  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:36 PM EST
I like to measure the effectiveness based on if students can not only tell what we learned but also why we learned it. #octmchat

  • MissLovelyWE Dec 6 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1 Students are engaged and diving in! #octmchat

  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:38 PM EST
A1: Great question - we've been talking about this a lot in our data teams. How do we know what our students learned from the experience? Class debates uncover a lot about student thinking. We've also been looking for application of knowledge to new situations. #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:39 PM EST
Angie Adrean, CAO at Worthington Schools...but most importantly, I get to learn with Tom and have also worked with and learned much from Matt! #octmchat
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:39 PM EST
A1: when the mathematical discourse in the classroom flows freely! #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
Q2 is coming soon. We have 4 prompts tonight with an end time of 9:00pm EST. #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Dec 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
    1) When my mathletes are acting like mathematicians! They demonstrate the 8 Mathematical Practices. Purposeful talking, risk taking, reflecting, spotting patterns, Own their learning and retain the information. #Joyful #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Dec 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: when studentsare engaged, discussing, manipulating, drawing, trying, don’t even know if I even there. #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:40 PM EST
well said - "what did students learn from the experience" #octmchat

  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
    Here is Q2 #octmchat.
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:41 PM EST
Love that kind of energy in a classroom! #octmchat
    In reply to @MathRocks73
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A2: When students are not talking not risking something is not working! #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Dec 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1: One of the ways I know my instructional practice is effective is when student thinking is sparked... I like @aadrean word "engaged" #octmchat
  • ShirleyEldridg3 Dec 6 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1 When the noticing and wondering continue #octmchat
  • MissLovelyWE Dec 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2 How do you know it wasn’t effective? When I get a stale response or look. When I need to ask someone to respond instead of having a group than all wants to answer and explain their thinking. #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: when I have to do more talking than the students. If I’m doing more of the work than the students. #octmchat
    In reply to @tomkaz10
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
    That's the look! #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: body language says a lot - engaged students are captivated and usually moving around in some way! #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:44 PM EST
A2: Confusion, lack of conversation/collaboration among table groups, lack of self-direction...which all leads to possible behavior issues. #octmchat
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:45 PM EST
Good indicator and can drain us as teachers #octmchat
    In reply to @MrsKelleyMath
  • chrissybug24 Dec 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: If instructional practices aren't effective, I see Ss off-task or hesitant to start... you can almost hear their confusion #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: I agree with so many of you about the lack of conversation! That always raises a red flag for me! "The one doing the talking is the one doing the learning." If the teacher is doing most of the talking, what are the students learning? #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Dec 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
A2: Students are not engaged. Lots of blank stares. Students say things like “I don’t really get it. I’m just doing what you did.” #octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Dec 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:46 PM EST
great point - the art of being a good questioner is so crucial - it gets students thinking and it's a great classroom management technique! #octmchat

  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:47 PM EST
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:47 PM EST
It is so important that we build relationships...with all students...so that they feel comfortable in our classrooms to talk and share ideas #octmchat

  • Kidsmathtalk Dec 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
Hi Everyone Desiree Math coach from MI #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
A2: Lack of clarity....We must "Make the path clear and then make it more clear!" #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Dec 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
Q2: Numbers may not tell the entire story, but they don't lie. I rely on the data from many, many, many formative assessments. I have felt some lessons were "Mathmazing", but when the students could not explain the conceptual interweaving of ideas, we have more to do. #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
A3:When they are confident in their work. If they drop their work in the green tray vs the red it’s a good indicator of my effectiveness. #octmchat
    In reply to @MattAnderson289
  • MissLovelyWE Dec 6 @ 8:49 PM EST
If we are struggling with a problem I like to ask kids what the easiest part is, or what they know for sure. Have a little success before moving on. If I have a tough crowd sometimes I make mistake intentionally because it keeps them on their toes! #octmchat
    In reply to @BaileyJodie
  • ShirleyEldridg3 Dec 6 @ 8:50 PM EST
A2 Hearing "I need you to explain X" right after you thought you had just given a dazzling explaination of X #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3: I think we have gotten better about making student voice a priority in many areas of our planning as educators - student buy-in so important! #octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Dec 6 @ 8:51 PM EST
Green tray, red tray? How does one decide where to put their paper? #octmchat
    In reply to @MrsKelleyMath, @MattAnderson289
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:51 PM EST
Thanks for joining us, Desiree! #octmchat
    In reply to @Kidsmathtalk
  • MathRocks73 Dec 6 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3: We are trying quality improvement in the classrooms doing small scale inquiry. After a cycle or lesson (or PD) a plus/delta is done on what liked liked and what they’d change. Lots of stories of students buying into this. #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:52 PM EST
I agree that multiple sources of formative assessment are key! Such an important skill to be able to plan opportunities to gather all the right data. #octmchat
    In reply to @JacquiLehmkuhl
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3: I am a really big fan of surveying my students about how they feel about our class on a regular basis. After I survey them I share the results and we talk about changes all of us can make to improve our learning environment #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:52 PM EST
A3: Student-centered classrooms are key! Students must be engaged and have permission to fail, persevere and fail-forward! #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Dec 6 @ 8:53 PM EST
Hi, Desiree! Thanks for joining #octmchat
    In reply to @Kidsmathtalk
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:53 PM EST
    A3: What if a student planned a lesson? #octmchat
  • AmyWettengel Dec 6 @ 8:53 PM EST
A3: allow students to give feedback about what happened in class that helped them to "get it" and what they need tomorrow to further their understanding #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Dec 6 @ 8:53 PM EST
A3: Thinking about how many new connections students were able to make as a result of the instructional practice used. Did I help them push and extend their thinking? #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:53 PM EST
When students turn work in they have to self assess how they think they did and place their paper in a green, yellow or red tray. It’s reflection tool that gives me a lot of insight on a student’s confidence in their understanding. #octmchat

Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:54 PM EST
Ave done this lots with teachers but never with students. What a great idea. #octmchat
    In reply to @MathRocks73
  • MissLovelyWE Dec 6 @ 8:54 PM EST
A3 Students are a huuuge part of my reflection. I don’t like to plan math lessons too far in advance. I plan my whole group mini lesson the day before based on how guided math went. I have a very vocal group of students. They let me know exactly what the like! #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Dec 6 @ 8:54 PM EST
Hi Christina! Glad to be here. Hope you are doing well! #octmchat

    Here is Q4 #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:55 PM EST
A3: Students are at the center of our instruction - their role is essential! Expecting them to reflect on learning, ask questions, use #notice #wonder, and establishing a culture of curiosity is central for me. #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:55 PM EST
even better....allow the students to teach the lesson and share their thinking with their peers...Making Thinking Visible! #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Dec 6 @ 8:55 PM EST
A3: As a math coach, I try out new things in classrooms all the time... I find myself asking Ss (and Ts)... "What do you think? Was the helpful? How could we make it better?"... Ss are definitely my temperature check of how things are going #octmchat
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:55 PM EST
It really grounds you as a teacher when you get to see what your students really think! #octmchat
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:56 PM EST
What do you think? What do you wonder? #octmchat
    In reply to @chrissybug24
  • tomkaz10 Dec 6 @ 8:56 PM EST
Love this type of reflective planning #octmchat
    In reply to @MissLovelyWE
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: I always start by reflecting on the questions I asked. Usually I will find that I spent too much time in DoK 1 and that was the root of why a practice failed. It probably wasn’t the practice that was inherently wrong but how I facilitated it. #octmchat
    In reply to @tomkaz10
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Dec 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A3: Authenticity Matters! My Christmas wish is that my mathletes be true to themselves, to be open, to be flexible to new ideas. I see them hiding, lurking, and desiring tricks. 'Tis the Season of Understanding ~ Not answer getting. #octmchat
  • MattAnderson289 Dec 6 @ 8:57 PM EST
A4: conversations with trusted colleagues go a long way in providing support and having a soundboard for trying new ideas! Developing positive relationships with peers is so helpful! #octmchat #PLN
  • ShirleyEldridg3 Dec 6 @ 8:58 PM EST
I need to use things like red tray/green tray more often! I also like to ask if there is any topic/type of question that would cause them to panic if I gave them a quiz right that moment...hoping to help them feel comfortable with the idea of not knowing YET. #octmchat
    In reply to @MrsKelleyMath, @MattAnderson289
  • aadrean Dec 6 @ 8:58 PM EST
Don't forget about JOURNALING in Math class.......Writing across the content matters! #octmchat
  • Kidsmathtalk Dec 6 @ 8:58 PM EST
How are people planning for lessons? I am working on a lesson planning overview document to help teachers be more intentional with instructional practices #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:59 PM EST
A4: I get my best ideas from kids - so I usually ask them. What worked? What didn't work? What do you need from me to learn/understand this better? #octmchat
  • MrsKelleyMath Dec 6 @ 8:59 PM EST
So true. My best growth happens in between classes when the other math teacher and I reflect on a lesson we just taught and what adjustments we will make before teaching it next. #octmchat
    In reply to @MattAnderson289
  • AmyWettengel Dec 6 @ 8:59 PM EST
A4: if it wasn't a complete face plant, I let it stew awhile. I extract pieces and test out to determine exactly where things feel short. Revise and try again. #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Dec 6 @ 8:59 PM EST
A4: I do mid-course corrections all the time! And... for those of us lucky to have "bell 2"... we can make tweaks along the way! (Then we just need to apologize to our 1st bell students) #octmchat
