A1: It's a small world. Folks must be able to work with folks who come from different cultures, backgrounds, and countries than themselves. This is a good thing because diversity is such a strength! #GlobalEdChat
A1: The job market is changing rapidly. As more routine jobs can be outsourced/done by computer, advantages will go to workers who can analyze and solve problems, recognize patterns and similarities, and communicate with other people in global work teams. #Globaledchat
A1) I think having a global perspective on those items should be included because it not only helps students to discover more of the world that exists outside of the classroom, but also presents them problems that they may never even have thought about. #globaledchat#osussmce
Q1: Because today’s workforce will be interacting with people from diverse backgrounds even if they aren’t located or traveling to a foreign country. #GlobalEdChat
A1: These programs ideally should be focused on solving the problems of our planet so they need to broaden the perspective of those in these fields. Check out this book if you have any doubts! #globaledchat
These fields are ever-changing in research and development. The best way to be teaching and learning the most accurate and up to date information is to be communicating, operating, and collaborating globally #GlobalEdChat
A1: ALL students in ALL fields (STEM, CTE, humanities, social sciences...) need global competencies like empathy, cross-cultural collaboration & more to succeed in 21st century academics & careers! Schools and businesses go beyond just one country/culture! #globaledchat#IEW2018
We live in the world of globalization. Where you may work, what you do, is effected and effects those throughout the world. Whether the work be environmental engineering or innovative social justice projects, why wouldn't you include a global perspective? #Globaledchat
A1: Culturally, technologically and economically, we are connected on a global scale. We should be sharing knowledge and skills between our countries so that we gain a broadened perspective. #globaledchat
A1: The world is getting smaller and technology continues to advance. I think establishing a global perspective can show people that we are more alike than different. #GlobalEdchat#ssvpln
A1: Expanding the walls of our classrooms and gaining additional perspectives allows us to understand each other in ways that closed classrooms can't. In a "flat" world that's critical. #globaledchat
A1. It used to be cliche to say that the world is getting smaller...however it is a reality. Global competencies are universal and transcend borders. #globaledchat
A1 It would be unwise not to equip students with these competencies and unkind of us not to prepare them with the social emotional skills that they will also need. #Globaledchat
A2: Because of the nature of these programs Ss will be exposed to connections across the world. Including global perspectives in instruction helps prepare students for that experience #GlobalEdChat
A1; wholeheartedly agree @GoGlobalED, we're teaching students for an unpredictable world & an economy that will continue to be disrupted in unanticipated ways. Global Ed = 21st Century Skill. (btw, 1st #GlobalEdChat, asst. dir. of global studies in Atlanta)
A1: ALL students in ALL fields (STEM, CTE, humanities, social sciences...) need global competencies like empathy, cross-cultural collaboration & more to succeed in 21st century academics & careers! Schools and businesses go beyond just one country/culture! #globaledchat#IEW2018
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat#IEW2018
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat#iew2018
A1 Global challenges require global perspectives. U.S. students will be working with global counterparts here to make renewable energy, solve food crises and cure diseases... #globaledchat
A1) Because we live in a global world. Because the more you incorporate from around the world, the more you're basing learning on sound information. #GlobalEdChat
A1) All students & educators need global competence, a global perspective, to communicate across culture and economies. We're in the 21st century, and an intercultural awareness of diversity and inclusion are important for our development, and programs #globaledchat
In other words, dealing with the human aspect of work and social relations that are mediated more and more by the computer or smartphone. #Globaledchat
A1: These are all disciplines where people need to understand the differences in today's world in order to succeed. Given today's technology, we are 100% global in almost everything we do. #globaledchat
A1: With social media expanding faster than ever, it is imperative that programs be in line with a global perspective. In order to grow with the ever expanding world, it must be engage our minds with a perspective that will help us succeed in this connected world. #GlobalEdChat
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat
A1. I think career, technical, and STEM programs should include a global perspective to provide SS w/ a broader scope of opportunities that will be available for their generation. Exposure is key. #GlobalEdChat
A2: Oregon is very much tied to the global economy, from trade to travel, we rely on our international connections. Students will need global skills for success in jobs. #globaledchat#IEW2018
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat#iew2018
@joann_hardy I really agree with your statement. Technology has changed everything and made the world smaller. Case in point: this Tweet Chat #globaledchat
#globaledchat#osussmce I feel that by getting a greater global competency in the future will bring a greater amount of empathy from our community to others. Too often it feels like people that are well off ask why they should help those in need of aid. Share the love!
A2: At the elementary ed level, global learning has influenced planning and instruction to develop students' abilities to communicate, collaborate, create, and think critically as 21st century learners. #globaledchat
And every state has a story like this! No matter where you are in the U.S., there are businesses working with counterparts across the world and there are communities of people hailing from all over the globe! #globaledchat#iew2018
A2: Oregon is very much tied to the global economy, from trade to travel, we rely on our international connections. Students will need global skills for success in jobs. #globaledchat#IEW2018
A2) #globaledchat#osussmce I feel that by getting a greater global competency in the future will bring a greater amount of empathy from our community to others. Too often it feels like people that are well off ask why they should help those in need of aid. Share the love!
We are seeing great success with our Global Classroom Project. Not only are students benefiting from global perspectives but the teachers are too! #globaledchat#FCPSGoGlobal
A2: I live in Columbus, Oh which is an increasingly more global city with a large immigrant population (yay!). Global skills would allow students to understand their fellow citizens in the city in which they live. #GlobalEdchat#ssvpln
A2. It's part of our school mission, but it's a clearly relevant aspect of preparing our students for the world of work they will enter post-college. ATL is a global city, & so many families at school are from other countries, I think they recognize that. #GlobalEdChat
A2 - It has stirred institutional debates as to what changes need to be made to curriculum and policies, in particular how to prepare teachers so they can truly help their students. #Globaledchat
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat#iew2018
Great point! And the earlier students start to learn and get practice with these skills, the easier they will be to use in their studies and careers down the road. It's never too early to start global learning! #globaledchat#IEW2018
A2. My students are being asked to appreciate perspectives and take action on their learning. These two skill sets will put them in the drivers seat to compete, collaborate, and contribute globally. #globaledchat
A2: My local community has gotten more diverse over the last decade. #GlobalCompetencies are important for working together to solve social issues like poverty and hunger. #GlobalEdChat
Q2. How have global competencies affected your students/community over the past decade? How will they affect your students/community in the future? #globaledchat
A2: My school has always had a large number of students from all over the world but now as an @iborganization school, we are perfectly positioned to amplify our students exposure to global competencies! #globaledchat
A2: Our interconnectedness via social media means that we are "seeing" issues on a broader scale rather than in our own microcosm. Our students want to work to solve these issues and should be prepared to discuss in universal terms. #globaledchat
Yes x 1000! Too often people forget that "global" doesn't have to mean abroad. We have plenty of "global" in our own communities here in the United States! #globaledchat#IEW2018
We are seeing great success with our Global Classroom Project. Not only are students benefiting from global perspectives but the teachers are too! #globaledchat#FCPSGoGlobal
A2: Some of our Global Classroom teachers are working towards developing empathy within their students. In FCPS we are working on providing access and opportunity for all students to develop Portrait of a Graduate skills as we look to the future. #globaledchat
We use the 4 domains of global competence from the Asia Society https://t.co/xskHZzleO2 to frame what we mean by teaching global skills. These are adaptable to any curriculum or grade level. #GlobalEdChat
A3: Project based learning promotes all of the global competencies - from recognizing the other perspectives of your team to taking action to address global and local issues. #globaledchat
I love this comment and how important for our students in rural areas, especially, who do not always have examples in their own communities of fields they would like to enter. #GlobalEdChat
So much I like about this tweet! Appreciation of others and then turning that into action. 2. Have our Ss in the drivers seat! 3. The natural balance of competition, collaboration and contribution! #globaledchat
A2. My students are being asked to appreciate perspectives and take action on their learning. These two skill sets will put them in the drivers seat to compete, collaborate, and contribute globally. #globaledchat
And issues like poverty and hunger happen in every country around the world. Big challenges face every nation and we need big thinkers with global skills to help solve them! #globaledchat
A3) By letting students know that the world is bigger than just their home country and that the actions that nations make in the world have consequences of both varying good and bad degrees felt across the world. This can help develop global competencies. #globaledchat#osussmce
We also have a Framework for Cultural and Global Competency that was developed in collaboration with many organizations, teachers, and schools working in the field: https://t.co/QMEVOFYlHA#globaledchat#IEW2018
Tx for asking. Foundational elements include our Portrait of a Graduate skills, content, and the Sustainable Development Goals. More info. on our website: https://t.co/h09tE9M6Gd. Scroll past 2 hour delayed opening tomorrow. #globaledchat
A3: I think the best way would be to teach students that nothing happens in isolation. Effects of an action are always going to be felt by many, and will often be felt abroad. #ssvpln#GlobalEdchat
A3: I think teaching with a global perspective that incorporates a lesson that acknowledges the whole global and the beautifully varying cultures and societies within it. A way to incorporate it with content can be teaching a lesson that looks at the whole picture. #globaledchat
Q2. Exposure plays a major role in SS having the tools & tapping into their potential to investigate the 🌎 to take broader action. Being @ an IB school cultivates the attitudes & principles I believe that will encourage the competencies. #Globaledchat
In year 2 of our Global Classroom project. Intentional planning of goals that are with a partner class or support a partner class. Ts and Ss are becoming aware of cultural similarities. We often say What do you wonder about....? #globaledchat
One of our #TitleVI Language Resource Centers in Hawaii works a lot on project based learning -- check out there resources (for everyone! not just teachers in Hawaii!) at their website here: https://t.co/DmIMlUATxK@NFLRC#globaledchat#IEW2018
Hello to #Globaledchat! A little late joining but my name is Andi Webb and I'm typically an elementary teacher in NC. But this year I am living and working in DC as an Einstein Fellow. @AEF_Program
Yes! And it's good to remember that rural students can experience global learning opportunities too without having to leave the classroom through virtual exchanges, etc. Today's technology allows students to be exposed to a whole world beyond their classroom! #globaledchat
Through the skills Ss develop, empathy is something that some of our teachers work on developing within their students. No POG skills is a direct tie in to empathy, but some teachers elect to intentionally teach skills of Global & Ethical Citizen. #globaledchat
A4: We've worked with @actecareertech to create a set of lessons to help students explore the global skills they will need for careers as well as a set of career profile videos w/people sharing the global nature of their careers: https://t.co/y1SBPZPja1#globaledchat#IEW2018
Speaking of language, even Peace Corps Volunteers use apps like DuoLingo to enhance language skills and communication across all boarders. #globaledchat
A3: Teachers can have a current event/article/form of media that discusses a present issue that the STEM/CTE educator is providing as a learning experience. Real world examples truly bridge & seal the meaningful component of a learning experience. #Globaledchat
A4) To be honest I can't think of much off the top of my head in my various placements. Though regardless of the topic I teach at my future school, I hope to bring attention to this by making some projects that allows students to research future careers #globaledchat#osussmce
I totally agree. The taking action piece is something we are working on. It's easy for our teachers to connect content and SDGs, but providing opportunities and choice for student action is a challenge. #globaledchat
Global & Ethical Citizen, not to mention "just" a well-rounded individual who can successfully navigate interpersonal relationships and society! #globaledchat
Educators can also be matched with communities abroad in real-time to do video exchanges, projects, and/or penpals! https://t.co/McLLnnTj5H#globaledchat
Ok. This conversation is reminding me of an NPR story I heard on the way home today, that higher education is struggling to keep more students in the humanities -- a natural way to build empathy. More are flocking to STEM for the job opportunities. What about both? #GlobalEdChat
Through the skills Ss develop, empathy is something that some of our teachers work on developing within their students. No POG skills is a direct tie in to empathy, but some teachers elect to intentionally teach skills of Global & Ethical Citizen. #globaledchat
A4: I'm in my first semester of student teaching still so I haven't done much yet, but I talk about current events with my AP Gov students everyday and they talk about wanting to travel the world. I won't be the one to discourage it! #ssvpln#GlobalEdchat
A4 - can't say they are direct career opportunities, but at least two of my postgraduate students have become professional language teachers and presented at international conferences bcuz of our digital literacy classes. #Globaledchat
A3. We are working a lot through our STEM/STEAM program. Many focus on science/sustainability options as they look at the Global competencies. #globaledchat
Tune in tomorrow to hear from Peace Corps Director Olsen and National Teacher of the Year for more on global education careers. https://t.co/i1dtc0RJwg#globaledchat
A4: When making connections to tasks in the classroom or attending field trips, I discuss career pathways that relate. I want to be more intentional about exposing my SS to the #globalmindedness of career pathways. It’ll take a little more research before a lesson. #Globaledchat
Yes! Too often the discussion is framed as either/or when it comes to STEM and the humanities. It can and should be BOTH! Same applies to CTE and other fields! #globaledchat
Our teachers are at very different places. There are some that still believe that, and that's where the challenge is. This is not taking the action that represents global citizenship. #globaledchat
A4: As a teacher I invited community members to my classroom to talk about careers - that's even easier today with virtual connections. Parents are a good starting place & Twitter and LinkedIn are great for connecting to career people you would like to spotlight #GlobalEdChat
Q5. In what ways do students benefit when their apprenticeship and internship experiences happen with diverse cultures and communities? #globaledchat#IEW2018
And the exposure begins with us in the classroom. When they see how we seek career development opportunities thru social media platforms like this one, they get the message loud and clear. #Globaledchat
This is great. Sometimes students need more explanation of how the content relates to what they will actually experience in the world and/or in their future careers. This helps them see that their school work will have tangible benefits down the road! #globaledchat
A5: Students are introduced to new ways of thinking and new ways of approaching problems. Diverse cultures and communities teach students new perspectives. #ssvpln#GlobalEdchat
A5: There may be no better way to learn career skills than through work-based learning. When students work within diverse communities they learn to recognize the perspectives of, and communicate with people from different backgrounds-critical for #global competence. #globaledchat
Skills we want students to have indirectly develop empathy. This link is to the attributes & skills. They are broken down even more by grade-level bands. https://t.co/bxpRdXd4At#globaledchat
There's an attempt to incorporate the humanities in STEM, which makes sense. There are human impacts on everything. Science is full of moral choices. #GlobalEdChat
A5: Anytime you get to interact with a community outside your own, learning and understanding takes place. Growth happens when you work in your challenge zone. #globaledchat
A5: It helps bridge gaps & begin the removal of barriers that are present due to lack of exposure to other cultures. It builds social awareness. It reminds SS of how differences may seem blaring, but similarities are ever present. #globaledchat
It's important to connect students across cultures and worlds, but even more so how their small efforts make a difference. Give real life examples, and create value for their experience! #globaledchat
Yes! And pretty soon, the challenge zone becomes your comfort zone and then you can keep expanding outward! More skills, more comfort with more types of people = more career opportunities. #globaledchat
A5: Our district has identified culturally responsive teaching in our strategic plan. Not only recognizing, but responding to diverse cultures and communities is important in our classrooms to make all of our students feel valued. #globaledchat
A5: Our eyes are opened to new ideas and we are challenged to think differently. We grow and progress. Interacting with diverse cultures is always a positive. #globaledchat
And that can make a world of difference to a student and their family. Feeling "seen" and feeling valued is HUGE! It all comes back to empathy and creating spaces for understanding. #globaledchat
A6: The usual Skype, Hangout etc. all work well. Also like tools such as Flipgrid & Padlet that can be more asynchronous. We have a Google Domain connection with Costa Rica so students can all be part of a classroom together. #globaledchat
A6: Social Media--give students the opportunity to tweet or skype with a diverse, global set of experts in the field that you are teaching. You would be surprised how open professionals are to interacting with students. #globaledchat
A6. I have already seen it used to help give students a much greater access to various news resources on the internet via Chromebooks. Of course, it's also important to ensure students know how to properly cite various news sites. #globaledchat#osussmce
A6: Research, communicate, explore... At this point the world is so small; we carry communication and the ability to connect in our pocket and yet we seem further apart than ever. #globaledchat
A6: There are so many great ways to connect to classrooms and workplaces across the U.S. and globe to expand students’ understanding and global perspective, much of it free via the internet, Apps and resources we did not have when I went through K-12. #globaledchat
Using the internet for telecollaborative projects, such as information exchanges, interpersonal exchanges, work and experience exchanges, and strategies exchanges can give students a more global view of the world. #globaledchat
@EduroLearning is a great resource to give students a global view of the world. They have programs fro E-Pals, Skyping with other schools, and virtual field trips, as well as a ton more resources for parents and teachers #ssvpln#GlobalEdchat
A6. It can be something as simple as having students post to a padlet or contribute to a FlipGrid. This demonstrates the ease of global connection. #globaledchat
We are also working on PBL/inquiry-based learning projects into our Global Classrooms. We are working towards sustainable partnerships, moving beyond pen pal type exchanges. PBL certainly does this! #globaledchat
In reply to
@hsingmaster, @EmpaticoOrg, @Educurious
There are some great organizations working in this space too to help teachers/schools looking to find counterparts abroad who can connect virtually. @PCThirdGoal@StevensInit just to name a couple! #globaledchat
A6 - #skypemoments have done wonders to open students' eyes to a global view of the challenges they face and to ways they can use social media to their benefit. #Globaledchat
A6. Honestly, a computer, projector, and hi-speed internet connection are still the mainstays—I don't feel that new purchases on a large scale are needed. Smartphones and apps have added new opportunities, esp. if you're ok with BYOD! #GlobalEdChat
Our teachers develop a performance-based assessment for our students in the Global Classroom. They connect Portrait of a Graduate skills+content+SDGs. Our partner school may do the same thing, or may have another goal that we support. #globaledchat
A7: I also have new PD modules coming out on December 1 to assist with integrating global content into #STEM! I'm looking for educators to help pilot them, please contact me for more info: hsingmaster@asiasociety.org #globaledchat#globaled18#globaled#IEW2018
Many of our #TitleVI National Resource Centers are working to make more connections with STEM and CTE teachers, students, and schools -- Reach out to them to ask about their resources! You can find their websites here (look at NRCs) https://t.co/CQUBKiUP7U#globaledchat
Lots of connections between global citizenship and digital citizenship. It's important to teach these skills as well as they create their digital footprint. #globaledchat
A7: There are so MANY free resources to use online. @hsingmaster's CTE kit, our lesson plans and activities, even NASA has great things to help integrate STEM into your classroom. #globaledchat
A5: When exposed to other cultures, students can gain qualities like compassion and skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving! #globaledchat
We also have #TitleVI Centers for International Business Education that are a FANTASTIC resource for teachers looking to get "global" into their business curricula. Connect with them here: https://t.co/m2SE7mkNzf#globaledchat@CIBER_USA
A7. For layers and earthquakes, https://t.co/HMZABcB2RH could be a great resource to learn about the global activity of earthquakes. This could then go on to talk about how different regions have adapted to earthquakes over the centuries. #globaledchat#osussmce
A6: I recently just learned about google earth and I loved it! I think it would be a great tool for opening up students eyes and allow them to fully see somewhere across the world! #globaledchat
A6: Social Media--give students the opportunity to tweet or skype with a diverse, global set of experts in the field that you are teaching. You would be surprised how open professionals are to interacting with students. #globaledchat
