. Laura here, former Middle School Math and ELA teacher, heard about from !
Hello ! I’ll be your host for Students & Tech. I’m an engineer at Classkick and am passionate about quality ed-tech software!
Abby here! Former elementary school teacher. Heard about from
Kami here, 3rd grade, 1:1 ipads
I care about ed-tech because I feel, if used correctly, it can vastly improve student learning, passion & classroom culture.
Our host tonight is and he has chosen the topic of Students&Technology like mentioned here: https://t.co/xreJYqCTGR
student teacher in CPS checking in! 3rd grade bilingual :)
Shane, Special Ed teacher TF South High School
Q1: How do students feel about using tech in the classroom? Are they excited? Bored? Does it vary by the tech used?
. A1: I think that students are always really excited to try something new.
A1 My students are always excited, we use tech throughout the day and across the board. https://t.co/RMbGyAFrja
Q1: How do students feel about using tech in the classroom? Are they excited? Bored? Does it vary by the tech used?
My students were always incredibly excited about using tech in the classroom!
A1: They also really like to manipulate things themselves - so devices and one-to-one environments can be super exciting
A1: Students like the freedom they have using tech, but many state that they have difficulties pacing themselves.
A1: But, sometimes that novelty wears off just because they've used it and tried it and its not new anymore.
A1 sometimes its just to read articles on and other times for projects like
A1: Opportunity to try something new, excited, naturally intrigued
A1: And either way,the excitement about using the tech isn't necessarily tied to any actual learning. That's up to the teacher
I agree. It was always a challenge management wise for me while teaching to make sure they are doing something meaningful
. Oh - like stop motion photography? Are your kids making stop motion projects now?
A1: They love using the devices. Bottom line. They are intrigued by them.
A1: Students are more excited with tech, when what they are using is new to them.
How do you keep them interested after the novelty has worn off?
I use a dish strainer to put iPads in when lesson is going.
yes! they researched natural disasters, made homes 2 withstand disaster & r making movies showing off their home
That is smart! I like that idea
Not throwing all your surprises to them at once!
Welcome Norma! Can't wait to hear how your Chicago students are interacting with technology
true I got ipods 4 the listening center this yr & they weren't sticking 2 any 1 story, 2nd quarter: totally diff
Welcome Shane! Really exciting things coming out of the TF South Periscopes!
gradually introducing the concept, new features
Welcome Back - hope those English students are loving the technology you're teaching!
A1: Once the novelty is over you have to show the students how they can use the technology in a different ways and inspire.
We use different apps on different days. Helping keep them hopping!
How are you promoting that student choice while balancing accountability for students?
Once it is introduced, we can use it to possibly APPsmash and add to other projects!
Do you track student mastery through and ?
A1: Allowing them the freedom to explore initially,
Adults seem naturally intrigued by new technology as well! Guess we're all big kids!
WE love EPIC! Once story is read, we create something to show off what we learned!
Q2: Do you find that tech in the classroom helps students be more focused on the lesson? More distracted?
We just went 1-to-1 with iPads this year.....so not at that self-pace level yet in my classroom.
Hi all, here. We also LOVE EPIC and RazKids
YES! They both have options that automatically track student work.
Somedays it seems like the Ss know more than we do and try to show us new things and tricks!
&probably to have students see that they were learning& growing, even while using something like gamification.
A1: my kids love it and jump at the opportunity to use tech, even if it's for completing what would've been a worksheet!
Since ed tech - students say to me "Did you know..." vs. "How do you ..." love tech ed in K
Do you think that intrigue will wear off as they all own/have/use them on a daily basis?
What will students in 10 years be like? What will intrigue them?
A2: Being distracted all depends on the student in my classroom when using iPads.
A2: If the task is clear then I find the students are more engaged, and want to succeed.
A2 I find that once u have allowed students the ooportunity 2 play w/ tech then they can focus https://t.co/l8qsLFQjOM
Today we used CK to build CVC words and an assessment where they thought they were playing a game - best way to assess
A2: I think it depends on what, like if it's classkick or epic! there isn't much distraction because teachers can monitor
Do you keep a calendar of reveal dates for new technology?
I have had them for 5 years now. The intrigue has never worn off. I change the way I do things every year.
So once they were used to the tech, they started following along with just one story?
A2: Depends on SS - independent SS still focused those that want attention still ask ?
A2 pt2: and the kids are conscientious. also depends on how engaging the tech activity is and the student themselves!
A2: They have an attention span of 10 minutes. I teach for ten, practice for 20. That is just the way of life!
How do you invite student voice into that introduction? Are students presenting on new tech?
Welcome Lori! Glad to see you back and excited to hear about your students' use of tech!
A2: Not using an app for the sake of it, it should act as a learning tool.Once that is established the distraction is removed.
Yes!! I love it, they show me new sites or apps they try from home :) Maybe that can b a job: tech explorer
A2: At the start of year we talk about the iPads as tools and privilege to have them. SS really get that even at K
A2: My Ss know that I give lessons in short spurts and then allow for practice. After that, we demonstrate what we know.
A2: Our students have access to things like YouTube on our iPads, so I will lock students into certain apps to stay on task.
How your students can inspire others? Or how you can inspire your students?
Can we embed YouTube videos rather than just link in CK?
I use alot of create/production apps in my room.
Do your students showcase all their knowledge to anyone else? Classroom showcase on different days?
Also if Laura is here can we create a way for Ss to go back and look through series of CK assignments w/o Class Code?
Doug from West Michigan HS Chem A2: Ss more task oriented, especially with formative assessments.
We can't use YouTube on Ss devices.
Love the verb "AppSmash" - are students combining their app usage together?
Absolutely, allows for you to adapt and change delivery. Also its a two way learning journey
I agree & feel like that is true for all the work we give to students.
Students absolutely love iMovie
We APPsmash a lot in third grade. I use certain apps that I have and put them in ClassKick!
A2: Students love that we put their work on Our YouTube channel and also on Seesaw for their parents and family to see.
. A2: I think its all in the way that it is managed by teachers - but everyone needs some time to play at first
Love it to introduce new books or topics! The trailers are my favorite!
yes because the "playing" had worn off, and they saw it as a learning tool
. A2: Just like the adults want to experiment at first, the students need time to figure out how stuff works to use it
love bringing in pdf files from google into my Classkick for questions. Very convenient and easy!
Welcome Cathy! Glad you could join us because we KNOW your students are using lots of tech!
It's great when they can utilize that knowledge to help someone, too, so they're not just showing off
This is something I want to do!
Q3: Are there lessons or classroom situations that tech can (or should) never replace? Gym class? Recess?
could you please explain the work through to get it to you tube! Interested
And really use that knowledge to TEACH!
My Ss love being able to help others. They take pride in that.
The harder part is moving past that worksheet so that students really see tech a way to create and transform!
I agree. It is great for confidence boosting
That is such a great quote and example of the growth in our students!
A3: actual teacher support. students need that interaction. and who could replace recess/gym ever??? lol
A3: PE, Lunch-lol, recess!
We created a YouTube channel for our class and have our username and password on our board.
tech shouldn't prevent Ss from being active. Use tech to teach game rules or an exercise? To allow for more recess.
Absolutely! Setting up those norms and rubrics is essential for engagement and proper usage/effectiveness
A4 hands on stuff: cooking, sowing, learning 2 braid ur hair... tech cant replace feelings of product https://t.co/HF5XTHD0av
Especially when we can link that gaming and learning to something visual - so they can SEE their progress!
When working on any project in iMovie StopMotion, Explain Everything, etc. students will upload to YouTube.
Q3: We need to remember tech is a tool and not replace or diminish the humanity. Keep storytime human
We do a lot of SCOOTS around the room with devices. We use Doodle Buddy for that.
The key in that equation is you! Love hearing about innovation in our own teaching methods!
A3: The human interaction/face of teaching, engagement, participation
A4 i was thinking tech cant replace feelings of completed product but what about 3D printers? https://t.co/HF5XTHD0av
I will NEVER stop reading to them. With a BOOK, in my hands, turning pages! Changing voices!
10 minutes or less! But then again, so do most adults!
iPads have changed my teaching dynamic. I have found easier ways to do things each and every day!
no matter how big they get they love sitting on a rug looking at you read to them
I know right...10 minutes LIMIT! Attention span-gone. That is how it is on PERISCOPE!
Absolutely - you've hit it on the head! The teaching always comes first.
Using CK in small group work I can focus on child vs. recording, tracking - increases my attention to child - better practice
EXACTLY...they love to braid my hair when I read! No device can do that!
The ability to instantly share resources, not having to find a photocopier at the last minute
Took the words right out of my mouth. I just have them swipe down and GO. Lesson with 1 paper and a device.
A3: Tech is a great supplement to our classroom, but our students still benefit from class discussions and debates.
Cathy, at this time, we're not hosting the videos ourselves, so the link is the only connection to the video.
- I agree about everyday...I work more efficiently - leaves more time to focus on learners not mgmt. tasks
I need to find MORE time for small groups.
Q4: Do students come into your class knowing how to use tech? How do you teach tech to students who don't already know it?
We'll work to create a list of sites that may not be blocked by your school to link to videos
- Thanks! for response on embedding. Something to consider - some YouTube take SS to undesirable videos
A4: we are 2:1 in the grades before me. They use the devices for use of consumption apps. They learn tons the first week.
A4: New app required demonstration on the board, previous/older apps can get started away
A4: Most SS in our area have tech, those that don't catch on quick - very enticing, engaging tool - high motivation/desire
YES!!! save trees!!! and energy!!
A4: Where possible use students to demonstrate the app, allows you to spot common errors, allowing you to act as a guide
A4: This a big challenge with our high school students, they can Snapchat all day but they do struggle learning new apps!
We'll chat about that after - need some engineering Think Tank time to put that one together!
That is a great question! I find the kids know how to play and basics, but not the educational tech that is important
A4: I focus on tips and tricks that will be needed as they grow as a device user.
Love that! I have some super high tech kids!
Hi Doug! Glad to see you and hear about you and your students' thoughts about tech in the classroom!
A4: Most students do catch on pretty quick and those that need extra help are provided with more practice.
Absolutely! They know how to play! Need more than that!
A4: Some tech is subject specific, so exposure to that is limited especially the higher up in the school students go.
A4: allowing students the opportunity to share new features, tricks or shortcuts they have found,
Love that! Need to do more of that!
Q4 cont: What about Ss who don't even know how to use a Computer or Tablet? Don't understand keyboards or the internet?
A4: Love that some of my students will point out new things they can do in certain apps after an update.
A4: careful seating in the class, setting students on a task and spending 1:1 time to go back to basics
A4: Explore, Practice, Problem Solve, Practice, Peer Coach, Problem Solve, Practice ... :D
Just joining in. A4: yeah, even my impoverished students are tech natives.
A4: I find Ss who move in are so far behind compared to Ss who have gone through our system.
My principal used to make us have the students on computers for recess and it infuriated me!
I find that they are best tutors of tech for each other.
That's a great way to put it!
I think there are ways to bring technology in (counting heart rate), but it should never replace recess!
A4: you pair them up with someone who does, and they are experts at teaching each other tech :) https://t.co/VUTsDnOZNZ
Q4 cont: What about Ss who don't even know how to use a Computer or Tablet? Don't understand keyboards or the internet?
Q5: Tech can make it easier to share student work with parents. Is this helpful? What do parents think? Students?
Absolutely...Everyone has APPitude with that Device in HAND!
That is awful! Need to run and PLAY!
Absolutely, we call them "Assistant Coaches" in our class. SS learn support vs. take over :D
A4: they use language they understand, while I may be trying to call everything by its correct name. https://t.co/VUTsDnOZNZ
Q4 cont: What about Ss who don't even know how to use a Computer or Tablet? Don't understand keyboards or the internet?
A5: We use SeeSaw to show Ps what they have done during the day. Ps LOVE it!
A5: Have started to use SeeSaw to allow students to share their work with peers, going to introduce parents shortly.
A5: Ps are also welcome to come in afterschool to see anything they have been working on.
yes! kids at my school have grown up w/ the tech, even if just in the classroom, but not all schools have it
Today I used Seesaw to show P work we do on CK, told them to email me if they have iPads I will send Class Codes - team work
A5: My parents are connected across multiple platforms from seeing Classkick online, Seesaw, ClassDojo, and Periscope.
Do Ss love that their parents immediately know what happened that day? Does is stress Ss out?
A5: we don't use any digital portfolio or anything yet. Use Power School for grades. Twitter to share school events.
My Ss use it like Social Media. They take pride in their comments. We have guidelines posted for comments!
A5: I also check in to monitor if /when there may be too much info. Most say never enough and love it!
Not enabled that just yet, need to try it
I have had them screenshot a page completed and had them explain in SeeSaw. Great too!
A5: P communication - mostly Seesaw, Class Webpage #2, then email.
Wouldn't it be cool 2link technology (like Skype session) with other students eating lunch around the world?
my parents seem to love and gravitate towards it. Even if its just me posting it to https://t.co/30gWRzTici
Q5: Tech can make it easier to share student work with parents. Is this helpful? What do parents think? Students?
Getting ready to switch to DOJO next week. Might ask for your help!
Tell me about Periscope??
A5 it depends on how accessible the tech is at home. tech is becoming more prominent tho!
So cool to hear about students being the YouTube creators!
Q5: Parents tell me they have vocabulary to have deeper connections and conversations, even links with Grandparents :D
Absolutely - nothing replaces that great read aloud time between teachers and students!
I use Dojo a lot to keep Ps updated on class activities, I do struggle to keep up with daily points.
Oh You NEED periscope! Wonderful PD-iteachTVnetwork
With student input into 3D printers - the product, and the student process, is combined!
We move from table to table. Device stays on desk.
Finding that photocopier is ALWAYS an issue, whether it's last minute or not!
maybe using as an option?
Kind of took this from Kami, but I am in the process of signing up Ps to watch our class during the school day
Q6: Classrooms can have a social aspect that is very important to development. Does tech hinder or help social interactions?
Gotta run tonight! Basketball game calls! See ya next week!
Agreed! We embed the YouTube video so they are not hopping into any other videos.
This idea is growing on me. Would prob need admin approval though
what program are you going to use? I would really like to try this!
Nothing like addressing misconceptions as they naturally occur!
Bye Kami! Glad you could join us for tonight.
A6: Tech and have + and - on social. + empowering in creation and peer support, downside - isolation so "hooked"
Have you found a way to use SnapChat educationally to meet them where they are at?
A6: Apps like edmodo, SeeSaw allows you to establish good communication habits, importance of esafety in schools and having
A6: HELP!! Ss who would rarely speak up in person have a safe forum for their voice, & Ss collaborate in deeper ways
A6: it does a little of both... talking 2 someone via text doesnt allow 4 feelings 2 b expressed https://t.co/9oGXhUZS2T
A5: see lots potential in lower grades. Haven't done in HS.
A6: confident users of social media.
It's similar to trying to "catch students up" on the basics of other content areas
To "embed" a video you need your host to support that - our school webpage does (visit: https://t.co/VYF9RsTVLX for example )
It can't be accomplished all at once but is necessary to their success in the future!
Aww, that's so nice to hear Katie!
Keeping parents in the game is crucial in that they are learning PARTNERS!
But, there still has2be healthy balance so parents aren't freaking out when students are struggling/learning/growing
I use the "embed" feature within YouTube vs. the "share link" then embed it into "embed friendly" apps
This was an area we were weak on in our AdvancEd eval. Tech could change that.
A6 depends on facilitation, I like when the kids are excited to help one another w tech & encourage socialization thru that
How do you help maintain that healthy balance?
thank you for sharing this! yay!
I agree! My final compromise was 10 minutes of a quick math assessment in - and then running around
Love that "assistant coach" mentality - plus the picture "coaching" creates - we're all growing!
So sad to have missed most of the convo today! Got caught in after school stuff...looking forward to reading later!
Cool Cathy, we'll look into it :)
But this is crucial! Then, we just have to marry their terms to the tech terms to prepare them
Any backlash from parents if a student had a bad day and it was broadcast?
