Q1: how do you go about planning your offensive and defensive install schedules? #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachJSmith55 Jan 15 @ 9:10 PM EST
#wvhsfbchat Jerry Smith. Former HC from Frederick, MD
  • CoachPoynorPHS Jan 15 @ 9:11 PM EST

A1--We get ten days in pads in spring and use those ten to install what we consider our "base concepts". #wvhsfbchat
  • FBCoachGerman Jan 15 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1. I backwards plan everything I want for summer, opener, then conf. Also make sure I have top EDDs and drills ready in spring #wvhsfbchat
  • LCGrizzlyFB Jan 15 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 We package run/rpo and passes together that are similar (i.e. trap/ctr) Passes broke into families (screen, quicks, 3 step) #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachJSmith55 Jan 15 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: We tend to break our offensive installation based on blocking schemes. Most passes are already installed due to summer 7v7. #wvhsfbchat
  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:14 PM EST
Defensively we begin with a 4 day install of our fronts coupled with cov 1 first, match , and cover 3. Then Begin with the heat! #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachBehnfeldt Jan 15 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: O, we look to put in series of plays each day to chunk it. D, we look to focus on adjustments to a set of formations #wvhsfbchat
  • J_E_Rogers Jan 15 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1) Start with base package & add each day with review day every few days. Whatever goes in is only thing ran that practice. #wvhsfbchat
  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:15 PM EST
    #wvhsfbchat
    • wingtcoachdon Jan 15 @ 9:15 PM EST

  • CoachJSmith55 Jan 15 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1: On D, I dont like coming out of our base front and coverage till we feel good with it. If you can't defend w/Base, not good. #wvhsfbchat
  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:18 PM EST
Question 2 coming right up... #wvhsfbchat

    A2: 5 minute segments, typically 24-30. #wvhsfbchat
  • KurtEarl14 Jan 15 @ 9:22 PM EST

    A2 5 min segments. @ 30 periods total. #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachBehnfeldt Jan 15 @ 9:22 PM EST
A2: typically use Indy/group/team format. The amount of time depends on point of the season and what needs work. #wvhsfbchat
  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:22 PM EST
A2: everything is in 5 min periods for us, cuz we run a split practice, typically we are 26 periods but try to work to 22 by nov #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachJSmith55 Jan 15 @ 9:22 PM EST
    A2. We use 5 minute segments... about 24 to 27 segments.Kids need consistency. #wvhsfbchat
  • CoachAdams9 Jan 15 @ 9:22 PM EST
5 min segments around 32 total. Try and keep it as close to time as possible, keep parents happy. #wvhsfbchat
  • gmanoneone Jan 15 @ 9:23 PM EST

  • LCGrizzlyFB Jan 15 @ 9:24 PM EST
5 minutes everyday, go over 24 periods during teaching/install to slow things down for new concepts. #wvhsfbchat
    In reply to @gmanoneone
  • wingtcoachdon Jan 15 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: I like ten minute periods. Position coaches can build in water/transition time. #wvhsfbchat
  • slade248 Jan 15 @ 9:24 PM EST
Q2 early in the season we go 15 min per. As time goes on we break it down to 10 min tempo sessions. Everything we do is fast. #wvhsfbchat
    • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:19 PM EST
Q2: what amount of time do you use when timing segments (periods) and how many periods typically make up a practice? #wvhsfbchat
  • gmanoneone Jan 15 @ 9:25 PM EST
In 5 min how many reps are u getting? We must be really inefficient bc I can't c having less than 10 for what we've done in past #wvhsfbchat
  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:26 PM EST
    #wvhsfbchat
    • CoachSmoor Jan 15 @ 9:25 PM EST
we typically use 5 min segs during indy and group. Try not to go 10 min until team scripts.
      In reply to @WVFBCHAT
  • wingtcoachdon Jan 15 @ 9:27 PM EST
5 minutes is good, but 10 lets me spend 6 on "this" & 4 on "that." Just a bit more flexibility. Not too different. #wvhsfbchat
    In reply to @LCGrizzlyFB
  • KurtEarl14 Jan 15 @ 9:27 PM EST
Good question. We never use only 1 period for something. Always 2 or 3 or 5 or whatever. #wvhsfbchat
    • gmanoneone Jan 15 @ 9:25 PM EST
In 5 min how many reps are u getting? We must be really inefficient bc I can't c having less than 10 for what we've done in past #wvhsfbchat

  • CoachAdams9 Jan 15 @ 9:28 PM EST

  • Mr_Tanner23 Jan 15 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3)coach on the run! Do not talk the kids to death... try and get as many reps as possible! #wvhsfbchat
  • KurtEarl14 Jan 15 @ 9:30 PM EST

  • CoachJSmith55 Jan 15 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3. I'd love to have a segment timer. But usually, my watch & whistle. I try to have 1 coach responsible for keeping me on time. #wvhsfbchat
  • coachboyneDHS Jan 15 @ 9:30 PM EST
Q3--we created cards for coaches to hold up for scout team fronts and coverages..allowed us to keep our tempo during team per.. #wvhsfbchat
  • FBCoachGerman Jan 15 @ 9:30 PM EST

  • WVFBCHAT - Moderator Jan 15 @ 9:31 PM EST
Spotify music with segment timer playing over it, don't have to manually run it! #wvhsfbchat

  • CoachBehnfeldt Jan 15 @ 9:54 PM EST
A6: we have EDDs but also will integrate drills to help develop a struggling skill. It's about how you balance your time with it #wvhsfbchat

EDD's with my WR's. Stance, start, stock block, cone/agility, competition. Then prioritize for group, game plan... #wvhsfbchat

Yes and no. Some of my position coaches do, some don't. I let them do what they think is best. #wvhsfbchat

Do you have EDD's (everyday drills) on each side of the ball or do you try to stay specific to skills you are struggling with? #wvhsfbchat

A6: coaching QBs we have EDDs and then focus on offensive specific skills-drops/rollouts/diff throws/stuff we struggle with/etc #wvhsfbchat

Q7 Wisconsin has limited us to 75 minutes of full contact in preseason and 60 minutes during season. For small schools its hard #wvhsfbchat
