Welcome to ! Introduce yourself, your location and role. This week’s topic: Direct Instruction. https://t.co/IjE68RI2wX
-
-
Happy to take the reigns tonight. Here to ask some simple ?’s because they are often the hardest to answer.
-
Hello, Tribe! I’m your Roland, a Tech Coordinator from Sacramento. I’ll be your host tonight. https://t.co/NKvhR1hRl4

-
Pleasure to have you aboard tonight, Tom.
-
-
Hi there, Sally from the PD Dept at Placer County Office of Education.

-
-
Susan Stewart in Fresno, ready for some learning!
-
-
-
-
Hello Dan from looking forward to an chat
-
SUSAN! So great to finally meet face to face on Saturday!
-
A1: Explicit teaching using lectures and demonstrations. Many focused on one.
-
A1: Direct instuction is when the teacher is the vessel that deliver the content.
-
-
A1: The sage on the stage, upfront conducting.
-
Jenn V SoCal Math Coach. Watching Super Tuesday results and checking out
-
-
A1 teachers are the central focus leading the content/skill learning - direct flow of info from T to Ss
-
-
with this def, could students provide direct instruction too? Interesting...
-
-
A1: When you have a concept to explicitly give instruction on. Teacher to class or small group.
-
A1: Direct instruction is when the teacher is the leader of instruction in a whole-class teaching model.
-
Yes! Reminds me of that saying "Move from sage on the stage to guide on the side"
-
Sage on stage or guide on side? Is one better than another, or are both a necessity? https://t.co/VKdea3FNAh
-
-
A1: The sage on the stage, upfront conducting.
-
A1: Direct instruction is teacher-led where the teacher is the main distributor of information
-
good point I think of it as the teacher is directly instructing as the "expert"
-
. Teacher pours knowledge into the student, and empty vessel. Teacher knows, Student grows https://t.co/lepaOVQ061
-
-
A1: Direct instuction is when the teacher is the vessel that deliver the content.
-
Can a teacher ever really deliver something to ALL students at once?
-
"direct flow of info" reminds me of origin of DI- when storytellers held ALL the info and needed to deliver it
-
Direct instruction… not just for teachers anymore!
-
-
. OK...My statement has a bit of tongue in cheek to it...all students may not be learning https://t.co/LAh4ugM4EW
-
-
Can a teacher ever really deliver something to ALL students at once?
-
Many immediately envision whole class. Small group direct instruction is important, too.
-
in not saying how effective it was though!
-
How about small group direct instruction? Is one better than another?
-
A1: In direct instruction, content is delivered directly and explicitly. One gives knowledge to another.
-
Can students deliver direct instruction?
-
curious on your perspective as our PBL expert on what role this should play in lesson design
-
. in small groups, don't Ss learn from each other? Ts can lead small groups and indiv. Ss https://t.co/sskrOo8Jgb
-
-
Many immediately envision whole class. Small group direct instruction is important, too.
-
A balance of both. Ts can constantly switch modes as needed. Flexibility is key.
-
My opinion is that direct instruction is when the Tr leads. I don't think anyway is better. It's how you use it.
-
-
It has such strong connotations. Worth reflecting on from time to time.
-
If students are serving in the "teacher role" they can deliver direction instruction..imo
-
Are students blank slates? Or slabs of clay with a culture already hiding inside?
-
. direct instruct has a place at the table, but so does discovery, inquiry, collaboration https://t.co/JrYKrhK0GU
-
-
curious on your perspective as our PBL expert on what role this should play in lesson design
-
in my opinion there should be balance, If it were on a scale I would say guide on side to be heavier
-
A2: Use DI to launch a thought process, synthesize info or to deliver content that might not be easily reached through inquiry
-
Sculpture, not culture. Lol
-
-
The old one-room school house model. Handing down of knowledge.
-
A2: When giving instructions, when showing examples, before Ss launch into discovery, to set up a scenario, etc...
-
-
Ah yes, we do have that degree which suddenly makes us the carriers of all expertise.
-
A2: I haven't taught a full lecture in 4 yrs but sometimes I need a quick 5 min direct instruction lesson to teach kids
-
-
A2: Direct/otherwise, Ts have knowledge to share. HOW is the big ? Direct should be focused in doses https://t.co/mbq95yNDh7
-
Sorry...late to the party. Writing sub plans. Daughter has a snow day. Tonya, MS tech teacher, Michigan!
-
that's kind of the way I think of it & it differentiates from other forms
-
A2: anything completely new with no background.
-
A2: Use DI to model...and never for longer than the minutes of their age.
-
How would you know if learning took place?
-
Is that DI, though? Or have we evolved into a different model/approach?
-
. I am a constructivist: Ss build, Ts scaffold and support; Ss discover, Ts direct https://t.co/vx6GYlNs6s
-
-
Are students blank slates? Or slabs of clay with a culture already hiding inside?
-
-
I think of it that way too for sure.
-
A2: I use it for certain skills in technology, but not as often as years ago!
-
Well put. No reason to have one method to rule them all, but there is good DI and poor DI.
-
exactly! fast modeling to get things going. Release to Ss as quickly as is reasonable
-
Is peer to peer learning direct instruction, though?
-
I know some admins who think DI is anytime teacher is talking.
-
-
Hi Aprill! And I agree. At that point, it’s evolved into something different.
-
I usually associate DI with whole group, as "small group" often lends itself to more interaction
-
So we can dispel the idea that you have to be the expert for DI? Learners can give DI?
-
. does DI have to come in full-meal size or can it be bite size? https://t.co/7oHeUNrysR
-
-
Is that DI, though? Or have we evolved into a different model/approach?
-
it would help if you are focusing on something like reducing teacher talk time and raising Ss talk
-
Analysis is often the missing link. But what data? I struggle with finding meaningful data.
-
-
-
Depends on how you define peer-to-peer learning. How is the learning occurring? Learning may not be through DI.
-
Before this chat, I’d have said yes. Now… I’m rethinking my thinking.
-
-
for sure! to follow data like that you need a good sample of time
-
. Think of data when designing lesson. Feedback: need 2 know what works Goals drive data https://t.co/aeYqKscwBX
-
-
Analysis is often the missing link. But what data? I struggle with finding meaningful data.
-
True. So how do we determine learning, let alone where it occurred?
-
-
agreed DI has a place but become a bad word from when it's overused. Honestly, extremists of anything are scary
-
Reverse engineer to discover your needs! Brilliant!
-
A3: I rarely prefer direct instruction. I believe it doesn't lend itself to quality interaction and discovery for engagement
-
A3: For my class, they can complete and/or apply the skill that I introduced. Authentic Assessment https://t.co/MXKaQjkS0p
-
-
I like that minutes of age trick!
-
A3: Grappling with content delivered. Writing, short discussions, modeling. Still engaging in learning
-
-
A3: But for direct instruction to be worthwhile I feel there must be interaction and constant feedback given during instruction
-
A3 Fascinating/Performer T. Not me. T creates a lesson that relates to Ss meets them where they are https://t.co/RyzFSoqVwX
-
Lay the ground work with direct instruction, Then step back. I like that a lot.
-
A3 engagement almost entrancement! Asking questions, pumped & ready to take the learning on https://t.co/EbTg4Gpu2K
-
I find myself talking less and less in classrooms, yet I can’t shake that first 5 min talk.
-
A2:Grading essays now & thinking these wouldn't be as great w/o DI. Students practiced while I modeled.
-
A3: , taking notes, asking questions, and playing
-
In science I often let a video clip, gif, reading or image of a discrepant event open the show
-
-
. visual engagement and meeting students where they are is key https://t.co/buDDNeO3Qi
-
-
In science I often let a video clip, gif, reading or image of a discrepant event open the show
-
of course it is cheating when class involves lighting things on fire/blowing them up
-
-
Agreed! Give and take, while adjusting instruction. Makes a lot of sense!
-
-
-
Learning CAN be measured through evidence of meeting the intended objective. There can be several sub-objs, too
-
-
-
But that’s ok! It has a purpose. I think.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
A4: We need to step away from our own comfort zone as teachers and get away from quietness in the classroom.
-
How do you truly measure a demonstration of learning? Isn’t it binary? Yes or no?
-
-
-
-
There’s the stuff! Howdy, Aron!
-
-
-
A4: short/concentrated bursts of knowledge 2 spark imagination and Ignite inquiry, a spark they turn 2 a flame w/ investigation
-
-
Nice work capturing examples, telling your story.
-
-
. Sometimes it is so I can get a feel for how they are each day and a personal connection.
-
My entire class is flipped so I walk around my class getting examples of everything they do. I love it.
-
-
That *WAS* sarcasm, for the record. You are talented one, Ari.
-
. I have almost completely switched to flipped/blended instruction for that very reason!
-
So then are there essays reflections of their skills, or a hybrid of yours and theirs? Which is ok, BTW. Just asking.
-
I'd never go back anymore to "regular" teaching. It opens up a world of possibility.
-
Flipped/blended instruction does stop learning when Ts is absent OR when Ss are absent.
-
-
As I see a variety of responses for learning and engagement, thinking we (all educators) could benefit from a shared defn.
-
A5: I don't :) I assess students by walking around to each one multiple times a period having conversations with them.
-
I learned that working for the YMCA.
-
A5: Students respond (could be tech or old fash) and teachers next steps are based on the average needs of the group.
-
. Allows me time with my IEP, 504 and ESL students too!
-
Funny! Just has a meeting today to plan a roll-out for flipped sub plans! The learning will never stop!
-
We cannot forget the power of a teacher's words. DI can give kids a connection no video or program can. We are still important!
-
Gotcha. Funny how no skills can ever be taught in isolation. To take a math test, go gotta read.
-
-
. I even put links to the docs I upload into Google Classroom into my sub plans! Works like a charm!
-
That’s how I leave campus. Does that count?
-
-
Oh, I’ll be there fo’ sho’
-
-
agreed- a video would certainly struggle to read the room. ;)
-
-
A5: Most of my assignments are project-based. The produce something for me!
-
30 of the same essay, over and over.
-
So good DI leaves them with more questions than answers? Never thought about it that way before.
-
As I’m trying to keep up with you intelligent folks, my heart is melting with all the GIFs showing up. https://t.co/3u69G7qu2h
-
-
-
A5: Through Ss responses and interactions...however I'm not so sure how I Feel about the DI model.
-
-
-
Best meme of the night goes to you, Aprill!
-
-
Been there. Done that. And it’s all our own fault. Good for you for breaking the cycle.
-
Best. GIF. Ever. Now if a teacher can get the students to swoon like that with DI then we're onto something!
-
A6: seeing as it is mostly intro strategy, YouTube, vine, media clips make gr8 openers. Then u flip it- have them make 1 @ end
-
A6 flickr, google image search set to animated, youtube, something for a back channel (ex classroom replys)
-
I’d argue that looking closely is the most powerful on that list.
-
A6: My LAN School. I can window in to every student's computer. They can see my screen and try the new skill I am introducing
-
A6-surprised no one said GIFS!
-
Happy to have you, Karen!
-
A6 also something for checking for understanding quickly - google forms are my general go to
-
It’s worth reflecting on practices, no matter how common place.
-
I eluded to it with image search set to animated, but yeh GIFs!!!
-
-
-
Your secret’s safe with me. And Twitter.
-
thats the one, poll everywhere is my alt to gForm
-
I completely agree with you on this one.
-
A6 I like to make a gForm that parallels the DI & use data validation to prevent moving on OR provide a challenge
-
You all rock! Thanks for chiming in and being the best PLN ever!
-
. starting to use quite a bit for ease on phone https://t.co/fG3FMMHUq2
-
-
thats the one, poll everywhere is my alt to gForm
-
A6: I also use Padlet to get things started with the DI model but I also take a spin on it.
-
-
A6: I have been tinkering with lately. Pretty neat stuff!
-
. in accord to that is the engage start but is that DI https://t.co/vi79vpi9CE
-
-
