break for all https://t.co/XmtYoANmwe
A5 I'd like to say a bathroom break, but that just doesn't happen. Face to face time for me.
A4 students, women, people just want one thing for teachers to get out of their sunshine, get off the stage, and let learning
The school in q is a very "august" institution, transmission learning!
Yeah, usually. I like it that way too, but first block is way to short atm
A5 - Insist on starting every day with my Year 8 homeroom class - got to have “What’s on top?” and touch base first thing.
Ours is more about region and dept demands. Eg English must be in first 2 hrs of days for Jnr years
A5: Breaks to recharch my batteries
2 hours is sweet but I've love the student 4 times a week over 3.
A5 Not sure if they are official non-negotiables but definitely expected are reading, writing, maths, spelling, daily.
we certainly can in oz, school has non traditional school times
systems, staff needs, legislative requirements, &behaviour management unfortunately. the lowest influence is student need ime
A4 flourish free of the artificial constructs of forced marches, runs and gallops to the next damn assmenst in a never ending
Done, closer to the date, DM me & we'll sort out details, is our digital learning coordinator!
A5: Art time, so I can sit next to the kids and chat
A5a School crossing guards need to be available when kids are around.. that’s a biggie.
The question of the night! Over to you good Sir!
The question of the night! Over to you good Sir!
I thk the prob is that in many ways we become slaves to the timetable instead of using it as a learning opportunity in itself
the 'exit tweet' when they get it love it Makes me so proud then I'm ready to improve my skills https://t.co/UPTmlzF8YD
Both sides Kerri are beautiful parts of the country!
A5 sleep by 2am and rising at 7am - to always ask questions challenge and debate - students and teachers - socratic learning
A4 At least 2 'play' breaks for Ss and Ts
Cool idea, I have to have the students thinking over mere consumption!
A5: Never really thought about it? But I will! Homeroom is a must. Need time to start the day with our Ss.
A5: Never really thought about it? But I will! Homeroom is a must. Need time to start the day with our Ss.
A5 The usual - literacy, numeracy, inquiry & the important - fun, laughter, meaningful conversations
A5 greeting ALL my kids at the start of day, reflecting at the end. Independent/self managed time daily.
A5 - so much variety is out their are their real non-negotiables?
A5 worked well for socrates didnt it - sigh but truly challenge risk and engage all - from minds to hands to warp drives too
I've always liked this idea, even for seniors, I also liked HR at end of day!
as with everything, giving the students more of a say in things would be a positive, I think - making them stakeholders
But not necessarily English. Had one class after lunch best for them
Cant agree more https://t.co/aHRCX23lM9
A4 students, women, people just want one thing for teachers to get out of their sunshine, get off the stage, and let learning
A5 - I am an advocate for scripture 1st thing Monday if you have to do it -start the week with the mindset of goodwill
A5 Smilingminds, literacy block and numeracy block
Love it when I have both - if I had to choose only one, I’d go for first thing.
A5 I quite like a cup of tea ever few hours, a bite to eat in haste - a beer on fridays at staff club is good - the rest free
A5 Literacy, Numeracy - reflection time- filling mindset talking laughing choice
Yeah. Have been thinking more about that. Not as an extra though. Important to connect.
So it's just NZ and England, then? Hmmm
Literal exit tweet - time to tick the kiddies in - I'll read over the remaining later - thanks everyone😊😊
Good stuff, we love our Period 7 on a Friday!
A5 10am start is pretty good esp if you, teens and teachers are up late, coffee is non negotiable, holidays a god send, sleep
They believe the T is the older of knowledge and schools are about teaching over learning
Alright, I'm taking it back! No more morning tea for my students. We shall be calling it recess
A5: Non-negotiable is that Ss will make me a 'taster' plate! For Instagram and 'scientific/market research'.
I never took the roll as a tutor but knew everything about my students, a family that learnt together!
*gag* https://t.co/ae9XsztdtW
They believe the T is the older of knowledge and schools are about teaching over learning
love a bit of meditation! We use Buddhify!
A6: Learning that doesn't need to stop because the time for learning has stopped!
A6: 1st a sense of confusion, 2nd a sense of fear, 3rd adoption and life will go on
A5 and music- vital to development
A6: Anarchy or innovation heaven
A5 collegial support, shoulder to cry on, a chance to sigh, rigoros open reviews of pedagogy & teaching to help learn better
Great post, things will be a struggle at first but the right mindset... A6
A6 more bathroom opportunities!
I can never resist these chats tho - always get drawn in
A6.My Ss like the idea of knowing when they come to me and when they R in their own classroom so in that way it would be bad
A6: Students engaged in learning, remaining engaged in learning. I'd like to see more of that!
A6 This is the dream! https://t.co/uELJHsauG5
A6: Learning that doesn't need to stop because the time for learning has stopped!
A6 students = party time! Teachers beside themselves from the anarchy!
A5 a willingness if not an eagerness to change be flexible celebrate diversity learn learn as a teacher daily to learn better
There would arguably be more relaxed students?
A6. With no timetable I'd be worried that some teachers wouldn't allow themselves breaks during the day to recharge.

A6 More self directed learning for all! Well after the mental meltdown 😀
A6 potentially some very uncomfortable teachers
Gotta go folks! Tacos are ready! I'll catch you next week. Thanks for the chat!
LOL. I think you're right, would the teachers be ok eventually in your opinion or too much?
A6 Don’t forget parents..
A6. After a little confusion and problem solving, life & learning will continue & benefit significantly IMHO
Is this a good or bad thing in your opinion?
Rising from the ashes... (hopefully not literally)
A6b More local choice (or at least getting a conversation/dialogue going) would be a good thing.
A6. On the plus side you would feel constricted by having to do certain things at set times.
A5 the most important thing for me as a teacher is to learn in everylesson how to be better, learn more, teach better, always
But we need to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable (to quote someone)
I agree, we forget the timetables are artificial and temporary if we choose!
A6 Some teachers will be run ragged- no breaks- no relaxation- no toilet stops. After initial chaos will come calm and order
A6 - Sometime it is nice for the bell to go and the Ss to leave - we all have days like that : )
Sorry I missed this chat - GOT won the battle
This convo is making me realise how institutionalised I have become 😕
Would remove the pressure of the bell!
Q6 my students seem to need to know how their day is structured a habit I try to break all the time https://t.co/tqTwLnIUh8
A6 not sure, but the idea excites me.
true, would need some systems & healthy culture in the school to make sure this doesn't happen
A6c It’d make for a new set of challenges to overcome, improvise solutions to and ultimately adapt.
LOl mental meltdowns encourage independent thought & self-reflection so it's still all good ... i think :p
Not on twitter. GOT second behind us! LOL
A6 You might get students who can - gasp! - manage themselves (what a thought!) Can't learn until you try
They would probably be more relaxed though
Steph, you know GOT is not real eh?
If a bell rang in the school yard and nobody heard it did it really ring?!
I don't have breaks now due to daily expectations (sometimes self-imposed) during timetabled break time :(
Nice point Fiona, we need to realise just how conditioned our students can become!
A6 Freedom, liberty equality, fraternity - brave new world of learning - endless possibilities to make time and space our own
Some might say those are the days that end in 'y'
A6 - what would the other option be? Sounds like Rudolf Steiner
Great query, what if for a start there were no bells.
A6 to teach till its dom=ne, to learn when we want to discover the joy of slow learning & to sleep eat and drink when we wish
IMO the students would adjust very easily, the teachers on the other hand...
yes indeedy! Just got to be willing to 'jump'
That's awesome. S with bells have no real maturity taught to them
Our bells are not working this week. Would have been a great time to find out
Haha! Getting my philosophy on! brings out the best! https://t.co/ucZudOZawW
Gold - you win Twitter tonight with that one!
And when we jump together the distance doesn't seem so big IMO.
I like schools with dance music between classes. They change it each week and Ss dance to class.
I always feel bells create a sense of panic...
ours didn't work today either - this is weird...
you know nothing Jon snow...I mean Stuart Kelly!
A6 to roam our great parks, steep in our swift streams, brave our coasts & 2 live free, natured and better life long learning
That's pretty cool, softens the environment compared to bells. Ours go forever!
Agreed - and a sense that what you were doing wasn’t as important as what is coming up next.
You should change that to staff room :)
depends on the teacher :)
