#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Carrie Baughcum 6/7/8 Special Education teacher. My daughter’s taught me and reminded me that I loved to draw. Now I draw every single day and can't see my life without it! #LearnLap
Hi all! I'm AnnMarie, a 4th grade teacher, from Wisconsin. I'm looking forward to learning from you all. I downloaded Sketchbook a while ago but I'm not an artist. Looking for inspiration. #LearnLAP
Courtney, 3rd grade from Arkansas! I’ve always loved to doodle!! Still fairly new to #Sketchnoting but I’m bringing it into my class gradually! #LearnLAP
Phil from Northern, VA signing in. Last time I remember "loving to draw" was probably middle or elementary school. I compared myself a lot at a young age so I gave up. :( #learnlap@SarahCaseyPE I know would probably love this chat, she is big on sketch notes!
Thank you @HeckAwesome & @teresagross625 for moderating #LearnLAP tonight! So excited for the conversation!!!
I'm Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Arlington Heights (same district as Carrie Baughcum)!
Teresa, MS Literacy Teacher, NY.
I never thought of myself as a "drawer" until I tried sketchnoting a couple of years ago. Prior to that I never loved drawing. This has opened my eyes! This was one of my first.
#learnlap
Hey, all! I'm Melissa from Michigan. I am a K-12 Special Ed Teacher. So excited for tonight!!! The last time I remember loving to draw was...yesterday! :) #LearnLAP
Kirstyn from South Florida! 11th grade US History teacher and honestly can't remember the last time I drew something at all! Melting crayons on canvases though..yes :) #learnlap
Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Great to be with #LearnLAP tonight! Let's keep the learning fun and awesome as always...for our kids!
I’m Steve, a TI from Canandaigua, NY. I’m excited to learn about sketchnoting from my friend @teresagross625 It’s been a long time since I loved to draw... #LearnLAP
Linda, AP from Stonewall Elementary in Winchester, VA checking in. Drawing doesn’t come very easily to me, but I love coloring ;) Therapeutic! #learnlap
✨Hi, #LearnLAP - I'm Kimberly from Nebraska! I teach 7th grade ELA. I've always been a note doodler, old school though, haven't tried anything fancy, yet!
Let me follow directions. I’m Dana, 4th grade teacher in northern burbs of Chicago. I’m an AVID sketchnoter that loves sharing ideas and learning with my Ss #learnlap
Hello #learnlap! I'm Carly, 7-12 Social Studies teacher from Wisconsin. I gained a love for drawing while I was in high school -- I took an art class to try something new. I wish I would have tried it sooner!
I'm Susan from Indiana. I teach 4th grade. First year back from leave of absence. My mind is blown with everything that has changed in 7 years! #LearnLAP
Not going to make it to #Learnlap tonight! Too much #adulting to do... Laundry, plans for tomorrow... Grading. All the things that are way less exciting than tonight's #sketchnoting chat! Look forward to catching up!
Forgot the last part! I enjoy doodling and playing with handlettering. I'm too much of a perfectionist though and it ends up stressing me out! Lol #LearnLAP
A1: It cements learning because it equates the image with the written word. All of these graphics make a lasting image. Plus for some Ss this way of notetaking make learning easier. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@teresagross625, @HeckAwesome, @PaulSolarz
A1. I think Ss are creative by nature, and it has been "educated" out of them. There are some that will not like sketchnotes... but it is an opportunity to unlock creativity for others #LearnLAP
A1: It can help students make meaning of what they are reading. This is an example of previewing SCOPE using sketchnoting. @ScholasticTeach@_KELewis#learnlap
A1: no more telling kids to quit doodling! Just doodle with meaning! instead of random pictures, doodle what we are learning about or what you are thinking that is connected to our skill/book #learnlap
A1: This process can enhance learning for visual learners and hands on learners! Personally, when I write things down myself I retain the information much better #learnlap
In reply to
@teresagross625, @HeckAwesome, @PaulSolarz
A1 too often when Students 'take notes' they are really just 'shalowly transcribing' and not actually thinking. The sketchnote process provides deeper thinking into the content and makes new connections. #Learnlap
A1 Many Kindergarten naturally show their thinking by drawing. I’m learning from them. Encouraging them to keep synthesizing their learning this way throughout the years is wonderful. #learnlap
Learning more about the thinking behind thinking visually empowers us to think differently about how we use visuals and sketchnoting with our students https://t.co/yVopKfgLOI#LearnLAP
A1: It can help students take a complex process and flesh out the ideas through drawing. It activates other parts of the brain which will also add to a higher likelihood of retention! #learnlap@SarahCaseyPE@misskoplin
A1: the connection between hand and mind, and the increased retention is well documented. And whether or not you like the term "learning styles" Ss and Ts all have preferences as to how they learn. #LearnLAP
A1: for many of my Ss, #sketchnotes have forced them to think more deeply about the subject. Notes are truly their own, with their own words and ideas instead of copying mine. Also shows them they don't have to be a perfect artist to make use of art. #Learnlap
Processing information is and will always be important; #sketchnoting should be a tool in their tool box (complete with flair pens-the best) #learnlap Sketchnoting is personaland developing what works for you (them) is important!
We’ve just started using sketchnoting - been an occasional exercise, this week will be implementing for true note taking. Some kids still not willing to ‘let go’, but others are really listening and SO busy getting word and sketches down. +interest. +listening +notes #LearnLAP
A1 Creating visuals/summaries helps us make sense of our learning. It forces connections to be made & interpretations to be processed. We need to allow Ss to think/analyze & share their learning. We need to empower their minds & voices. Sketchnoting helps that process. #LearnLAP
A1: Andrea Weikum from Bismarck ND. When Ss #sketchnote they are engaging many parts of their brains, focusing, visualizing - all items help learning stick! #learnlap
A1: It helps student synthesize the information by thinking of what image they need to create to represent their thinking. It also records the learning process. #LearnLAP
A1) I think students have become such great visual learners over the years. I see a lot of students tend to really do well when they are able to see what they are learning and process it better #LearnLAP#walearnlap
So do you give the students information and then ask them to "sketch it"? I have not done this before, but it seems like a neat idea that I would like to try based on examples I have seen. #learnlap
A1 the act of drawing an idea improves retention. It also engages the creative mindset every child is born with. It helps create meaning instead of just consuming it. #LearnLAP
For a lot of people doodling is fun! It takes the act of note taking from being a passive copying from the book type work to a higher order thinking analyzing type of work. #learnlap
A1 I’ve always believed (and there is research to back this up) that the manual aspect of writing while reading or listening can help retention. The extra thought process of converting the thought into a picture may help even more. #LearnLAP
A1: It would enhance learning by allowing students to take difficult topics (changes in political party systems tariffs, etc. for US History) &allow them to synthesize it in a way they understand. I had a student do this one year, but I didn't know it was sketchnoting! #learnlap
Brandy G from Indiana, 8th grade US History teacher. My students tell me I’m an awesome stick figure artist. I can’t draw, but love doodling! My staff meeting notes are proof! #learnlap
Turning my hobby of tinkering with graphic design into something productive 😀 Have to thank @MrsSchmohl for all of my creativity and interest in graphics #bestartteacherever
A1. I think Ss are creative by nature, and it has been "educated" out of them. There are some that will not like sketchnotes... but it is an opportunity to unlock creativity for others #LearnLAP
I did it to replace "notetaking" They read 2 pages of information and then created their sketchnotes. Today they started using them to answer questions and do an edpuzzle. #LearnLAP
A1: The process of #Sketchnotes allows us to tap into even more learning styles. When students create, they remember! It also gives creative students an outlet and increased buy-in! #LearnLAP
A1: It cements learning because it equates the image with the written word. All of these graphics make a lasting image. Plus for some Ss this way of notetaking make learning easier. #LearnLAP
In reply to
@teresagross625, @HeckAwesome, @PaulSolarz
A1: There are so many ways that students can draw out a concept, but writing out a definition could be more difficult. Drawing is another way to express the same concepts. #learnlap
“It causes you to listen at a different level” ..... Making Learning Visible: Doodles Makes Memories Stick via Mindshift https://t.co/HRIXsgIyBB#LearnLAP
Tough one, but sometimes you need to let perfectionism go. Easier said than done, but have fun with it. Turn a mistake into a new part of your sketch. #learnlap
So do you tell them to draw sketches to represent what they read? I'm just trying to get a feel for how to introduce this to my students so they don't just write notes down. #learnlap
A1 #Sketchnotes are higher level thinking. Ss have to synthesize, make connections & visualize what they want to communicate. That’s great stuff! #Learnlap
My favorite thing is that even those not willing to take a risk just yet, are still producing more notes than they ever would have without a guided outline. I love that! Learning so much #LearnLAP
Q2: Maybe students could draw their idea for a vocabulary word on one post it note. Then all of the post it notes could be put on a larger sheet to create a visual word cloud. #learnlap
Evening #LearnLAP ! Jumping in late! Kimberly from north TX.
A1 The more things we do with the information, the more connections we make in our brain pathways to anchor our learning! #sketchnotes use more areas of the brain!
A2 I like to think of myself as the king of post its lol Get kids to start creating summaries or main ideas on post its around notes/themes/pages. Have them practices doodles/word groups to represent ideas. Let students be creative, don't limit their possibilities. #LearnLAP
A1) If we take the “art” out of sketch notes, it really just becomes a tool for making thinking visible...we are ALL visual learners...just look at all the visuals we are presented with daily #LearnLAP
A1: no more telling kids to quit doodling! Just doodle with meaning! instead of random pictures, doodle what we are learning about or what you are thinking that is connected to our skill/book #learnlap
Students need to see examples and all different kinds of examples; they also need the markers or resources available to them. Students should start with a few tips such as add color, make words bold, use arrows... #learnlap
A2: You could assign a drawing for each note with these items! Then, creativity would be sparked and it would allow students to continue this in the future if it enhances their individual learning. #learnlap
In reply to
@teresagross625, @PaulSolarz, @HeckAwesome
A2: ask Ss to draw icons that connect to main ideas in the margins or have them identify unfamiliar words from a story, write them on a Post-It with a couple word def of their own, and have them put an icon with it. #Learnlap
A1. #Sketchnoting may be a great learning tool for some learners so it’s worth exposing students to. Some may find that’s it’s the right tool for them. (Can’t see my Grade 10 son jumping on board though.) #LearnLAP
A2: as a 1:1 school, google drawing is an awesome way to let them sketch note within their notes! Give them a minute break to sketch what it looks like to them! #learnlap
A2 ask Ss to summarize or pull ideas from something they are reading, make a note of Qs they have, had Ss read a Spanish story and then visualize it #learnlap
In reply to
@teresagross625, @PaulSolarz, @HeckAwesome
A2: Model how you used sketchnoting to understand a subject, or text. Then have students share the different ways they would draw out their thinking of the same topic. Celebrate how everyone draws and thinks in the way it makes sense for them. #Learnlap
As I read a chapter on UDL last weekend, I was reminded of how much fun sketchnoting is! Learners of all ages appreciate being able to take notes in a way that makes sense to them #learnlap
A1. Sketchnoting gives Ss the opportunity to summarize learning, reflect, make a visual representation in 3D style format to display their thinking style and patterns. This allows them for reflection to study notes, and remember things better. #learnlap
A2: I'd say starting small, with having students sketching maybe one idea from the lesson and then gradually increase to build student confidence! #learnlap
A2 I'm a total noob to this but I tried a month or 2 ago. Here is my post on my first attempt. Went well. I,am encouraging Ss to sketch my mini lectures now since I gonpretty fast! #learnlaphttps://t.co/34kNMTsgSy
Processing information is and will always be important; #sketchnoting should be a tool in their tool box (complete with flair pens-the best) #learnlap Sketchnoting is personaland developing what works for you (them) is important!
A2: Some Ss want you to turn them lose while others need a little more guidance. I like giving them some images that connect to what we are learning & letting them "borrow" my images. Before long they are off & running w/out my nudges. #learnlap
I started by showing a youtube video I found to show the process and showed them my example, and let them go. Some kids did more text, but that's ok #LearnLAP
A2:By having them begin small - putting a small chunk of information into a sketch, and help them build upon their summarization/sketchnoting with practice. #LearnLAP
A2. Start an icon library for your class. A series of simple symbols that will mean something when using them, like a visual dictionary #WriteInTheMargains#LearnLAP
A2: I teach them how to play with fonts, textures, sizes to represent their ideas and then add pictures in as they are comfortable. Then, show the ways pieces are connected. #LearnLAP
A1: no more telling kids to quit doodling! Just doodle with meaning! instead of random pictures, doodle what we are learning about or what you are thinking that is connected to our skill/book #learnlap
Great point! I think this is a great way to differentiate for learners, and different learning styles. It could be used as one way students receive and gather information #learnlap
A2 Post-its and notecards force the Ss to use a limited amount of space and they have to decide the best use of that space for the information! #LearnLAP
A2 I think I stepped over the baby steps and jumped in the deep end. I can see post it notes working, but I was so excited i just wanted to do it! #LearnLAP
My school likes to summarize paragraphs in the margins after underlining main ideas and circling key words. I've been changing written summary with Sketchnotes #learnlap
A2: Our first #Sketchnotes were done to summarize what students learned during our Random Acts of Kindness Project. We went with paper and markers, since then we've dabbled digitally, they loved both! #LearnLAP
A1 We want our students to VISUALIZE in all areas. Improves retention, boosts creativity, and reduces anxiety! It’s true! Ask an autistic kid. 😉 #LearnLAP
A2 I started using them with read alouds to help them process the stories but use them in math more recently They seem to understand the concepts more when they can sketch pictures of them. #LearnLAP
A2: I have considered challenging my students with creating flashcards to review key terms/concepts... They must draw out the concept instead of defining it in words. This would stop Ss from just copying down definitions! #learnlap
A2: I've been using #sketchnotes for a couple of years in the classroom. If you've been nervous about where to start, my reflection and process might help you https://t.co/LzQ7XkCBpw#Learnlap
A2: I started my kids last week by having them sketchnote about just the characters and setting of a story. They can do that on post-its and place them where the description came from. #LearnLAP
A2: Rather than writing out your exit ticket on a post-it note, SKETCH it! Take all of the post-it notes from the class period and create "cloud". #LearnLAP
A2: I could give students note cards to try sketchnoting when the read the textbook or ask them to try doodles on the side of their notebooks when they take notes in class-build it from there! #learnlap
A2 I often show them my own sketchnotes from my meeting (keeps me engaged), last time I brought all of my colored pens and the whole table of teachers shared! #learnlaP
A1: I remember when I used to doodle and teachers thought I was off task. Now I encourage my students to use picture for science notes or when learning to take their own notes #Learnlap
We started with a built-in exercise in a hyperdoc, but the most success came from creating a Sketchnote about themselves for their writing portfolio. My 6th graders’ favorite topic 😂. That’s where I saw light dawning! #LearnLAP
Struggling to teach #sketchnoting to a 5th grader who is an artist. Doesn't get the concept of a quick sketch. Has to spend all her time on one pic! #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP peeps you are ridiculously amazing and all kinds of awesomesauce and like that I am already 5 minutes behind!! So much thinking! So many wonderful ideas and thoughts!!!! #LearnLap
A2) I have my Ss use post-its & keep them in their books. They sketch images to show new words they've learned, characters, character feelings, etc. I'm trying to incorporate more sketchnoting. #learnlap
I’m considering asking Ss to pick a scene w/dialogue from their novel & sketching what they visualize. Is this what we r talking about #sketchnotes#LearnLAP
Like a proud papa, I save all of the #Sketchnotes that people share with me when they read #LearnLAP ("Learn Like a PIRATE"). They mean a great deal to me! Here are a few...
A2: I'd start w/ having them sketch in margins & would gradually give them more space/freedom 2 create w/ notes. My kids struggle 2 make creative decisions sometimes-they want me 2 tell them what 2 do, so I might have them partner up & collaborate on their sketchnotes #learnlap
A3: for me it is ME letting go and giving my kids more credit - believe that they can take notes and that sketchnoting will give them the freedom to take notes in the way that best works for them #LearnLAP
A2 this yr. I play a symbolic game where ss draw emotions. Practicing words that are not visible is a great way to even the playing field w/regards to drawing skills. Emotions are open to visual interpretation. #LearnLAP
A3 Sketchnoting is an amazing way to empower student voice and choice. give students freedom to organize and choose how to demonstrate learning. This is a great way to foster & encourage creativity. Let students design assessments based on learning. #LearnLAP
A2 I love what @HeckAwesome said on the Time to Teach podcast...they can sort small pieces of info in lots of ways. Making different kinds of connections. Deeper thinking. #LearnLAP
A3: As educators, we can incorporate drawing images in our lessons, to further connect an idea to an image. This would be a direct way to teach our students to use the same approach if helpful #learnlap
In reply to
@teresagross625, @HeckAwesome, @PaulSolarz
A3. All subjects areas can have #sketch notes infused into what is already going on. Vocab, visual reminders, road maps, story maps, chapter organization, scientific processes, review...the list is endless #LearnLAP
A2: When sketchnoting show students how to play with fonts, textures, and sizes to represent their ideas. They can add pictures in as they are comfortable. They can also show the ways pieces are connected. #LearnLAP
A3: They are already taking notes, so sketchnoting provides the freedom for their interpretation of the concepts. When they study, they understand it more than if I hand them a bunch of written notes. #LearnLAP
From " The Miseducation of the Doodle" By @SunniBrown increased our ability to focus, our retention and recall. Allow us to see mental imagery, enhance access to the creative and problem-solving, while keeping conscious mind working via https://t.co/4wO5vlbkog#LearnLAP
A3: #Sketchnotes are the PERFECT way to encourage creativity and deepen knowledge, and check for understanding with ANYTHING! We used them to demonstrate understanding of figurative language, collaborate with classmates and other classes, and now it's a review tool! #LearnLAP
A3 I like sticky notes in text with a quick pic of image, new vocab word, or thought #LearnLAP
Need help - I WANT Ss to sktechnote during read aloud but worried they aren't drawing relative to text. thoughts?
A3. Problem finding & solving. When Ss are learning to become problem finders, then designing a solution... #sketchnotes can be an effective way to begin the design process and work towards solutions #LearnLAP
A3: sketchnote standards! Instead of just writing out goals- create visuals to help all Ss connect and synthesize learning to relevancy in life/school #learnlap
A3 1 project Ss can do tgis unit is a trading card project. 1 piece is creating a representative sketch on the card 'front'. Can just cut and paste something. Need to 'own' it #learnlap
I think it's important for Ts to try it too; instead of taking notes at faculty mtg or PD day, put out some fun pens and paper and see what people up with and what they can sketch; people visually represent things in so many different ways #learnlap my notes from @jmattmiller
A3 I tried having Ss sketchnote out what they remembered about story from day before. Then allowed them to reread text. Followed up with adding to their sketchnotes. #LearnLAP
A3: I used the sketchnote process to prepare a lecture for a class I’ve taught six times. Even though it was information I was familiar with, it helped me think of the content in an innovative way. #teachlap
A3 Started a new unit today. Instead of traditional KWL intro, we used sketchnotes in our notebooks to show what we already know & think and note Qs we have. #learnlap
A3: After the Do Now, my next part of class is a lecture before we do independent activities. However, I want to use @screencastify more, I could see myself having students use sketch notes for those screencastify lessons to help them with retention! #learnlap
A3: as a T we could model #sketchnotes with our lessons. Then ask Ss where they see it would fit best with things they do every day. The Ss perspective is most valuable! #learnlaP
A3: I had my kids sketchnote while I read aloud, something I already did. Only, I didn’t show them the illustrations until after I had read it. I wanted them to depend on their own imaginations while they sketched. #LearnLAP
A3: Give Students space to explore and opportunities to share ideas with one another. Sketchnoting is all about freedom and ownership. That is what makes it so awesome! #Learnlap
That sounds like it could be great, especially for your learners who struggle. They could pause and rewind the video whenever they needed to. #LearnLAP
A3: academic vocab is huge right now as we prep for istep. Sketch noting would be a great way to have my visual learners really take these words to the next level and ensure they fully understand the words and make connections with pictures. #learnlap
A3 You can tiny sketch stops in your instruction. Give Ss a minute think and sketch before you go on to more content. Let them compare, share, show off even. 😉 #learnlap
A3. It's allowing Ss to take the lead in their learning by visualizing what they are thinking and taking in in info. and showing us how they are comprehending this information as well! It makes it easier for them to study their own ideas and patterns of thinking! #learnlap
A2: I started my kids last week by having them sketchnote about just the characters and setting of a story. They can do that on post-its and place them where the description came from. #LearnLAP
A3 Ts need to try too; put out markers and paper at faculty meetings and PD days; I'd been taking notes like this for years and never knew it had a name; had not thought of teaching students the skill but almost everyone loves to color and you retain info! #learnlap
I have to accept that I can Sketch note even if there is NO WAY mine will ever look as neat and cool and organized as some of the examples being shared here!
#LearnLAP
I like this thought. Students will take notes that make sense to them, and help them learn the information, rather than trying to read over already produced notes. #learnLap
A2) I think that students definitely learn and retain more when they can draw pictures or put the information into their own words. A lot of students like using color post it notes as well on their notebooks to help them. #LearnLAP#walearnlap
A3: It would be neat to draw out a story problem in math. I can see that sketchnoting could make some complicated mathematical concepts more concrete for students. #LearnLAP
A3 when creating anchor charts with a class to remember key points, I ask them for a visual that would help us represent our thinking- what would trigger our memory? Each anchor chart has a title, brief defn, and an image #learnlap
I need to to get my littlest 1 in bed. Thanks for this @teresagross625 and @HeckAwesome! If anyone wants to stop by #XPLAPCamp we are slow chatting how to,bring some "super bowl" hype to the classroom! #learnlap
Here are some more #Sketchnotes people have shared with me over the years for #LearnLAP... I love looking at these (as well as their #BookSnaps)! I get a glimpse inside everyone's heads to see what they're taking away from "Learn Like a PIRATE!" Thanks for sharing everyone!
Tell you what too: When it comes to the assessment, if they are comfy with Sketchnotesd, you can allow them to sketch out their answers. Multiple Means of Representation!! #LearnLap#udlchat
It's funny how we compartmentalize what we do 7 how or if we transfer it. I've taken notes like this in my journals when reading ed pd books, but never during meetings or w/ Ss. #LearnLAP
Want a sure fire way to get your Ss to Sketchnote?! Pick up a pen and doodle with them....this simple act will unlock so much magic in your class!! #LearnLAP
A3: I use #sketchnoting for heart maps at the beginning of the year for writing topics of things people love and outside the heart are the dislikes #LearnLAP
A3: I think we could incorporate sketch noting into our annotations of texts. They're already making things that surprise them, questions they have, key points, etc. We could tie sketches & doodles in with that #learnlap
A3 I think it goes well with a vocab list. Instead of just listing words/definitions. Make connections with arrows, illustrations, and colors. #LearnLAP
I'm already thinking about how I'll introduce this at the beginning of next yr as part of routine & community building. But, I don't think there's a 'wrong' way. #LearnLAP
A3:Just sketchnoted (in the margins)an info passage on volcanoes w gr 2. It helped them make sense of some detailed content & Ss used it to write an ext response #Learnlap
Paul...when I see sketchnotes like this, I think sketchnoting isn’t for me, because I can’t draw line that. I know stick figures are fine, but people don’t show examples like that. Not all kids can or want to draw. What do I tell them? #LearnLAP
Q3. We use sketch noting when I do read alouds from novels. It helps the Ss keep the stories in their heads and I can see if they are comprehending what I’m reading based on their drawings. No comprehension worksheets needed #LearnLAP
Think about your doodles. What age level drawings do they remind you of? Is that the last time you loved drawing? ...it takes time and practice and most of all sketchnotes are only for you!! #LearnLAP
A3: We can introduce them to our classes and then use them for brain breaks, homework, extended learning, etc. I think kids would really enjoy it though! #learnlap
When I told my kids they could draw what they thought they knew, they were so excited! AND I think I got a better glimpse into what they really already know. #LearnLAP
So when you sketch note do you give them any guiding directions, or do you just give them the reading and say "have fun, go draw"? Tonight is really opening my mind to trying these!! #learnlap
But that being said, we as teachers still believe that showing students "exemplars" gives students something to aspire to & if we teach them Growth Mindset and risk-taking, they should see Sketchnoting as a fun challenge that they can be very creative with! #LearnLAP
I found a few ‘how to’ videos and created examples with them. Many of my middle schoolers are too concrete and ‘compliant’ to let go without ‘instructions’ - even if it sort of goes against the concept #LearnLAP
A5: I think of light radiating off the word positivity, a helping hand by helpful, and a hammer on a nail for hardworking! Drawing these images helped me to remember my 3 chosen characteristics #learnlap
You tell them they can all speak fluent “emoji”...talk to them in terms of icons, not beautiful posters. Icons and emojis...they get, and then they take off on their own! I promise! #LearnLAP
That is my thought as well, Bridget. I don't want this to be a compliancy thing, I want students to just sketch out their ideas, but also want to make sure they are sketching down ideas that are going to help them meet the goal of the standard. #learnlap
I've got lots of examples like that where my students are still showing that they were able to demonstrate understanding of the topic. I'll find some! #learnlap
I think your students will rise to whatever method you choose. If you dive in and doodle with them even fewer tools and explanation is needed. #LearnLAP
Ask @HeckAwesome if she thinks her beginner's sketchnote guide would be good. I used that to introduce my students and it helped tremendously! #learnlap
My less artistic, more literal Ss did a lot of text, but just being able to arrange the concepts and make connections will be meaningful to all your Ss. #LearnLAP
I LOVE the idea of a forum for families to ask questions that students help answer.-gives your Ss a sense of ownership and responsibility. Your next Pirate book should definitely be Learn Like a Pirate! #learnlap
When we think about the process and about the learning we start to see that there are so many wonderful ways to bring technology into the sketchnoting process. Here is my and my student's favorite.... https://t.co/0GkvWr1fus#LEARNLap
Would you like to receive a REMINDer about next week's #LearnLAP chat? We'll send you one 30 minutes prior to each week's chat if you sign up here: https://t.co/LcFj9iEB6b
A6 - I love to give the option. For some it is easier digitally. Although I do believe that for note-taking, by hand is quicker. For review, finalizing, the digital option adds more opportunities for ideas and learning - and fun #LearnLAP
Do it!!!! I had not a single student complaint, and every student had something of substance. That is huge in 7th grade. I had them answer questions after they made their sketchnotes #LearnLAP
A6: give them options. They need choice! I don't know much about technology with drawing, but maybe Google Drawings could be an option along with pen & paper #learnlap
I give choice in assignments that allow students to create sketchnotes to submit as their product for assessment. I think it is a fabulous way to show learning and mastery. #LearnLAP
A5 I've been doing Sketchnote since digitally with my grade ones using Draw and Tell from @duckduckmoose they love it. They can use many different tool and record their thinking, win win 😀 #Learnlap
A6: Some of my students are great with graphic design, snapchat, etc. Instead of in class sketchnoting, they could take it home and review the material on their own too #learnlap
A6: Research would need to take place in order to find sites that would be most effective in using this approach. Cannot wait to hear what resources others use and recommend! #learnlap
A6 You can design on an iPad, iPhone. Combine your words, sketches with clip art and images. It creates a safer space for those who aren't comfortable with their artistic skills or if they are perfectionists like me. Technology empowers voice and confidence. #LearnLAP
Did your student feel prepared for the end of unit test? Or did the questions at the end kind of guide them to that point? Did they sketch based on lecture or reading? Sorry for the 1000 questions! #learnlap

A7: I'll be honest, I almost skipped this chat because I don't usually sketch note, but I'm glad I didn't. Totally want to try this out in my classroom! This is absolutely fascinating! Thank you so much for helping me change my mindset! #learnlap@ERobbPrincipal
Q7: I will definitely be using this in my future classroom! It enhances learning in a fun and creative way, further engaging students! I still wonder what sites and technology would aid teachers best when using this approach, or if paper and pencil is best #learnlap

A7. I would like to incorporate it into instruction more often and have it be an available option for response. Maybe even try giving kids sketches and have them have to figure out what material/subject they are for. #LearnLAP
A7 I love to roll out butcher paper on class tables and challenge them to sketch note as a group anytime I teach to the whole class. If they have a reading assignment, they sketchnote from text then discuss what struck them #LearnLAP
A7: I will definitely be using this in my future classroom! It enhances learning in a fun and creative way, further engaging students! I still wonder what sites and technology would aid teachers best when using this approach, or if paper and pencil is best #learnlap

We just started the unit, but the questions were used to check their sketchnotes. They are doing an edpuzzle and an activity based on the concent as well. Sketchnote is their first stepping stone. #LearnLAP
A7 I want to try it with my professional reading first. Then I want to offer it as a choice for my students. I want to model risk taking and do some with them. I will never ask them to do something I don't want to do. Never force an idea. Give suggestions. #LearnLAP
I am right there with you! Debated on choosing this chat, but definitely want to incorporate this in my future classroom! It is such a creative and fascinating approach indeed #learnlap
A6 You can design on an iPad, iPhone. Combine your words, sketches with clip art and images. It creates a safer space for those who aren't comfortable with their artistic skills or if they are perfectionists like me. Technology empowers voice and confidence. #LearnLAP
A7 Absolutely will continue on the journey with Sketchnoting, I was hooked when I first saw it! I have a @Buncee presentation with Carries My Pencil Made Me Do It all set 😀 #Learnlap
If you've read "Learn Like a PIRATE" and would like to connect with others at your grade level, add your Twitter handle to the #LearnLAP PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
Also, connect with others by following them tonight! We learn so much from each other! :)
A7: Officially in my bag of tricks. So excited to bring the idea to my inclusion classes! Do people set guidelines regarding a sketch vs. Picasso style artwork? What does that look like in your classes? #LearnLAP

Overall I would say yes. Sometimes I ask for a sketchnote as an answer to one question, and sometimes the sketchnote is the whole assessment. Since the Ss know that the drawing quality isn't what's graded, they're not anxious about it at all. #learnlap

I'm in the process of teaching my high school students how to sketchnote. My population of learners could really benefit from this kind of note-taking.I can't wait to see how empowered they feel when they put sketchnoting into practice in their core classes. #LearnLAP
I'm thinking about giving students the answer key to answer keys to guided notes and having students make sketchnotes based off of them with some guiding questions at the end and then collecting the guided notes at the end. Thoughts? #learnlap

A7: I'm going to keep on keepin' on with #SketchNotes - LOVE THEM! ❤️
What's your favorite free app or site for students to use with digital #SketchNotes? #LearnLAP
All kinds of Visual Notetaking are helpful and connect to the brain in meaningful ways. Here, @MarySurber6 and her kids share story development visually !! Amazingness!! #LearnLAP#pullenpride
A7: making sketchnoting such a comfortable practice that Ss embrace it on their own! I've had Ts text me pics of Ss "taking notes" that way w/o being told to. Way cool! #Learnlap
I thoroughly enjoyed the chat on sketchnoting. I learned so much. I love this strategy. Thanks for the new connections! I want to learn more!!! #learnlap
It unifies our: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. It improves comprehension, retention and recall. It also calms us and makes us happy... Power To The Doodle, Yo!!! https://t.co/IKqEXpZUoz#LearnLAP
Getting started can be the hardest part....Pick one task or one activity to add sketchnoting to, bring into your classroom and then build on that experience https://t.co/5DAv3j4yaI#LearnLAP
Getting started with sketchnoting can come in all shapes, sizes and types of activities. My daughters and I LOVE creating a monthly #ideaFlood for teachers, students and families to join in and sketchnote with us! https://t.co/DokARaS7pc#LearnLAP
A7: Inspired by @gfletchy and his progression videos, I might get some rolls of butcher paper and have teams #sketchnote the progression of our current math or science unit as review. #LearnLAP

I believe in sketchnoting. I think it helps Ss retain and synthesize information in a fun, different way. I just don’t want to scare the non-artists (like me) from trying! #LearnLAP

A7: So many great ideas from tonight's chat! I'm playing with something now to incorporate tomorrow! Thank you so much for moderating @HeckAwesome & @teresagros625#learnlap

You know your kiddos. The thing about sketchnotes is the connections and images they create. Just get your feet wet, and see what happens. What's the worst that can happen? We reteach! #LearnLAP
A6 VISUAL are so easy to find using tech. The @nounproject is excellent resource for visualizing concepts. Shapes in #googledrawings can be made into images to go with text! 💥 #LearnLAP
Tremendous appreciation goes out to @teresagross625 & @HeckAwesome for moderating a powerful #LearnLAP chat tonight!
Please join us next week (2/5/18 at 7pm Central) as @NowakRo moderates: "Transforming Student Learning Experiences!"
For now, jump over to #tlap w/ @AnnickRauch!
A5 my classes have used sketchnotes a few years & my kids made this video for @mospillman sketchnote flipgrid today. Kids explain it the best. Sketchnoting helps kids focus, engage in and learn about a topic / #learnLAP
That means so much! I frequently use #sketchnotes as side quests also. My favorite has been issuing @HeckAwesome#ideaFlood as temporary side quests. It's a great way to learn more about the Ss too. #LearnLAP
A7: Trying to apply it to an AP class might be challenging, but I'm interested in learning more to see if it could help enhance comprehension and synthesis! #learnlap
