#ProsperISD chat open to all in and out of district teachers discussing best practices and working with students K-12. It will occur on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00pm CST.
First time participating in a Twitter chat? no problem. Put an A and the # in front of your answer to each question. And don't forget to include #Prosper4ward in your tweets! Q1 coming in 2 minutes!
This is the PHS English Department, through @JanuaryRowe! We have several teachers tonight who "pre-tweeted" and sent in their responses to the questions which I'll be posting for them!
#Prosper4ward
A1: I create a reading culture by engaging students in reading by having them not only read historical texts but gain more background history. Meaning that we try to find out what the author means and why they might say things in a certain way. #Prosper4ward
A1: As a sci & ss T I made sure we were reading & writing in all content areas. Reading doesn't stop at the door of the ELAR room. Nonfiction text in sci/ss is HUGE when it comes to developing reading skills. Integrated skills taught in ELAR in my classes as well. #Prosper4ward
A1: Share the love! I always made a point to express my love and joy of reading, as well as celebrating my students when they shared theirs. I also found ways to tie it into their likes, lives, and current trends #Prosper4ward
@PISDEdtech Q1 - One important way to cultivate a culture of readers is to be a reader yourself! I would read with my students when they read in class. It was relaxing and helped me be a reading role model to them! #Prosper4Ward#PISDLibrary#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: I'm always striving to carve out more time to read. (SSR!) Books, books, books, and more books. Modeling, modeling, modeling, and more modeling. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: We make a point to talk about our reading through “What are You Reading?” This allows Ss to share their reading and recommend it to others. This has built and exciting culture that has encouraged even the most reluctant to read. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1 I lead my example. During independent reading, I used to read alongside my students. Reading is such a joy in my life, and I wanted to model it for my students. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1 When I taught theatre, we read a lot of dramatic literature, scenes from plays, etc. Of course a play is meant to be seen not read, but I always felt that letting kids choose what plays they read and discussed was the key. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDLibrary
Q1: It’s all about inspiring the kids to find books they love. Creating a culture that they feel safe in to enjoy reading. I like to model reading with my class when they read as well. Show them I read too! Positive vibes= desire to read. #Prosper4Ward#balancedliteracy
A1 - I think it's so important to give students time to read self-selected books independently. If we do this, we will see a change in their reading attitude, stamina and ability improve dramatically. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDEdtech#transformprosper
A1 BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS!! I loving giving students lots of options and tons of books to choose from. Plus all the read alouds! Kids love to be read to. #prosper4ward
A1: Read, read, read! Talk about reading, write about reading, let students tell each other about the great books they're reading. Pull my Kindle out of my purse to show that I've ALWAYS got something to read. Give students TIME to just read! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: The stage is set from the very beginning of what reading looks like and sounds like. The students are allowed to move about in the room, find a special spot, and engage in their self-selected literature without distraction. #Prosper4ward
A1: As a former Geography teacher, I really tried to find reading passages that not only aligned to my TEKS, but helped make what Ss were learning relevant to them. It is important to show that reading is part of every subject! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: Even though I'm a social studies teacher, I still have a classroom library where we explore nonfiction text together. I love hearing what they are doing in ELAR and seeing how I can incorporate that in our learning community.
#Prosper4ward
I encourage reading by allowing them to have time each day to read independently, discussions during read aloud, and trying to bring in literature in other subjects that tie into our lessons as much as possible. #Prosper4ward
We did this as a staff at one campus where I worked. I always made sure to read a comic book or graphic novel so that kids would know that comics are REAL literature too! #Prosper4ward
A1 I lead my example. During independent reading, I used to read alongside my students. Reading is such a joy in my life, and I wanted to model it for my students. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
LOVE this! Students appreciate teachers making connections from what they are learning in class to the outside world. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: I create a culture that values reading in my classroom because I am a reader and I talk about what I read. We read a picture book every day, as well as a read aloud that is a chapter book we vote on. I talk about reading in all subjects all the time. #Prosper4ward
A1: I love how @Jodi_L_Strain has candids of her students reading on her hallway bulletin. It shows that reading has a place of honor. @DelaineUlmer had teachers hang a "What I'm Reading" sign and put a picture of the book they're reading. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: I try to help the kids use strategies as they read science questions on tests etc in class. And incorporating writing as much as possible #Prosper4ward
A1 @ProsperRogersMS most teachers have their current reading selection posted by the door. I love checking out what everyone is delving into. #prosper4ward
A1: By building relationships with other Ts; You can create lessons that align with what is being read in ELAR, studied in S.S., etc. with your content area. @mskopeck and I are known for some crossover lessons between math and novel studies. #prosper4ward
A1: My students know how much I love reading because I am very verbal about my favorite books. In addition to read to self we do at least one read aloud every day. After reading, I love asking you students what they think about the book or what comes to their mind #Prosper4ward
A1 We read daily- read alouds, silent reading, shared reading. We celebrate our successes in reading, and we work hard to find current, interesting, and culturally inclusive literature to read. #prosper4ward
A1- I share me love of reading daily. Read aloud time is my favorite time of the day. I usually read them chapter books, but we’ve really been enjoying the 2X2 books @Calhoun_RE shared with us #Prosper4ward
A1 @ProsperRogersMS most teachers have their current reading selection posted by the door. I love checking out what everyone is delving into. #prosper4ward
A1: create a culture of reading by reading TO your kids every day. These 5th graders hung on to every single word this incredible teacher read. ❤️ #Prosper4ward
A1: I think giving students choice is key. Choice in text and choice in where to read have helped create a classroom of students who love to read. #prosper4ward
Q3: One way to give students at a any level could be the @MackinVIA databases. So many of our online resources are differentiated and many offer the option for students to listen to the material. Woot woot! #PISDLibrary#Prosper4Ward#PISDEdtech@CockrellChamps
In reply to
@edtechPhillips, @PISDEdtech, @MrsFletesReads, @TriciaMyrie, @jetteachestech, @MandyatSchool, @mlmaple, @psoneil, @Whitney_Agee, @rlmiller137, @NJSmithEDU, @MackinVIA, @CockrellChamps
A1 By showing interest in the books my students are carrying to class. I ask them to summarize what they've read, as well as if they would recommend it to others. I had a student read 5 books of a series over the break. He was excited to update me when we got back! #prosper4ward
That's awesome! I have found that kids want to know that we care. Asking about their books helps build a culture of reading AND build relationships! #Prosper4ward
Simply asking your students about what they are reading makes such a huge difference! It build relationships and encourages reading! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1 The BEST way? Make sure that your students have: 1) time to read IN CLASS, 2) comfortable reading environment, 3) a wealth of high interest books to choose from and they will read voraciously! #NancieAtwell#TheReadingZone#Prosper4ward
A1: create a culture of reading by reading TO your kids every day. These 5th graders hung on to every single word this incredible teacher read. ❤️ #Prosper4ward
A2: I think that more PLCs should engage students with writing reflections about their work and the events in class. I have the students grade their own papers, and tell me their takeaways after assignments. #Prosper4ward
A1: I show my kids how passionate I am about books. They can take us ANYWHERE! I tell them on day one that whenever I read, I want them to jump in the story with me until the VERY end. This is the quietest bunch I’ve had yet listening to a story! Passion is key #prosper4ward
A2: Ts can collaborate to generate ideas that promote writing across content. Understanding the standards of all content areas, allows Ts to develop appropriate prompts that encompass multiple standards & allow Ss to demonstrate understanding of any content area. #Prosper4ward
A2: PLC has enabled us to truly backwards plan to develop ideas for writing across the curriculum, and collaborate across all content areas. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
Student reflections are a great way for students to assess themselves AND incorporates writing into every content area! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: Talk about it. Make it a priority and find a spot in your lesson plans to always incorporate. Add a "Writing Component" section to your templates under each subject to keep it in mind at all times #Prosper4Ward
A1) I try to show the children all the different books I like to read. I always start my year reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret. They love this autobiography and gets them excited to find other books like it. #Prosper4ward
A1 I made sure they had access to books. We also talked about books we were reading. II made sure all students could find themselves in a book. #Prosper4ward
A1: sometimes I need to remind myself to keep it simple. Let the students choose a book and give them a comfortable place to read!!!#prosper4ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A2: it helps to show us “non” ELAR teachers what reading strategies they are using in class and what writing expectations they have so we can hold the kids to them in our class as well. #Prosper4ward
A2: Being strategic about where to put writing in the lesson plans has a big impact. I found that my kids were most focused after SSR, so we do some daily writing right after that. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: Writing is SO EASY to incorporate in all subjects! Try an online discussion for a warm up, a quick write for an exit ticket, or an explain your answer as a formative assessment. SO MANY OPTIONS! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2 I am very interested in reading everyone's response to this. I was no longer a classroom teacher when we began true PLCs in Prosper, and I am envious of the collaboration in teaching literacy. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDLibrary
A2 Having those conversations about how we can embed writing naturally is key. Also, getting the students having conversations first sets them up to be able to write about it later! Loud is good! 🤪 #prosper4ward
A2: teams need to devote time to planning content areas together every so often so that they can plan writing across content meaningfully #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2 - Teachers are having awesome collaborative conversations about intentionally incorporating writing into each subject. They are including WAC in their planning documents to ensure this planning is taking place. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDEdtech#transformprosper
A2 If kiddos can write about a skill or topic, they really truly understand it. I've heard @Boyer_Elem_PISD Ts talk about creative science prompts that demonstrate understanding like a narrative told from the perspective of a raindrop! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
@PISDEdtech Q4: Independent rdng is essential! I can’t express how important it is to give your students the gift of independent rdng! The more opportunities Rdrs have to rd the more chances they will have to become lifelong Rdrs! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDLibrary
A2. I think PLCs are such a great avenue to have discussions and dedicate time to plan cross-curricular for literacy skills. Work to find ways to incorporate reading and writing strategies across all subjects in PLC is such a wise use of time. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: PLCs need to find ways to celebrate writing. #Room409 does quick-writes all the time. Modeling the writing process and showing students pieces of good writing/mentor sentences is beneficial. #Prosper4ward
#Prosper4ward A1) By allowing student choice and modelling the value and *process* of reading myself. When students consciously understand the reasons for directives, your reasons become their reasons. Like all things educational, It’s all about buy-in.
A2: PLCs can promote writing across the content areas by PLANNING and COLLABORATING. There is power when students understand they are held accountable in all classrooms for the art of writing. There is also power when teachers collaborate to make it happen. #Prosper4ward
A1: I create a culture that values reading by leading my littles by example. Reading isn't just done during ELAR, it's an all day occurance in our class. 📚 #Prosper4ward
A2 Collaborate with Ts to streamline the writing process as much as possible. I use the RACE acronym for short answer responses with slight modifications for math content. This allows Ss to improve on the skill and see how writing relates across the curriculum #prosper4ward
A1) By allowing student choice and modelling the value and *process* of reading myself. When students consciously understand the reasons for directives, your reasons become their reasons. Like all things educational, It’s all about buy-in.
#Prosper4ward
A2: Make writing a priority that comes up every time your PLC meets. Look for new ways to encourage student writing in every content area. Come up with ways to teach students how writing is different across the content areas. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: Through modeling and choice! I LOVE to read and I want to instill that love in my kids as well! By sharing books I love as well as letting them choose books they love, reading time becomes something we all look forward to! #prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
We are trying to talk about it and integrating a common rubric to all subjects. The biggest thing is sharing how writing can benefit every subject so that the buy in is there. We are starting with going heavy DBQ partnership with SS and ELAR. #Prosper4ward
Yes!! Connecting w/ kids over books helps to establish those relationships we are all seeking! As a parent, I love hearing about this from my kiddo!😉❤️#prosper4ward
Simply asking your students about what they are reading makes such a huge difference! It build relationships and encourages reading! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: @Spradley_El teachers share writing expectations with Math, Science, and SS teachers to hold students accountable for quality content area writing! They even hang anchor charts in each room. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: Quote heard at Barnes and . Noble by author, Kevin Henkes..."The best way to learn to write is to read." So...working together to build a culture of reading is a step in the right direction. #prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2) Ask students to elaborate on any answer and give the thinking behind their first response - you’ll get a short answer essay every time. Students actually like explaining their thinking if you give them the chance. #Prosper4ward
A2: PLCs can intentionally plan writing throughout the subjects! It’s easy to incorporate if you are thinking about it when planning. #prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: Letting students know that you CARE about the choices they are making in the library encourages them to step out of their “book choice” comfort zone. #prosper4ward
A1: I look for books that connect to my students in all areas. I love to read books about things that they are interested in and that connect to their culture! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
Q2: I appreciate how everyone brings ideas to the table of that how to write in all subject areas and we have the freedom to do what works best for our students!
#prosper4ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A2 - at Reynolds we have incorporated writing into our warm up. Every. Day. Writing in the math class is vital to student learning/success #prosper4ward#WeAreReynolds
PLC's can promote cross-curricular writing by being intentional in planning for it when backwards planning. Creating sentence stems together, higher order thinking questions, and group work like "write Round Robin" #Kaganstructuresrock promote writing all day. #prosper4ward
A2: cross curricular planning and discussions about writing in all content areas. Writing is a part of everything! Writing rubric and expectations discussed across the content areas #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2 It can be as simple as having a day during which the entire English department takes a pause and ALL of the students bring in the writing that they have done in OTHER curriculum areas to share, revise, edit, and then publish.
#Prosper4ward
A2: Really focusing on getting them to explain their thinking whether it’s a reading response, math justification, or a Science reflection. Sentence stems are a great start and easy to implement across all content areas! #Prosper4ward
A1: Be intentional about how we talk about reading. "I get to read this!" > "I have to read this". Leave space in the day for Ss to talk to each other about what they read. Get really excited about cool facts or a neat new word in a read aloud. #PISDBalancedLiteracy#Prosper4ward
A2: PLCs can help teams have the right conversations and think of curriculum in new ways that promote writing and deep understanding! Writing reflects our thinking in a variety of ways and can benefit ALL learners! #prosper4ward
q2- I feel that PLC's help create meaningful writing prompts. It's also holds you accountable. It gives kids a time to write about their learning and thinking. #prosper4ward#PISDbalancedliteracy
On THIS EXACT NOTE my son wants me to come and read the paper he just wrote on "How to Play Fortnite!" So I have to step away for a hot minute!
#Prosper4ward
A1. I have brought out my own books to show students how I independently read, also! Kids get amazed seeing us in action! Becomes contagious! #prosper4ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A2. During PLC teachers can devote time to be intentional about incorporating writing across all subject areas. This can allow for more meaningful writing prompts! #Prosper4ward
A2: I have started Paragraph of the Week in social studies this year. We look at what a strong paragraph looks like, practice writing hooks, etc. I sit down at a desk and write with them. #Prosper4ward
A2- Every Monday, my students have sticky notes on their desks. They read the EQ’s for the week, and respond to one. Then on Friday, they add to their thinking. They call this their “metacognitive thinking time”. I love reading how their thinking has grown. #Prosper4ward
Q2: Everyone comes with different experiences. I appreciate how everyone brings ideas to the table of how we can write in all subject areas. Then we have the ability to choose how that looks like or works for our students!
#prosper4ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A2: PLC can help promote writing across content areas by making sure all teachers, regardless of experience, can collaboratively come up with writing ideas that will meet the rigor needed to challenge our students. #Prosper4ward
A1: Letting students know that you CARE about the choices they are making in the library encourages them to step out of their “book choice” comfort zone. #prosper4ward
Q3 How do you provide access to content at grade level when you have students that struggle to read and understand grade level text? #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
Yes!!!!! Sentence stems are LIFE and I honestly believe they can be utilized at all levels and subjects - sometimes kids need a roadmap to Start their journey #prosper4ward
A3: Elementary now have access to @NewsELA! It’s a great resource that allows Ss to get age appropriate content at their level. The article will look the same for all Ss, but will be leveled appropriately. It also has good questions to check for understanding. #Prosper4ward
A3: I like to incorporate short videos that students understand content. I also try to find other sources for information at a lower reading level for them. #Prosper4ward
A3: @Newsela, DogoNews, and Britannica are great resources for struggling readers! All 3 will read the article to the student AND allow you to level the article. You can level up or down accordingly but all Ss read the same article. Brilliant! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3: Accommodate! Activate prior knowledge, do a vocab walk ahead of time, provide audio when necessary, include text features that can help break down text, just think of it with a YET mindset...they don't have it YET, how can I help them get there? Be flexible #Prosper4ward
A2: I am new to PLC's and I love it! I love the time with the team to share ideas. Everyone tries to incorporate writing in some way or another! Exit tickets, reflections, journals, letters to the teacher are all great ways to incorporate writing in all subjects. #Prosper4ward
A3 - I think that small group is the most important place for reading instruction. We can really target our student's individual needs, while at the same time supporting them with on-level content. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDEdtech#TransformProsper
Yes!!!! We did this last year and the kids took the essay back and forth between the two subjects and it really drove home the idea that solid grammar and solid expository structure are expected everywhere #prosper4ward
A3: We use NewsELA a lot in social studies which can level the reading for our kids. I am a huge fan of guided reading and breaking down the text together. #Prosper4ward
A3: I love tackling a tough concept with an approachable text. (Teaching theme with the book Scaredy Squirrel is my favorite!) The texts can get harder as students build their confidence. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
With my students, I help them at my teacher table with mini lessons, I also provide activities where students can partner up to work together, and I even have some of my students be experts and assist students who need help. #Prosper4ward
A3 A great thing about theatre was that even if Ss struggled with grade level dramatic literature, they still heard/saw it performed. This was a positive side-effect of the subject though. Could this be translated to core classes? #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDLibrary
A2- Every Monday, my students have sticky notes on their desks. They read the EQ’s for the week, and respond to one. Then on Friday, they add to their thinking. They call this their “metacognitive thinking time”. I love reading how their thinking has grown. #Prosper4ward
A3 @Newsela! Check it out as a great leveled resource to support reading comprehension with high interest nonfiction articles! Permission slip is needed for kiddos under 13, check my email for details. :) #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: Get buy-in from the PLC. Help them see the value of written output for true comprehension. A student’s individual thought process comes through in written expression, and it gives the teacher invaluable insight into his/her thought process! #Prosper4Ward
A1 It is important to show that even if you struggle with decoding, you can be a good reader. I struggled with decoding the words, but if I heard a story I could understand it. However I didn’t consider that reading so I didn’t see myself as a reader. #Prosper4ward
The PD on DBQs earlier this week showed how powerful this corssover is. Great opportunities for Ss to really talk about reading! #prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: Provide large classroom library, set aside reading time every day & have “comfy spots” to read in. We also get excited about Library Day and tell each other about the books we’re reading. #Prosper4ward
A3:Pulling strategy/guided reading groups helps give students access to grade level content, while focusing on their individual reading levels. Another way is by facilitating their learning during group, partner, or individual work to provide immediate intervention. #Prosper4ward
A3: Accomodate & intervene. Get kids some books they like even though they are below grade level. Reading is best practice for reading. @Newsela@CommonLit@ReadTheory have great ways to level it for kids so they can read the same thing where they are currently #Prosper4ward
Q3 How do you provide access to content at grade level when you have students that struggle to read and understand grade level text? #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3: Tech allows me to create differentiated tasks for Ss that makes content more accessible. Important vocab/concepts can be hyperlinked to tutorial videos, which allows Ss the flexibility to jump back and forth between information as needed. #prosper4ward
A1: Create a culture that values reading my making it accessible to ALL learners! Adapted books support language and communication development! Check out the possibilities: https://t.co/TjGRHCry4g#prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3: @DelaineUlmer has done an awesome job with our literacy library @FierceFolsom so that ALL my readers have books that are "good fits" for them in their book boxes and that they love. #Prosper4ward
A3: read alouds, guided reading texts, and small group instruction are great ways to expose the kiddos to grade level text without the pressure of having to read it themselves #Prosper4ward
A3 Record shorter passages being read aloud (student volunteers??) so struggling readers can hear and read along. @Screencastify is great for this. #Prosper4ward
A3: Technology can be a game changer for this! There are so many ways for kids to access books at their level digitally. Plus guided reading is where you can meet kids at their level in a book, but work on grade level skills! #Prosper4ward
A3 - repetition and differentiation. We use a variety of teaching strategies during whole group to accommodate the learning styles and needs of students and utilize small groups to increase exposure of grade level material in a even more focused way #prosper4ward
A2: One of the main ideas behind a PLC is collaboration. If teachers truly take the time to work together and see where subjects align, they can integrate writing opportunities throughout all content areas. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A1: What don't I do?! We book talk EVERYDAY, huge classroom library, self-selected reading EVERYDAY, we share books with each other EVERYDAY, we read and study high-interest texts. #Prosper4ward Reading is my passion!
A3: Through PLC’s and grade level planning we are able to collaborate to gain more access with UFDs. I have found guided reading also is great access for kiddos who are struggling. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
Yes!!!! And everyone has this amazing extension feel free to reach out to your librarian or instructional technology coach (Instructional Technology Coach) for help! #prosper4ward
A3 Record shorter passages being read aloud (student volunteers??) so struggling readers can hear and read along. @Screencastify is great for this. #Prosper4ward
A3: Preteach unknown vocabulary, talk about their schema, walk with them through the text, be patient and positive! Also remember that it's okay to let them struggle a little bit #prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
I curate a lot of different science sites that speak to content at different levels so students can choose the source that suits them best. We also talk about how to search for sources that fit you, and when to move on. #Prosper4ward
A3: Real loud and model for the students what looks like to think about the book while you are reading. Give them exposure!! They follow what you do. Be the example! #prosper4ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A2: When planning, ask how we can add a writing and/or reflection component, or a quick write and share with your neighbor. We did a book study on "Content Area Writing" by @smokeylit that helped us learn more ways to get that writing is thinking mindset in our PLCs #Prosper4ward
A2: Teaching writing is no joke. It takes a village (or just a super awesome team😁) to share and refine strategies, align writing expectations, and create meaningful writing experiences for kids. I see it happening every day! #PISDBalancedLiteracy#Prosper4ward
A3: Prep students with background info before they use the grade level text. Keep pushing students back into the text for different reasons and in different formats- with a peer search a text for 5 words/phrases that express important ideas, shared reading #Prosper4ward
A3: I provide content at grade level to my struggling readers with the use of technology and small group instruction. I create record videos for my struggling readers to allow them to use as needed and to help them feel more independent. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3) Either by modifying the text like @newsELA does, or by high interest content as mentioned here: https://t.co/cCFEoTGZ0C Buy-in again! If the student cares, they can reach far higher.
#Prosper4ward
A3: I use buddy reading for kiddos who need to be read to! Helps build their confidence by not always working with me and works on fluency with the other student! And I try to find different levels of texts. #Prosper4ward
A3: Basic math facts hold students back. Instead of times tables and flash cards we play games centered around facts. The buy-in is high and meets learners needs so that they can access grade level material such as Order of Ops #Prosper4ward
A3: Know your students well where they are within reading so that they know where they are growing to. Using the Success Criteria as a springboard for personal goal setting helps kids know where they are, know where they're going, and celebrate successes. #prosper4ward
A3- confession time- my name is Jennifer Wattenbarger, and I am addicted to buying books for my classroom library at ALL levels. We also use all of the great online resources provided by the district. A student favorite is always PebbleGo. #Prosper4ward
A3 In co-teach classes this year, @Fitzn2chat and I are test driving the concept of choosing the most rich passages from a large text & having our struggling readers focus in on our essential standards from those specific passages. Quality vs Quantity of reading.
#Prosper4ward
A3: Book Clubs have been awesome in my classroom to help all readers gain confidence in their reading and to encourage one another as a community of readers. #Prosper4ward
A4 Making time for independent reading definitely impacts students learning. Students make gains in comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and grow their desire to read. #Prosper4Ward
A2: Get buy-in from the PLC. Help them see the value of written output for true comprehension. A student’s individual thought process comes through in written expression, and it gives the teacher invaluable insight into his/her thought process! #Prosper4Ward
A4: Anytime a student has an opportunity to read, a positive outcome is eminent. Fostering a love for reading is huge! For me, school made me dislike reading thanks to district initiatives put in place. I had to find a love for reading as an adult! #Prosper4ward
A4.1 I'm not a librarian or ELAR teacher, but I think independent reading is THE KEY to student success. It teaches kids to enjoy reading, which makes them better deep readers when they read in all subjects. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#PISDLibrary
A4: YES! It fosters their independent love of reading. It allows them CHOICE and VOICE in what they are reading. It allows them to explore and find their own niche. It gives you another avenue of finding connections...IT IS IMPORTANT #Prosper4ward
A4: YES! It helps them to build stamina, become a well rounded reader, builds confidence, sparks literacy conversations...I could go on forever! A good amount of DAILY independent reading is so valuable for our readers. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: 100% YES! When kids are given the chance to explore through reading, that's when learning really starts to become FUN - not just for them but for me as their teacher! That's when the best questions are asked! #Prosper4ward
A4: Absolutely! This gives students the time to implement the skills they are learning in class and guided reading! They apply, and develop their love of reading! Not to mention it builds their fluency and stamina! #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: YES YES YES! I see it every year, esp when I worked in low-income, Title 1 schools, but I still see impact here. My kids leave either loving reading or at least respecting the outcome of it. @RMSCoachCole can also attest! #Prosper4ward
A4-Independent reading allows students the opportunity to find texts they love and helps build their confidence. This will help students assume more ownership in their learning and discover a passion for reading. #Prosper4Ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy#TransformProsper#PISDEdtech
A4 Yes! When students are allowed time to dive into a book of their choice, they learn and grow because the interest is there. Building passion for reading, developing comprehension skills, falling into a story... yes to it all! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3: Shared reading allows my students to have a predictable text that they can read independently and practice specific strategies. Read alouds allow me to model those strategies for them and guided reading allows me to work with them on their specific level!! #Prosper4Ward
A3: I love the idea of using the librarian. Our library has so many resources that teachers of all grade levels can use. I love using NewsELA and the readthinkwrite website. #Prosper4ward
A4: I feel it has a impact on their performance and the love for reading. They are building their reading stamina, they are building up background knowledge, and students are excited to share what they are reading to me. #Prosper4ward
A4: YES. Independent reading time is so important for readers. I always tell my students “How do you get better at reading? By READING!” We have to give them the time and space to just read. Plus having books that interest them is key too! #pisdbalancedliteracy#Prosper4ward
A4 Of course!!! If you want to build skills and stamina, you have to practice, practice, practice. I tell my students if I want to get healthy, I can’t just sit in the gym. We have to exercise those reading muscles. I need to get to the gym. 😝#prosper4ward
Can you imagine if we always had to collaborate and never had time to think for ourselves as professionals? Allowing a child independence opens doors to creativity, self-reflection, and a pace in which they can thrive. #Prosper4ward
A4: Yes! Ss get excited about reading when they get to choose what to read. They get to develop stamina and do some real-world practice of all of the skills/strategies we've been teaching. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A3. Using guided reading groups to front load or reteach. Finding ways to collaborate and have higher level readers lead their groups. Screencastify or co-writer type systems to read text aloud to them is always useful. #Prosper4Ward#balancedliteracy
A4 We don't want to admit it, but students just don't read classic texts at home anymore. But they WILL read a YA novel at home... which means they are READING... which means they can discuss their reading... which means they can write about their reading. #winning#Prosper4ward
A4: Independent reading definitely impacts student performance. The more they read, the more knowledgeable they become in vocabulary and comprehension. This allows teachers to focus on the critical thinking components and take their learning to a deeper level. #Prosper4ward
A4: YES! I used to love to read, until I lost my choice in WHAT I was reading. Independent reading allows students to maintain CHOICE in what they read and that is priceless! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: YES!! When they read daily they grow to love it, when they love it they want to do it, when they want to do it they will work hard, and we will see growth! It’s a win for everyone! #Prosper4Ward#pisdbalancedliteracy
A4 - YES! Even in Kinder with our students who are “prereading”...they have the opportunity to explore books at their own pace. Picture reading, looking for familiar letters/words, and just enjoying the time with their books 💚#prosper4ward
A4: without a doubt when Ss independent read to accomplish a task and then develop their own individual thoughts to bring into collaboration the best ideas are formed. #Prosper4ward
A4: I try to soak up every minute during math instructional time! But I’ve been trying to find ways to engage students in reading about math and how it applies to their real world! Even letting kids read responses to other students writing about math concepts! #prosper4ward
A4: When Ss engage in ind. reading, they are taking charge of their own learning experience; they will run into challenges through their reading, but they persevere and learn as an outcome; that is the ultimate goal in any classroom, isn’t it? #prosper4ward
The year I taught ELAR, I had to grit my teeth when the kids picked the umpteenth Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, but they were still READING. #Prosper4ward
A4: Letting students read independently helps them engage with the content more. It also empowers them to answer their questions about the text by themselves. #Prosper4ward
A4: Making time for independent reading positively impacts my class by fostering the love and importance of reading. It also helps with getting students to reflect and respond to text using writing. #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: Independent reading increases stamina across all contents, gives students something to look forward to and gives them a voracious appetite to keep reading at home. The extra access to vocabulary increases their academic and life performance. #lifelongreaders#prosper4ward
A4: Heard just morning from a ELAR teacher who allowed 15 minutes at the beginning of every class for reading. She reported the interest in reading and following discussion was so profound she regretted not doing it sooner. #readersareleaders#prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A2: Writing is a path to critical thinking. S will be asked to solve prob, analyze info, think critically, and communicate effectively so writing needs to be taught and practiced across the curriculum. PLC's is where we plan how to do that. #Prosper4ward#PISDEdtech
A4 - YES! Even in Kinder with our students who are “prereading”...they have the opportunity to explore books at their own pace. Picture reading, looking for familiar letters/words, and just enjoying the time with their books 💚#prosper4ward
A4. Absolutely! Build stamina and continues to increase fluency. I’ve also seen comprehension increase when you have book talks using their independent reading books bc they are forced to process/analyze their text. #PISDBalancedLiteracy#Prosper4Ward
A4b The only way to get our high school kids reading again... is to read independently IN THE CLASSROOM. They don't have time or they won't make time at home (at first) so we HAVE to provide it for them.
#Prosper4ward
A4 We don't want to admit it, but students just don't read classic texts at home anymore. But they WILL read a YA novel at home... which means they are READING... which means they can discuss their reading... which means they can write about their reading. #winning#Prosper4ward
Q4: Independent Reading affects their vocabulary, spelling, creative thought, etc. Although not testable in traditional settings, it totally affects the students positively, 100% of the time. #prosper4ward
A4: Yes!!! I love the fact that independent reading time is so essential here in Prosper. I used to feel bad letting kids have time to just read (like I was waisting instructional time). My students are sharing so much with me as they read! #Prosper4ward
A4) So, I’ll leave this bit by the Book Whisperer here... https://t.co/2AJoitOT9L ... but even beyond that, IR lets them engage with reading/reading skills on their own terms and also teaches me something about my students. #Prosper4ward
A4: Quote from author, Kate DiCamillo "The best way for children to treasure reading is to see the adults in their lives reading for their own pleasure."
#Prosper4ward@PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: That motivation though. When students independently read with choice, they learn to love reading. When they learn to love reading, they learn to love learning. #PISDBalancedLiteracy#Prosper4ward
Oh me too... BUT I was already a reader. We had "pre-bed reading" every single night of my life, so reading Jane Eyre wasn't a big deal. If kids don't already have a habit of reading, then dumping a classic on them certainly isn't going to make them suddenly read. #Prosper4ward
I get that. Maybe that's something you can get with your librarian about. Finding books on/about/subject of math that makes it fun to read! #Prosper4ward
A3: Book clubs are a great way to make this happen. Giving students ownership by providing specific jobs in their group is key. The thinking and conversations that come from book clubs can be mind blowing....at any reading level. #prosper4ward@FierceFolsom
THANK YOU to everyone for a great chat! SUPER EXTRA THANKS to my @hugheselem@Spradley_El and @RuckerRocks people who participated in the whole chat! Special surprises coming your way! #Prosper4ward
A2: PLC’s can promote writing across content areas by diving into student strengths and writing preferences. PLC’s should evaluate students’ writing across multiple content areas and determine where they excel and why. We must build on their strengths! #prosper4ward
A4: independence! Life skill! It puts the child in charge of their learning and teaches them to hold themselves accountable in their learning, no matter the subject! We can’t read FOR them but we can teach them HOW. #Prosper4ward
And this why my Ss KNOW that Kate DiCamillo is my favorite children's book author! It sparks their interest in her books, too! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4: It allows Ss to choose what they want to read and builds vocabulary, fluency & stamina. It also gives them a few minutes to do something relaxing in the middle of their hectic day. #prosper4ward
A4: YES! Sustained reading instills focus and a calmer mindset. I have seen my students grow so much in their abilities to stick to a task as well as going through something over and over to make sure they have seen each and every detail! #Prosper4ward#PISDBalancedLiteracy
A4. Kinders, who are just beginning to read, need the time to practice, time to build stamina...reading then quickly becomes a joyful habit #Prosper4ward
A4: my students know that they should be responding in writing during independent reading. Nothing better than seeing a student respond in the MIDDLE of independent reading time. It shows they are thinking while they read. #prosper4ward@FierceFolsom
A3: Elementary now have access to @NewsELA! It’s a great resource that allows Ss to get age appropriate content at their level. The article will look the same for all Ss, but will be leveled appropriately. It also has good questions to check for understanding. #Prosper4ward
Q1: share, share, share!!! It’s crazy connections that are made and interests that are built when they talk about reading with one another! Makes me really value the share time!! #PISDBalancedLiteracy#prosper4ward
