The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
I am excited to see answers to this one. I try to be very proactive and eliminate times when I think there might be a problem. I am clearly not always successful. #bfc530
I think it has to be both. First is to set & hold to classrm behavior expectations from early in the year to set the tone, but a teacher & school will always need to be reactive to problems that will still arise. #bfc530
How is poor behavior addressed at your school? Is it proactive or reactive? What are some alternatives?

Our high school is a #restorativejustice school. We have an @UmojaCorp Peace Room where both proactive & reactive cases are taken care of. Teachers, the dean & security have been trained in restorative practices. SEL skills are taught explicitly to support student growth. #bfc530
Good morning! My school is pretty good at proactive on the whole, we have experienced admin and strong ops and T&L teams. In Room 1113 I can always tell when I’ve missed the boat - reactive is never as effective! #bfc530
I'm struggling with this year's group and their overall behavior. This is a loud group that is easily distracted. As 6th-graders, they know the expectations, but are missing the expected mark. I have changed our morning free time already and use it as my read aloud time. #bfc530
Proactively. Having good classroom routines so students know what to do and what's expected, and engaging activities that help keep students focused. #bfc530

As a district, we are working toward building a system of behavior support that focuses on teaching and reinforcing positive behaviors. #bfc530#acsmtss
One of the great things about teaching is that every year is new, some years that newness is more challenging than others. Good luck with your kids this year #bfc530
Yep! I agree. Transition times can be difficult for my Ss (i.e., from one activity to lunch time) so I have a visual schedule and we review it in the morning w/ everyone & at each transition for some who need extra support/reminders transition is coming. #BFC530
Good morning #bfc530! Our school practices restorative justice so Ss reflect on behavior & set goals for making changes. It's very effective - takes time but Ss improve.
Chris, I ❤️ your words! They inspire me every morning. It feels like “church”. You are a blessing to so many! Have a great day! You have already made mine!! #bfc530
I would say proactive measures include advisory and clear expectations (class by class basis). Reactive measures are mostly sanctions. Nothing is 100%. #bfc530
We're a PBIS school as well. We hand out Whale Tickets when students are following the school mantra. In first grade, I am constantly handing out tickets and stickers (any sort of quick positive reinforcement!!!) #bfc530
Yesterday one of the teachers I coach sent me the student agreed upon norms for his #SEL seminar class. The post-its are all the students’ thoughts with the poster in the middle being the final result. #bfc530#studentvoice#proactive
We try to be pro-active, addressing behavior and setting expectations in class. Having a supportive staff is so important. We compare what we each see in classroom, and work with the student to make changes. Knowing WHY it's happening is key to fixing it. #bfc530
Gm. We start with an asset based convo. Ss strengths first. Then eliminate possibility of lack of basic needs , breakfast, clean clothes, daycare, school supplies. Next team approach. Sometimes Ss allowed to be crunchy that day just because they are human. . #bfc530
I agree that actively teaching routines and procedures (even in secondary where we often assume Ss know how to do these things) eliminates many behavior problems #bfc530
I always try & remind my Ts that we r dealing w/11-14 YO's. They r not small adults. Their decision making sometimes reflects that. We need to recognize that. #bfc530
Happy Wednesday #BFC530. Luis an ELL teacher and Director from RI. Raining this am but improving later. Reviving an old rivalry against Tiverton tonight. Very excited.
Practices such as Restorative Justice works well. Music in the classroom can be very settling. Understanding some basic Neuroscience helps. Once the Limbic system kicks in, time becomes your friend. #BFC530

Agreed to the answer of listening, hear the issue first and see how you can support. Remind them you are there in it with them. We aren’t always as calm as we may appear. #bfc530
It makes a huge difference. Teaching Ss how to independently solve small problems, focusing on SEL skills & reflecting on behavior issues all leads to deep changes. #bfc530
Relationships come first. My principal gave the faculty some great advice at our first meeting of the year. He gave us permission to put aside time during instruction to get to know kids. Mini-conferences just a few minutes each day to establish relationships #BFC530
Also building relationships, as we all know. I end up missing a ton of my lunch to stay and let the Ss stay for extra help, hanging out etc. It made a big difference the 3 years I do it. Tires me out, but good in the long run. #bfc530
As we work to build positive relationships with our kids, who learn to respect and care for each other, proactivity takes flight...setting a strong foundation is critical to avoiding reactivity! #bfc530

Proactive. Everything from good classroom routines, discussing #ZonesofReg our feelings and how we can use strategies to help us re-focus, visual schedules for transition warnings, communication both w/ Ss and families, & reviewing when beh does occur/what happened #bfc530
That is a great point. I work at that age level (middle school) too and impulsivity is great and needs to be thought about when determining a course of action in dealing with behavior (not that is should be excused) It often leads to a great discussion with student #bfc530
I think at times it is both. Our Assistant Principal @Dsoares_MiddHS has been trained along with several Ts in using restorative practices. Hoping that mindset will make things better for all. #BFC530
And also, if a student has made bad choices, clean slate. What might perpetuate poor behavior is the student's perception that he or she is "problematic." The systemic issues are problematic. #BFC530
We use think time slips for most behaviors. we have a list of times and available classrooms to send kids for a reflection time. They debrief w the teacher before being sent back to their class. It seems to help reset some kids’ behaviors and keep the rest learning #bfc530
I have also started Privileges in my room...being able to use the good chairs, participating in Skype. Etc. These are extra and require work from me, so... and that is working.. #bfc530
Good morning! We are fortunate that there isn’t a lot of bad behavior at our school. We are proactive by teaching our students our expectations and instilling our character traits/core values in them. We praise them when caught doing the right things. #CharacterMatters#bfc530

#bfc530 I'm reading Troublemakers on my Kindle a little bit at a time each night. Highly recommend. It might bother you as you read it because you've been "that teacher." I know I have been! (I might still be sometimes yikes!) https://t.co/yNUvCpCzad
Love this! That strengths based approach is so important for kids! We all have our good and bad days and deep down we all just want to be cared about. #bfc530
I am also big on not giving a "do now" while Im standing at the door at beginning of class. I want my kids to talk w/each other which they dont get to do much in school especially w/decreasing recess/lunch times. I think it helps class behavior overall #bfc530
Flat out work refusal, even when all supports have been given, drives me absolutely bonkers. Especially when you know you did not even have to give any support. It is just work refusal. ERRRRRRRRR #bfc530
It starts w/ staff. We need to model this for kids and if our culture isn’t ok, it trickles (floods) down to them. It is not easy, see yesterday’s question... #bfc530
I am beyond gratefully say that I am not experiencing any major behavior problems this year. A quiet word seems to work best. Since I am new to the school, I have been working hard on building relationships. #bfc530
I think it's also important to remember that Ss negative behavior isn't about us and we shouldn't take it personally. Adolescents are all over the place emotionally & if we recognize those emotions instead of reacting to them, we can have helpful conversations. #bfc530
My favorite parenting book was called The Explosive Child by Ross Greene (I believe). He also has one for schools. It was fabulous and I recommend it to everyone! #bfc530
Relationships are everything. For teachers, for students and for the community at large. If you can relate on a personal level and understand someone’s why, you can pretty much accomplish anything! #bfc530
Behavior is ultimately really good feedback for us and an opportunity to reflect on our practice/strategies. Plus we get the opportunity to show a kiddo we believe in them. #BFC530
We have an after chat where we discuss things that we want to keep more private..that’s all..it is a different level of support for all of us. It is not crazy busy. #bfc530
Spot on! Ss can see through a facade. If they know your there for them they’ll generally work with you. Never back them into a corner, always give them a way to learn from the problem and move on. #BFC530

Oh wow..that is good to know.. thank you! I just want them to see that I work extra hard for them, but I am not a doormat. I also don’t like group punishments..so this works for me. #bfc530
Lots of people do "bell work" to keep kids busy while they take attendance. My kids use this time to get computers and start working on whatever activity we are working on. #bfc530
Funny, I was feeling badly about not having a Do Now rolling, as if I were wasting precious time. It still feels like a new year to me, haven’t settled in fully and I’m not sure why. #bfc530
Go to the website..I believe the form is there..right @msiwanicki ? We both did it separately and each of us got the app in less than three days @calm check it out Brian, you would like it! #bfc530

My school @IndianLakesES is growing in PBIS. This year, we have a team that meets regularly to discuss progress, problems & solutions. We’ve created resources for Ts & Ss that identify expectations, praise the positive for Ss & Ts, & address poor behavior #ILESSoars#BFC530

Research is in an elementary setting, but I'm learning lots about 11th and 12th grade even so. This week during reading conferences, I asked several students "When did you stop liking to read?" and several answered mid to late elementary school. That's a decade already 🙁 #BFC530
In HS, I do believe some behavior issues can be solved with placing the students in the correct classes. Teaching dual enrollment students who want to be there has made a big difference for me. #bfc530
#bfc530 For anyone who wants to apply for the free @calm app. @msiwanicki found the application (It takes 2 Iwanicki’s to get the job done). The meditations are a bit long..over 5 minutes but it is great!
Poor behavior is handled mostly in classrooms, so it depends on teacher. I try to be proactive by building relationships & engaging lessons, but even w/ that there are moments of misbehavior that I must address via quick conference, written reflection, family contact.
#bfc530
It can be so frustrating! I let my Ts know that the first few weeks are for teaching procedures & expectations. Although it can seem time consuming at first, it saves oodles of time in the long run. I think this is the hardest part of teaching! #bfc530
This is interesting, in a good way! I have seen bith ways be successful. Always like to hear stories like this in order to improve and change student and teacher behavior! #bfc530
However did you guess? Depending on who the child has as a teacher, it could be as early as 4th grade. When read-aloud stops in the classroom, when classroom libraries disappear, when reading with parents at home stops, when teachers don't recommend and confer #BFC530
For most of my students with distracting behavior, all they need is a quick moment to know I see them and care. But I won't act like I don't have about 4 students who are still struggling. But progress, was 7 last week.
#bfc530
For the most part, we are proactive in that we make expectations for S behavior very clear at the beginning of the year & a solid behavior plan is in place. We also try to recognize & reward positive behaviors with “Spark notes” to show Ss we see the good they are doing! #bfc530

I'm definitely seeing the difference between high school and middle. The impetus is really put on the children in this school to behave. But, there are proactive measures like mentors. And we in SPED do a lot of anticipating and addressing. #bfc530
Additionally, the push for building relationships with students is strong af LSMS. Getting to know our students will hopefully lay the groundwork for positive interactions and honest conversations with kids! #bfc530

Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes and prayers for the community of @CHornets1 and @wcsschools during #Florence .? We are still in the recovery process. #bfc530 (1)
Our district is working on PBIS this year. I’m really impressed with the planning, collaboration, and thoughtfulness that is going into the process. #bfc530
This would be a tremendous #teachablemoment for any class to contact us in the next few weeks to learn about the effects of a hurricane. Have a wonderful Wednesday #bfc530 (2)
Our school, @EESMaher, also uses #PBIS and #SEL to be proactive about behavior. In addition, our entire staff is doing a book study on #Culturize . Relationships are at the center of everything. #bfc530#oneccps

The climate has changed in our school for many reasons and behavior feels different, I a more positive way. We read Mindset for Learning and have morning meetings to learn & work on SEL. I implemented a S assess process for behavior & learning this week. #bfc530
So far, my poor behavior consists of cutting someone down verbally or swearing in my room. I’m reactive in the moment stopping the behavior immediately. Restorative practice using circles is one way I try to be proactive to help promote love and trust in the room. #bfc530
Dear Teacher Leaders,
Advocating for best practices, engaging others in inquiry, and challenging the status quo is a daunting task. Just keep telling yourself that #KidsDeserveIt You are making a difference. Happy Wednesday! #BFC530 One day at a time. Keep on Keeping on!
