Please join us for a weekly conversation about design thinking in K12 education. We will have a variety of moderators with a wide range and depth of design thinking experiences. Each week, we will connect the dots to the design thinking methodology and how it can and will play a bigger role in today’s K12 educational arena.
Welcome to #dtk12chat! Tonight’s chat is brought to you by @ElaBenUr and @KnowKMD and me! Our topic tonight is SUMMER! Instead of asking questions about design thinking tonight, we’re going to use DT to design an awesome summer.
Let’s start with some intros. What’s your name, your role, and when you get off for summer break! #dtk12chat

Laura! Hope your sendoff went OK and thank you for being with us tonight. Do you ask this because in San Diego it is ALWAYS summer? Or because you have no break in sight? #dtk12chat

#dtk12chat Erin you may need to convince me. So far not really feeling the DT in #EDL_55 it seems pretty unnecessarily existential and not very pragmatic.
The first few questions are lightning round.
Q1. Who’s a part of your summer? Name the people who are a part of your summer. #dtk12chat

Fair enough. All I ask is that you trust the process, and we'll see where we get. From experience, I can tell you you can get somewhere pretty good. #dtk12chat
So glad you shared this. I hope our focus on going for simple, concrete yet powerful questions—shared by DT and lots of other practices that help us make things better—will feel good. But we'd really love to hear! #dtk12chat

A1. My sister, mom, dad, kitty cats. My co-instructor for a grad course on design thinking and friend @sj_bartlett. My students in my grad course. #dtk12chat
A1: when not spending time participating in PD's, I will be with my travel club kids as we fundraise for our trip to Japan. Oh yeah and my husband too. #dtk12chat#EDL_655

A1: Well, first I'll catch up on some R&R with my DH Jonathan, then planning awesomeness for the upcoming school year with my work family @mr_serce and Neil-e-O, and Halil. #DTK12chat#EDL_655
Great to see the #dtk12chat feed rolling along. I am a 4th and 5th grade school teacher in Maine. According to our 3 and 4 yr old Ss we have 9 links in the chain so nine school days left.
Q2. What thoughts and feelings come to mind when you think about your summer? What might the other people you identified be thinking & feeling? #dtk12chat
Throughout tonight’s chat, if there’s something you’re unsure about, mark your hunches with a ? so you can investigate later
A1 My summer is made better by my two children. We will be up to all sorts of mischief. The third person will be whoever is serving us ice cream. #dtk12chat
New student teacher: traveling to see family in US, meeting up w/ our international teaching friends & looking forward to meeting new work fam in Shanghai #dtk12chat
A2: Definitely nervous about the final semester of my graduate program, but at the same time feeling so accomplished that we're almost to the finish line! #EDL_655#dtk12chat
A2: my hope is that I will be able to take a few days to rest this summer. My fear is that I won't have any days to rest this summer :0 #dtk12chat#EDL_655

A2: Excitement & anxiety...a bit of envy. My hubby I’m certain is feeling these things as well since he has to deal with me. My #EDL_655 cohort is probably feeling similar. Everyone else I’m thinking is just happy it’s summer. #DTK12chat

A2. I'm looking forward to rest & relaxation. Reading! Walking/hiking and feeling at peace. Slowing down. My peeps love when I'm on break because I have more time for them! #dtk12chat
Hopes: quality time with my family and my work. That it feels like a summer well-lived and well-loved. Fears: that it'll be overstuffed, overstretched—quantity vs. quality. #dtk12chat
I feel a great sense of happiness for my Ss as we reflect on the yr and share their growth w families. I do not look forward to it as an individual bc I love what I do. End of the year stress and rush does not help. #dtk12chat
Despite all I have on my plate, I'm feeling excited about the future! Summer will be a great time to clean out some cobwebs, and bring in some fresh ideas for the new year...like DT 😁 #DTK12chat#EDL_655
A2: hope is to revamp some teacher prof learning for our district. Fear is that I won’t have time since I work all summer... but I will get to see my daughter graduate boot camp! #dtk12chat
Oh fantastic! How great!! I'll be teaching a grad course later this summer on design thinking for educators, too. So exciting this topic is making its way into academia! #dtk12chat
A2 Continued....My family is probably worried about the same things—the girls are hoping for quality time with their parents...and sticks and sand and stuff. #dtk12chat
Q3. What matters most about your summer for it to be a great one? Think about yourself and others! Don’t worry if there are competing needs - that’s normal! #dtk12chat
Thanks to @JeisBlack for making this photo available freely on @unsplash 🎁 https://t.co/TcOQuQbaCb
A2: How I can teach people design thinking in ways that will help them truly learn it. The Design Thinking pedagogy problem that leads to things like this https://t.co/YgigHj1rbQ#dtk12chat
A2 When thinking of summer I feel calm, collected, and days full of opportunity with my family. Time by the lake would be good too. My sidekicks think of fun and adventure. #dtk12chat
Q3: The thing that matters most is being able to relax a tiny bit and still focus on #EDL_655 Hopefully get a chance to take the fur babies out for more fun too. They have feelings too. #dtk12chat
A3: being able to find efficient ways to accomplish my goals while also completing my obligations (school, work, family). And of course finding time to do nothing is super important for me to recharge. #dtk12chat#EDL_655

A3: Time to be present & enjoy the moments; actively working to not worry about what's next or what else I should be doing; but also making a tech schedule for myself + kids & actually sticking to it! #dtk12chat
A3: Completing the degree & healthy baby
My hubby has senioritous as bad as I do & we’re excited to meet our son. I think the combinations those things = a fantastic summer no matter what. Unique summer

#dtk12chat A3. Being able to reboot my body and mind. So exhausted from this year. Just want a little zen, sleep, and to think about my other passions in my life. Need to recenter.
A2 #dtk12chat Seems like I can't find questions, so I'm inferring: This summer looking forward to @projectwayfindr , purpose driven education, breaking in the new(ish) minivan with trips, and seeing family I've missed for over a decade. And playing soccer.
Sliding in late to #dtk12chat! A1+A2 BOTH of my kids are home through August, which is rare. Looking forward to one last "full house" summer before both are off to college. My 21 y.o. will likely be moving next spring to start her first job. All of the feelings here. All of them.
A3 What matters most is having time with my children, time to think in an unhurried way, time to relax with a few good books, and tasting some ice cream....always back to the ice cream. #dtk12chat
I like that! Sounds like a New Years Resolution, I've been so tied to school year calendar for so long I do think of June as end of the year way more than I do Dec. 31st #dtk12chat
I really want to get back to working out! Something had to give after clearing my admin credential and getting a master's all at the same time. Sadly, working out seemed like a luxury. #dtk12chat#EDL655

Love this. And perhaps what matters is using calendars not only to help us schedule things INTO our summers but also OUT of them, or at least spread things out? #dtk12chat
Q4. Did you notice similarities between challenges people shared? Craft a How Might We question that responds to some of the collective needs we identified. #dtk12chat

Used to put time blocked into my calendar to prevent others from adding to it. I had my guaranteed time. Can’t do that in a classroom but summertime...

#dtk12chat A4: How might we pace our summers—not too fast, not to slow—so they feel fulfilling without being overfull? And, how might we feel good about whatever happens?

Q5. What ideas do you have to answer our HMW Qs? Jump into each other’s threads and add some ideas! (Hint: Play with the who (like all of us!)/what/when/where/how of your ideas!) #dtk12chat
Why have I not been in on this chat earlier... sounds like important questions being posed...
I submit that #TacoTuesday be subsequently referred to as #TacoDay and take place every day of the week. Thusly we shall be ever closer to the goal of #100KTacos#dtk12chat

#dtk12chat, I'm seeing (1) prioritizing and balancing personal/professional, fast/slow; (2) connecting with and supporting each other and (3) creating memorable and meaningful moments—loving whatever happens.
#dtk12chat A4. HMW learn to prioritize, manage, and do with time that which is best for our soul and the well-being of others rather than what is presenting itself as important right now? If we learn that then maybe we can do it all year! #EDL_655
I'm still not sure what's going on, but I just opened twitter and linked to your page to watch for questions. Still not showing up in my tweetdeck or #dtk12chat feed...only in notifications.
Now just reply to other people’s threads and help give ‘em more ideas! Build on the ideas of others, suspend judgment, and encourage wild ideas! #dtk12chat

A4 #dtk12chat HMW be mindful of time in order to find purpose in all we do? (rather than kick ourselves for "wasting time"--a strange concept driven by a language system that embodies time as a rare commodity (see Lakoff and Johnson--Metaphors We Live By)).
What if we try reprioritizing for a day—even a few hours—and see what happens (or DOESN'T happen, that we feared would)? And if things go wrong, experiment with how to pick up those balls? #dtk12chat
A5: Last summer, I created a #flaneur challenge. It helped me make memories as I wandered about, rather aimlessly, each day....for a tiny bit. #dtk12chat
A5 take time to disconnect from social media, work when you have to but set a timer, when you are with the people that matter be in that moment #dtk12chat
Good golly, the header on this post is a migraine waiting to happen (what was I thinking??), but I did write about it here last year. It was fun. https://t.co/Sth8VoKFh8#dtk12chat
A5: one of my Ss made a “self-care cube” which was like a di but you rolled it and it said “text an old friend” or “watch a funny video” -and other things as options #dtk12chat

I have to say that description is SO much better than the name...the word creates an image of a flannel pants wearing person w/o much motivation EEK #dtk12chat
A6. Eves and weekends are non-negotiable unplugged family time—try it for the next week and learn what it takes to make it work. Do I have a buddy on this one to join me in HabitShare? #dtk12chat
A3 I like to leave the state (California) at least once, or go deep sea fishing with my father. If I can finish a few books that is icing on the cake! #dtk12chat#EDL_655
'm committing to the 1 second video app that @julieschell just recommended!! Love the idea of it only taking a second to tap into creativity then having a huge 365 day product to watch and remember the journey!!! #dtk12chat#ELD_655
I'm working on a bedtime habit too! Quality of life goes WAY up with enough sleep. Happy to partner up on that one if you're interested, no pressure! #dtk12chat

A6. I'm going to narrow everything I want/need to do this summer down to just three things, one for me, one for my work, and one for my health. #dtk12chat
I knew a teacher she would commit to 15 each evening. What she found is what she found. And then she was done. Twitter is too much of a rabbit hole. #DTK12chat
