Question 1 is coming up; let’s chat!
Dylan from Ottawa, Canada!
A1) Least restrictive environment implies that students needing support will receive it in an inclusive environment.
Susan-MD State Director of Instructional Programs-Great topic!

A1) LRE is the most appropriate environment for a student based on his or her unique learning needs.
A 1) "the most appropriate environment based on the individual's unique learning needs" - Nat'l Assoc of Private Special Ed Centers
A1) LRE presupposes that students will benefit socially/academically when grouped w/age-mates.
A1) LRE in spec ed is requirement in federal law that stu with disabilities are educated to max poss extent with nondisabled peers
Twitter is running especially slow today ... :(
gen ed classroom is often the MRE for GT
gifted need time with cognitive peers
A2) LRE has an inverse connotation when applied to gifted education. (Hershey, 2010)
A2) GT kids need to be with their intellectual peers.
Even if that means adults! RT gifted need time with cognitive peers
The Least Restrictive Environment for Gifted and Talented Students (T&F Preview: Roeper Review) https://t.co/wWLaTxmJmc
Rather than educating gifted students to the maximum extent possible
with nongifted peers,
A2) For gifted students, a regular classroom may constitute a restrictive environment. (Hershey, 2010)
A2) GT kids don't need all-inclusive environments - usually the opposite is true, at least for much of the time.
A2) Theoretically it looks the same, but LRE in emphasizing more freedom in choice, options, and self-direction.
some states like New Mexico subscribe to the research-based belief that GT should be educated with their like-ability peers
in order to be academically and intellectually challenged (in state policy)
A2) LRE for gifted should be more about opportunities to work at approp. level, speed and depth with intellectual peers
A2) Gifted students often work at ‘keeping behind’ to not appear too different from age-peers. (Hershey, 2010)
Florida, Kansas,Louisiana, New Mexico, Tennessee, and
West Virginia as of 2006 (?? Shaunessy)
Yes! https://t.co/5Bl6kb7MAo
A2) LRE for gifted should be more about opportunities to work at approp. level, speed and depth with intellectual peers
I was a former GT teacher in self-contained clases and now work as G Specialist in an inclusive environment. There are pros and cons
Would be interested to hear pro & cons!
Can anyone in talk about experiences with a Montessori setting? Does it help GT kids be with their intelex peers?
"Playing school..." SUCH a waste of time! https://t.co/Gp6npd7yW3

LRE for gifted req philosophical shift..student-centered learning approach and T training and support
A3) a team of professionally qualified indiv and the S, parents
A3) All stakeholders should be involved in placing student ~ the student, parent, teacher, IEP team (if available).
A3) based on data- cognitive and affective needs, personality, motivation, etc
A2. An appropriate LRE is determined for each exceptional S, and a range of placements need to be available.
success of gifted inclusion classes hinges upon the culture and dynamics of classroom teachers
A3) Multiple criteria s/b considered in any placement decisions ~ don’t rely on single assessment.
True but my concern was about age-grouping, and whether that works. I fear it might be too vulnerable to bullying
What Do Students Who Are Intellectually Gifted Say They Experience & Need in Inclusive Classroom? https://t.co/Rgre1eVwdC
If ALL are engaged in their own learning...shouldn't be a problem - common goals.
We’re already half way through our chat! Thanks for all the great sharing.
A3) LRE should be decided upon in collaboration between the student, teacher, parent, & specialist.
A4) I know of no federal protection under the law for gifted-only students regarding LRE; it’s only based in logic.
A4) If kids are to be in an environment that does not restrict their learning and is suitable to their individual needs, then ...
A3. ON law provides for Ss to attend home-school program/placement mtngs at age 16. Younger Ss may attend mtngs and/or be consulted.
A4) may use portions of federal law in the U.S. to seek accommodations pertaining to special education only.
A4) no federal provision, up to states to determine. Some have GIEP/EP -similar to IEP-for GT when GT falls under state spec ed dep
A4 - There is nothing illegal about ed malpractice. It happens in classrooms everyday when there is no voice and choice to learning
We had a GIEP/504 for one child; still didn't help!
SO true ... https://t.co/edGY4fJfcS
A4 - There is nothing illegal about ed malpractice. It happens in classrooms everyday when there is no voice and choice to learning
Inclusion classes don't benefit underachievers but benefit 2E. Teachers need differentiated instruction
even with FAPE, no guarantee, public schools not req to provide a 'perfect' fit
A5) Parents should educate themselves about state regulations pertaining to gifted education; learn the vocabulary.
A5) Excellent question. I never found a successful method. I mean, I could advocate, but it didn't get us anywhere.
Often felt the same way. Why we are still advocating. ;)
Galllagher: We should remind ourselves that the LRE, like inclusion or resource rooms, is a geogr term not an educational term
" They tell you where the student is but not what is happening to them in that setting" parents keep in mind A5
A5) Parents need to make the case that there are consequences when gifted students languish in an unchallenging environment.
A5) parents can provide data like talent search testing and projects done at home that show gap between env and potential
A5) and keep acceleration options open
A5) Parents can advocate by meetings with teachers etc and locating/sharing resources and opportunities
Really? How do parents get that engaged to commit the time and personal resources? You expect a lot from them.
A5) unfortunately sometimes it takes a crisis-failure, underach, behavior issues etc.
Would you elaborate on what you mean by the statement? https://t.co/9OozMqXfYx
A2) LRE has an inverse connotation when applied to gifted education. (Hershey, 2010)
Inclusion 'can' be the most restrictive in many instances.
A5 - Fight to remove barriers. Begins w Kindergarten... Get out of their way! RT Q5) How can a parent advocate for LRE?
A) Homeschooling. Or you could try homeschooling. Homeschooling is another good option.
Ha! Great minds ... was just about to post this link! ;)
A^ at least provide cluster grouping if schools use gen ed for service with LRE
A5) Parents can advocate for LRE as they do for other aspects of -- suggestions, support, & collaboration with others.
A6) and again- keep acceleration on the table. even with grade skips, pacing will still be an issue, but closes the gap a bit
A6) Alternatives should push for open opportunities such as standalone programs, acceleration, & ability grouping.
Amen! Teachers, Gifted Specialists, and parents must build relationship/community to support the gifted
I second that! https://t.co/7BPCZ0JSqN
A) Homeschooling. Or you could try homeschooling. Homeschooling is another good option.
A6. Prediction: LRE will become increasingly irrelevant in US due to progressive classroom approaches to address needs of all Ss.
A6) Alternatives can include mentorships, independent study, and online options.
We’re nearing the end of today … final thoughts/takeaways?
This will be archived at & the link will be shared via later today
Preach it!! https://t.co/i0Tx04gtWY
A6. Prediction: LRE will become increasingly irrelevant in US due to progressive classroom approaches to address needs of all Ss.
A6) Alternatives to LRE could be homogeneously grouped classes, programs, etc. where environment is already modified.
But as is the case with all Ss, parents will need to remain vigilant in their (good-faith) work with schools.
