Fred Boss, 2nd level art teacher, currently with @NCCAie and working on #seniorcyclereview so interested to hear people's thoughts tonight on "'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?" Welcome to the first #edchatie of this new year

School Bus Protests #edchatie If there are lessons to be learned from the protests from parents about not getting on to a Bus Eireann service, it's that we have to analyse why the situation happened in... https://t.co/wKAWAvy0dJ
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 3:39 PM EDT
OK - let's begin . . . What are your thoughts on "'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?" Remember to include the #edchatie hashtag in all of your tweets for the next hour - they'll be collated and available after the discussion
  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 3:40 PM EDT
#edchatie I thought most subjects were reformed at this stage.
  • mssweeneyhomeec Sep 3 @ 3:41 PM EDT
    #edchatie hey you're back 😁 Julie p/p teacher.
  • j_loughlin Sep 3 @ 3:42 PM EDT
John Loughlin, Biology teacher @stjosephsbish and Chair @IrishSciTeach I think it's very important that sensationalist headlines we all saw in the middle of August don't form the basis of '#screform' and that any changes are *fully* evidence-based. #edchatie

In order to “do it right “ I really do think we need to connect with teachers throughout the EU more #edchatie
  • julesheeney Sep 3 @ 3:44 PM EDT
Buy in from teachers is huge. Each school should have a representative offering feedback. I know there are voluntary feedback forms available but if JC reform taught us anything, it’s that majority of teachers don’t engage in that feedback #edchatie
  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 3 @ 3:44 PM EDT
#edchatie Eistear from Mayo, MFL etc. Senior Cycle reform must be be based genuinely on teacher input every step of the way, if it has to happen.

  • istone_irene Sep 3 @ 3:45 PM EDT
Great to be one of the 41 collaborating schools involved in #seniorcyclereview. Offers great opportunity to hear views of teachers, parents, students #edchatie
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 3:45 PM EDT
They are at Junior Cycle level with a few done at Senior Cycle - but #seniorcyclereview is looking at the whole of Senior Cycle as it currently is. Check out https://t.co/ruKX1dnwnH #edchatie

  • history_bomber Sep 3 @ 3:45 PM EDT
Hi, Brian from St Michael’s history - im really hoping those involved, leave the Leaving Cert history course alone, as the new curriculum since 2006 is modern, balanced & offers huge potential to create & think critically (just extend dates of the project past 1989) #edchatie
    In reply to @fboss
  • daire_lambert Sep 3 @ 3:45 PM EDT
Completely agree. I think we should consider what works currently for us just as much as what doesn't #edchatie
    In reply to @j_loughlin, @fboss, @NCCAie, @stjosephsbish, @IrishSciTeach
  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 3 @ 3:48 PM EDT
Absolutely. I would also argue that there are serious issues in our schools which need to be addressed before we begin Senior Cycle reform. Any changes which take place need to happen in healthy, fully -resourced schools, else they will not work.#edchatie https://t.co/NKaQCVTeQc

Senior Cycle Reform cannot be rushed, like private industry would like. We have one chance to get it right. Piecemeal tinkering will fail. Reform should build on the changes in JC. #edchatie

#edchatie Having worked on a number of innovative projects in ACPS, the rate of change here is too slow. the world these students are facing is far faster than civil service mandarins are comfortable. I think they are happy in being a 2nd rate educational system
  • mssweeneyhomeec Sep 3 @ 3:51 PM EDT
#edchatie but how much will actually be taken on board? I remember participating in the NCCA surveys for junior cycle reform & the minister of the day largely ignored the results & proceeded with his own "vision"
    In reply to @MccoySelina
  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 3:52 PM EDT
#edchatie I have noticed how teacher centred the Irish education system is. Let the students follow their own passions.
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 3:54 PM EDT
Interested to know if and how the LC History curriculum would be best implemented through other subjects? #edchatie #seniorcyclereview
    In reply to @history_bomber
  • noelahogan Sep 3 @ 3:55 PM EDT
Noel from Drogheda - SC Reform will be most effective when it’s accepted that the LC should be much more than just a gateway to 3rd level. Let the universities take responsibility for their own entrance requirements instead of foisting it on second level as it is now. #edchatie

  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 3:55 PM EDT
#edchatie I wonder how much compromise emerges from curriculum design? Instead of a thoroughbred horse, do we end up with camels?
  • DavidClarkeDub Sep 3 @ 3:56 PM EDT
As another school partipating in the review we are taking the advice that ‘blue sky thinking’ is being sought seriously because to do otherwise would render the whole process useless #edchatie
  • j_loughlin Sep 3 @ 3:56 PM EDT
I think this is an important point....opinions of science teachers were ignored also. #edchatie

Almost halfway through the first #edchatie discussion of this new academic year and we're chatting about "'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?"
  • MissDTweet Sep 3 @ 3:57 PM EDT
Teacher input and consultation is essential. Also think we can learn a lot from other countries and what worked for them... #edchatie
  • history_bomber Sep 3 @ 3:58 PM EDT
Think the marking scheme, where 40% of the overall marks are allocated for assessment, arguement, critical thinking & making valid points referring back to the Question asked - gives students scope to express themselves with relevant information #edchatie

  • GermanTeachIRL Sep 3 @ 3:58 PM EDT
#edchatie An admirable ideal, but in real life, students tend to thrive with structured direction. And in our classes of 25 or more pupils, structure and clear guidance is an an absolute necessity.
    In reply to @johnmayo
  • peter_lydon Sep 3 @ 3:58 PM EDT
The minister by his own admission, congratulated the NCCA for drafting the #jcreform in secret. #edchatie Cannot be allowed to o this with #LCReform (Oops…another hashtag invented!!)

  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 3:58 PM EDT
#edchatie Do we need a "national curriculum" with a defined syllabus?
  • peter_lydon Sep 3 @ 3:59 PM EDT
This is fine once we have a decent core education curriculum at lower JC. we don’t anymore. #edchatie

  • clairenichan Sep 3 @ 4:01 PM EDT
My thoughts exactly. Every Irish teacher I know said cut the literature, let the kids speak the language. So the NCCA added a few more poems and a novel! Scared to think what they'll do to the LC. #edchatie

Well check out some of the stuff @k12albemarle @K12AlbemarleLab has done over the past few years. They even wrote a book @TimelessLrng #edchatie

#edchatie What if teachers crowdsourced the new syllabus? It might not work in theory but looking at Wikipedia it could work in practice :-)
  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 4:05 PM EDT
#edchatie does echo my point earlier.

For the first #edchatie discussion of this new academic year we're talking online about "'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?"
  • johnmayo Sep 3 @ 4:13 PM EDT
#edchatie Any reform will probably serve students to nearly 2040. -
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 4:14 PM EDT
Looking to teachers at home and abroad, using consultation, #studentvoice and #parentvoice and building on good work to date are some of the suggestions from tonight's #edchatie on "'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?" #seniorcyclereview
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 4:16 PM EDT
The kids starting in Junior Infants this year are the young adults who will fully experience any #seniorcyclereform work done #edchatie

  • MrsOConnor2 Sep 3 @ 4:16 PM EDT
Have met many textbook authors at conferences open to feedback - could NCCA do the same - would catch a greater footfall & be subject specific #edchatie
  • j_loughlin Sep 3 @ 4:16 PM EDT
It is absolutely critical that we get it right. All education stakeholders must be on-board with it, but *in particular* the teachers - as they/we are the ones that have to enact it. We get this wrong and it affects a whole generation. #edchatie

  • KMUBarry Sep 3 @ 4:19 PM EDT
Kate, English & French teacher in Cork. Thoughts include: senior cycle being recognised as educational stage in its own right, not merely prep for 3rd level, retention of exams as main assessment mode, agree with @peter_lydon that new JC is disaster for senior cycle #edchatie
  • pamelaaobrien Sep 3 @ 4:19 PM EDT
#edchatie Sorry I'm very late to tonight's chat. Pam, lecturer in Tipperary
  • j_loughlin Sep 3 @ 4:20 PM EDT
Teachers *have* to believe in it....and not just the relatively few enthusiastic 'get-involved-in-everything' type of teachers, but *all* teachers #edchatie

  • The_Urell Sep 3 @ 4:21 PM EDT
Kate Urell from Dublin - we need to move away from the seven subjects ideal and towards more cross-curricular projects while still maintaining high standards #edchatie
  • KMUBarry Sep 3 @ 4:22 PM EDT
Kids are older starting school (more likely 5 than 4) and most do 6 yrs in secondary. I'd like to see opportunity for more specialisation in the final year, but not til then as breadth a positive feature of current system #edchatie #screform
  • fboss Sep 3 @ 4:23 PM EDT
Just scraped in to tonight's #edchatie discussion on 'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?" - more than welcome!

  • peter_lydon Sep 3 @ 4:24 PM EDT
How about we do NOTHING with #LCReform & instead just remove the points system & see how LC responds. Current LC is almost entirely responsible for the adaptability of Irish workers MNCs love - that’s why we have 20% US FDI in EU despite 1% of its population #edchatie
  • pamelaaobrien Sep 3 @ 4:24 PM EDT
Have just survived the LC in our house last year so not sure what my thoughts are at the moment 😂😂 #edchatie

We're into the famous final five minutes of tonight's first #edchatie discussion of this new academic year on 'Senior cycle reform' - how can we ensure we do it right?" Any last thoughts, ideas, questions or solutions?
  • The_Urell Sep 3 @ 4:27 PM EDT
#edchatie Teachers who are prepared to be creative in this process need to be rewarded
  • peter_lydon Sep 3 @ 4:28 PM EDT
And don’t be misled by all the #JobsThatHaven’tBeenInventedYet, or the #CodingGetafix We have Europe’s Silicon Valley right here, right now. Any ‘new’ #LCReform should focus on creating *educated* school grads with a healthy distain for the status quo #edchatie
