The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will host a series of Twitter chats focused on the National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries to help facilitate conversations for school librarians and educators everywhere as they unpack and implement the new AASL Standards in their local communities. Those wishing to participate can follow the hashtag #AASLstandards.
Our moderators will tweet one question at a time using a Q1/A1 format. Feel free to share links and media in your answers. Tonight’s questions will focus on district professional development and self-relfection. #AASLstandards

Judi @CactusWoman from Tucson, AZ - participating from Menlo Park, CA, on the soon-to-be-a-grandmother road trip. Good afternoon/evening, All. Very interested in hearing your #AASLStandards thoughts/implementation/plans/strategies.
Hi, I am the District Digital Media Specialist serving over 20,000 students on 35 campuses in Hillsboro, Oregon @hillsboro_sd
I am excited to learn how others are starting to implement the #AASLStandards in their districts and campuses!
A1: The #AASLStandards Shared foundation that most resonates in my community is II. Include. Equity & inclusiveness are foundational principles in the work we do, and our campus media centers, digital library program, instruction, & PD sessions all strive to be inclusive!
A1 Rather than reflecting what we do or a current focus of our program, the standards have given us a tool for advocacy for insertion of library media collaboration across curricula and disciplines #AASLstandards
A1 Strictly from an instructional standpoint, we fit with many of them as we have a strong inquiry focus K-12 with collaborative opportunities in ELA and social studies. #AASLstandards
Tonight's the Night! Join your peers in an upcoming #AASLstandards Twitter chat on Wednesday, February 7, 7:00 p.m. EST, w/ a focus toward self-reflection, growth mindset, instructional shifts, professional development, and evaluating success! @piw13@emcnair1@nomoretwist
I’m a middle school librarian near Buffalo, NY. I do spend some time in my district’s 4 elementary schools as well. #AASLstandards Im so happy to be participating tonight!
I see us moving toward that direction with many of us further along in that journey. Fits in so well with other curricular standards and education initiatives. #AASLstandards
A2. The new standards are much better aligned to the Danielson Framework for those districts working with her Framework. Our district was thrilled to see the connections. It's going to make the transition easier for us. #AASLstandards
A1: I am most drawn to the “explore” column. I consider my library to be the place where curiosity and wonder can be nurtured. I think student choice is so important so nurturing that exploration is so important to me! #AASLstandards
A2: I don't think the #AASLStandards require much of a shift in our practice. They do provide areas of focus and new lenses through which to view our practice, looking for areas of growth. I also like the tools the frameworks, assessment, and evaluation pieces provide.
A2 The standards are a clear way to help colleagues understand how their content meets inquiry and digital skills. We might not change, but the understanding of digital age learning will improve #AASLstandards
A2. #aaslstandards I think it depends on schools, state, district. These standards (or the thought behind them) have been ideals for awhile. However, I think these are easier to communicate and may push conversations about resources/access forward....
A2: Agree that there will not be huge shift; however, there is an opportunity to connect with curriculum, Ts, administrators as well as other standards .#AASLStandards
A2: I’m a new librarian so no, it isn’t a shift for me. It’s how I was taught! I am new to my district and this is a shift in how the libraries are viewed. For me, the standards really are an advocacy tool to support the type of program I want for my students. #AASLstandards
A3 Love the checklist that is included in the Standards book- a great help in keeping us on track. I have already introduced it to my district colleagues. #AASLstandards

A3: Depends on the audience for the #AASLStandards PD - if it's librarians, we should see elements of foundations in planning, instruction, & assessment. For teachers and admins, we should see libraries, librarians, collections, and services used at a much higher & deeper level.
A3 We will know PD is successful when librarians are able to articulate how the standards relate to their professional practice--for themselves and their stakeholders. #AASLstandards
A3: I think the more everyone shares, the more it seems to raise the bar - everyone is inspired and it provides great evidence for others to build on. #AASLStandards.
Being able to articulate how the standards relate to their practice is a great way to demo understanding. Their personal alignment... @livluvlibrary#AASLstandards

A3: Sharing the student products and learning outcomes when media specialist collaborates with classroom teacher and describing it with the foundations and competencies is good informal PD for all #AASLstandards
@aasl The new standards will be so much more applicable when creating programming/lessons for students with special education needs! I was very excited at how easily I was able to incorporate them into next week's lesson for a self-contained elementary class!

A4: My ultimate implementation vision would be a school-wide research rubric for Ts to integrate as necessary & badges for Ss to show proficiency & mastery #AASLstandards
A3: Don't expect one session is enough to cover it all. We were going to try to do full implementation by the next school year but we decided to give ourselves some time to paint a picture of what it looks like - not just on the surface. #aaslstandards
A4 Thinking about focusing on each shared foundation for a month with #hcpsslms throughout next school year #AASLstandards Encourage each person to share something from their practice related to each standard each month
What is the solution @mrterborg ? I think it is 2 highlight bright spots in district or neighboring districts w/full-time #schoollibrarians & change hiring/staffing practices based on positive outcomes 4 admins/Ts/Ss. #AASLStandards
A4: In addition to featuring the #AASLStandards on the website and in materials I create for our District, they will feature heavily in upcoming budget requests, requests for pilot programs, conversations around media center renovations, and basically every chance I get.
A4- To start, district-wide workshops to see how the standards fit into daily practice AND how they align to our state standards in ELA and social studies. @NSLAorg is also hosting similar workshops across the state on Febr 24. #AASLstandards
A4: One possibility is 2 focus a PD sessions on each
#AASLStandards Shared Foundation - led by a small group of #schoollibrarians
who have expertise/keen interest in that topic. #aasl_spvs#lilead
Oh - great idea! I do a weekly newsletter - maybe dedicating a section once per month to a standard, shared foundation, or something? Love it! #AASLstandards
A3: in an ideal world, anytime there is a question about inquiry, media literacy, digital citizenship, tech integration and other #futureready skills, everyone’s first thought is to ask their librarian! #AASLstandards
Agreed. Not sure I have the solution as it's a difficult one. Shouldn't be. But priorities? Or is it lack of understanding about what we do? #aaslstandards
A4: I'm planning to purchase the #aaslstandards for #sisdlibraries to put in their collections and study during our PDs for the rest of this year and most of next.

And wouldn't it be great if I could also lead some workshops with our content curriculum leaders around them? Get them to see the connections so they can encourage their teachers to collaborate with #schoollibrarian#AASLStandards
IMHO - If there is a lack of understanding, whose "fault" it is? I believe everyone is from Missouri & must be shown what an effective #schoollibrarian can do 2 increase Ss learning & improve Ts teaching. #AASLStandards = opportunity

A5 I have a district Twitter account and highlight what I see in schools, encourage each school to have have social media presence, hashtag for our program #hcpsslms#AASLstandards
Yes! I love it - my primary audience for the newsletters is teachers - here is the archive, in case you're curious: https://t.co/0R7jbkwUU5#AASLstandards
A5: Librarians might share their great work in their district through admin newsletters (We have weekly ones for all staff) or present at staff meetings. #aaslstandards
A5 We encourage our school librarians to share what they are doing with their administrators and parents. We also try and highlight their great goings on through social media, our weekly newsletter, and in meetings with our district level curriculum supervisors. #AASLstandards
Agreed! Major shifts happening in our high school social studies curriculum - it is essential that the curricular revision team incorporate new #AASLstandards into their planning!
Lack of understanding seems to indicate a communication problem. If so, it's both parties "fault". That said, I think we need to work harder/smarter/different. Yes, the standards can help! #aaslstandards
A5 I think you have to be attuned to what your staff/district/ community “notices” and responds to. Are they Twitter user, Facebook aficionados,do they read the School eBlast, etc. ? #AASLstandards
A5: I send out quarterly faculty and family newsletters, I have parent and teacher pages on my website. I could do a better job of focusing less on materials and more on the learning that happens in the library. #AASLstandards
A6: I tried to follow everyone participating in the #aaslstandards chat, and I am still working to "find my tribe" of teachers, principals, parents, etc. who believe in the power of school libraries. Since I am the only licensed TL in my district, it is a big job!

Q6: I am on state committee looking at aligning our state SL21 benchmarks for quality libraries. We r going through process of detailed questions about what needs to change for alignment. #AASLStandards
How can I both learn and implement standards and share with my colleagues effectively? Starting to think one step at a time; shared foundation by shared foundation across all three rubrics. #aaslstandards
A6 We are just starting the process. The district standards workshops are a way for our 100+ librarians to connect with each other. We plan to build the conversation from there. #AASLstandards
By being included on the teams of teachers who are researching and writing new curriculum. All curricular work must include the library media lens, support, and contributions! #AASLstandards
A6 Our district purchased copies of the Standards Framework for Learners and that has given me and my colleagues a great springboard for discussion at our dept. mtgs. The one-pagers on the Standards site have helped to open up com unication with staff and admin.. #AASLstandards
A6: Our state library assoc is planning meetings, in person & virtual, in various parts of the state so that all will get a good understanding of the #AASLstandards - great way to connect! #ctcaslchat@ctcasl
Why is it that so many districts across our nation has to do the same work to rewrite curriculum? With the critical shortage of education funding it seems that we should be able to find a solution to this. Let's face it, it's going to look similar when we're done. #AASLstandards
A7 More and more librarians are considering Collaboration a priority - every day I hear stories about how impactful their Learners conversations are. Very exciting! #AASLstandards
A7: Though not in a district – hoping 4 > > buzz about
classroom-library #coteaching 2 implement #AASLStandards aligned w/Ts required curriculum standards & Admins priorities. Go team! #aasl_spvs#lilead
A7: I am excited that I am now so busy teaching in classrooms across our district that they will need to hire a second librarian just to keep up! #aaslstandards All of this collaboration is starting to pay off as our teachers realize what a licensed TL can do for them & Students!

We have a fabulous group of librarians in our district who are interested in what is best for Ss. Always willing to share, collaborate, learn and grow #AASLStandards@PCCSlibraries

It is important for administrators to understand how their school librarian can help achieve learning goals #AASLStandards Thank you @aasl for reaching out to do session at Principal’s Conference.
